YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Justice Minister Rustam Badasyan has filed a lawsuit against activist Narek Malyan, but it was sent back by the court for being flawed. Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned about this from the judicial information system.

Badasyan filed a lawsuit against Malyan seeking compensation for damages caused to his honor, dignity, and business reputation.

The Yerevan court of general jurisdiction, however, has decided to return the claim.

The respective statement released in the judicial information system notes, in particular, that the court found that the requirements for the form, content, and attachments of this lawsuit were not complied with.

"The deficiencies in the lawsuit can be eliminated and presented to the court within three days," the statement also reads.

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has expressed gratitude to the US House of Representatives for recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

“Thank you to the House of Representatives in the US for properly characterizing US history and the Armenian genocide in the memory of my grandparents and all their relatives who perished. Genocide should never be used for political expediency or to sell a despot more helicopters. This will make more difficult for Turkey to further play the US State Dept on this issue though I’m sure they will try. It is important that there are economic sanctions tied to Turkeys illegal incursion into Syria as well. Senate resolution is next”, Tankian said on Facebook.

On October 29 the US House of Representatives adopted the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res.296) by a vote of 405 to 11 with 3 voting present.

The most effective firefighter in the U.S. Smokey Bear will visit Armenia
YEREVAN, ARMENIA – Smokey Bear, the face of the longest-running public service
announcement campaign in United States history, travels to Armenia next week as
part of his first-ever trip abroad, continuing his legacy of bringing awareness
to unwanted, human-caused fires. The Smokey Bear wildfire prevention campaign
has had a dramatic impact in the United States since its introduction in 1944.
Smokey Bear’s iconic image—dressed in a ranger's hat, belted blue jeans, and
carrying a shovel—and his one clear message, “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,”
have stood the test of time for over seven decades.

Throughout his illustrious career, Smokey Bear has appeared with thousands and
thousands of children, leaving them with a powerful understanding of what they
can do to prevent wildfires. He has met with presidents and movie stars,
including John F. Kennedy and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to amplify his message.
Thanks to Smokey Bear, several generations of Americans know that the vast
majority of destructive wildfires are started by careless behavior like not
properly putting out a campfire or adults tossing cigarettes out of a car
window. Smokey Bear’s famous catchphrase is recognized by 96 percent of U.S.
adults. 75 percent of young adult outdoor recreationists who are familiar with
Smokey Bear see him as a role model for children.

During his time in Armenia, Smokey Bear, U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy, and
representatives of the U.S. Forest Service will meet with children and
government officials and travel to notable forested areas in and around Yerevan
to share with the public their lessons on how they can show their love for the
outdoors and protect Armenia’s forests and wildlife. See if you can spot
Smokey Bear around town and join him in celebrating his 75th birthday!

Avetik Chalabyan: Armenia authorities decided to follow well-tested path of Bolsheviks Avetik Chalabyan: Armenia authorities decided to follow well-tested path of Bolsheviks

13:05, 18.10.2019

With the false finger-pointing of the new “Pavlik Morozov,” another finger-sucked criminal case has been launched against president Hrayr Tovmasyan of the Constitutional Court (CC) of Armenia. Avetik Chalabyan, Co-founder of the National Agenda Party, noted about this in a Facebook post.

“At the beginning of the week I had written that the time has come for a lawful, constitutional solution to the crisis surrounding the Constitutional Court, and thus to prevent its further deepening, with the further damage being caused to the country’s standing,” he wrote, in particular. “But it turns out that the incumbent authorities decided instead to follow the well-tested path of the Bolsheviks, with the false finger-pointing of the new ‘Pavlik Morozov,’ launching another finger-sucked criminal case against Hrayr Tovmasyan, openly pressuring his family members, including [his] elderly parents and children, and turning all this already into a farce that’s becoming disgusting and reminiscent of Stalinism.

“If we allow our country to go this way today, tomorrow [we] will not stand, we will gradually reach all the way to the year [19]37.

“How did it become possible that by rejecting the past, we now find ourselves at a place which day by day looks more like that same past—moreover, with its worst manifestations?

“And if you agree with me, join in my call, demand to stop this disgusting pressure on Hrayr Tovmasyan’s person and family, and to resolve the CC matter in a lawful, legitimate arena so that it does not become a landmine for the next authorities, and enables to lead the country on the road of democracy and development.”

Brad Sherman: time to recognize Armenian Genocide by overwhelming vote Brad Sherman: time to recognize Armenian Genocide by overwhelming vote

00:35, 18.10.2019

It is time for the United States to reevaluate policies toward Turkey, U.S. congressman Brad Sherman said during the debate on a resolution opposing U.S. withdrawal from Syria.

“Since the 1940s, we have safeguarded Turkey through our membership in NATO and theirs. We protected Turkey from subversion in the 1940s and protected it from the Soviet Union for decades. Recently, over the last 20 years, we have had a policy of obsequious humiliation in our approach to Turkey.

We have kowtowed to Ankara in failing to recognize the Armenian genocide.

In doing so, we have taken a foreign policy normally based on truth and honor, and instead, humiliated ourselves through silence and concealment. It is time to recognize the Armenian genocide by an overwhelming vote here in the House.

It is time for us to stop dishonor in our relationship with Turkey,” he said.

Premier: Economic revolution in Armenia has begun Premier: Economic revolution in Armenia has begun

The economic revolution in Armenia has begun. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Saturday said this in his remarks at the “My Step for Aragatsotn Province” investment business programs forum being held in Sasunik village of Aragatsotn Province.

“The economic revolution and everything connected with civilization first takes place in people’s minds,” Pashinyan added, in particular. “A giant layer of a new generation of businessmen with a new mindset has formed in Armenia.

“Today, the number one factor in economic competition is intelligence, talent, and honesty, as well as the awareness of the mission.

“Let’s first change ourselves, our environment, our homeland which shall become the country of our universal dreams. (…). It shall be the country of our national dreams.

“The economic revolution is about fulfilling our dreams. To fulfill those dreams, we need to have a strong state, [and] which to have, we need to have a strong economy.”

Asbarez: Governor Newsom Signs Bill to Offset GCC April 24 Campus Closure Costs

Senator Portantino (right) and GCC President David Viar’s testimony on behalf of SB 568 during a higher education assembly in June, 2019

SACRAMENTO—On Wednesday, the Glendale Community College Armenian Genocide Commemoration Bill, SB 568, authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge), was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Prior to the passage of SB 568, GCC would have had to forfeit nearly $500,000 if it were to close on April 24 to commemorate the Armenian Genocide. Unlike the K through 12 Education Code, which gave the GUSD the ability to properly respect and close on April 24, Community Colleges had no such authority prior to today. This situation created an emotional and practical problem for many Glendale families where one child attended GCC and another attended a school which closed. It also created a significant financial difficulty for GCC in order to properly respect such an important and solemn day for many of the school families and the greater GCC community. To rectify the situation, GCC Board Members requested legislative help from Senator Portantino. As a long-time friend and supporter of the college and the Armenian American Community, Senator Portantino respectfully took up the cause. Today’s action is the final appropriate result!

“Two years ago, I was honored to have been asked by GCC Board members to help offset the cost of closing on April 24th. Today, I am very proud to have sent a bill to the Governor to help our Armenian Community, greater community, the faculty, administrators, and students of GCC solemnly and appropriately commemorate the Armenian Genocide without unnecessary financial pressure. I am grateful to Governor Newsom, who continues to support and recognize the importance of the Armenian American Community in California, for his signature, sensitivity and understanding of this situation,” commented Senator Portantino.

Senator Portantino, who has a long and positive relationship with the Armenian American and Glendale Community College community, negotiated directly with the Community College Chancellor’s Office to bring an amenable solution to this issue. The bill received bipartisan support in the Senate and the Assembly. The signing of SB 568 is the culmination of those discussions and actions.

“Glendale Community College commends Senator Portantino for his leadership and the Legislature and Governor Newsom for their support in enactment of this important law. GCC will use this legal day of remembrance, and other opportunities throughout the year, to educate our students and communities about the Armenian Genocide to assure such atrocities never happen again,” said Dr. David Viar, Superintendent/President of GCC.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Glendale Community College, I thank Senator Portantino’s tireless effort on behalf of our students. We are extremely grateful that the Senator championed this issue and enabled us to commemorate the Armenian Genocide by closing our campuses without incurring a financial penalty,” added Board of Trustees President Dr. Vahé Peroomian.

GCC President Dr. David Viar and Executive Vice President Dr. Anthony Culpepper travelled to Sacramento over the last year to offer testimony in support of SB 568. In addition to Chairing the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Portantino also Chairs the Senate Select Committee on California, Armenia & Artsakh Trade, Art, Cultural and Economic Exchange. He recently helped facilitate the formal Memorandum of Understanding between California and the Republic of Armenia, which included the establishment of a California Trade Desk in Yerevan. He was in New York with Governor Newsom, Prime Minister Pashinyan, and High Commissioner Zareh Sinanyan for the historic MOU signing event.

“It is such good karma that I was sitting in Yerevan when I received the news from the Governor’s office that SB 568 was signed. Clearly, the benefits of SB 568 go far beyond financial. When GCC closes on April 24th it educates many non-Armenians about the historical significance of April 24th and the horror of the first Genocide of the 20th Century,” concluded Senator Portantino.
