HE MAKES UP STORIES ABOUT THE PAST WHEN HE SPEAKS AT BANQUETS HERE’S A
TYPICAL STORY THAT HE TELLS:

A YEAR BEFORE WE LOST TO THE DALLAS COWBOYS IN THE SUPERBOWL 24-3. WE
WEREN’T DOING WELL THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY PHONE CALL ON THE SIDELINE
AND IT RANG, AT HALFTIME COACH SHULA PICKED IT UP PRESIDENT NIXON WAS
CALLING AND HE LIKED TO SUGGEST SOME PLAYS.

NIXON SAID COACH YOU DIDN’T DO WELL IN THE FIRST HALF I WOULD LIKE TO
SUGGEST THE FLEA FLICKER PASS BECAUSE I THINK YOU WILL SCORE A
TOUCHDOWN.

IN THE SECOND HALF WE TRIED THE PASS IT BACKFIRED MEL RENFRO PICKED IT
OFF AND RAN IT BACK FOR A TOUCHDOWN.

COACH SHULA LOST A LOT OF RESPECT IN PRESIDENT NIXON’S PLAYCALLING THE
NEXT YEAR WE PLAYED THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS.

COACH SHULA CALLED ME OVER AND SAID I WAS IN CHARGE OF THE EMERGENCY
PHONE THIS WAS PART OF MY RESPONSIBILITY.

I DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TO DO DURING THE GAME SO COACH SHULA SAID IF IT
RINGS PICK IT UP AND SAY HI THIS IS GARO YEPREMIAN ON THE 40 YARD
LINE OF THE LOS ANGELES COLISEIUM MAY I HELP YOU.

NOBODY CALLED UNTIL THERE WERE FOUR MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME I PICKED
UP THE PHONE AND A YOUNG LADY SAID MR. YEPREMIAN I HAVE THE PRESIDENT
ON THE LINE COULD YOU HOLD I WAS EXCITED, I HAD ONLY BEEN IN THIS
COUNTRY SIX YEARS.

THIS WAS A BIG HONOR FOR ME TO BE TALKING ON THE PHONE WITH THE
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES THE HIGHEST POWER IN THE WORLD.

ALL OF A SUDDEN A VOICE CAME ON THE OTHER END AND SAID GARO MAKE NO
MISTAKE ABOUT THIS, I REALIZED THIS WAS PRESIDENT NIXON, I SAID SIR IT
IS A BIG HONOR FOR ME TO BE ON THE PHONE WITH YOU, IF ONLY MY FAMILY,
FANS AND TEAMMATES KNEW ABOUT THIS WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU.

THE PRESIDENT SAID I NEED A FAVOR, I SAID CERTAINLY WHATEVER YOU LIKE
DO YOU NEED AN AUTOGRAPH OR SOMETHING, HE SAID LOOK THERE ARE FOUR
MINUTES LEFT ON THE CLOCK, I HAVE A WAGER WITH VICE PRESIDENT SPIRO
AGNEW THAT THE POINT SPREAD WILL BE SEVEN POINTS CAN YOU HELP ME, I
TOLD HIM, I COULDN’T DO THAT TO MY TEAMMATES, FANS AND FAMILY.

THERE WAS SILENCE ON THE PHONE FOR ABOUT TWO MINUTES, I HEAR THE
SOUNDS OF PAPER BEING SHUFFLED AROUND IN THE BACKGROUND, PRESIDENT
NIXON CAME BACK AND SAID GARO, I HAVE CHECKED ON YOUR PAPERS THAT YOU
HAVE FILED TO BE A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, ALL OF A SUDDEN I
CHANGED MY TUNE.

I SAID SIR DON’T WORRY, THEN COACH SHULA CALLED ME OVER AND TOLD ME TO
KICK A 42 YARD FIELD GOAL, I COULD KICK 42 YARDERS IN MY DREAMS, IT
WAS AN EASY CHIP SHOT.

I STARTED THINKING HOW TO DO THIS IF I KICKED IT LOW ENOUGH IT WOULD
BE BLOCKED, AND I WOULD NOT BE BLAMED IF SOMETHING HAPPENED, I KICKED
IT LOW ENOUGH AND BALL BOUNCED EVERYWHERE.

EARL MORRALL MY HOLDER TOLD ME TO PICK IT UP, I SAID WHY DON’T YOU
PICK IT UP, HE INFORMED HE WAS 38 YEARS OLD, SO I DECIDED TO PICK IT
UP THE BALL AND THROW IT NOT REALIZING MY HAND WAS TOO SMALL.

BILL BRUNDIGE CAME TOWARDS ME AND I TRIED TO THROW IT BUT THE BALL
SLIPPED OUT OF MY HAND, MIKE BASS PICKED IT OFF AND RAN IT BACK FOR A
TOUCHDOWN.

TO CUT THE STORY SHORT SIX MONTHS LATER, I BECAME A CITIZEN. THAT IS
THE STORY, I TELL AT BANQUETS AND I ALSO TELL THEM, THAT I HAVE HIGH
REGARD FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, IT IS JUST A JOKE BECAUSE
PRESIDENT NIXON GAVE THE REDSKINS A PLAY BEFORE THE SUPERBOWL, THAT
DIDN’T WORK, THAT IS WHY I TELL THIS STORY.

I THOUGHT JAN STENERUD (K.C.), ROY GERELA (PITT), TONI FRITSCH
(DALLAS), HORST MUHLMAN (CINN), JOHN SMITH (N.E.), BOBBY HOWFIELD
(NYJ) AND NICK MIKE-MAYER (BUFF) WERE THE BEST THAT I PLAYED AGAINST.

TOM DEMPSEY WHO BOOTED A 63-YARD FIELD GOAL FOR NEW ORLEANS WAS A
STRONG KICKER, I GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR THAT KICK, BUT HE WASN’T
CONSISTENT. EVEN THOU WE WON I HAVE TO SUFFER THE HUMILIATION FOR THE
REST OF MY LIFE, AND MY KIDS WILL SUFFER FOR IT THE REST OF THEIR
LIVES, WHEN MY KIDS INTRODUCE THEMSELVES PEOPLE SAY, YOUR DAD SCREWED
UP IN THE SUPERBOWL, THAT BOTHERS ME, BUT YOU TAKE IT IN STRIDE AND
MAKE A JOKE OUT OF IT.

ONE TIME, I WAS AT THE AIRPORT AND A GUY POINT ME OUT TO HIS SON AND
SAID GARO YEPREMIAN, HE PLAYED 15 YEARS IN THE NFL, KICKER OF THE
DECADE, HE PLAYED IN THE LONGEST GAME IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL,
PLAYED IN THE THREE SUPERBOWLS, AND SCORED OVER 1,000 POINTS GREAT
KICKER HE TURNED HIS BACK AND WALKED AWAY.

THAT WAS DEFINITELY A CHANGE OF PACE, WHEN SOMEONE ASK ME HOW IS YOUR
PASSING ARM, I TELL HIM I DON’T REMEMBER, THEN THE GUY SAYS, I
REMEMBER IT LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY, AND HIS WIFE WILL USUALLY SAY HE
HAS A GREAT MEMORY, I SAY REALLY, I WILL GIVE HIM A TEST RIGHT NOW, HE
WILL GET NERVOUS, BUT I TELL HIM THAT EVERYBODY PASSES THIS TEST, MY
QUESTION IS DO YOU REMEMBER LAST YEAR SUPERBOWL, HE’LL SAY OF COURSE
IT WAS NEW ENGLAND AND ST. LOUIS, THEN MY NEXT QUESTION IS DO YOU
REMEMBER THE LAST PASS KURT WARNER THREW IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, HE’LL
SAY NO, I DON’T, I SAY THANK YOU VERY MUCH YOU REMEMBER MINE 30 YEARS
AGO SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN SPECIAL.

GARO YEPREMIAN LEFT SCHOOL AT 15 AND EDUCATED HIMSELF HE SPEAKS FOUR
LANGUAGES ENGLISH, ARMENIAN, GREEK AND TURKISH.

GARO CAME TO USA IN 1966 FROM CYPRUS. GARO AND HIS WIFE MARITZA HAVE 2
SONS GARO, JR. 26 IN 2004 AZAD 20 IN 2004 A KICKER AT MEDERSVILLE
UNIVERSITY IN LANCASTER, PA.

GARO AND HIS WIFE MARITZA LIVE IN OXFORD, PA.

GARO’S OLDER BROTHER KIKRO WAS GM OF NASL NEW YORK COSMOS AND HIS
YOUNGER BROTHER BERJ YEPREMIAN WAS A KICKER AT MIAMI KILLIAN HIGH
SCHOOL AND WENT ON TO KICK FOR 4 YEARS AT UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA.

General Announcement

ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY WORLD COUNCIL, 24 November 2009

ADL became a traditional party centered in Armenia

As informed by mass media reports, on 2-8 October 2009 the
ADL-Armenagan unifying assembly was convened in Yerevan with the
participation of 56 delegates representing 16 chapters of the reformed
Armenagan-ADL and of Diasporan ADL chapters. Thus, present were party
delegates from Armenia: various districts of Yerevan, as well as
from the provinces Arakadzodn, Armavir, Shirak, Lori, Vayots Dzor,
Zangezur and Davoush, and from the Diaspora: US Eastern and Western
coasts, Canada, London, Paris, Geneva, Beirut, Baghdad, as well as,
for the first time, two representatives from Teheran as observers.

Several party members had sent letters from different districts
regretting that they could not attend the assembly for reasons beyond
their control.

Prior to the opening of the assembly, a delegation representing various
districts, including three noted past chairmen of the party’s Central
Committee, were received by the president of the Republic of Armenia
Serj Sarkisyan, president of the National Assembly (Parliament)
Hovig Aprahamyan, Prime Minister Dikran Sarkisyan and Catholicos of
All Armenians HH Karekin II, and discussed the party’s activities in
the motherland and abroad, issues related to Armenia-Turkey relations,
and efforts for economic development of Armenia.

The formal inauguration of the party was held on the morning of
November 3rd in the Arno Babajanian Hall of Philharmony of Armenia
with the participation of close to 300 members of ADL and Armenagan
as well as representatives of political parties of Armenia and many
journalists. On the same afternoon the assembly continued in the main
hall of the Tekeyan Center, restricted only to party members. The
session was chaired by Armen Manuelian and dealt with a previously
prepared agenda. The delegates from the Diaspora were impressed by the
youthful practicality and maturity of the Armenagan-ADL leadership
and expressed confidence that the party presents a promising future
in Armenia, and pledged to help the strengthening of Armenagan-ADL
by all means.

Dr. Arshavir Gundjian presented in a concise manner the current sad
situation created by a group of irresponsible people in the party
driven by vanity, vengeance and adventurism. Without mentioning
names not to glorify the said clique, Dr. Gundjian and other
participants talked about the wasted efforts spent in the US and
Canada particularly in February 2009 to bring about a consensus or
cooperation with the said group for the sake of and to the benefit
of the party. Unfortunately, all attempts of consultation, counsel,
advice, admonition were to no avail. The group that considered
itself above the law, along with their profane representative in
Armenia, merited to be declared persona non grata. Faced with this
situation, said Dr. Gundjian, we have come not simply to attend the
assembly of Armenagan-ADL, but also to seek a consensual outcome of
reorganization of the party, to give her a new vigor and impetus,
especially in these days when the Armenian people and the homeland
are facing crucial issues.

In a separate address, Hagop Avedikian reported on the party’s
activities in Armenia and projected the challenges it faces in the
necessity to prepare for participating in the 2012 parliamentary
elections on a background of total inactivity of the ADL during the
last three state elections.

After four consecutive sessions, consultations and discussions spread
over two days, by a majority decision the assembly adopted a resolution
to establish the ADL World Council, which would comprise all levels
of districts, chapters, and individual party members in Armenia and
in the Diaspora. The Council will have an Executive Committee, which
will be charged with the preparation of a set of bylaws, purposes
and span of activities. It was also decided that the headquarters
of the party will be in Yerevan, considering the proximity of state
structures for immediate relations and the availability of specialists
in corresponding activities, as well as financial matters. After all,
ADL had originally aspired to be established in the homeland and to
become a party centered in Armenia.

It was decided:

1 – The current assembly to be considered the founding assembly of
the ADL World Council,

2 – To form the Executive Committee, which is the ruling body of
the ADL World Council, comprised of six members from the Diaspora
and five members from Armenia, who are: Armen Manuelian (Yerevan),
Papken Megerian (Philadelphia), Varoujan Sirapian (Paris), Nar
Khatchaturian (Beirut), Hagop Avedikian (Yerevan), Edmond Azadian
(Detroit), Hagop Vartivarian (New York), Vartan Nazirian (Los Angeles),
Souren Sarkissyan (Yerevan), Kayane Mouradyan (Yerevan), Siregan
Kevorkyan(Yerevan). The officers (Divan) of the Executive Committee
were also elected as follows: Chairman Hagop Avedikian; Vice Chairman
Edmond Azadian; Secretary Kayane Mouradyan; Treasurer Papken Megerian;
Press Director Hagop Vartivarian. By acclamation Dr. Nubar Berberian
(Boston) was elected emeritus president,

3 – To charge the Executive Committee to prepare within the next six
months the Bylaws of ADL World Council and an annual budget,

4 – To set up the headquarters of ADL World Council in Yerevan, and
to consider existing offices in Boston and Montreal as branch-offices,

5 – To appeal to all ADL districts, chapters, individual party members
and affiliates to join the World Council,

6 – To set up a website that will be maintained by the party’s
headquarters in Yerevan,

7 – A year later, in October 2010, to call for an assembly to discuss
and to approve the new Bylaws, to discuss the activities of the
current year and to plan activities that will involve the youth.

We hereby call upon all members of the Armenian Democratic Liberal
Party and affiliates to enroll in the ranks of the ADL World Council
so that the party, the affiliated and concordant circles will become
a reformed power in Armenia and in the Diaspora, to equilibrate the
Armenian life in the world, and to modernize and to perfect the ways
and means of facing the modern-day challenges of our people.

All party members can apply through the following e-mail to become
part of ADL World Council: [email protected], [email protected]

To all party and national organizations: the official addresses of

GLENDALE-Historian Ara Papian and Armenian National Committee of
America chairman Ken Hachikian will be the featured keynote speakers
at the ARF Day Celebration scheduled to take place on Sunday, December
6 at the Glendale High School Auditorium.

Papian, who is the director of the "Modus Vivendi" Center in Armenia,
has been at the forefront of providing legal analyses documenting the
inherent dangers of the Armenia-Turkey protocols. In a recent open
letter to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Papian outlined
the provisions of the Sevres Treaty and the subsequent Wilsonian
boundaries as basis for the illegality of the protocols.

As ANCA Chairman, Hachikian has led the organization in the fight for
the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Congress and has guided
the Armenian-American grassroots movement in the last decade.

Hachikian has been an outspoken opponent of the protocols.

Under the banner of "United Armenia with All Armenians," this year’s
annual ARF celebration will mark the party’s 119th anniversary and
will feature cultural performances and other presentations.

The event, which is open to the public and free, will take place at

ARMENIANS BRACE FOR ERDOGAN’S U.S. VISIT

United Press International UPI
Dec 1 2009

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) — A U.S.-based Armenian advocacy group has
ramped up efforts to encourage Washington to recognize the Armenian
genocide ahead of a visit by the Turkish premier.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to meet with
U.S. President Barack Obama on Dec. 7.

The Armenian National Committee of America stepped up its lobbying
efforts ahead of the visit, calling on its supporters to contact
their Washington representatives to encourage Obama to make true on
his campaign pledge to recognize the Armenian genocide.

During World War I, members of the Armenian community were forced on
a supposed death march to Syria and Iraq by the Ottoman regime.

Turkey’s English-language daily newspaper Hurriyet describes the
group as "the largest and most radical" pro-Armenian group in the
United States.

The ANCA, for its part, points to repeated accounts of slander by
Turkish lobbyists, calling on its supporters to call them out on
allegations of bias.

The Armenian diaspora in the United States has been urging the U.S.

government to formally recognize the deaths of more than a million
Armenians as genocide.

Two measures on the Armenian genocide are before U.S. lawmakers
currently.

where all resolutions would be unanimously adopted, 1996-98 Armenia’s
foreign minister, Alexander Arzumanyan noted.

As Alexander Arzumanyan stated at a news conference in Yerevan,
presidential speech at RPA congress had nothing in common with
Armenia’s realities.

Commenting on the establishment of RA authorities-opposition dialogue,
the ex-Foreign Minister characterized it as a necessary condition for
Armenia’s development and meeting external challenges. "Starting a
dialogue with a political team, holding pro-opposition politicians
under arrest is immoral. ANC will start a dialogue only after all
political prisoners are set free," he stressed.

NAGORNO-KARABAKH — HEART OF ARMENIA: EURONEWS

Armenia

Nestled in the raged fertile mountains of the Southern Caucasus the
disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh is once again in the headlines,"
Michael Reichmann, Euronews TV company reporter says, underlining
that the name itself means maintenance of black garden. Armenians who
make up 95% of the population in NKR call their homeland "the strong
forest". The journalist points out that for many Karabakh Armenians
"religious faith remained deeply important part of their lives". There
are hundreds of traditional Armenian churches and monasteries in NKR.

The reporter quotes Armenian studies professor Bernard Coulie, as
saying "Karabakh is a fascinating region which has very much the same
culture as Armenia. We are in a real Armenian region with a Christian
background which is very important. We are in the heart of Armenia
but not in a political sense. That is also very interesting."

Reichmann informs that Nagorno-Karabakh declared independence in
1991 after collapse of Soviet Union. It resulted in war between
Armenia and Azerbaijan. In 1994 the conflict finally ended after the
Russians broke the ceasefire. However, the territory is not still
internationally recognized. NKR President Bako Sahakyan states that
"it is no secret that Azerbaijan chose to militarize. We’ve stated
many times that we would like to avoid any military conflicts.

However, that does not mean we are not ready to defend ourselves."

Armenia took control of the region but no one lives here any more. All
is left are empty and mostly destroyed houses. The war cost 17.000
Armenians and 25.000 Azeris. In solidarity with Azerbaijan Turkey
closed its border to Armenia. Nearly a million people were also
displaced by the war.

Since the 1994 ceasefire, the region is fallen in so-called frozen
conflict despite that both Azerbaijani and Armenian armies are on high
alert. One of Armenian soldiers says, "I want peace for my country,
that’s why we are here. I do not want this situation to carry on. I
would like to be able to live in peace. However it’s our duty to
stay here."

Many Armenians living inside Azerbaijan have also moved to the region.

They were forced to flee after large-scale anti-Armenian riots in Azeri
capital, Baku in 1998. Reichmann quotes one of refugees — Michael
Sargsyan, "I am very happy to be in my homeland. The good thing about
our tragedy is that we are here now. That’s very good. I believe in
God. I strongly believe in him. That has helped me and my family."

The tension is stirred in the region. There are hopes that the
hostility might be eased. Armenian and Turkish Presidents attended the
qualifying matches of both countries’ national football teams in the
frames of World Cup 2010. Both states signed historical documents on
the establishment of bilateral relations. Equally significant was the
meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents in the end of November
in the course of which both Presidents expressed readiness to settle
the conflict peacefully.

As to the ratification of the Protocols, RA President Serzh Sargsyan
remains positive, "Armenians and Turks should be able to ratify the
Protocols, because both our parties have the majority in our respective
parliaments. We must use our political will, otherwise what was the
point of the signing the protocols. We are ready to ratify and we
expect Turkey to do the same."

On The Manifestation Of Turkish State Policy In Regard To The Armeni

ON THE MANIFESTATION OF TURKISH STATE POLICY IN REGARD TO THE ARMENIANS

"Noravank" Foundation
30 November 2009

The theme of the splinters of the Armeniancy (both Islamized and
Christian) which still exist in Turkey is one of the insufficiently
explored and studied issues. The researches devoted to their
current conditions are rather rare. The problem of assimilated or
crypto-Armenians living in various regions of Turkey remained unknown
not only in the scholastic circles but also among the Armenians of
Istanbul and in consequence of various processes going on in present
the Armenians of Istanbul discover a lot of interesting. One of the
factors boosting that process is that there are many Armenian children
from provinces who are on different levels of assimilation coming to
study in the Armenian schools of Istanbul. According to the competent
people the Armenians from provinces are zealous for the issues
that their children should study in the Armenian schools. They face
different obstacles which, anyway, do not affect seriously their will.

The interest in their mother tongue and thus in their roots is
observable phenomenon especially in the context of the current
educational situation in the Istanbul community when the number of
pupils attending Armenian schools is decreasing.

Lately there has been "9th Mndzurian Festival" arranged in Dersim in
which song and dance companies participated. An Armenian from Istanbul
Bagrat Esdugian ("Akos" contributor) while speaking about the presence
of the Armenians in Dersim brings remarkable facts which come to prove
that there are still various undiscovered layers of the converted
and crypto-Armenians problem and, besides, the Amreniancy in Turkey
faces the problems of self-awareness: "I already felt like family to
the people of the city. I knew from what I had read before that there
were many people among them who were of the Armenian origin. But I
have never thought that there were so many of them. It was surprising
that nobody tried to hide their identity. The people were adapted to
present the integrity of Alevi religion, Kurdish political movements
and Armenian identity. For us, the Armenians in Istanbul, it was
difficult to understand but it was rather natural for the people of
Dersim. The "splinters" of the Armeniancy can be met on the territory
of Anatolia. And in Dersim one can meet Armenians. They are neither
crypto, nor apostate; they are just special, unusual" 1.

This ongoing process reveals more and more new pages in the history
of the Armenians who survived the Genocide and the gathering and
systematization of those pages will allow forming the integral
impression about the problems. But all these ask time, skills and
come to prove the groundlessness of the standpoint of those people
who try to make untimely or groundless analyses and conclusions,
which are at the best based on one or two outdated facts.

One of such close or dark pages is the policy of forced Islamization
of the Armenians who in the republican Turkey some episodes of which
have leaked to the pages of the press but we would like to specify
the geography and present some elements of the Islamization policy
carried out in regard to the Armenians in the half of the last century
in Sasun. Let us mention that we wrote down the facts regarding this
personally during the field researches and conversations with people.

But before turning to the definite problem it is necessary to give
general outlines of the repressions and violence in regard to the
Armenians in the Republic of Turkey.

It is known that during the first decades of the existence of the
Republic of Turkey there was a number of Armenians living in the
eastern parts of the country and in Istanbul (according to different
sources 250-300 thousand). The facts show that particularly in
the eastern regions, i.e. on the territory of historical Armenia,
the government of the republican Turkey carried out the policy in
regard to the Armenians which did not differ much from the policy
implemented by the Ottoman Empire and contained the manifestations
of the deportation, exile, forced Islamization. E.g. in summer 1929
and following months about 30 thousand were exiled from Kharberd,
Diyarbekir and Mardin provinces2. The US ambassador to Turkey Robert
Skinner in his March 3, 1934 report to the US State Secretary, which
was classified top secret, brought the facts about the deportations
of the Armenians from the eastern regions of Turkey. Thus, it was
mentioned that since the beginning of 1934 the Turkish government
had moved the Armenians from "Anatolia" to Istanbul. Those Armenians
were compelled to sell their property on a very low price which was
regarded by the ambassador as equal to leaving their property, and
move to Istanbul where Armenian patriarchate and different beneficial
organizations tried to help them. One of the main reasons for the
deportations of the Armenians is supposed to be the fact that they
were successful entrepreneurs, they had good job and they could earn
much which caused Turk’s envy. But the main and important reason was
considered to be the purpose of the Turks to Turkishize "Anatolia"
fully3. The report, prepared by the 9th bureau (which was responsible
for the issues regarding minorities) of the ruling in the 1940s
Democratic-Republican Party, where the attitude of the state machine
towards non-Muslims can be vividly seen, cast light upon all that4.

The following views concerning Armenians were found in that report:
"Armenians: In Anatolia they have turned into a depleted small in
number community and through some political ways they try to increase
their number. We firstly need to "clean" Anatolia of them and move
them to Istanbul thus we will also be able to keep under the control
the population upsurge". In the report we can find grounding for
the deportation of the Armenians to Istanbul based on the historical
experience: "Thereby the growth of their population will be suppressed
and later, if necessary, they all together will be before the eyes
of the state".

Thus, we can see that the state policy tended to resettle the Armenians
from the territory of the historical Armenia as the Armenians who lived
there constituted potential menace to the Turkish state and resettling
them to Istanbul they had neutralized that threat. This policy worked
in a complex and the forced Islamization of the Armenians living in
the territory of historical Armenia was one of component parts of
that policy but in this direction various means were used.

While speaking about the survived Armenians from Sasun it should be
mentioned that there is poor information about them in different
sources which proves that there are Armenians in Sasun who were
forcedly Islamized during the Genocide and part of those Armenians is
crypto-Christians. But there is also information that there are still
Armenians in Sasun who do not hide that they are Christians and the
ways of their survival differed. It is known that the Armenian Genocide
was accompanied with the destruction of the Armenian historical
monuments (Cultural Genocide) and after 1915 the presence of the
Armenian priests in the tumbledown or demolished Armenian churches
was impossible. Under such conditions the Christian Armenians in
Sasun faced serious difficulties in the issue of churching. But even
under the absence of the Armenian priests the Sasunians managed to
retain a number of Christian elements through the centuries and pass
it to the generations. The most vivid example is the pilgrimage to
the ruins of St. Mother of God monastery at the mount of Maruta,
lighting candles, sacrificial offering and etc. Of coarse, it would
be naïve to suppose that in the years following the Genocide the
absence of the priests in Sasun was because of the "indifference"
on behalf of the Armenian patriarchate. It is clear that serious
state control did not allow the visit of the Armenian priests to the
territories of the historical Armenia and some frequent secret visits
were followed by the pressure and repressions.

Back in 1950s under such conditions the wave of Islamization was
initiated in regard to the Christian Sasunians. At the end of 1950s
offices of state appealed to the Armenians in the form of demand to
convert to Islam but a part of the Sasunians opposed to that decision
and refused forced conversion to Islam. But they continued to exert the
pressure involving power structures. As a consequence some Christian
Armenians, though in some cases outwardly, yielded and converted
to Islam. Alongside with the forcible methods Turkish state also
used other ways and the Armenian villages which were left without
priests were visited by the Muslim preachers, sheikhs who tried to
convince the local population to convert to Islam willfully in order
to be able to carry out ceremonies, such as marriages, christening,
funerals and etc. This method also had his effect because Armenians,
having no priest, were forced to do it. It is remarkable that according
to our interlocutors the conversion of their relatives was not taken
unambiguously by the surrounding Armenians who openly criticized the
apostates and sometimes it promoted the stopping of the Islamization
or its reductions. According to some sources the cases of Islamization
of the Armenians had also been recorded later in 1980s.

The continuing repressions made the part of the survived Sasunians
move to Istanbul, part of them to convert to the religion of the
Turkish state and the other became crypto-Christians.

All this comes to prove that the Republic of Turkey continued the
policy of forced Islamization adopted by the Ottoman Empire which in
the end had its results and today in the territory of the historical
Armenia, apart from some separate islands, there are almost no
Armenians who do not hide that they are Christians.
