Pashinyan, Pelosi Discuss U.S.-Armenia Relations, Regional Stability

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan welcomes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sept. 18

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is leading a Congressional delegation to Armenia, on Sunday met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to discuss furthering relations between the United States and Armenia, as well as highlight the importance of security and stability in the region.

Pelosi, whose delegation includes representatives Frank Pallone, Jackie Speier and Anna Eshoo, strongly condemned what she called the “illegal attacks” by Azerbaijan on Armenia’s territory and emphasized the importance of democracy, sovereignty and security during a press conference earlier on Sunday.

Pashinyan and Pelosi also discussed the recent aggression by Azerbaijan against Armenia’s sovereign territory and issues relating to the withdrawal of the Azerbaijani units from Armenia’s territory. The possibilities of the unblocking of transportation infrastructure in the region, the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict were also touched upon.

In welcoming Pelosi to Armenia, Pashinyan underscored “the clear position of the United States” following Azerbaijan’s aggressive attack last week on Armenia’s sovereign territory. Referring to the United States Security Council session focusing on the large-scale attacks, Pashinyan said that Yerevan is looking to the U.S. to keep the matter of Armenia’s sovereignty on the Security Council’s agenda.

“We see the readiness of the US government to support the democratic agenda in our country. I want to express our dedication to the agenda of democratic reforms, despite the fact that, as you see, it’s not an easy path,” Pashinyan told Pelosi and the delegation.

“The support to democracy in Armenia, the resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the counteraction to Turkey over Nagorno Karabakh, and in all other terms we are the friend of Armenia. We are here by respecting your government,” Pelosi told Pashinyan.

“The thing is that when we travel to any country, it has a purpose of showing respect, listening and learning, but I can say frankly that this delegation which came from the United States to Armenia has brought with it the love and the respect of the American people to your government and the love to the people of Armenia,” added Pelosi.

The Speaker of the House assured that the U.S. will continue actively contributing to the programs aimed at further expanding “the bilateral multisectoral mutual partnership and developing democracy in Armenia,” according to Pashinyan’s press office.

Pelosi and her delegation visited the Dizidernagapert Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex, where Pelosi was awarded Armenia’s “Order of Honor.”

She also gave a speech at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, in an event organized by the U.S. Embassy in Armenia, where she reiterated the U.S.’s support to protecting Armenia’s security and sovereignty.

Pelosi also touched the House passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution in 2019 and the eventual recognition by President Joe Biden in 2021. She praised her colleague and the author of the resolution, Rep. Adam Schiff for his tireless efforts in advocating for Armenian issues in Congress.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that many villages in Armenia have emptied out also because of the fact that since pre-school age children haven’t had any chance or prospect for proper education in those villages.

Speaking at the Cabinet meeting, the PM said that the parents preferred to leave the villages to create better education prospects for their children.

He said that the new kindergartens and schools which are being opened in villages will become the cornerstone of revival for several villages.

Pashinyan emphasized the inter-village educational complex program.

“We will implement such programs for villages which don’t have the sufficient numbers for having their separate school or kindergarten and there is a chance to bring the children of several villages together in one place. We will build new buildings, equip them, we will build new roads leading to these complexes, we will buy new school buses and we will ensure their right of receiving proper education,” Pashinyan said, adding that the program will also enable the mothers of these children to have access to education, to be involved in public and economic activities, which in turn will become a factor of political, economic and civilizational development of Armenia, and numerous families will overcome poverty through education and work.

“Talent promotion, discovering talents and development of protection mechanisms are of special importance for us,” he said.

Berdzor-Lachin mayor on Azerbaijanis breaking town sign: Let them show the world their nature, brutality

NEWS.am
Armenia – Aug 28  2022

All displaced residents of Berdzor (Lachin) town have already settled, most of them have moved to Armenia, and four families have settled in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Mayor of Berdzor, Artsakh, Narek Aleksanyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am about this.

"They are currently living on rent in Armenia, whereas in Artsakh they are still in hotels. The displaced persons in Artsakh will be provided with apartments; the apartments will be available by the end of next month. A certificate of compensation will be handed to all displaced people, regardless of everything," Aleksanyan added.

Referring to the fact that Azerbaijanis started committing atrocities immediately after entering Berdzor, the latter’s mayor said that such behavior was expected from them.

"I didn't expect anything else from the enemy, it is just showing its brutality, I didn't expect anything else. Let them break the [Berdzor] sign, let them show the world their nature, their brutality—even towards a sign," he said.

As per the mayor of Berdzor, according to the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020, the Berdzor, Sus, and Aghavno communities of Artsakh were to be handed over to Azerbaijan, but this was put off since the new alternative motorway was not completed yet, and only now they have been handed over.

"According to the statement of November 9, Kashatagh region [of Artsakh] should have been handed over on December 1 [of 2020]. However, as it remained in the area of the corridor, they were not handed over. Three settlements of Kashatagh region fall into the new corridor; and if [Armenian] diplomacy works well, it will be possible to settle these three settlements," he added.

On Friday, the Azerbaijani army was deployed in the Berdzor administrative capital of the Kashatagh region of Artsakh, and in its Aghavno and Sus villages.
Artsakh is currently linked to Armenia by the old route via Berdzor, but the new route is expected to start operating at the beginning of September.

 20:01,

YEREVAN, AUGUST 25, ARMENPRESS. Within the framework of the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, the meeting of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and the Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Mishustin took place in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister.

Mikhail Mishustin first conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to Prime Minister Pashinyan and noted, “Recently, you discussed with each other the issues on the agenda of the relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia. I also met with you recently in Minsk within the framework of the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council.

Of course, it is necessary to continue the dialogue on important topics, both on the bilateral agenda and on our relations within the EAEU framework. I would like to emphasize once again that we highly value our friendly, fraternal relations with Armenia, which are based on deep historical and spiritual ties between our peoples. Next week, on August 29, we will mark a significant anniversary – the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, which laid the foundations for allied relations between the Russian Federation and Armenia.

Together with our Armenian partners, we adopt operational decisions aimed at protecting our trade and economic cooperation, including in the conditions of illegal sanctions against Russia. We have concrete results. according to the results of the first 6 months of the current year, compared to the same period of the previous year, our mutual trade turnover increased by 42%. In absolute numbers, it reached 1 billion 600 million USD. By the way, this is a record high indicator in our trade turnover. As for the investment of Russian capital in Armenia, it reaches 2 billion USD.

Of course, we want to speed up work on priority projects in the fields of transport, industry, and energy. It is important to create favorable conditions for business activities in order to effectively use the opportunities of SMEs. By the way, Armenia is dong that very effectively in the case of Russian companies, I also hope that Russia does the same for Armenian companies. In this regard, the event to be held in Armenia in September with the participation of Russian companies will be a good platform. The delegation will be headed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexey Overchuk.

We are also working hard to expand the use of national currencies in bilateral trade. I am sure that it will contribute to the growth of our trade turnover, as well as to the diversification of its components, which is very important. We pay primary attention to the unblocking of economic and transport infrastructures in the South Caucasus, in line with the agreement of the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Our meeting today is held within the framework of the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council. As a Union, we are successfully overcoming the consequences of global economic instability. You also talked about it today. I am confident that together we will be able to first of all ensure the economic stability of the EAEU member states and, most importantly, to raise the living standards of our citizens.

Thank you."

In his turn, Nikol Pashinyan said, “Thank you, dear Mikhail Vladimirovich, I am very glad for our regular meeting. These meetings are important for us in the context of managing situations that, unfortunately, often arise.

However, there is also good news. the numbers you talked about are a very specific result of our work. I remember during my official visit to Russia in April, when we met and discussed what we should do together in order to somehow manage the challenges that have faced our economies. I am very happy that today, this conversation is already showing concrete results, particularly for the economy of Armenia. You emphasized how much the trade turnover between Armenia and Russia has increased. I would like to emphasize once again that I consider this a concrete result of our conversations and joint efforts.

I called you recently to thank for the operational solutions that were adopted, in particular, in the context of crisis situations at the Upper Lars checkpoint. The representatives of Armenia and Russia found very prompt solutions with together with their Georgian counterparts, as a result of which we were able to overcome the situation.

The high-level political dialogue between Armenia and Russia continues, it is an effective dialogue. Two days ago, in a telephone conversation with Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin we also emphasized the importance of the 25-year anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between Armenia and Russia. In general, this is a jubilee year for us. In April, we marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Russia. These days we also have another anniversary, and I am sure that these anniversaries reflect the atmosphere of our relationship. I am confident that despite all the difficulties, together we will overcome the situations that create problems for our economies and cooperation. I am very glad that today we have the opportunity to discuss the extensive agenda of our bilateral relations. As for the Eurasian Economic Union, we discussed everything in detail in the narrow-format session, and I think we came to constructive solutions."
