Publication claims Iran’s lands belong to Armenia

“Metsamor” newspaper run by Armenians has included Iran’s territories
into the map of “Great Armenia” published on its first page. The
Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, in an interview with local ANS
television, stated that Armenians are distorting history. He said
that such statements are laughable and pose no threat to Iran’s
territorial integrity.

The mentioned map is provided in every issue of this newspaper
published in 5,000 copies. The publication’s editor-in-chief is a
well-known academician in Armenia.

China eyes market economy status

BEIJING: When Venezuela recognised China’s status as a market economy last
week, Beijing secured yet another pawn in a low-key battle it is waging
against the US and Europe, analysts said. It is a battle for the two
dominant powers in world trade to also grant China the much-coveted market
economy label, and the stakes can be counted in billions of dollars.
“They’re signing up more and more countries to acknowledge their market
economy status to increase their bargaining power in the World Trade
Organisation,” said Andreas Lauffs, a trade lawyer at Baker McKenzie. With
Venezuela’s nod, which comes on the heels of a similar move by Pakistan
earlier in December, a total of 27 countries have recognised China’s full
market economy status, ranging from Brazil and Russia to Armenia. Market
economy status is crucial because it helps Chinese companies which run the
risk of anti-dumping charges.

The US Department of State will fully repeal the Section 907 it
passed on Azerbaijan after the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper
Garabagh is settled, the US ambassador to Azerbaijan Reno Harnish told
journalists last Wednesday. Harnish said that every year President
Bush proposes to the US Congress to suspend execution of Section 907
to the Freedom Support Act,

which prohibits direct US assistance to the Azerbaijani government.
The ambassador also said that his country welcomes the ongoing peace
talks. “The US is very pleased that meetings between the Azerbaijani
and Armenian foreign ministers continue and that further steps will
be taken in this area in January.”

Harnish voiced a hope that such meetings will lead to a fair and
long-term resolution of the conflict through negotiations.

Denver: Armenian kin face another setback

Armenian kin face another setback

The government has appealed a ruling that made the eldest daughter
a legal U.S. resident.

Immigration officials have thrown up one more roadblock for an Armenian
family that has been fighting for six years to become legal residents
of the United States.

An attorney for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division
of the Department of Homeland Security has appealed the recent
immigration-court ruling that granted legal status for the eldest
daughter of the Sargsyan family, Nvart Idinyan.

The appeal claims that Idinyan engaged in marriage fraud when she
wed American Vaughn Huckfeldt in her homeland in 1995.

The Sargsyans deny that and blame Huckfeldt for causing all their
immigration woes. They allege he was engaged in human trafficking and
falsely promised to secure visas for Armenians after taking thousands
of dollars from them.

He brought the Sargsyan family to the United States in 1999 after,
they say, Armenians who had been duped out of money for visas by
Huckfeldt were threatening and harassing the Sargsyans.

“My personal belief is that Vaughn Huckfeldt conned them (immigration
officials) as much as he conned Nvart. He is a master con man,”
said Jeff Joseph, the Denver immigration lawyer who is handling the
Sargsyans’ case.

Huckfeldt is reportedly living in Germany and could not be reached for
comment. He faces a warrant for his arrest in the United States, where
he has not paid child support for the son he and Idinyan had in 1996.

Joseph said Huckfeldt alleged after Idinyan filed for divorce in
1999 that she had married him for a green card. Those allegations
were dismissed following a hearing before an immigration judge in
Denver in 2000.

The appeal affects the immigration cases of other members of the
Sargsyan family.

Idinyan remarried, and her current husband has adopted her two minor
brothers. If Idinyan’s legal status had not been challenged, it would
have given her brothers, Gevorg, 20, and Hayk, 17, more legal standing.

Gevorg, Hayk, their father, Ruben, and sister, Meri, recently spent
five weeks in an immigration detention center awaiting deportation.
The matriarch of the family, Susan Idinyan, was not jailed because
her case is being heard separately.

Luisa Aquino, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
said her agency has the right to appeal any decision made by an
immigration judge.

ARMENIA STRENGTHENING COOPERATION WITH NATO

Armenian servicemen plan to participate in eight joint exercises with
NATO in 2005. Lieutenant-General Arthur Agabekyan, Armenian Deputy
Defense Minister, stated at a meeting of the working group of NATO’s
military committee in Yerevan: “This year Armenia has participated
in five joint exercises with NATO; next year we will take part in
eight exercises.”

According to him, the republic’s plan of individual partnership
with NATO will be announced next year. Arthur Agabekyan stated:
“Armenia is guided by long-term plans for its security.”

Representatives of over 30 countries, which are members and partners
of the alliance, attended the meeting of NATO’s military committee.
It is intended to hold a similar meeting in Tbilisi. Originally, it was
intended to hold the meeting in the capitals of three South-Caucasian
states. However, Azerbaijan refused to let Armenian servicemen attend
the meeting, which is why the meeting in Baku was cancelled.

An enthusiastic Artur Anushavanyan, folk singer from Yerevan, and
poet Zepure Arman were among the young people who performed at the
First Annual Banquet of the Hovanness Badalian Music Fund held in
Watertown, Massachusetts. The December 4, 2004 event brought together
close to 250 supporters of the Fund, young and young at heart,
in a festive atmosphere. Armine Mirzabegian MD, speaking on behalf
of the organizing committee, welcomed everyone and invited composer
and conductor Konstantin Petrosian of Providence, RI, to speak about
the goals and mission of the Fund. Following Maestro Petrosianâ~@~Ys
remarks a short biography of Badalian, narrated by the singer himself,
was presented on video courtesy of Argisti Chaparian and his father
Vartan. His Excellency Dr Arman Kirakossian, Armeniaâ~@~Ys ambassador
to the US, who together with his wife and young son was among invited
guests, spoke about the importance of such an undertaking and urged
everyone to continue their support of the Fund. He emphasized that by
helping the children in their music education the Fund will also help
strengthen our cultural identity. Hovanness Badalianâ~@~Ys brother
Garnik, who lives in Watertown, on behalf of his family throughout
the world, thanked the guests, the organizing committee and specially
the young performers for their involvement in the project.

The cultural program, hosted by Narini Badalian, Garnikâ~@~Ys grand
daughter, ignited with Ani Arakelian reciting a poem in Armenian
followed by the performance of soprano Noune Karapetian who was
accompanied by Nune Hakobyan, piano and Eddy Gregorian, dhol. Poet
Zepure Arman read her work specially written for this event and
prefaced it by saying: Badalian was a man who carried his sense of
identity with such absoluteness that his identity molded him rather
than the contrary. Gegham Margarian performed his own work on the
keyboard followed by Artur Anushavanyan who delighted the audience
with his folk songs.

The final speaker of the evening was Ara Sarkissian, a young composer
and graduate of Boston Conservatory of Music, who spoke of his recent
journey in Armenia and stressed the critical shortage of quality
instruments which children need in order to continue their music
education in the Republic. Turning his attention to the New England
community, Mr Sarkissian, praised members of Bostonâ~@~Ys Arev Armenian
Folk Ensemble who have dedicated a great deal of energy in learning
and performing Armenian folk songs. In particular he mentioned Martin
Haroutunian, founder and director of the group, who has been a teacher
and a mentor for many young people interested in learning traditional
Armenian music. He concluded his remarks by inviting Maestro Petrosian
to present the first ever Hovanness Badalian Appreciation Award Plaque
to the members of Arev. Martin Haroutunian accepted the plaque on
behalf of the group and invited its members whose current roster
includes Ani Zargarian, vocalist; Tamar Melkonian, vocalist; John
Kozelian, oud; Vazken Kroshian, M.D., guitar; Marcos Shahbazyan,
dhol; David Gevorkian, duduk and Martin Haroutunian, duduk to the
stage for a grand finale performance of the evening.

HBMF provides merit-based scholarships to children enrolled in Armenian
music education programs, worldwide. The Fund also provides assistance
to individuals and organizations that create material and training
programs for children. Beloved singer Hovanness Badalian played a
significant role in educating Armenian children and young adults. He
spread the spirit of the Armenian culture around the world through
his songs, helping bond the Diaspora and Armenia. His dream was
… to hear the Armenian song resonate from every home wherever an
Armenian lives. The Fund was established in early 2004 to celebrate
the singerâ~@~Ys life and legacy.

Note to the editor:

First Annual Banquet of Hovanness Badalian Music Fund brought
together many talented young people among them poet Zepur Arman
who made the following remarks and read her poem written specially
for this event. You may wish to publish this as well. Thank You.
Tatoul Badalian

I am overwhelmed with honor that I have a chance to speak of such a
great man to you today. Hovanness Badalian was a man who carried his
sense of identity with such absoluteness that his identity molded
him rather than the contrary. Thus his great art beseeched him and
his country listened. To have such an infectious passion can only
inspire us.

His voice led me to these images.
Adagio from the east beckons
Pulled toward the sky surrounding me
I hang on to each branch offered
my eyes drift north to the palisades of a colossal past
rich as the land we’re grounded on,
sound rumbles throughout the fields
legends live within our tears
the sable obsidian is dripping within my thoughts
with a voice of hundreds before me…..
I anchor my lineage on an abstraction… intangible to the touch
yet an impetuous pulse finds every branch.
Holding on
I am never alone,
I am never forgotten

Baucher: We Recognized the Terrible Tragedy that Happened with the
Armenian Community in Anatolia

Jose Manuel Barroso, chairman of EU commission, emphasized that the
leaders of 25 EU member countries that gathered in Brussels will vote
for opening the negotiations with Turkey in the issue of its entry
to EU, Novosti agency informed.

“The European Union has opened its door to Turkey. No obstacle can
occur on this path at the last moment,” Barroso said, adding that
the issues related to the full membership, including the issue of the
Armenian genocide, will be discussed during the future negotiations.

If a group of EU member states is for fixing concrete deadlines for
opening the negotiations with Turkey, the rest are less optimistic. A
high-ranking German official said in the interview to France-Presse
that Berlin expects that Turkey is suggested to open full membership
negotiations at the congress and not an issue of “special cooperation.”

Joschka Fischer, German foreign minister, considered Turkeyâ~@~Ys
membership to EU a desired one. “We will not only solve the issue of
Turkeyâ~@~Ys membership but also the issue of its modernization,”
Fischer said, adding that Muslim Turkey, meeting the commitments
required for EU membership, can serve as a good example for other
countries of the Middle East.

According to Reuters, Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schussel is
the most known pessimist in the issue of Turkeyâ~@~Ys membership
to EU. Jacques Chirak, French President, announced on Wednesday,
Turkeyâ~@~Ys membership to EU would meet the interests of France
and Europe, on the other hand, he said that each of the 25 EU member
countries can put a veto on that decision.

According to Mediamax, in response to the question about the
Armenian Genocide, as well as the position of the USA towards the
dispute unfolded in the context of Turkeyâ~@~Ys membership to
EU, the official representative of the US State Department said:
“We recognized the terrible tragedy that happened to the Armenian
community of Anatolia during the last years of the Ottoman Empire.”

In reply to the question whether the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide should be a precondition for Turkeyâ~@~Ys entry to EU,
Richard Baucher said: “The State Secretary announced several times
during the last week that the Europeans should solve all these
issues. We believe that Turkey has covered a long path to keep in line
with the criteria required for the EU membership, and the Europeans
should take an independent decision.”

On December 16, TurkishMilietstated in its “USA Recognizes Armenian
Genocide” article that Colin Powel, US State Secretary, had a telephone
talk with Gul, Turkish foreign minister, and showed interest about
the latest developments around the EU membership negotiations.

Prime Minister Tony Blair is expected to offer to back Turkey’s EU
membership bid today after winning support from fellow European
leaders.

The Republic of Turkey is spread over 779,452 square kilometres and
has a population of around 68.1 million.

Turks account for 85% of the population, Kurds 12%, and 3% are other
Islamic peoples, Armenians and Jews.

Languages spoken are Arabic, Turkish, Armenian, Greek and Kurdish.
The predominant religion is Muslim (Sunni).

Major industries in the country include textiles, food processing,
tourism, motor vehicles, mining, lumber, petroleum and construction.

Trading partners are mainly the UK, United States, Germany, Italy,
France and Russia. A fifth of Turkish imports come from British firms
and half of Turkey’s trade is with the EU.

Ankara is the capital city. Located in the Central Anatolian steppe,
it has been the political heart of the country since 1920 while
Istanbul takes its place as the cultural centre.

Turkey’s “hero” is Ataturk (Mustafa Kemal), who made it his job to
recreate Turkish society following the country’s bitter victory in
the War of Independence (1920-22).

By the time of his death in 1938, a constitution had been adopted,
Islam was removed as the state religion and women obtained the right
to vote. There are many statues of him across the land.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises travellers there is still
a “high threat from terror in Turkey”.

In November last year, there were attacks against the British
Consulate-General and the headquarters of HSBC and bomb attacks on
two synagogues in Istanbul. Responsibility was claimed by the Turkish
militant group IBDA-C, jointly with al Qaida.

Turkey’s links with the EU were recognised in 1963 when it made an
Association Agreement. In October, the European Commission judged
Turkey meets the EU’s political criteria and is ready to negotiate
membership.

Over the last three years, Turkey has undergone some reforms,
including the abolition of the death penalty and improvements to the
rights of minority groups, in an attempt to bring the country closer
to Europe.
