KHACHIK GALSTYAN: TURKEY AND AZERBAIJAN ATTEMPTING TO GRAB THE MAXIMUM

Turkey and Azerbaijan are trying to grab the maximum form the process
of settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Press Secretary of
the leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party Khachik Galstyan told a
press conference today.

According to him, Armenia has assumed a balanced policy in the process,
while the other two parties seem to be in a nervous fit.

Speaking about the position of the Prosperous Armenia Party on the
establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations without preconditions,
Khachik Galstyan said: "We think Turkey has made certain strategic
mistakes in its policy. First, Turkey had not calculated well the
influence of Azerbaijan on the shaping of its foreign policy. Yielding
to the demands of the Azeri authorities, Turkey attempted to tie
the Armenian-Turkish normalization to the Karabakh peace process. I
think these wrong strategic calculations allowed the Armenian side
to stiffen the position on the Karabakh issue, which became apparent
in the President’s recent statements and speeches."

TBILISI: Will Georgia Recognise The Armenian Genocide?

WILL GEORGIA RECOGNISE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE?

Georgia

The Armenian Diaspora in Georgia is asking the Georgian authorities
to consider recognising the humanitarian catastrophe affecting the
Armenian population which took place around 100 years ago as genocide.

Letters containing such a request were addressed to the President,
Parliament, Parliamentary factions and individual MPs. such
organisations as Georgia’s Armenian Cooperation Centre and Association
of Armenian Students have asked Georgia to discuss the issue at a
Parliamentary session prior to April 24, commemorated as the day of
the Armenian Genocide, and thus pay tribute to those killed.

Some Georgian commentators think that as this request has been made
Georgia should also send an official request to the Armenian Parliament
and President to recognise the genocide and ethnic cleansing conducted
by the Russians and their puppet regimes in the separatist regions of
Georgia Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the nineties of the last century
and during the recent Russian invasion and demand an assessment of
the conduct of the ethnic Armenian so-called Bagramian Battalion,
which fought on the side of the Abkhaz separatists and participated
in the ethnic cleansing of the Georgian population.

SENATORS CALL ON OBAMA TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

— Boxer Letter Urges President to "Stand on the Right Side of History"

WASHINGTON, DC – California Senator Barbara Boxer (D) was joined
this week by more than a dozen of her Senate colleagues in calling
on President Obama "to stand on the right side of history and
unequivocally affirm the Armenian Genocide," reported the Armenian
National Committee of America (ANCA).

"We would like to thank Senator Boxer and her Senate colleagues for
their effort to end Turkey’s gag rule on U.S. affirmation of the
Armenian Genocide – a morally bankrupt policy that continues to
undermine our nation’s credibility in the fight to end the cycle of
Genocide," said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. "President
Obama has a clear choice to make on April 24th – to emerge as the
torchbearer of truth regarding the Armenian Genocide or to remain
the Turkish government’s accomplice in the denial of this crime
against humanity."

The letter, circulated by Senator Boxer and sent to the White House
earlier today with the signatures of 14 Senators from 10 different
states, underscored that, "despite an irrefutable body of evidence,
the United States Government has yet to recognize the events of
1915-1923 by their rightful name." The signatories urged the
President, this April 24 "to correct this injustice and finally
acknowledge one of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century for
what it was – genocide."

In comments to the ANCA, Senator John Ensign (R-NV), a co-signer of
the letter, noted that, "This month will mark the 95th anniversary
of the Armenian Genocide. The atrocities that occurred 95 years
ago have yet to be recognized by our government as a genocide. In
this letter, my colleagues and I urge President Obama to once and
for all declare that the lives lost during this dark period were a
result of a deliberate and intentional massacre of innocent men,
women, and children."

During his campaign for the White House, President Obama repeatedly
promised to recognize the Armenian Genocide, but, since, taking
office, has broken his pledge, even going so far as pressuring the
U.S. Congress against adopting legislation commemorating this crime
against humanity.

The full list of Senators co-signing the letter is as follows:
Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairwoman of the Environment and Public
Works Committee; Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chairman of the Banking
Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic Policy; John Ensign (D-OH),
Ranking Member of the Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on
Communications; Russ Feingold (D-WI), Chairman of the Foreign
Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on Africa; Dianne Feinstein (D-
CA), Chairwoman of the Select Intelligence Committee; Frank
Lautenberg (D-NJ), Chairman of the Commerce Committee’s
Subcommittee on Surface Transportation; Carl Levin (D-MI), Chairman
of the Armed Services Committee; Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman
of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee; Jack Reed (D-RI),
Chairman of the Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Emerging
Threats; Joe Lieberman (ID-CT), Chairman of the Homeland Security
Committee; Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Chairwoman of the

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

As you know, April 24 marks Armenian Remembrance Day 2010, the
ninety-fifth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Despite an
irrefutable body of evidence, the United States Government has yet
to recognize the events of 1915-1923 by their rightful name. We
urge you-on this April 24-to correct this injustice and finally
acknowledge one of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century for
what it was-genocide.

Over the years, this deliberate massacre of the Armenians has been
well-documented through eye-witness accounts and confirmed by
numerous scholars. Simply put-between 1915 and 1923, more than 1.5
million Armenians were marched to their deaths in the deserts of
the Middle East, murdered in concentration camps, drowned at sea,
and forced to endure horrific acts of brutality at the hands of the
Ottoman Empire.

In his memoirs, Henry Morgenthau, the American Ambassador to the
Ottoman Empire between 1913 and 1916, wrote: "When the Turkish
authorities gave the orders for these deportations, they were
merely giving the death warrant to a whole race; they understood
this well, and in their conversations with me, they made no
particular attempt to conceal the fact." And even as it was just
beginning, the New York Times reported the mass killing of
Armenians as "systematic," "authorized," and "organized by the
government."

Tragically, Adolf Hitler even used the Ottoman Empire’s action
against the Armenians to justify the extermination of the Jews,
saying in 1939, "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation
of the Armenians?"

The fact is that many have affirmed the Armenian Genocide, and it
is long past time that the United States do the same, joining with
Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy,
Lebanon, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia,
Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay, Venezuela, the Vatican and over 40
U.S. states.

While we fully acknowledge the importance of the U.S.-Turkey
relationship, we should never, for any reason, fail to call a
tragedy of this magnitude by its rightful name. As such – on this
April 24 – we urge you to stand on the right side of history and
unequivocally affirm the Armenian Genocide.

Thank you for your consideration of this important request.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

Yerevan (Yerkir) – Former presidential nominee, US Senator John McCain
has reiterated his view that genocide was committed against Armenians
in the Ottoman Empire.

"The USA and Turkey have been friends and allies for years. Turks
have fought alongside US troops in many wars and I hope we will do
our utmost to maintain relations," McCain said in the interview with
the Voice of America.

He said that the Armenian genocide should not become a perpetual
issue in Turkish-Armenian relations.

"I am confident that what happened was genocide, but I state it was
perpetrated in other times and under another government. This should
be considered by all parties."

Ninety-Five Trees From Western Armenia To Be Planted In Tsitsernakab

NINETY-FIVE TREES FROM WESTERN ARMENIA TO BE PLANTED IN TSITSERNAKABERD ON APRIL 22

ArmInfo
2010-04-20 12:24:00

ArmInfo. VivaCell-MTS’ staff members together with their colleagues
from OSCE and other international organizations volunteered in a
big tree planting event at Tsitsernakaberd. The tree planting is
part of a series of environmental events held in the frames of the
Green Generation Campaign organized by the FPWC (Foundation for the
Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets) in partnership with
Armenia’s leading mobile operator and the Armenian Genocide Museum
Institute, VivaCell-MTS press service reported.

On April 3rd the Company’s volunteers already prepared the territory of
Tsitsernakaberd for the planting by removing the stones and breaking
up the soil. The peak point of the Green Generation Campaign will
be a solemn tree planting ceremony on April 22nd in the park of the
Armenian Genocide Memorial. That day 95 trees will be planted to honor
the victims of the Genocide and to remind the younger generation of
Armenia that they have to care for the future without forgetting
the past. Many guests of the scientific conference organized by
the Museum-Institute of Armenian Genocide will participate in the
tree-planting, alongside with VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph
Yirikian, Director of Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan,
and Head of FPWC Ruben Khachatryan. "We left for the Western Armenia
especially to bring trees typical for that lands. Let the future park
of these trees become a peculiar symbol," R. Khachatryan said.

In addition, VivaCell-MTS gifted nearly 20 books to the
Museum-Institute. "We will work to preserve our national
self-consciousness, proud of our people and will achieve this goal,"
R. Yirikian said. For his part, Hayk Demoyan said that the books
gifted by the company are very valuable, for they contain firsthand
testimonies of the tragedy that happened 95 years ago. These books
were issued by 100-200 samples and are very rare. They will find their
proper places in the Golden Library Fund of the Museum, Demoyan said.

Involving children and youth, in particular, the event organizers aim
to change the common tree planting activities into a continuous and
sustainable project. Due to the ongoing efforts of FPWC in partnership
with VivaCell- MTS to establish environmental education and to raise
awareness for nature protection the topic has now shifted into the
focus of public attention. VivaCell-MTS and FPWC call all citizens
of Armenia to join the Green Generation Campaign dedicated to the
Earth Day!
