Group sends aid to Armenia

Coalition of charities has sent $580 million in medicine, other
supplies since ’89.

GLENDALE ‘ An Armenian-American coalition wrapped up its 20th
anniversary this past year with its 154th charitable airlift to
Armenia via chartered jetliner that delivered $4.5 million worth of
medicine, medical supplies and humanitarian aid.

The United Armenian Fund is a coalition of charities that works to
send warm clothes, medical equipment and other items requested by
residents in Armenia.

`If it’s needed, we send it,’ said Harut Sassounian, president and
founder of the Glendale-based organization.

The coalition was born in response to a catastrophic earthquake that
leveled much of Armenia in December 1988, then under control of the
Soviet Union. Aid began trickling in chaotically, Sassounian said.

`I thought if at least several large Armenian organizations unite and
collaborate and coordinate their aid, we can do something a little
more organized,’ he said. `That’s how UAF was born.’

That United Armenian Fund can free charities from shipping costs is a
huge relief, said Sossi Poladian, chairwoman of the Armenian Relief
Society of Western USA.

`That way, we could be able to shift our focus on other humanitarian
projects,’ she said. `They do a fantastic job.’

Since 1989, the fund has delivered $580 million in humanitarian aid
aboard 154 airlifts. And for the past 10 or 15 years, it’s been with a
staff of three, one of whom is a part-time student.

`We’ve been doing this for 20 years; we have established ties with
major donors,’ Sassounian said. `It was a whole different story at the
beginning.’

The airlifts aren’t cheap, costing $200,000 per trip. But alternative
shipping methods to Armenia are unpredictable and difficult to pull
off, organizer said.

The landlocked country is also blockaded by two of its four neighbors,
Turkey and Azerbaijan. To the south, it shares a small, mountainous
border with Iran. Railroads and highways connect it to Georgia in the
north, but sometimes those connections are unreliable.

`Basically, the only viable way of getting supplies unhindered to
Armenia is by air; that’s why we started doing airlifts,’ Sassounian
said. `It’s so expensive, but we don’t have to deal with blockades or
other issues.’

The organization sends three or four airlifts a year; the next one is
scheduled for the end of February. Planes refuel in Germany, and
regularly pick up donated items from the Armenian community throughout
Europe.

Small charities cannot afford to ship to Armenia, Sassounian said.

`We’ll ship it for them,’ he said. `If you’re a small charity and want
to do it on your own, it’s a lot of red tape?.?.?.?old Soviet
countries have that. But when you’re onboard a UAF flight, you have
easy passage.’

United Armenian Fund is constantly shipping containers by sea to
Georgia, where they are taken by truck or train into Armenia. Doing so
costs $5,000 to $8,000. The fund has shipped 1,761 containers since
1989.

`If I’m sending antibiotics worth, say $100,000, and put on a plane
that cost me $200,000, if you go by price it doesn’t make sense,’
Sassounian said. `But if it saves so many lives, well, that’s the real
value of the shipment.’

Time-sensitive items go in the airlift, as does medicine that could be
contaminated by sea air or affected by stormy seas.

`If someone gives us a CAT Scan [machine], those things we put on the
plane because they are high value,’ Sassounian said.

The coalition relies almost entirely on donations. Charitable
organizations like AmeriCares, Catholic Medical Mission Board and
World Vision have vast warehouses across the U.S. that organizers can
pick and choose from.

`It’s not an easy thing, what we’re doing,’ Sassounian said.

Prince El Hassan Congratulates Christians in Jordan on the Occasion of
Christmas

Amman, Dec. 26 (Petra) — HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, on Saturday
congratulated Christians in Jordan on the occasion of Christmas.

During his meeting today at the Armenian Orthodox Church with heads of
churches and representatives of Christian denominations in the
Kingdom, HRH called for drawing hope through emphasizing common
religious and human ethics, morals and values; stressing the need to
have a common position towards religious freedom and the valuable
meanings which reflect the impact of religion on culture.

"Let’s talk about the enclosure of thought, love and generosity. Let’s
talk about communication in terms of knowledge and love for millions
of people" the prince said.

Prince El Hassan pointed out that this region of the world is invited,
in 2012, to participate in a very important dialogue under the General
Assembly of the United Nations on the global commons; hoping that
Arabs become more influential in the introduction of religion and
culture, and mutual influence between them, into the definition of the
Millennium Development Goals in its second phase which begins in 2015.

Prince El Hassan said that we are called upon today to think about the
future of life, not only in terms of survival; calling for a
faith-based approach which activates intellectual generosity and the
social role of various religious and intellectual institutions.

"We have to revive the enlightment of wisdom and love which started,
historically, in the Arab region" HRH stressed.

ADC vs ARMENTEL: Exchange ch limited bandwidth load natural decrease

ADC vs. ARMENTEL: Exchange channel limited bandwidth and load natural
decrease – different

Panorama.am

(PRESS RELEASE) – Recent emotional statement of General Director of
ArmenTel Mr. Klimko, publicized on the website of one of the agencies,
on Friday 25/12/2009, confirms that Mr. Klimko still did not
understand the most important thing: ADC has no obligation to ArmenTel
in terms of mirroring international resources.

Nevertheless, assuming that the Mr. Klimko is in unintentional
confusion, and being interested in the awareness of market
participants and the public, ADC is committed to provide all
interested parties a comprehensive technical explanation with
illustrations.

Let us mention that ADC does not limit the bandwidth of the exchange
channel between the networks of our companies. The service of
mirroring international resources was simply turned off at the time of
the work to re-equipment the network of ADC. Switching off the
mirroring resources has been made in the best interests of the other
operators, otherwise the users of these operators would experience
inconvenience because of periodic interruptions of access to mirroring
resources during the re-equipment period.

Switching off the mirroring resources in no way limits access to
resources by users of any operator, since in the absence of mirrors
the original resources become available through international channels
of communication of the operator.

As it is clear from the illustration, that ArmenTel users had access
to the mirroring resources through the exchange channel of
communication between networks of ADC and ArmenTel. The bandwidth of
the exchange channel is 100Mb/s, utilization of the same channel at
the time was 97 Mb/s. As it is obvious from the illustration, users of
ArmenTel used mirroring resources.

It is also quite clear from the second illustration, that after the
switching off the mirroring resources, the same users were
automatically redirected to the main resources available in the
Internet. This access to the resources is already provided by
international communication channels of ArmenTel, to which our company
has nothing to do. As it is clearly visible in the same illustration,
the bandwidth of the exchange channel between our two companies still
is 100Mb/s but utilization is already 4Mb/s, which is quite natural,
since users of ArmenTel were no longer using mirroring resource and
thus do not load exchange channel.

We consider it necessary with regards to the statement of Mr. Klimko,
where he says – «ADC in fact recognized that the bandwidth of the
exchange channel between our two companies was limited, as I said at
the press conference. Moreover, we have shown in the chart, how it
happened, so it is impossible to deny that», to re-reiterate that this
has nothing to do with reality and may be justified in the best case
that the Director of ArmenTel was incorrectly informed by his own
staff. There is a fundamental difference between the limited bandwidth
of the exchange channel and natural decrease of the load of exchange
channel. If the General Director of ArmenTel at the press conference
shows to the journalists the decrease of the exchange channel, it does
not mean that the bandwidth of the channel was limited. He is either
very misled, or attempts to mislead the public.

The question remains: why users of ArmenTel had difficulties in
accessing main resources through international communication channels
of ArmenTel?

With the continuing interest of the public we announce that works to
refurbish a network are finished and service of mirroring
international resources as of yesterday has been activated, so if he
ArmenTel not limited the bandwidth of the exchange channel, then load
exchange channel will naturally increase and reach its maximum already
during the second half of the day.

P.S. Despite the fact that the above material was successfully tested
from the number of target audiences including housewives, ADC as a
socially responsible company that cares about its reputation, declares
its readiness and invites the Director of ArmenTel at any convenient
time to conduct a logical debate on the television to reveal the truth
regarding this issue.

Azerbaijani Propaganda Film Presents Distorted Facts On Kojalu

AZERBAIJANI PROPAGANDA FILM PRESENTS DISTORTED FACTS ON KOJALU

Tert.am

The RA Ministry of Defense Department of Information and Public
Relations has issued a statement advising Azerbaijan’s agitprop
members to be more attentive and not disseminate false truths, so
that they may not be so obvious and so easily revealed.

The Armenian Minisry of Defense’s statement reads:

"An Azerbaijani ‘film’ about Kojalu appeared on the internet the day
before, where ‘hospitable and peaceful’ Azerbaijanis were describing
Kojalu’s ‘tragedy’.

"There are numerous fake news and distorted facts in this Azerbaijani
propaganda ‘film’ based on obvious lies.

"Brazenly untrue are comments from the book ‘written’ by Zori Balayan.

Just a few months ago, Balayan had announced himself that he did not
write such a book.

"It is noted in the film that Kojalu’s escaped residents were
shot near the Armenian village of Nakhichevanik. This fact also
doesn’t correspond to reality, since in February 1992, the village
of Nakhichevanik, found near Aghtam, was not under the control of
Armenian military force.

"The film concludes on a sad note, with heart-wrenching music,
and with the apparent photos of victims and witnesses of the
events. It becomes evident after just a 1-2-minute [internet]
search that one of the photos is that of an injured Armenian child
which was printed in the December 5, 1991, issue of [the Russian
publication] Komsomolets Kuzbass; the article is titled ‘Long Road
to Erkech.’ The electronic version of this article is available at

TURKEY WOULD OPEN AN ARMENIAN CHURCH IN AN EASTERN CITY TO WORSHIP IN 2010

PanARMENIAN.Net
24.12.2009 14:35 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Munir Karaloglu, the governor of the eastern
province of Van, said they would open the Akdamar Church to worship
in September 2010.

"We expect all Armenian citizens to a prayer at the Akdamar Church
on September 12, 2010," Karaloglu told AA correspondent.

The Akdamar Church on Akdamar Island on Lake Van was opened in 2007
as a museum after it was restored by the Turkish government between
May 2005 and October 2006. The restoration costed 1.7 million USD
(2.6 million Turkish liras).

Karaloglu said he had contacted the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for
opening of the church to worship, and they would invite all Armenians
to the prayer in 2010.

Then Turkish Culture & Tourism Minister Atilla Koc, then Armenian
Deputy Minister of Culture Gagik Gyurjan, and Mesrob II, the patriarch
of Turkish Armenians, participated in the inauguration ceremony on
March 29, 2007.

The Akdamar Church was constructed by architect bishop Manuel between
915 and 921 A.D. under the supervision of King Gagik I.

Among the important pieces of Armenian architecture, the church draws
attraction with its stone workmanship and the relieves on its walls.
