Azerbaijan sets up special commission to destroy Armenian cultural heritage

Armenia – Feb 4 2022

A special commission has been set up in Azerbaijan to destroy Armenian cultural heritage.

The minister of culture of Azerbaijan, Anar Karimov, told local media that this commission comprises specialists who know the history, culture, and writing of Albania.

"Armenians have left traces on our monuments. Now we are gathering evidence in this regard," Karimov said, continuing the Azerbaijani authorities’ policy of "Albanian" affiliation of Armenian churches in.

"Work is being done in this regard with international experts in the field of Albanian Studies, it is planned to invite them to Azerbaijan. As you know, we cannot go to those areas for security reasons. In the next phases, we will go—with local and international experts—to the areas where the Armenianized Albanian monuments are located, all the facts will be documented and presented to the international community," the aforesaid Azerbaijani minister said.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijani authorities categorically refuse to allow UNESCO representatives to enter Armenian territories under their control. The reasons are obvious: the Azerbaijani side needs time to falsify the "evidence."

MASSACHUSETTS MANDATES PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO COVER ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Tampa Dispatch
Jan 25 2022

Massachusetts will require its public schools to cover the Armenian Genocide of the early 20th century following a decision by state legislators. This makes Massachusetts the sixth state in the United States to mandate education on the genocide, during which the Ottoman Empire killed or displaced around 2 million Armenian Christians.

Despite much advocacy from Armenian groups regarding the addition of the Armenian Genocide to Massachusetts’ curriculum, some Turkish groups fought against the new mandate. The Turkish government continues to undertake a campaign of denial surrounding the genocide, and has been known to spread disinformation surrounding the atrocity.

Last year, President Joe Biden became only the second United States president to affirm the existence of the genocide, greatly angering his Turkish counterparts and adding to the already tense U.S.-Turkey alliance.

Although the Armenian Genocide occurred more than a century ago, education about the atrocity is still vital to continue. In the 2020 Karabakh War, Turkish-paid mercenaries and Azerbaijani soldiers committed several war crimes against the Armenian Christian population of Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenian: Artsakh) in manners reminiscent of the genocide.

In order to preserve the memory of the rich Christian heritage of Armenia, the first Christian nation in the world, and prevent such future atrocities from happening, institutions must continue to educate future generations on the devastation of the Armenian genocide.

MP: Hayastan faction submitted two applications to Constitutional Court

Armenia – Jan 25 2022

The opposition Hayastan faction submitted two applications to the Constitutional Court of Armenia in the recent past, MP Aram Vardevanyan said on Facebook on Tuesday.

“The first complaint concerns Article 135 of the Criminal Procedure Code – arrests, the wording of reasonable suspicion, the evidence threshold and its interpretation by the Supreme Judicial Council. The same application also challenges the inadmissibility of revoking the grounds for arrest,” he wrote.

The second application disputes the paragraph of the law "On Procurement", according to which the protocol expenses of the president, parliament speaker and prime minister are considered a state secret.

"The mentioned regulation and its application have proved that those officials remain outside public control, which is unacceptable in a democratic society," the MP stressed.

Vardevanyan also spoke about several legislative initiatives, including a bill calling for the elimination of penalty points for drivers, stressing the introduction of the system has not had a positive impact on road safety.

In addition, the Hayastan faction is working on another bill on the disproportionality of the minimum wage and the financial burden of PCR tests. Vardevanyan promised to provide further details in the near future.

Youth wing of Australia’s Liberal Party recognising the Republic of Artsakh and the Armenian, Assyrian, Greek Genocides

Public Radio of Armenia
Jan 24 2022

The Young Liberal Movement of Australia has unanimously adopted a motion at its National Convention recognising the 1915 Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides, as well as acknowledging the rights to self-determination of the indigenous Armenian people of the Republic of Artsakh, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).

The Young Liberal Movement is the youth wing of the Liberal Party of Australia, which is one of two major political parties in Australian politics and currently the party in Government federally, led by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

The adoption of the motion demonstrates the growing discourse in Australian society supporting national recognition of the 1915 Genocides, which contrasts with the policy of the Morrison Government, who have continued to placate the denialist Turkish Government with the use of euphemisms instead of the word “genocide” when referring to the Ottoman massacres against the Empire’s Christian minorities.

Significantly, the motion also ensures the Young Liberals support the rights to self-determination of the Republic of Artsakh, which is currently under occupation by Azerbaijan following their attacks on the independent Armenian-populated state in 2020 during the Nagorno Karabakh War.

The 2022 Young Liberal Federal Convention was held from January 21 – 23, 2022 at the Hobart Convention and Exhibition Centre at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, with 44 voting delegates participating from six states and the Australian Capital Territory.

The motion was moved by ACT Young Liberal President Connor Andreatidis and seconded by one of his colleagues from the ACT Young Liberal delegation.

Andreatidis’ motion not only recognised the 1915 crimes committed by the Ottoman Empire, but also called on the “Federal Government to recognise and condemn the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides”.

His motion also linked the Armenian Genocide to contemporary acts of aggression, notably Azerbaijani hostilities against the Armenian nation witnessed in September 2020 and the pan-Turkic attempts to ethnically cleanse the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) region of Armenians.

Andreatidis’ motion called on the Federal Young Liberals to “recognise the right to self-determination of the Armenians of the Republic of Artsakh, and that the recent and ongoing attacks against the Republic of Artsakh by Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, are part of an ongoing legacy of Genocide and genocide denial”.

Prominent members of the Australian Liberal Party were also present at the Federal Convention and witnessed the unprecedented motion, including longtime friend and ally of the Armenian-Australian community Senator Eric Abetz, fellow Tasmanian Senators Claire Chandler and Senator Jonathon Duniam, and Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein.

ANC-AU Executive Director Haig Kayserian welcomed the support of the Australian Young Liberal Movement and thanked them for adopting the motion.

“This motion saw future leaders of our nation call out their current leaders by taking a unanimous stand in solidarity with the Armenian-Australian, Assyrian-Australian and Greek-Australian communities by addressing past and current injustices that remain unpunished,” Kayserian said.

“Thanks to the leadership of Mr Connor Andreatidis, some of the most politically active youth from around the country and members of our Prime Minister’s own party have sent a collective, clear and unequivocal message that we must face our future challenges by recognising and condemning past injustices wherever they may take place,” Kayserian added.

“We thank Mr Andreatidis and past and present Young Liberal members who have supported this and similar motions which continue to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to advancing issues important to our communities.”

In August 2020, the ACT Young Liberals passed a similar resolution recognised and condemning the 1915 Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides and the right to self-determination of the Republic of Artsakh (see here).

YEREVAN, JANUARY 21, ARMENPRESS. The specialists of the new nuclear power plant in Armenia will be trained in Russia, the Director-General of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (Metsamor) Eduard Martirosyan told TASS news agency.

“In Russia,” he said when asked where the future staff of the new plant will be trained.

The lifecycle of the current Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant was extended to 2026, and it will further be extended for another 10 years.

Meanwhile, the construction of the new nuclear power plant will take somewhere between 10 or 12 years, Martirosyan said.

Martirosyan said that the specialists of the current nuclear power plant have also studied in Russia.

Additionally, Martirosyan said they’ve considered the option of constructing small plants. He said there is a probability of building such a plant for the Geopromining Armenia company in Syunik Province.

In September 2021, Geopromining donated 25% of its shares in the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine to the Armenian government.

The new nuclear power plant must have at least the same capacity as the active one – 500-600 MW.

At the same time, he didn’t rule out the possibility of building a more powerful plant – 2 power units with 1200 MW capacity. This will depend on the level of energy consumption of that time, and the possibility of expanding energy supplies to neighboring countries.

On the sidelines of Expo 2020 in Dubai, ROSATOM and the management of the Armenian nuclear power plant signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the development of the project.
