Opinion: Armenian genocide could be repeating itself

One hundred and eight years ago, the world witnessed one of the most shameful examples of inhumanity ever seen.

In the shadow of World War I, the Ottoman government embarked on a program to eliminate an entire ancient culture and population. In full view of the entire world, more than 1.5 million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire perished through starvation, forced deportation and outright murder. The circumstances of the killings involved horrific and repeated instances of bestiality and depravity. Men women and children were stripped of their property, their dignity and ultimately their lives. Theodore Roosevelt referred to the atrocities as “the greatest crime of the war.” The brutalities were witnessed and reported by high ranking U.S. officials.

The world watched but did not intervene as the genocide, a word which did not yet exist, unfolded. Years later, in 1944, a young scholar named Raphael Lemkin coined the word and cited the Armenian atrocities as a primary example.

Sports: Yerevan, Day 7: Armenia starts its move towards top at European Championships

Weightlifters from host nation Armenia were roared on to the podium by a big crowd at the European Championships here in Yerevan.

Davit Hovhannisyan and Ara Aghanyan, first and second last year in Albania, repeated the feat in front of their own fans, helped by a slew of red lights for rivals from France and Italy.

The 96kg result takes the host nation up to second place behind Romania in the medals table and with several more chances over the weekend they look certainties to finish top.

Another certainty is a packed house at the Karen Demirchyan Complex on Saturday and Sunday.

More than 4,000 tickets have been sold for the final men’s super-heavyweight session of the Championships, which features multiple champion and world record holder Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia and the young Armenian challenger Varazdat Lalayan.

Hovhannisyan led his team-mate by 7kg in the snatch and stretched the advantage to 13kg, finishing on 172-205-377, with Aghanyan on 165-199-364.

Between them they declined three attempts, having seen off all challengers.

Cristiano Ficco from Italy made only two good lifts for third place on 165-198-363, ahead of the snatch silver medallist from Turkey, Hakan Kurnaz in fourth on 361kg and Britain’s Cyrille Tchatchet in fifth on 350kg.

Both French athletes, Redon Manushi and Romain Imadouchene – fourth at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships last December – bombed out in the snatch.

In the other medal event of the day, the women’s 81kg, Iryna Dekha from Ukraine won a sweep of gold medals to claim her fourth continental title.

For the third session in a row the winner finished way clear: for Karlos Nasar and Marie Fegue yesterday the margin was 21kg and 27kg, and for 26-year-old Dekha it was 23kg after she made 123-135-258.

Dekha has always thrived in the snatch by comparison with clean and jerk, having bombed out twice with three failures in the latter part of a competition – including at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Here she made her first clean and jerk but missed the last two, which is exactly what happened in December at the first Paris 2024 qualifier, the IWF World Championships,  where Dekha won snatch gold then dropped to fourth place.

Turkey won four more medals and it has 21, more than any other nation after seven days.

Dilara Narin finished second on 101-134-235 and Sara Yenigun on 131kg.

Elina Erighina of Moldova was third on total with104-130-234.

YEREVAN, APRIL 20, ARMENPRESS. United States Congresswoman Katie Porter has said that Azerbaijan’s goal in blocking the Lachin Corridor is to force the ethnic Armenians of Artsakh from their homeland by imposing conditions that make life impossible.

She made the remarks at the Congressional Armenian Genocide Observance – 2023.

“Our response must also be clear. We must hold Azerbaijan accountable for its aggression and I will keep calling, and if needed pushing, the Biden administration to be proactive in taking steps to end the blockade. American taxpayers should not be subsidizing Azerbaijan's hostility against the Armenian people, as long as the aggression continues Azerbaijan should not receive any military assistance,” she added.

The Lachin Corridor has been blocked by Azerbaijan since December 2022.

Azerbaijan has been ignoring an order by the ICJ to reopen the road.

The blockade has caused a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh).

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS. A member of the U.S. Massachusetts Air National Guard was arrested by the FBI on Thursday in connection with the leaking of classified documents that have been posted online, CNN reported citing U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The arrest of Jack Teixeira, 21, comes following a fast-moving search by the U.S. government for the identity of the leaker who posted classified documents to a social media platform popular with video gamers called Discord.

Teixeira was arrested in Massachusetts without incident, Garland said, and will be arraigned in federal court there. “This investigation is ongoing. We will share more information at the appropriate time,” the attorney general said, declining to answer questions.

The leaked documents posted to social media, some of which have been obtained by CNN, included detailed U.S. intelligence assessments of allies and adversaries alike, including on the state of the war in Ukraine and the challenges Kyiv and Moscow face as the war appears stuck in a stalemate.

Multiple US officials told CNN that Teixeira is believed to be the leader of the group where a trove of classified documents had been posted.

The Air Force released service details for Teixeira, an Airman 1st Class.

Teixeira is an enlisted airman at the Massachusetts Air National Guard, according to details from his service record released by the Air Force Thursday. He joined the service in September 2019 and his official job is Cyber Transport Systems journeyman. According to the Air Force, Cyber Transport Systems specialists are tasked with making sure the service’s “vast, global communications network” is “operating properly.”

Senior MP warns Azerbaijan of counterblow in the event of encroachment

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS. A senior lawmaker on April 14 praised the Armenian military for successfully repelling the Azerbaijani attack on April 11 near Tegh village and added that an internal investigation will be conducted into possible shortcomings in their actions, as noted by PM Pashinyan during the latest Cabinet meeting.

“The Prime Minister’s instructions can’t go unfilled. But shortcomings could happen. And we will be consistent in revealing them and bringing those guilty to account,” MP Andranik Kocharyan, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security Affairs said at a press briefing.

PM Nikol Pashinyan had said that they had predicted a potential Azeri provocation and relevant orders were issued to officials in charge in the event of such scenario. Pashinyan said, however, that the implementation of these orders was a failure.

Kocharyan said that yesterday’s closed meeting in parliament with the top brass sought to rule out such situations in the future.

“The Armenian Armed Forces gave a counterblow, and if our military didn’t act the way it did the Azerbaijani forces would’ve penetrated far deeper,” Kocharyan said, highlighting that the military’s capabilities must be on a level allowing it to fulfill its objectives. “What’s ours is ours, if the adversary is to make a further encroachment it should know that it will get a response. And here, the existence or non-existence of government instructions don’t matter, because the military must fulfill its objectives without instructions as well,” Kocharyan said.

He said an internal investigation will take place in the National Security Service, and if needed also in the military.

“The situation became clearer after yesterday’s discussion, the military fulfilled its objectives, we suffered casualties, but we stopped the adversary’s provocations,” he added.

Yerevan: Anti-Armenian hate speech continues at highest level in Azerbaijan

PanARMENIAN.Net - In Azerbaijan, hate speech towards the Armenians continues at the highest level, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the 31st anniversary of the massacre of Armenians in Maragha on April 10.

The statement reads:

31 years ago, on April 10, 1992, the Azerbaijani armed forces carried out a preplanned brutal massacre of the peaceful population of the Armenian settlement of Maragha in Martakert region of Nagorno-Karabakh, as a result of which the settlement with a population of about 5,000 was completely subjected to ethnic cleansing, more than 50 civilians were brutally killed and as many were taken captive. This data has been documented in the reports of the human rights organisations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. The fates of many hostages have not been clarified to this day, and they are considered to have been forcibly disappeared.

The Maragha massacre was a continuation of the organised pogroms of Armenians in Sumgait, Kirovabad and Baku and one of the manifestations of mass crimes committed by the Azerbaijani authorities on the grounds of national identity. The preplanned crimes against the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, war crimes, their impunity and glorification became part of Azerbaijan's systemic policy and took on new manifestations during Azerbaijan's aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh in April 2016 and on a larger scale during the 44-day war of 2020 as a result of which tens of thousands of Armenians were displaced also from Hadrut, Shushi and surrounding regions.

It is no coincidence that not only the Armenians displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh during 1988-1991 have never had the opportunity to return to their homes and exercise their rights, including managing their private property, but also nowadays, Azerbaijan violates the provisions of the Trilateral Statement of November 9, 2020, disrupting the return of displaced persons and refugees to Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions, which should be carried out under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Moreover, violating the norms of international law and the international obligations, nowadays the official Baku is populating with Azerbaijanis the Armenian settlements fallen under its control, the homes of Armenians, for example in the Armenian village of Talish.

It is also noteworthy that, grossly violating the decisions of authoritative international courts, Azerbaijan openly continues to desecrate, vandalise and destroy the Armenian religious, historical and cultural monuments and sanctuaries, having the aim to completely erase the Armenian trace from the territories that are under its control. At the same time, the hate speech towards the Armenians continues at the highest level. These actions have already been repeatedly condemned by international institutions.

31 years after the Maragha massacre, already for around four months Azerbaijan has been illegally blocking the Lachin corridor connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with the rest of the world. The deliberate creation of a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, the periodic violations of the ceasefire and the aggressive actions of the Azerbaijani armed forces in Nagorno-Karabakh, the consistent targeting and terrorising of the peaceful population prove once again that Azerbaijan's goal is to subject Nagorno-Karabakh to ethnic cleansing.

Today we pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Maragha massacre. In order to further prevent such crimes, we once again emphasise the urgency of taking the active steps by the international community, including by using the available international mechanisms.

The Republic of Armenia reaffirms its commitment to the establishment of lasting and comprehensive peace and security in the region, which is possible by Azerbaijan's refusal of the maximalist and aggressive policy and by the search for fair solutions to the existing problems.

Russia doesn’t whatsoever abandon obligations towards Armenia, says Ambassador

YEREVAN, APRIL 8, ARMENPRESS. Security cooperation between Armenia and Russia remains one of the key areas of partnership between the two countries, the Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin has said.

In an interview with Armeniatoday, the Ambassador said that Russia doesn’t whatsoever abandon its obligations towards Armenia enshrined in treaties.

“The 102nd military base continues to function, the number of our border guards has increased, there are observation posts in parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Of course, our peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno Karabakh is an important factor for ensuring regional security.  Regrettably, criticism is being voiced towards the contingent from time to time, however this doesn’t cancel the fact that this is a key factor for ensuring security and the way of life of the Armenian population in Nagorno Karabakh. Even now, when the [Lachin] corridor is closed, the peacekeepers play a highly important role in preventing a humanitarian crisis and supporting the delivery of essential products and food. One can make some demands against Russia or the peacekeeping contingent, but in my opinion the fact that the Russian presence has been a very important factor for security and preventing an escalation doesn’t require proof,” the Russian ambassador said.
