TODAY IS NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
Today, Thursday, May 6th, is National Day of Prayer by presidential
proclamation.
Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental
Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation,
the call to prayer has continued through U.S. history, including
President Abraham Lincolns proclamation of a day of humiliation,
fasting, and prayer in 1863. In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress,
signed by President Harry Truman, declared an annual, national day of
prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Ronald
Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every
May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all
Americans to pray on this day.
On this day, let us give thanks for the many blessings God has
bestowed upon our Nation. Let us rejoice for the blessing of freedom
both to believe and to live our beliefs, and for the many other
freedoms and opportunities that bring us together as one Nation. Let
us ask for wisdom, compassion, and discernment of justice as we
address the great challenges of our time.
We are blessed to live in a Nation that counts freedom of
conscience and free exercise of religion among its most fundamental
principles, thereby ensuring that all people of goodwill may hold and
practice their beliefs according to the dictates of their
consciences. Prayer has been a sustaining way for many Americans of
diverse faiths to express their most cherished beliefs, and thus we
have long deemed it fitting and proper to publicly recognize the
importance of prayer on this day across the Nation.

Prayer 2010

ST. STEPHENS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL USES
LITERARY APPROACH TO GENOCIDE STUDIES
St. Stephens Armenian Elementary School, Watertown, Massachusetts, is
using age-appropriate literature to supplement the teaching of the
Armenian Genocide. In grade four, Arams Choice by Marsha Forchuk
Skrypuch, has been added to the curriculum. Arams Choice and its
sequel, Call Me Aram, relate the story of the Georgetown Boys, a group
of Armenian orphans who were brought to Georgetown, Ontario, Canada in
1923.
In grade 5 the students read the highly-acclaimed The Road
from Home: The Story of an Armenian Girl, by David Kherdian, told from
his mothers perspective about her childhood in an Armenian community
in Turkey, and her eventual arrival in America.
Photo: St. Stephens Elementary School fourth grade students with
author Marsha Skrypuch and Houry Boyamian, principal, and teachers
Julia Kramer and Kacie Carli.
In April, the fourth and fifth graders went to Cranston, Rhode
Island, to see the theatrical performance of The Georgetown Boys,
directed by Dr. Herand Markarian.

BIBLE READING
Beginning April 12 and continuing through to Pentecost (May 23), in
addition to other readings portions of the four Gospels are read each
day: Luke is read in the morning; John is read at mid-day; Matthew is
read at the beginning of the evening hour; and Mark is read at the end
of the evening hour.
Bible readings for today, Thursday, May 6 are: Luke 13:10-21;
Acts 19:1-20; 1 John 2:24-25; John 8:21-30; Matthew 15:1-20; Mark
7:31-37.
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and
said, Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For
they do not wash their hands before they eat. He answered them, And
why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your
tradition? For God said, Honor your father and your mother, and
Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die. But you say
that whoever tells father or mother, Whatever support you might have
had from me is given to God, then that person need not honor the
father. So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of
God. You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:
This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from
me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.
Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and
understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person,
but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. Then the disciples
approached and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees took
offense when they heard what you said? He answered, Every plant that
my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone;
they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides
another, both will fall into a pit. But Peter said to him, Explain
this parable to us. Then he said, Are you still without understanding?
Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach,
and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds
from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come
evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness,
slander. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed
hands does not de!
file.

FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
Next Thursday, May 13, is the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus
Christ (Hambardzoum), which is celebrated forty days after the
Resurrection. The universal church has celebrated the Ascension since
the fourth century. According to Biblical scripture the Ascension took
place in the village of Bethany, on the Mount of Olives, in the
presence of our Lords disciples. After giving them commandments and
blessings, the Lord was received up into heaven and sat on the right
hand of God, (Mark 16:19), and a cloud received him out of their
sight, (Acts 1:9). In the early centuries of Christianity, Hambardzoum
was one of the most popular feast days for the faithful and was
celebrated with merriment and festivities. There are many Armenian
traditions associated with this dominical feast. Perhaps the best
known one being fortune-telling (vijakakhakh).
Today the first and only Son of the Father rises to heaven in
the form of man. Melodic eulogies sound today from the multitude of
heavenly souls. (Breviary of the Armenian Church)

SUNDAY IS MOTHERS DAY
This Sunday, May 9, is Mothers Day. Dont forget to call your mother. I
wish I could call mine.

A RCHBISHOP KHAJAG BARSAMIAN RE-ELECTED TO A SIXTH TERM AS PRIMATE OF THE
EASTERN DIOCESE AT 108TH DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY IN CHICAGO

On Friday, April 30, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian was re-elected to a sixth
term as Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern)
at the 108th Diocesan Assembly in Chicago, Ill.

Upon announcement of his re-election, clergy led a procession into the main
meeting room, where parish delegates stood to welcome the Primate, as clergy
approached Archbishop Barsamian one by one to offer their congratulations
and to receive his blessing.

In his remarks to the Assembly delegates, Archbishop Barsamian outlined five
areas where he would continue to concentrate attention as Primate. These
include a more vigorous promotion of clerical vocations in the Diocese; the
preparation and advancement of young adults into leadership positions within
the church; and firmer management and development of the Diocese’s finances.

The Primate also reflected on his nearly 40 years of service as a priest in
the Armenian Church, and said he is grateful to God for giving him the
opportunity to serve the church for almost four decades.

Archbishop Barsamian then expressed his gratitude to the delegates, saying,
"Today, once again, I thank you for your trust, and for asking me to
continue my service in this Diocese as your Primate."

This year’s election marked the 20th anniversary of Archbishop Barsamian’s
original election at the 1990 Diocesan Assembly in Worcester, Mass. Prior to
that, he served the Eastern Diocese as the grand sacristan of New York’s St.
Vartan Armenian Cathedral and as Vicar General.

"It’s an honor to serve in this Diocese-the Diocese that began more than 110
years ago when our forefathers brought with them to this new world the
ancient apostolic Armenian Christian tradition." Archbishop Barsamian said.
"I renew my commitment to continue, with each one of you clergy and lay
leaders, to make the Armenian Church stronger in America."

Archbishop Barsamian said it is his goal to continue preparing young men to
serve as priests in the Armenian Church to ensure that in the near future
all Diocesan parishes are served by full-time pastors.

Cultivating young lay leaders is likewise important, the Primate said,
encouraging delegates to "continue supporting young adults so that they are
invited to take leadership roles in our parishes and in our Diocese."

Turning to education, Archbishop Barsamian said the Diocese would focus on
developing more programs aimed at helping children and adults learn about
their Christian heritage and the Armenian Church. He stressed the need to
use emerging media tools and modern technologies to bolster outreach
initiatives.

The Primate also said he would continue working with members of the Diocesan
Council to improve the management of the Diocesan Center to better serve the
parishes and faithful of the Eastern Diocese, and to ensure the financial
stability of the Diocese.

Lastly, Archbishop Barsamian spoke about the Armenian Church on a global
level, and mentioned ways the Eastern Diocese might participate in efforts
to strengthen the church. He affirmed his commitment to continue pursuing
the restoration of administrative unity in the Armenian Church in a
brotherly fashion. He added that such unity "is beneficial for the entire
Armenian Church, Armenian people, and the Armenian nation."

Other candidates in this year’s election were the Very Rev. Fr. Nareg
Berberian, pastor of St. David Church of Boca Raton, Fla., and the Very Rev.
Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, pastor of St. Stepanos Church of Elberon, N.J.

Today in the National museum – institute of architecture in Yerevan
was held the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition of philologist
Katy Gundakchyan titled "Mountain story of Armenia".

On the exhibition were presented more than 80 photos of the author
which have been made in the West Armenia, during different years.

Q. Gudakchyan mentioned that many years have passed till she has
managed to have a photo camera and has started to make photos, which
has coincided with her leaving for West Armenia. For the first time
she tried to make a photo on the slope of the Mount Ararat.

The author of the photos mentioned that the photos presenting the
West Armenia have been shown in military bases, at schools, YSU.

"The life of a human being is too short, and there are too many things
to take by camera. On the way of going to Polis there are always many
interesting photos taken. The West Armenia is an endless subject. I
wonder how we could give those lands to Turks. We have done what we
had not to do now its time for keeping whatever we have at least,"
stressed Katy Gundakchyan.

On the pictures one can see Ararat from the opposite side, Van, Kars,
churches that are built on high mountains, bridges which are ruined,
waterfalls, rivers.

the South Caucasus countries will be presented for formal adoption
at the Foreign Affairs Council on May 10", European Commissioner for
Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule said when speaking
at the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), European Parliament,
after his visit to the South Caucasus and Ukraine.

"This will pave the way for the EU side to prepare for the launch

association between each of the partners in the South Caucasus and
the EU, building on common values and shared principles", Fule said.

According to him, during his visit to the region, Armenia, Azerbaijan
and Georgia gave to understand that they strive for closer and more
extended cooperation with Europe. "My message to the leaders in
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia has been and will always be that the
responsibility for the internal reform processes and the strengthening

Profile in Design: Yervant Zorian
Indefatigable promoter of SoC design elegance

Nicolas Mokhoff
EE Times (05/01/2010 12:01 PM EDT)

SAN JOSE, Calif. ‘ It’s not often you run into a renaissance man in
the electronics industry. But when you strike up a conversation with
one of them you instantly know you are in the presence of passionate
people who care more about the whole industry than the sum of their
personal career.
Three "captains of industry" come to mind instantly: Aart de Geus,
founder, CEO and chairman of Synopsys; Pasquale Pistorio, honorary
chairman of STMicroelectronics; and Walden Rhines, Chairman and CEO of
Mentor Graphics .

These men have excelled with their personal qualities in their
individual milieus, while Yervant Zorian, vice president and chief
scientist at Virage Logic, has piloted almost single-handedly the
quest for making intellectual property design blocks smart, more
sophisticated, easier to use in system designs while always adding
value to their cost.

Zorian is a one-man show of getting the job done: whether piloting
another test conference workshop or architecting management tracks at
the upcoming 2010 Design Automation Conference, Zorian is
indefatigably plowing ahead daily to bring the message across to
designers that it matters not what they design but how.

He joining Virage Logic in 2000 having prior served as a Distinguished
Member of the Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies, Bell
Laboratories and Chief Technical Advisor to LogicVision.

As the Vice President of the IEEE Computer Society for Conferences and
Tutorials and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of IEEE Design & Test of
Computers, Zorian constantly pushes the envelope to bring about a
discipline of marrying test and design. He founded and the IEEE 1500
standardization working group for embedded core test.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the recipient of the 2005 IEEE Industrial
Pioneer Award . He graduatied with an MSc degree from the University
of Southern California and received a Ph.D. from McGill University. He
has also received an honorary doctor of the National Academy of
Sciences of Armenia.

Of Armenian descent, Zorian is actively engaged in the Armenian
Diaspora and travels often to Virage Logic’s design center in Yerevan,
capital of Armenia, where he oversees the research and development of
some 120 design engineers who contribute heavily to the company’s
commercial products such as the Star Memory System, an open memory
interface that enables gives SoC designers testing solutions within
embedded memories.

His work outside Virage includes being a member of the general
directorate of the Armenian General Benevolent Union, which promotes
the Armenian heritage.

Zorian sat down this week with EE Times at the Embedded Systems
Conference to discuss the industry, Virage Logic and its Armenian
connection, as well as offer his thoughts about dissemination of
technical information to a global chip design community.

ANKARA: Turkey expects Knesset Genocide discussion proposal "to fail

Anadolu Agency, Turkey

Turkey expects proposal to discuss "Armenian allegations" in Knesset "to fail"

Ankara, 29 April: Turkish Foreign Ministry said the Israeli Parliament
Knesset’s decision to accept a proposal to discuss the Armenian
allegations regarding the incidents of 1915, was an attempt expected
to fail like previous ones.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Burak Ozugurgun, commented at a weekly
press conference on Knesset’s decision to accept the leader of Meretz
Party Haim Oron’s proposal to debate the Armenian allegations
regarding the 1915 incidents as genocide.

Ozugurgun who pointed out that similar proposals were discussed at
Knesset in the past said, "We expect such attempts to fail like the
examples in the past."

"Not just the Israeli Parliament. But Turkey’s views on judgement of
history by parliamentarians, in general, is well known. It is better
to leave interpretation of history to historians," said Ozugurgun.

Ozugurgun who said that Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun
Sinirlioglu would shortly travel to Israel for regular consultations,
adding that the Middle East peace process as well as the course of
Turkish-Israeli relations would be discussed.
