Dear Friends,
A memorial
service will be held for Kevork Hovnanian at St. Vartan Cathedral in

We will mourn the loss of an outstanding American Armenian and a founder of the
Fund for Armenian Relief.

In Memoriam: Kevork S. Hovnanian (1923-2009)
With great sorrow, the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of
America mourns the death of Mr. Kevork S. Hovnanian, who passed away
on September 24, 2009, at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was 86.

It would be impossible in a few words to pay proper tribute to
Mr. Hovnanian, or to convey what he has meant to the Armenian Church,
to the Republic of Armenia, and to the cause of our people. Our own
Diocese was blessed to have his active presence, his wise counsel, and
his bold, imaginative leadership, as part of its daily experience for
many years. His influence over our leadership bodies-principally the
Fund for Armenian Relief, the Armenian Church Endowment Fund, and the
Diocesan Board of Directors-has been incalculable. Indeed, were it
not for Kevork Hovnanian, our Diocese would be a vastly different
institution today.

Mr. Hovnanian was also a great supporter of the Mother See of Holy
Etchmiadzin. Among his many benefactions was the renovation of the
130-year-old Kevorkian Seminary. Certainly, he was one of the great
men of his generation; a giant not only in Armenian affairs, but in
the worlds of industry, international commerce, and philanthropy. He
felt at ease among great dignitaries and world leaders. Yet he was
equally at home among people of every station and walk of life.

It has been my privilege to witness the great faith and piety which
animated his actions, and filled his heart-a quality which he shared
with his loving wife, Sirvart, their children Sossi, Esto, Ara, Lucy,
and Nadia, and their many grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers go
out to them.

He was above all a family man, the patriarch of a vibrant, noble, and
loving family, in whose intense embrace he spent his final days. On
Monday, September 28, the family held a private funeral, over which I
presided, at the St. Stepanos Church of Elberon, N.J., which
Mr. Hovnanian had built in honor of his mother.

We wish to inform the public that a memorial service will be held for
Kevork Hovnanian at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York City, on
Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. The family has asked that
in-lieu-of-flowers donations in memory of Kevork Hovnanian be made to
the Fund for Armenian Relief Second Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10016), or
to the St. Stepanos Armenian Church endowment trust fund (1184 Ocean
Avenue, Elberon, N.J. 07740).

A brief film produced by the Fund for Armenian Relief in 2006,
honoring Mr. Hovnanian’s remarkable contributions to our church and to
the Republic of Armenia, is available on our Diocesan website, at

May our risen Lord remember his faithful servant on the day of His
judgment.

With prayers,
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian
Primate

TURKISH EXPERT: NOT EVERYBODY IN TURKEY CONSIDER ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS IN CONTEXT OF TURKISH-AZERBAIJANI BROTHERHOOD

ArmInfo. Nor everybody in Turkey consider the Armenian- Turkish
relations in the context of the Turkish-Azerbaijani brotherhood,
Senior analyst at the European Stability Initiative in Turkey (ESI)
Diba Nigar Goksel said at today’s international conference in Yerevan
"Armenia- Turkey: Prospects of Normalization of Relations in the
Light of European Integration".

"Naturally, Azerbaijan’s stance with respect to the Armenian-Turkish
negotiations is perceived in Turkey as a quite important factor,
much affecting our country’s policy on this issue. However, they in
Turkey sincerely hope for establishment of good neighbourly relations
with Armenia", the analyst said.

The conference has been organized by Analytical Center of Globalization
and Regional Cooperation and the British Embassy in Armenia. Experts
and politicians from Armenia and Turkey, a number of ambassadors
and representatives of foreign states in Armenia take part in the
conference.

OPENING ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER TO RESULT IN REAL GROWTH OF INVESTMENTS, RA MINISTER OF ECONOMY SAYS

NOYAN TAPAN
SEPTEMBER 28, 2009
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 28, NOYAN TAPAN. The analyses show that in case of
the normalization of relations with Turkey, direct investments in the
Armenian economy may grow by more than 50%. RA Minister of Economy
Nerses Yeritsian stated this at the discussion "The Geopolitical
and Economic Consequences of the Normalization of Armenian-Turkish
Relations and the Role of the European Union in this Process" held
within the framework of the series "European Resolution" of the Public
Television Company.

According to the minister, the normalization of relations
among Georgia, Armenia, and Turkey will make the region more
attractive. Opening the border will allow Armenia to consider the idea
of joining bigger regional projects, while the European Union and
the European Commission are ready to assist with the implementation
of such serious regional projects. N. Yeritsian noted that with the
border’s opening, Armenia will have a direct border with the EU as
Turkey is a member of the EU Customs Union and it has signed a free
trade agreement with the European Union. Armenia is also carrying
on negotiations with the aim of signing a free trade agreement with
the EU. The countries willing to use EU markets are required to make
efficient domestic reforms. N. Yeritsian underlined that the opening
of the border will accelerate the process of such reforms in Armenia.

Objecting to the minister, ARF Bureau member David Lokian said the
EU follows "thousands of standards, hundreds of procedures", and
Armenia will encounter serious problems if it is not prepared for
that. "We can only supply small amounts to Turkey because the existing
procedures do not allow us to export goods to that country," he said,
adding that since the late 1960s Turkey has been conducting a policy of
export promotion and today it has numerous instruments to suspend the
import. "We already have a disbalance with Turkey – with respect to
the closed Armenian-Turkish border and the World Trade Organization
(WTO) membership. Their average customs duties are 48.5%, whereas
ours make 14%. There are no WTO-established customs duties on 50%
of goods imported into Turkey, and the government can use a customs
duty of up to 228% in order to stop the import at the given moment,"
D. Lokian noted.

Nerses Yeritsian dismissed these objections, saying that equal
conditions are envisaged for all member states of WTO and Turkey cannot
be in a more privileged position. "These figures are impressive but
they do not represent the facts, and Armenia can also carry out a
state intervention and assistance," the minister said. He expressed
confidence that the state incentives will accelerate this process.

G20: Iran’s nuclear program watched by superpowers
26.09.2009 14:56 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President
Dmitry Medvedev have agreed to consider additional sanctions on Iran
if it failed to respond to Western proposals.

Mr. Obama demanded Iran `come clean’ about its nuclear program and
said the unity of the global community should put the Islamic Republic
`on notice’ that it must heed international rules.

There is `unity on the part of the world community saying that Iran’s
actions raised grave doubts in terms of their presentation that their
nuclear program was for peaceful purposes,’ Obama said at a news
conference concluding a summit of the Group of 20 nations in
Pittsburgh.

"Sanctions, serious additional sanctions, remain a possibility,’ he
said, calling on Tehran to "seize the opportunity" of negotiations
with the six powers (Germany, China and the U.S., France, Britain and
Russia) on the Iranian nuclear case.

Mr. Medvedev, who has expressed public doubts about the value of
sanctions, indicated that he is open to enforcing penalties on
Iran. `Sanctions may be inevitable,’ he said.

`When all instruments have been used and failed, one can use
international legal sanctions,’ Medvedev said.

He said nations should promote `positive incentives for Iran’ to try
to win compliance from the country. `Should we fail in that case,
we’ll consider other options,’ Medvedev said.

Stokoe hopes to continue tennis mastery

Stokoe hopes to continue tennis mastery

The Brampton Guardian
Friday September 25 2009
By FRANK JUZENAS

BRAMPTON

Cecil Stokoe is always looking for some good competition on the tennis
court.
But that’s not the only reason he is looking forward to his trip to
Sydney, Australia for the World Masters Games next month. Stokoe was
happy when he found out that the Games (held every four years) were
going to Sydney. Besides playing he will have a chance to reunite with
family members he has not seen since they were together in Calcutta,
India in 1953.

`Who would have thought the game of tennis can provide miracles,”
said Stokoe whose excitement is building as he gets set to travel to
Australia with Kathleen, his wife of 47 years.

Stokoe’s tennis accomplishments landed him a spot in the Brampton
Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. In Sydney, the 73-year old will be
competing in singles in the aged 70 to 74 division and will also
likely compete in mixed doubles with a partner that will be determined
upon arrival.

Pat Farrell also a member of the Brampton Tennis Club will be in
Australia in the ladies doubles.

For Stokoe it was an interesting journey that brought him to Canada
and Brampton. His grandparents were Armenian refugees from Turkey in
the early 1900’s who fled to India.

His cousins not only provided shelter for Cecil and his widowed
mother, but while living with them in Calcutta, Stokoe and his two
sisters were able to get free missionary schooling.

The family went their separate ways with Stokoe ending up going to
Scotland to continue his education in engineering and then to Canada
and Brampton in 1974 where he landed a job at Nortel. The Gabriel side
of the family wound up migrating to Australia.

Stokoe said his late mother told him that if he ever got the
opportunity to thank his cousins for what they had done for his
family, to do so. Now because of tennis he will be able to do it in
person.

By a coincidence his first cousin, Craig Gabriel is also very involved
in tennis
re he covers the sport, recently spending time with star Lleyton
Hewitt and his family for an exclusive magazine feature.

When Stokoe received a retirement package from Nortel in 1993 at the
age of 57, he went for a physical exam where he was diagnosed with
leukemia.

`I was told this is what killed (broadcaster) Barbara Frum at 53 (in
1992),” said Stokoe.
However with determination he has been able to battle the disease,
which is in remission. He feels his active lifestyle is the reason he
has been able to keep it under control.

Besides playing tennis about three times a week with the Brampton
Tennis Club, he goes for a run each morning near Chris Gibson
Recreation Centre. He also does stretching and strength training.
On the tennis court he has won a number of medals. That included
attending five Canadian Senior Games from 2002 to 2008 where he has
won four gold medals and a bronze.

He also captured the World Masters Championship in the 65 to 69
division four years ago in Edmonton.

It was there that it was announced the next Games would be in Sydney,
Hearing that, Stokoe was determined to compete there so he could
combine the Games with visiting his cousins.

The World Masters Games has become the world’s biggest sporting event
in terms of participation. It is expected about 30,000 athletes will
be attending from about 100 countries, competing in 28 sports.

They are scheduled to run from Oct. 10 to 18. The age minimum varies
for each sport from 25 for diving and 27 for rowing to 30 and 35 for
the others.

He and Kathleen leave on Sunday, Oct. 4 and are planning to make it
about a month-long visit with some touring of Australia and New
Zealand included.

Stokoe said he is thankful to so many for allowing him to be where he
is. He mentions his family and the missionaries who helped him in
India providing shelter and education, his partners at the Brampton
Tennis Club for his tennis success, the city of Brampton Parks and
Recreation department for providing training facilities and most of
all for his
ars.

Unbeaten lightweight Luis Ramos stated that he knows he has to beat
veteran fighters that are put in front of him. He sure let his hands
do the talking on Thursday night. Ramos won a six round unanimous
decision over Cristian Favela before an almost sold-out crowd at Club
Nokia at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, CA. The bout headlined a seven-bout
`Fight Night Club’ card, presented by Golden Boy Promotions. Ramos was
coming off a sixth round stoppage victory over Sandro Marcos almost
two months ago in the same venue. Favela has faced a long list of
prospects and contenders and had hopes of pulling the upset against
Ramos. He had lost five of six bouts prior to the Ramos bout. Ramos
did his best work from the outside. The southpaw Ramos was content to
box, landing two-punch combinations to the head. Ramos slipped the
occasional hook to the body.

Favela did his best to trade with Ramos on the inside, something that
Ramos should do less of when fighting a veteran and cagey veteran in
Favela. Undaunted, Favela countered Ramos with right hands to the
head.

Although Favela pressed the action, Ramos spent the second half of the
fight boxing from the outside. Working behind a jab, Ramos controlled
the tempo, avoiding exchanges with Favela, who would move in to
counter Ramos.

It was a solid performance by Ramos, who keeps improving with each
bout, especially against a fighter like Favela.

All three judges scored the bout 60-54 in favor of
Ramos. Fightnews.com scored the bout 59-55 in favor of Ramos.

`This guy was tough and he could take a shot,’ assessed Ramos, who is
managed by Frank Espinoza. `I just stuck to my game plan. I was
controlling him with my jab and worked his body.’

When asked what he learned in fighting a boxer with a lot of
experience like Favela, Ramos responded, `This bout taught me a lot. I
know that I have
despite their records. I learn a lot from fighting guys like
Favela. It will help me in the long run.’

This was the third time that Ramos has fought at Club Nokia, up the 5
Freeway from his home in Orange County.

`I’m always excited about fighting here. I like to perform in front of
my fans.’

Ramos, from Santa Ana, CA, improves to (13-0, 7 KOs). Favela, from Los
Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, drops to (16-21-6, 9 KOs).

Dardan decisions Griffin
Lightweight Karl Dardan won a action-filled six round unanimous
decision over Renell Griffin.

Dardan used his lighting quick hands to counter and even beat Griffin
to the punch during exchanges in the first round.

Griffin came back in the second, momentarily stunning Dardan with a
counter left hand to the chin. Griffin did his best work on the
inside, where he would neutralize Dardan’s speed and land punches to
the head.

Dardan controlled the action in the second half of the fight. Using an
occasional right uppercut to the head, Dardan kept Griffin on the
outside by countering with a jab followed by right hands to the head.

Both fighters traded in the final round. Sensing he was down on the
scorecards, Griffin pressed the action, taking the fight to
Dardan. However, Dardan continued to box and landed hooks from the
outside until the bell sounded to end the fight.

All three judges scored the bout in favor of Dardan, scoring the bout
59-55, 59-55, and 58-56.

Dardan, from Philadelphia, PA, improves to (5-0, 2 KOs). Griffin, from
Bridge City, LA, drops to (5-2-1, 1 KO).

Huerta overpowers Aranda
Featherweight Charles Huerta won a hard-fought six round unanimous
decision over tough Rodrigo Aranda.

This was Huerta’s first fight back since his shocking knockout loss to
Derrick Wilson in July. It was no easy return bout as he faced Aranda,
who has an aggressive style, but lacks punching power.

Aranda took the bout early to Huerta, attacking the body and landing
the occasional right hand. Huerta countered, trying to land on top and
to the body of Aranda.

As the b
itched in the favor of Huerta. He found openings by stepping back or
to the side, landing right hands to the head. Although Aranda remained
competitive, he had little answer for Huerta’s high connect rate.

Right before the end of the fourth round, referee David Denkin
deducted a point from Aranda, for hitting the back of Huerta’s head.

Huerta dominated the final two rounds. He was stronger and busier,
connecting with hard shots to the head and the occasional hook to the
body. Although he tried hanging in there until the final bell, Aranda
slowed down considerably.

All three judges scored the bout for Huerta, with scores of 59-54,
58-55, and 57-56. Fightnews.com scored the bout 58-55 in favor of
Huerta.

`I felt a little rusty in there during the first few rounds,’ said
Huerta, who had a cut over his left eye that he suffered in the second
round, a first in his career. `He came in to fight. I had never fought
anyone like that in my career. It was an important experience for
me. I’m glad I was able to box more and that it went six rounds.

Huerta, from Paramount, CA, improves to (13-1, 7 KOs). Aranda, from
Las Vegas, NV by way of Tabasco, Mexico, drops to (8-11-2, 2 KOs).

Hovanessian impressive in stopping Cardenas
Art Hovanessian impressively stopped Baudel Cardenas in the fifth
round of a scheduled six round bout.

Cardenas was competitive and made Hovanessian work on the
inside. However, Hovanessian had too much for the veteran Cardenas.

Hovanessian scored a knockdown at the end of the fourth round,
dropping Cardenas with a left hook to the head. Hovanessian followed
up with two knockdowns in the fifth. The first was a right hand to the
head, which Cardenas barely beat the count. To his credit, Cardenas
tried to fight back, but another accumulation of punches dropped
Cardenas again to the canvas, prompting referee David Denkin waved the
fight over. No official time of the stoppage was announced.

Hovanessian, from Glendale, CA by way of Yerevan, Armenia, improves to
(9-0-1, 4 KOs). Cardenas, fro
6 KOs).

Rios stops Sarabia
Featherweight Ronny Rios made quick work of veteran Manuel Sarabia,
stopping him in the first round of a scheduled four round bout.

Sarabia has faced a who’s who of prospects and contenders in previous
bouts. He was brought in to test the young Rios, bringing years of
experience against the 19 year old.

Unfortunately for Sarabia, Rios sized him up and waited for openings
to counter. One counter right hand to the chin dropped Sarabia to the
seat of his pants. Referee Ray Corona counted Sarabia out at 38
seconds of the round.

Rios, from Santa Ana, CA, goes to (7-0, 3 KOs). Sarabia, from
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, drops to (16-30-9, 10 KOs).

Godoy KO’s Solis
Lightweight Eric Godoy made a successful professional debut, stopping
Javier Solis in the second round of a scheduled four round bout.

It was a sloppy bout as Godoy was the more technical fighter of the
two. Solis would charge in and throw wild punches that landed hardly
landed. He paid a price as Godoy countered with hard right hooks to
the head. It was one of those counter right hands to the chin that
dropped Solis at the end of the first round.

To his credit, Solis came on in the second round and did land right
hands. However, an accumulation of punches backed up Solis against the
ropes. Solis tired and stopped throwing punches. Godoy pressed forward
and hurt a defenseless Solis against the ropes, prompting referee
David Denkin to stop the bout at 2:22.

Godoy, from East Los Angeles, CA, wins his professional debut. Solis,
from Oxnard, CA, drops to (0-3).

Lightweight Juan Sandoval stopped Victor Martinez in the first round
of a scheduled four round bout.

Martinez left himself wide open as he threw wild punches against
Sandoval. As Martinez moved in, Sandoval threw and landed a left hook
that Martinez ran into, dropping him to the canvas. Referee Ray Corona
immediately stopped the bout at 2:40.

Sandoval, from San Bernardino, CA, won his professional
debut. Martinez, from Los Angeles, CA, drops to (0-2).

ACA Representatives Meet With Schiff

ACA REPRESENTATIVES MEET WITH SCHIFF

s15296.html
09:55:27 – 25/09/2009

PASADENA – Armenian Council of America (ACA) representatives met with
Congressman Adam Schiff and discussed recent developments on the
Armenian Genocide resolution, US-Armenia relations, Armenia-Turkey
relations; and the Obama administration’s policies toward Armenia and
Artsakh.

The ACA delegation commended Congressman Schiff for his continued
stance and insistence on the reaffirmation of the Armenian Genocide,
democracy in Armenia, the sovereignty of Artsakh, and his apprehension
towards the Armenia-Turkey protocols.

Specifically, the Congressman reiterated his position on the
protocols, stating, `While I welcome what may be an important step in
the rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey and hope that the
upcoming talks result in a swift opening of full diplomatic and
commercial relations between Ankara and Yerevan, as well as a
reopening of the border, I have serious concerns about some provisions
of the protocols accompanying the announcement.’

`In particular, I was deeply disappointed to see that the protocols
call for the creation of an historical commission to review the events
of 1915-23. This is a thoroughly discredited idea; there is no
dispute among scholars that the Armenian people were the subject of
genocide during the waning days of the Ottoman Empire and an
historical commission is another effort to obfuscate the truth,’

`Turkey cannot be allowed to re-write this tragic part of its history
as a price for normal relations with Armenia. To do so means
acquiescence in a charade that demeans the memory of so many victims.

`True reconciliation between the Armenian and Turkish peoples will
occur when Turkey acknowledges the genocide that was committed by the
Ottoman Empire against Armenians from 1915 – 1923. The Armenian
Genocide, the first genocide of the 20th Century, resulted in the
deaths of 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children and the sorrow
that the Armenian people carry in their hearts cannot be healed by
diplomatic relations alone,’ he added.

The Congressman also expressed congratulations to the people of
Armenia on the eighteenth anniversary of Armenia’s independence and
continued his committment to ensuring that the United States
government does all that it can to help Armenia build governmental
institutions and civil society with the goal of helping democracy
flourish.

The ACA delegation updated the Congressman in their continued efforts
helping the Congressman in strengthening; US-Armenia relations,
democracy in Armenia, the development of Artsakh and advocacy for a
just and truthful representation of the Armenian Genocide. The
delegation presented the Congressman with a copy of `The Morgenthau
Story’ DVD which they have been distributing to members of the
U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The Congressman thanked
the ACA for their efforts and diligence.
