ANKARA: Map distributed to Istanbul schools redraws Turkey borders

Map distributed to Istanbul schools redraws borders of Turkey
Abbas Güçlü

ISTANBUL – Milliyet
Wednesday, September 30, 2009

A CD prepared by Istanbul’s provincial education directorate has
redrawn the map of Turkey to include parts of northern Iraq.

The mistake shocked even the directorate itself and placed education
officials in an awkward situation as it comes just after Education
Ministry school books got the dates of some national days wrong.

The ministry on Wednesday ordered that the CDs be taken back from
schools and parents who had received them, it was reported.

A CD was distributed to schools as part of the parent education
project and on it the map of Turkey included the cities of Mosul and
Kirkuk in northern Iraq as being within Turkey’s borders. It also
shows the island of Cyprus and Armenia as part of Turkey. Parts of
Georgia and Bulgaria have also been depicted as within Turkey’s
borders.

The project was prepared during the tenure of former Istanbul
education director, Ata Ã-zer, and the discrepancies have shocked
current director Muammer Yıldız.

The map mistake compounds the embarrassment from schoolbooks prepared
by the Education Ministry and distributed free of charge to students
also have some very glaring errors. The occasion of Victory Day on
Aug. 30 is omitted and an incorrect date is cited for Children and
National Sovereignty Day, celebrated on April 23. The day has been
marked as April 29 in the books.

`Such a map is unacceptable. It is a big mistake that can create
unnecessary debate. I am very sad,’ said Yıldız, who initiated an
inquiry into the matter.

Yıldız said the information was compiled from various sources but
that no one noticed the discrepancies until after it was sent to all
Istanbul schools was even more shocking.

`It can’t be used as an excuse that the map escaped the attention of
our people working on the project. I wish it hadn’t happened. But
someone from among us should have spotted it and warned us,’ said
Yıldız.

Istanbul was chosen as the pilot province to rate the effectiveness of
the project. The aim is to educate parents on various issues, ranging
from first aid to how to deal with children, prior to the start of the
school term. It was carried out during the week before schools started
alongside the `getting used to school’ program for children about to
begin their education. Around 230,000 children began their first year
of primary school in the province of Istanbul this year.

The objective was to have an orientation week for all of these
children and their parents.

Armenians Protest Protocols

ARMENIANS PROTEST PROTOCOLS

AZG DAILY
29-09-2009
Armenia-Turkey

Thousands rally in the Pelanconi Park area against parts of proposed
deal with Turkey.

Chanting and signs filled Pelanconi Park and its surrounding streets
Sunday as thousands of people gathered to rally against the protocols
for new talks between Armenia and Turkey.

The talks are a part of a "road map" agreed upon last spring for
normalizing diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia and
opening the border between them. The proposed deal still must receive
Parliamentary approval from both countries.

The two countries have long clashed over the mass killings of
Armenians in 1915 at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey refuses
to categorize the deaths as genocide and has strongly fought against
any formal recognition of the massacres.

The event was organized by the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party, the
Armenian Revolutionary Federation, the Armenian Democratic Liberal
Party and the Unified Young Armenians. Leaders from the organizations
met following the announcement of the protocols and joined together
in opposing them.

On Sunday, thousands of people came from all over California as well
as neighboring states. Thirty-seven buses brought people from across
the Los Angeles area, while many others were forced to park blocks
away. They streamed onto Grandview Avenue, which was blocked off from
traffic with a police blockade.

Those in attendance expressed anger about the protocols, which would
which they said were not fair to Armenia.

"Don’t give in to Turkey," they chanted in Armenian. "Stand up and
fight until the end."

Arek Santikian, chairman of the Armenian Youth Federation’s western
region, said the event’s organizers expected more than 10,000 people
to attend what he emphasized was a rally for people to voice their
opinions that Armenia should not agree to the protocols.

"It’s all of the Armenian community rallying together," he said.

The most controversial facet of the p istorical commission to question
the validity of the Armenian Genocide.

"That would make what has become a political issue into a historical
issue," Santikian said.

Glendale High School senior Salpi Topjian and Hoover High School
senior Annabelle Mehrabian said they came out to the event because
the Armenian Genocide is something that must not be forgotten.

Still, they said they were shocked by the number of people in
attendance.

"They really want to show their support for Armenia," Mehrabian said,
GlendaleNewsPress reported.

Baku: Issue Of Signing ‘Road Map’ With Turkey To Be Raised In Azerba

ISSUE OF SIGNING ‘ROAD MAP’ WITH TURKEY TO BE RAISED IN AZERBAIJANI PARLIAMENT

Today.Az
28 September 2009

A member of the Azerbaijani Parliament will raise issue of signing a
"road map" with Turkey.

"There is a need to sign a "road map" between Turkey and
Azerbaijan. This paper should be signed before the document which is
expected to be signed between Turkey and Armenia. This paper should
be a legal framework to prevent the Turkish authorities from taking
step beyond this framework," Parliamentarian and Deputy Chairman of
the pro-government Ana Vatan Party Zahid Oruj said.

Erdogan said in his exclusive interview with Trend News that Turkey
and Armenia will sign a deal to establish diplomatic ties on Oct. 10.

He said the deal will be signed by the countries’ foreign ministers,
but it must be approved by the countries’ parliaments before taking
effect.

The parliamentarian said the "road map" might be Turkey’s moral
responsibility.

"We are brothers and all political slogans have great importance. But
we need the legal "road map". I will raise this issue at the
Azerbaijani Parliament," Oruj said.
