Jews Check Armenian Genocide Stance

JEWS CHECK ARMENIAN GENOCIDE STANCE
By Allison Hoffman

An official with a leading American Jewish organization told the
The Jerusalem Post on Monday that a deterioration in Israel-Turkey
relations might prompt his group and others to reconsider Armenian
efforts to win recognition of the century-old Turkish massacres
as genocide.

In this photo provided by the Photlure photo agency in Armenia, a
boy pauses in front of a wall-sized poster depicting the faces of 90
survivors of the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire,
in Yerevan, Armenia.

Slideshow: Pictures of the week A bill that would ensure such
recognition by the US, which was backed by Rep. Adam Schiff – a Jewish
Democrat who represents a heavily Armenian area of Los Angeles – failed
to make it to a Congressional vote in 2007. However, it sparked a row
in the American Jewish community between those who sided with Turkey
in an effort to protect Israel’s political interests, and those who
argued that Jews were particularly responsible for helping other
groups block the public denial of genocide.

"No Jew or Israeli in his right mind will insult Turkey," the official
told the Post. "But next time… they might not come to Turkey’s aid
or equivocate quite so much on the issue."

The Bush administration opposed the bill out of concern for what it
would do to US-Turkey relations.

The current blowup between Israel and Turkey comes amid expectations
that the Obama administration will name academic and writer Samantha
Power, an expert on genocide, to a key National Security Council
post dealing with multilateral institutions. Power has been outspoken
in labeling the Turkish massacre of Armenians genocide, albeit from
outside the government.

One Washington-based Jewish community leader said Jewish organizations
were unlikely to reorient their views and begin backing legislation
to recognize the Armenian genocide, arguing that this would only make
a delicate situation far worse.

"If organizations aren’t backing Armenian genocide resolutions
because of the Turkish-Israeli relationship and their concern about
the Turkish Jewish community, I don’t think they would change now,"
he said. "Those same concerns remain, and those same pressures remain."

Anti-Defamation League head Abraham Foxman – whose opposition to the
Armenian genocide legislation in 2007 provoked widespread criticism –
told the Post that as long as Israel maintained its diplomatic ties
with Turkey, he saw no immediate reason to change his position on
any future genocide resolutions.

"This is not a punishment or a reward issue – we don’t change our
position on what’s right or wrong based on what people say," Foxman
said. "The interests between Israel and Turkey continue."

Foxman also noted that he knew of Jewish friends who had cancelled
trips to Turkey over Erdogan’s comments, but described the Erdogan
flap as a disagreement between "friends."

"There have been some very inappropriate harsh statements by the
leadership, especially by the prime minister, which we think are
inappropriate," he said, "but they have not changed the basic
relationship [with Israel]."

Hilary Leila Krieger and Haviv Gur Rettig contributed to this report.

Trial Of Vahagn Chakhalyan Resumes After Two-Month Break

TRIAL OF VAHAGN CHAKHALYAN RESUMES AFTER TWO-MONTH BREAK

Lragir.am
15:22:41 – 02/02/2009

On January 29, 2009 the trial of the Javakheti-based Armenian political
activist, the leader of the United Javakheti Democratic Alliance
Vahagn Chakhalyan resumed. The court held hearings on January 28 and
January 29.

The observers of the Yerkir Union to the trial observed the following
facts:

1. Vahagn Chakhalyan announced hunger protest at the court of law
against the arrest of two civil society activists of Akhaltskha Grigor
Minasyan and Sergey Hakobjanyan by the Georgian government.

2. Since Vahagn Chakhalyan, his father and brother, as well as their
advocate Stepan Voskanyan do not speak Georgian, the court provided
an interpreter. However, the interpreting was improper, incomplete and
influent. Justice Cirra Maisuradzeh also hindered the interpreting, who
did not make necessary breaks in her speech to facilitate interpreting.

3. The Georgian legislation bars video and audio recording, as well
as photographing at the court of law. In the meantime, video or
audio recordings of the hearing would guarantee against possible
falsification of the court records by the Georgian government.

4. The French advocate of the family Patrick Arabian was absent at
the hearings. The Georgian government artificially postpones his
registration although all the necessary documents had been submitted
to the Ministry of Justice on January 13.

5. During the c ourt hearing on January 29 it became known that
Vahagn Chakhalyan was not provided with the Armenian translation of
the indictment after new charges had been brought against him on
December 3, 2008. However, the judge did not adjourn the hearing,
promising to provide the translation of the indictment later.

6. The judge dismissed the petition of the counsel for the defense for
a dactyloscopic examination of the weapon allegedly found in the house
of Vahagn Chakhalyan and the office of the Youth Sports and Culture
Union of Javakheti, explaining that over six months have passed since
the "revelation" of the weapon, and the fingerprints have been erased.

7. On January 29 Vahagn Chakhalyan made a political statement. The
judge interrupted the reading several times, explaining that it has
nothing to do with the case.

8. On January 28 no witness was present at the hearing. Some of
them sent letters confirming their affidavits and said reluctant to
participate in the hearings. The judge wanted to start examination
of the defendants and only after persistent objections of the counsel
for the defense adjourned the hearing for one day.

9. Only two plaintiffs and two witnesses showed up on January 29. The
circumstances of the rally of March 11, 2006 in Akhalkalaki were
examined, which is one of the points of the charges against Vahagn
Chakhalyan.

10. After the examination of the plaintiffs and witnesses the judge
adjourned20the trial till February 11.

Yerkir Union appeals to the corresponding international organizations
and human rights organizations calling them to monitor the trial of the
political activists and the members of his family, recognize Vahagn
Chakhalyan, the members of his family, as well as the other arrested
Armenian civil society activists in Georgia as political prisoners,
urge the Georgian government to stop repressions in Javakheti populated
with Armenians.

Lynchburg man looking for Noah’s Ark

Lynchburg man looking for Noah’s Ark
By _Christa Desrets_ (mailto:[email protected])

Published: January 31, 2009

It’s one of the most familiar Bible stories.

Saddened by the wickedness of man, God directs the righteous Noah to
build an ark for his family and two of each species of animal.

Together, they ride the ark through 40 days and 40 nights of
torrential rains that God unleashes upon the Earth. And when the
waters subside, Noah and the animals return to land.

`That seems almost like a fairy story,’ said archaeologist Randall
Price, who is director of Liberty University’s new Center for Judaic
Studies. `But we believe it was an actual event.’

This summer Price, 57, plans to continue on a journey to prove just
that as he joins an expedition to Mount Ararat. His team believes that
it is there,in Eastern Turkey, where Noah’s Ark remains preserved
underneath layers of rubble and ice.

`There’s a whole trail of history pointing to it (Mt. Ararat),’ Price
said in a recent interview. `But in our age, people tend to think it
ismore of a story like =80=98Jack and the Bean Stalk.’ Our aim is to
show that the Bible is good history.’

He pointed to Genesis 8:4, which states, `and on the seventeenth day
of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat,’
in The New International Version of the Bible.

For centuries, expeditions have set out to find Noah’s Ark but
havebeen unable to find any concrete evidence, beyond that of an
unwavering faith, to support its existence.

Retired Continental Airlines Pilot Richard Bright, 64, has visited
Turkey more than 30 times over the past 25 years in search of the
vessel.

`We’ve received many leads over the years, dating back intoantiquity,’
he said in a phone interview Friday. `We’ve had so many reports over
the years, and they talk about the same mountain.’

Last fall, a new tip peaked both his and Price’s interest.

A Kurdish shepherd told them that he had seen the ark, and even
climbed on top of it, when he was a boy.

The team hypothesizes that the ark is preserved in several pieces
beneath a glacier on the mountain, and every so often the glacier
recedes, exposing part of the vessel.

`That’s when he saw it as a boy,’ Price said, adding that they had
interviewed the shepherd and could find no reason to dis-trust him.

The shepherd asked for nothing in return, and agreed to lead Bright to
the site where he said he had seen the ark.

Bright first climbed to the site in September. Then a team including
Price, the shepherd, a mountaineer and several others made a follow-up
ascent to 15,000 feet later the same month.

They found the spot, Price said, but it now is covered by an estimated
60-foot-deep pile of boulders. Price believes the landslide may have
resulted from attacks against Kurdish rebels on the mountain, or
perhaps from explosives that were set off to cover up the ark.

`It’s a very delicate and almost clandestine environment,’ he said of
the area, which is near the Turkish border to Iran and Armenia. `The
danger level is high.’

But his team has negotiated with government and military authorities
and gained access to work at the site starting this spring, Price
said.

That’s when the team of archaeologists, geologists, explorers and
other volunteers plan to start removing boulders.

By summertime, they hope to reach the glacier and use ice-melting
equipment to access what they believe is preserved beneath. If a
structure is found, they plan to take samples to have analyzed and
dated.

But that may not be proof enough for some. Bright said people would
have to make up their own minds.

`We intend to, God willing, find enough of it to at least show thatwe
have an ancient structure,’ he said. `If we find a great big structure
up there that fits the dimensions, and if there are compartments in
there, and it’s ancient – What else could it be, way up there,
thousands of feet in the air?’ Work also must be done leading up to
the expedition.

Price estimated that the team needs to raise about $60,000 to pay for
permission to use the site, to buy the necessary machinery and to fund
about two months of work on location.

Bright said a discovery would `mean so much to so many, many people
worldwide.’

`Keep your ear to the road, so to speak, this summer,’ he
said. `Because there will be discovery. The only thing that’s holding
us back is to finance the machinery that we need.’
