The snap election has been called to end the political crisis that started after Armenian forces lost war against Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh

Opinion polls have put Armenia's acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and former President Robert Kocharyan neck-and-neck ahead of parliamentary election on Sunday. The snap election has been called to end the political crisis that started after Armenian forces lost war against Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Pashinyan has been under pressure ever since, with regular street protests demanding he step down over the terms of the peace agreement that ended the conflict. Under the deal, which was brokered by Russia, Azerbaijan regained control of territory it had lost during a war in the early 1990s.

Pashinyan himself called the agreement a disaster, but said he had been compelled to sign it in order to prevent greater human and territorial losses.

According to a recent Gallup International poll conducted on June 7-10, 24.1% of voters are ready to vote for Kocharyan's Armenia Alliance and 23.8% for Pashinyan's Civil Contract party.

Whoever forms majority in parliament gets to elect the prime minister. The PM is nominated by the president.

Armenia, which hosts a Russian military base, is a close ally of Moscow, though Pashinyan, who came to power on the back of street protests and on an anti-corruption agenda in 2018, has had cooler relations with the Kremlin.

"We wish a successful election to our close ally and partner," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Turkey, which supported Azerbaijan in last year's conflict, will also be watching closely.

Pashinyan's main rival is Kocharyan, a native of Nagorno-Karabakh, the region that was fought over last year. It is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has long been claimed by ethnic Armenians too.

He was president of Armenia from 1998 to 2008 and was accused of acting unlawfully when he introduced a state of emergency in March 2008 following a disputed election. At least 10 people were killed in the clashes that followed between the police and protesters.

In a recent interview with Russia's RT TV channel, Kocharyan accused the then Armenian leadership of inaction during last year's war and pledged to start negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh's borders if he came to power.

"Armenia" bloc member: If Pashinyan stays in power, Armenian flag will be replaced with Turkish or Azeri flag

News.am, Armenia

Have you noticed how the Armenian national flag is portrayed on their posters? Vahe Hakobyan — representative of “Armenia” bloc which is running in the snap parliamentary elections set to be held on June 20, leader of Reviving Armenia Party and former Governor of Syunik Province — asked this question during a campaign meeting with residents of Avshar village today.

“The Armenian national flag is scratched on the poster. If the incumbent authorities stay in power a little longer, the national flags of Turkey and Azerbaijan will replace the Armenian one. Today is Flag Day in Armenia, and today he [Nikol Pashinyan] is going to Syunik Province along with over 1,500 police officers armed with special equipment. Whom is he going to use the special equipment against? I hoped the troops would move towards Sev Lake, but no, he is moving around Syunik Province with an army. If we Armenians want to live in our homeland and if our destiny is linked to the homeland, there is no alternative,” Hakobyan said.

15 Armenian POWs Freed By Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan -- Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov meets with acting US
Assistant Secretary of State Philip Reeker, Baku, June 9, 2021

In a deal brokered by the United States and Georgia, Azerbaijan set free 15
Armenian prisoners of war on Saturday after receiving more information from
Armenia about minefields around Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian announced their release as he campaigned
for snap parliamentary elections slated for June 20.

Pashinian’s press secretary, Mane Gevorgian, said that the POWs were repatriated
to Armenia via Georgia.

“The process took place with U.S. and Georgian mediation, for which the
government of Armenia thanks the U.S. administration and the Georgian
government,” Gevorgian wrote on Facebook.

Azerbaijan said it freed the POWs in exchange for an Armenian military map
detailing the location of nearly 100,000 land mines in the Aghdam district east
of Nagorno-Karabakh which was handed back to Baku under the terms of a
Russian-brokered agreement that stopped last year’s Armenian-Azerbaijani war.

“The 15 Armenian captives were turned over on the Azerbaijani-Georgian border
with the participation of Georgian representatives,” the Azerbaijani Foreign
Ministry said in a statement.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed their release. “We also welcome
Armenia’s decision to provide Azerbaijan with important information that will
facilitate humanitarian demining and avoid future casualties,” he said in a
statement.

“The United States is pleased to support these steps and hopes they will lay the
groundwork for additional cooperation. We continue to call for the return of all
detainees and stand ready to assist the countries of the region in their efforts
to continue cooperation and resolve outstanding issues between them,” added
Blinken.

The Georgian government reported, meanwhile, that Prime Minister Irakli
Gharibashvili personally helped to arrange the deal by negotiating with
Pashinian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

The Armenian-Azerbaijani agreement brokered by Russian President Vladimir Putin
last November calls for the unconditional release of all prisoners held by the
conflicting sides.

Russian peacekeepers deployed in Karabakh after the six-week war have arranged
several prisoner swaps in recent months. No Azerbaijani prisoners are known to
be held in Armenia or Karabakh at present.

A total of 88 Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) and civilians have been freed to
date. More than 100 others are believed to remain in Azerbaijani captivity.
Yerevan regularly demands their immediate release.

Baku says that they are not covered by the truce agreement because they were
captured after it took effect on November 10. Azerbaijani officials have branded
the remaining Armenian detainees as “terrorists.”

At least 16 of them are facing what the Armenian Foreign Ministry condemned last
week as “trumped-up criminal charges.”

“It is evident that Azerbaijan is using the captured people as political
hostages and tools to pursue other goals,” the ministry said in a June 4
statement. It accused Baku of concealing “the real number of prisoners” and
“denying the captivity of dozens of Armenian servicemen and civilians.”

Azerbaijan swaps 15 Armenian troops for map of minefields

TASS – Russia

The detained Armenians were handed over to Armenia on the Azerbaijani-Georgian border with the participation of Georgian representatives

BAKU, June 12. /TASS/. Baku has handed 15 Armenian military personnel detained in the country to Yerevan in exchange for a map of minefields in the Aghdam region, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Saturday.

"According to the agreement reached, on , in exchange for providing Azerbaijan with maps of 97,000 anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in the Aghdam region, 15 detained Armenians were handed over to Armenia on the Azerbaijani-Georgian border with the participation of Georgian representatives," the press release says.

Baku appreciates the support of international mediators in the exchange, including the Georgian government headed by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. It also notes "the mediating role, first of all, of the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker, President of the European Council Charles Michel and the Swedish Chairmanship of the OSCE for their contribution to the process."

Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has confirmed the return of 15 Armenian military personnel, who were captured in Azerbaijan during hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh in the autumn of 2020, he said in Armenia’s Gegharkunik region on Saturday.

"I have good news. Fifteen of our captured brothers are returning home. They are on their way now. When they are in Armenia, I will make a more detailed statement," he noted.

After the end of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh last autumn, Baku regained control of seven areas adjacent to Karabakh, including the Aghdam region, in accordance with the November 10 trilateral agreement.

Demining of the areas affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains a major post-war issue for Baku and Yerevan. Azerbaijan has repeatedly reported cases of military and civilian casualties caused by mines. According to official statistics, since the trilateral statement was signed, more than 120 Azerbaijanis have been killed or injured in such incidents.

Belgian trade mission due in Armenia to study the prospects of cooperation

Public Radio of Armenia
June 2 2021

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium Alexander De Croo in Brussels.

The interlocutors attached importance to the continuous development of political and economic relations between Armenia and Belgium, and the high-level contacts.

Nikol Pashinyan and Alexander De Croo stressed the interest of the governments of the two countries to expand trade and economic ties, implement joint programs in various sectors of the economy and promote democratic reforms in Armenia.

In this regard, the interlocutors attached importance to the effective implementation of the measures envisaged by the Roadmap of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the EU.

The parties discussed the agenda of the reforms being implemented in the Republic of Armenia, especially the reforms in the sphere of the police. Alexander De Croo emphasized the need for popular reform and stressed the EU’s commitment to continuing its support for Armenia.

Emphasizing the development of economic ties with Armenia, Alexander De Croo noted that a Belgian trade mission will visit Armenia to study the prospects and opportunities for the development of trade and investment relations between the two countries. The visit is planned to coincide with the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Armenian community in Belgium.

Asbarez: A Very Bad Habit

Aram Hamparian is the Executive Director of the ANCA

BY ARAM SUREN HAMPARIAN

Our U.S. Department of State has a bad habit of lying about Armenians.

The facts are clear.

The pattern is evident.

In our American public record.

They shamelessly denied and covered up for Turkey about the Armenian Genocide for a century – A CENTURY+.

MULTIPLE GENERATIONS.

FULL LIFE-TIMES.

FOR 106 YEARS.

They still won’t admit the obvious truth that Azerbaijan attacked Artsakh last fall – EVEN AFTER ALIYEV HAS PROUDLY BOASTED ABOUT HAVING ATTACKED ARTSAKH.

They resist clearly calling out Azerbaijan for invading and currently occupying Armenian territory – DESPITE THE CLEAR EVIDENCE OF THIS FACT.

They claim – against all reason – that $120,000,000 in U.S. military aid to Azerbaijan didn’t contribute to Baku’s offensive military capabilities – A PAINFULLY OBVIOUS FALSEHOOD.

They take credit for post-war humanitarian aid – WHEN THEIR OWN RECORD SHOWS JUST $5 MILLION TO HELP ALL THOSE AFFECTED (ARMENIAN AND AZERBAIJANI) SINCE LAST FALL.

They advanced the career of Matt Bryza, misrepresenting him as an “honest broker” – WHEN HE WAS CLEARLY BIASED AGAINST ARMENIANS (unsurprisingly, after retiring, he raked in millions working for foreign/pro-Azerbaijan oil industry interests).

They lied about financing the Turkish Armenian Reconciliation Commission – ONLY TO HAVE THIS LIE UNCOVERED BY A CONGRESSIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE REPORT.

They talk about a diverse Foreign Service – EVEN THOUGH LESS THAN A DOZEN OF THE 23,000 AMERICANS WORKING FOR THE STATE DEPARTMENT ARE OF ARMENIAN HERITAGE.

They lied about Armenian prisoners of war, calling them “detainees” – UNTIL YESTERDAY.

YESTERDAY!

The list goes on.

All too often, when they do tell the truth – it’s because of community, coalition, and Congressional pressure.

When it comes to serious issues impacting Armenians, truth is their exception, sadly, not their rule.

Their default remains falsehood: Expedient. Convenient. Lies.

A very bad habit, hardened over a very long time.

We might – for the sake of courtesy or a misguided desire for comity – politely ignore these lies – but that would be a disservice to America, an abdication of our responsibilities as citizens.

For nothing good can be built upon a foundation of lies.

Lies hurt. They destroy. Sometimes they kill.

We must – as Americans and as Armenians – confront each of these dangerous falsehoods.
Standing up to lies is a hallmark of American citizenship.

Accepting them is wrong – irresponsible on every level.

And, so we must and will call them all out, one by one.

Turn them toward truth.

Toward justice.

Artsakh Foreign Ministry issues statement on anniversary of Sardarapat heroic battle

 10:04,

YEREVAN, MAY 28, ARMENPRESS. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh has issued a statement on the occasion of the anniversary of the Sardarapat heroic battle.

Armenpress presents the statement:

“May the 28th is the day of proclamation of the first Republic of Armenia and the victory of our people in the battle of Sardarapat. The Armenian people managed to restore its independent statehood, which was lost centuries ago.

The heroic battle of Sardarapat is one of the most glorious and memorable pages in the Armenian history.

On this day 103 years ago, the Armenian people managed to unite and defeat the regular Turkish army, which significantly exceeded our forces in number and armaments and invaded with the purpose of completely annihilating the Armenians. Sardarapat was not only a military-political, but also a moral victory. It became a symbol of the unbreakable will, unshakable faith and inexhaustible patriotism of our people, which had been subjected to Genocide for years, lost most of the homeland, and was on the verge of extermination.

The Armenians of Artsakh also played a great role in the battles of Sardarapat, Bash Aparan and Karakilisa, where under the command of prominent military figures of Artsakh participated heroically in forging the victories. In the most difficult military-political situation for the homeland, the representatives of Artsakh, as part of the top political leadership of the First Republic of Armenia, actively participated in the state-building processes too.

For over a century, the victory of Sardarapat has inspired all Armenians, and today, it is of special importance and significance for our people.

Glory to our heroes, to the Armenian statehood, and to our homeland”.
