ANCA TO PRESIDENT OBAMA: "DO THE RIGHT THING. RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE"

White House meeting with Erdogan takes place as Armenian Americans
continue call-in campaign urging Obama to honor his Armenian Genocide
Pledge

US President Barack Obama meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan in Washington on Dec. 7, 2009.

WASHINGTON-Armenian Americans made the final push in their month-long
Countdown to Erdogan with a White House call-in day urging President
Barack Obama to honor his campaign pledge by telling visiting Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Erdogan that the U.S. condemns the Armenian
Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of America, (ANCA).

"In April, President Obama missed an opportunity to reclaim the moral
high ground on ending the cycle of genocide," stated ANCA Executive
Director Aram Hamparian. "Today, in his meeting with Prime Minister
Erdogan, we urge President Obama to ‘get it right’ – by recognizing
the Armenian Genocide and urging Turkey’s leadership to do the same."

The ANCA Executive Director had expressed concerns about Prime
Minister Erdogan’s efforts to use the meeting with Obama to continue
U.S. complicity in Armenian Genocide denial:

"Prime Minister Erdogan – having succeeded in using the Ankara-inspired
Protocols to enlist the cooperation of yet another U.S. Administration
into its campaign to block recognition of the Armenian Genocide –
is now coming to Washington to cement his gains and further press
his advantage," said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.

"High on his agenda, it seems, will be showcasing Turkey’s public
disregard for President Obama’s twin priorities for Armenia-Turkey
normalization, namely that they be established without preconditions
and within a reasonable time-frame. Today, more than seven months
after our President’s speech in Ankara – during which he broke his
pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide – it’s patently clear that
Turkey has in fact imposed preconditions, will not act in a reasonable
time-frame, and, more broadly, views this entire process as simply
a way to extend U.S. complicity in Turkey’s denials from one April
24th to the next," added Hamparian.

Countdown to Erdogan Campaign Channels Armenian American Concerns to
White House, Congress, and Media

Armenian Americans concerned about the Obama-Erdogan agenda have
participated in the ANCA’s "Countdown to Erdogan" campaign – the
month-long grassroots initiative to encourage President Obama to
challenge Turkey’s Prime Minister with the facts of the Armenian
Genocide during their December 7th White House meeting.

The "Countdown" has generated media coverage in the U.S., Turkey, and
Armenia, and, as participation in the campaign grew with each passing
week, it came under increasingly heavy attack from the Turkish lobby.

The United Press International reported, on December 1st, that, "The
Armenian National Committee of America stepped up its lobbying efforts
ahead of the [Erdogan] visit, calling on its supporters to contact
their Washington representatives to encourage Obama to make true on
his campaign pledge to recognize the Armenian genocide." The Turkish
Coalition publicly criticized the campaign as a political "blitzkrieg."

The final days of the effort are devoted to calling directly on
President Obama – through phone calls, letters, and social networking
vehicles – to honor his pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide
and urging him to demonstrate resolve in working to end the ongoing
cycle of genocide and denial. The calls are increasingly important
following a letter issued by President Obama last week praising the
Turkey-Armenia protocols, and once again, refraining to properly
characterize that crime against humanity.

Speakers Of Armenian And Korean Parliaments Sign Memorandum Of Mutua

SPEAKERS OF ARMENIAN AND KOREAN PARLIAMENTS SIGN MEMORANDUM OF MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING

NOYAN TAPAN
DECEMBER 4, 2009
SEQUL

SEOUL, DECEMBER 4, NOYAN TAPAN. The delegation headed by Speaker of
the RA National Assembly Hovik Abrahamian on December 3 met Speaker
of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Kim Hyong-O.

Stressing the necessity to deepen interparliamentary cooperation, H.

Abrahamian said that the interparliamentary friendship groups set up
in the parliaments of Armenia and Korea may contribute considerably
to the identification of new fields of cooperation between the two
countries. It was mentioned that there is much potential for further
development of Armenian-Korean links in various spheres.

In terms of using the existing potential in the economic cooperation,
H. Abrahamian pointed out the encouragement of investments by
South Korean companies in the Armenian economy, noting that the
Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Yerevan has carried
out efficient activities in this direction over five years – in
the person of Honorary Consul of Korea in Armenia, deputy of the
RA National Assembly Armen Abrahamian. The speaker of the Armenian
parliament attached special importance to the formation of a legal
and contractual field for ensuring the most favorable conditions for
economic cooperation.

H. Abrahamian stated with satisfaction that in recent years Armenia
and Korea have been successfully cooperating in international
organizations, which is due to mutual assistance. In his words, Armenia
values the approaches of friendly countries to the peaceful settlement
of the Karabakh conflict. He expressed a hope that South Korea will
maintain its balanced position. Korea has always taken an impartial
position during the discussions on Nagorno Karabakh at the United
Nations by abstaining in the votes on proposals made by Azerbaijan.

H. Abrahamian said that we share Korea’s concern about the
establishment of security and stability in the region. He underlined
that Armenia is also in favor of peaceful resolution of conflicts,
in this connection noting once again that there is no alternative to
the peaceful solution of the Karabakh problem – a resolution through
negotiations.

H. Abrahamian and Kim Hyong-O signed a memorandum of mutual
understanding for the purpose of further development of friendly
links and cooperation between the two parliaments.

The RA National Assembly’s press center reports that on the same day
the Armenian delegation visited GT Group company which is implementing
construction work at the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant’s power unit
with a combined steam-and-gas cycle.

The president of GT Group said he was informed about the memorandum’s
signing, adding that it would become an important step for fostering
cooperation of the two countries in various spheres. He thanked H.

Abrahamian for assistance with their company’s entrance into Armenia,
expressing confidence that the company will expand its activities
in Armenia. Emphasizing the successful operation of the company in
Armenia, H. Abrahamian expressed a hope that cooperation between
Armenia and GT Group will prove long-term.

Armenia’s National Security Service Thwarts Illegal ‘Financial Pyram

ARMENIA’S NATIONAL SECURITY SERVICE THWARTS ILLEGAL ‘FINANCIAL PYRAMID’ SCAM

ARKA
Dec 3, 2009

YEREVAN, December 3, /ARKA/. Armenia’s National Security Service
said it has exposed an illegal ‘financial pyramid’ scam acting under
the guise of a network marketing. A press release by the National
Security Service said its officers tracked down and exposed the
criminal activity of two, independently operating groups under the
guise of international Quetsnet organization that was aimed at stealing
people’s money and establishment of so-called ‘financial pyramid.

The press release said Questnet having representatives in different
countries, including Armenia, sold to citizens via Internet glass
bio-disks which ostensibly have positive effect on people’s health
as well as gold adornments and chains costing from $600 to $1,500.

Later after these people realized that what they paid is tens times
higher than the real cost of the goods, demanded their money back,
but in return they were proposed to get enrolled into their scam,
pledging them substantial profits.

The press release said the criminal scam was established by an Iranian
citizen Raimond Kocharian and Armenian citizen Vache Manukian, who
managed to enroll 113 Armenian citizens into their scam. Both are
detained and the investigation is being handled by the National
Security Service, which called on Armenians to refrain from the
temptation of getting rich in no time. It said those who suffered
from this criminals can report by calling 57-93-16.

"Neo-Ottoman" Turkey?

"NEO-OTTOMAN" TURKEY?

Dec 3 2009

ANKARA – Nowadays, the international media are obsessed with the
question of who "lost" Turkey and what that supposed loss means for
Europe and the West. More alarmingly, some commentators liken Turkey’s
neighborhood policy to a revival of Ottoman imperialism. Recently,
a senior Turkish columnist went so far as to quote Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu as saying that "we are indeed neo-Ottoman."

As someone who was present when Davutoglu made his presentation to the
parliamentary faction of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party
(AKP), I can attest to the fact that he did not use such terminology.

In fact, Davutoglu and all of us in the AKP foreign-policy community
never use this term, because it is simply a mispresentation of our
position.

Turkey’s neighborhood policy is devised to reintegrate Turkey into
its immediate neighborhoods, including the Balkans, the Black Sea,
the Caucasus, the Middle East, and the Eastern Mediterranean. We aim
to deepen our political dialogue, increase our trade, and multiply
our people-to-people contacts with our neighbors in the form of
sports, tourism, and cultural actvities. When Egon Bahr formulated
his Ostpolitik in the 1960’s, no one asked Will Brandt whether Germany
was lost.

God bestowed upon Turkey a geographical position that fundamentally
requires for us engage with East and West, North and South. This is
neither a choice nor a luxury – it is a necessity.

The symbol of the Byzantine and the Selcuk Empires, which occupied
roughly the same geography that Turkey does today, was a double-headed
eagle looking both east and west. It should be no wonder that Turkey
is also seeking to engage both ends of its territories and feels that
its security is best consolidated by minimizing risks together with
its neighbors.

So we find the current debate on Turkey’s orientation rather
superflous, and in some cases ill-intentioned. Our neighborhood policy
needs support, not criticism. Turkey has become an invaluable asset
in the make-up of our surrounding regions, and is already changing
the status quo in favor of more stability and predictability. Our
efforts at normalization with Armenia, for example, are destined to
bring change to the entire South Caucasus. We are doing our part in
terms of burden-sharing. Sensible Europeans understand that.

To be sure, some of our neighbors are difficult. But no country has the
luxury of choosing its neighbors. Turkey’s neighborhood policy is very
realistic, based on genuine interests, not some romantic neo-Ottoman
nostagia, as more than a few international commentators have suggested.

True, there is a neo-Ottoman revival in the cultural field, and our
citizens are eager to rediscover Ottoman life, culture, and practices.

As Turkey is normalizing domestically, it is also reinterpreting
its national historical narrative. This is a natural byproduct of
consolidating our democracy. However, trying to paint our carefully
constructed foreign-policy initiatives with imperialist overtones is
not only a stark mispresentation, but also does gross injustice to
our well-intentioned efforts to stabilize our region.

In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of gates, doorways, beginnings,
and endings. Turkey today is a Janus-like geography that offers gates
and doorways to the East and West. It offers beginnings and endings
to the Caucasus, the Black Sea, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean.

In this capacity, Turkey compliments and contributes to a unique
transitional passage between otherwise difficult regions, for it
signifies centuries-old co-existence and adjustment. Turkish foreign
policy contributes to that coming together and helps its immeditate
neighborhoods to connect with one another.

Contrary to recent charges, Turkey’s foreign policymakers are not
seeking to revive the Ottoman Empire. Instead, we seek Turkey’s
historic reintegration into its immediate neighborhoods, thereby
correcting an anomaly of the Cold War years. Such re-integration would
only benefit the European Union and our other Western, NATO allies.

None of them, therefore, has any reason to express discomfort with
Turkey.
