Turkish Press: Spain rejects Armenian ‘genocide’ motion
Motion defeated 17-9, with 9 abstentions, with 14 'no' votes cast by ruling People’s Party
By Hasan Esen
MADRID
The Spanish parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday rejected a motion supporting the Armenian allegations on the incidents of 1915, in the last years of the Ottoman Empire.
The bill was defeated by a 17-9 vote, with nine abstentions. All but three of the 17 "no" votes were cast by the ruling People’s Party.
The motion to recognize the Armenian "genocide" allegations was submitted in 2016 by the leftist, Catalonian ERC party.
Turkey's position on the events is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia in 1915 occurred after some sided with invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.
Ankara does not accept the alleged "genocide" but acknowledges there were casualties on both sides during World War I.
Turkey objects to the presentation of the incidents as “genocide” but describes the 1915 events as a tragedy for both sides.
Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia plus international experts to tackle the issue.

A parliamentary delegation from Nagorno-Karabakh has visited Germany to discuss ties and Lebanon to attend a conference.
Vagram Balayan, a deputy speaker of the Karabakh parliament, visited Lebanon on 21-23 March. In Beirut, he delivered a scientific report at an international scientific conference devoted to the 100th anniversary of the first Armenian republic which existed in December 1917 – July 1918, the report said, citing the press service of the Karabakh parliament.
On 27-31 March, Balayan and member of parliament Gagik Petrosyan attended events in Germany.
On 27 March, Balayan met Lars Patrick Berg and (?Daniel Rotman), members of the parliament of Baden-Wuerttemberg, to discuss prospects for cooperation between the Karabakh parliament and the legislature of Baden-Wuerttemberg and also regional development. The meeting was attended by Karabakh's permanent representative to Germany Harutyun Grigoryan, the report said.
On 29 March, Balayan, Petrosyan and Grigoryan met members of the Bundestag from Brandenburg (?Stefan Kotter), Andreas Kalbitz and Andreas Galau at the Bundestag in Berlin to discuss possible ways of parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation.
On 30 March, the Karabakh delegation visited the Armenian embassy in Berlin to meet the ambassador to discuss the Karabakh problem, regional challenges and economic and culture programmes for Karabakh.

On the last day of their visit, the Karabakh delegation attended an event organised by the Armenian community in Cologne on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Karabakh "liberation movement". At the event, Balayan gave the community a medal commemorating the anniversary, News.am said.
Azerbaijan's breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts came under the control of ethnic Armenian troops in the early 1990s.

The Naghash ensemble : l’exil arménien en chansons
Pratique. Mercredi 28 mars à 20 heures. Chapelle Corneille à Rouen. De 10 à 25 €. www.operaderouen.fr
Sports: Henrikh Mkhitaryan is Arsenal’s best performing player: WhoScored
PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is Arsenal’s best performing player at the club, beating former Gunner Alexis Sanchez, after a bright start to his new life in London, WhoScored statistics reveal.
WhoScored use a number of statistics to put together a match rating for players each game. They then average those ratings over the season to rank each player against each other.
Mkhitaryan is top of the list in the current Arsenal squad, with a Premier League rating of 7.51. He also has as many man-of-the-match awards (two) as anyone in Arsene Wenger’s side this season, despite only appearing in six games.
For any Arsenal fan, that also beats Alexis Sanchez’s rating at Arsenal (7.33) and the Chilean’s rating at Manchester United (7.45), the Daily Cannon says.
As for European competition, Mkhitaryan’s rating is slightly better still, at 7.52. For comparison, the Armenian’s league rating at United was 6.96, and in Europe it was 7.33.
"The stats just support what most of us are seeing on the pitch. Mkhitaryan is finding his feet well after struggling in Manchester, and is working hard to get back to his best. His performances against AC Milan home and away were certainly the highlights so far," author Dan Critchlow says.
"One thing that perhaps deserves more recognition is how well he contributes defensively. In the second leg against Milan, the 29-year-old made as many tackles as all his teammates combined."
The Armenia international endured a difficult 18-month spell under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United before swapping Old Trafford for the Emirates in January as part of the swap deal which saw Alexis Sanchez move in the opposite direction.
While Sanchez has struggled badly, scoring just once in 10 games, since his high-profile move, Mkhitaryan appears to be thriving in an attack-minded Arsenal side.
The 29-year-old has already provided six assists and scored in consecutive games, including his maiden Arsenal goal in last week’s 2-0 over AC Milan in the Europa League.

Armenia annuls normalization protocols with Turkey
The Associated Press March 1, 2018 Thursday 5:01 PM GMT Armenia annuls normalization protocols with Turkey YEREVAN, Armenia YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) - Armenia's president has annulled long-dormant protocols aimed at normalizing ties with Turkey. According to his spokesman, Vladimir Akopyan, President Serzh Sargsyan made the announcement Thursday at a meeting of the country's security council. The so-called Zurich Protocols signed by Yerevan and Ankara in 2009 were designed to open the Turkey-Armenia border and normalize diplomatic ties. The agreement required ratification by both countries' parliaments. Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in protest of the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominantly ethnic-Armenian region of Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh now is under the control of forces that claim to be local ethnic Armenians but that Azerbaijan alleges include Armenian troops. The countries are also embroiled in a dispute over the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians a century ago by Ottoman Turks.
