BAKU: MP: Mehmet Ali Birand’s position against not only Azerbaijan

Trend, Azerbaijan
May 1 2010

MP: Mehmet Ali Birand’s position directed against not only Azerbaijan
but Turkey
01.05.2010 15:06
Azerbaijan, Baku, May 1 / Trend M. Aliyev /

"I do not think Mehmet Ali Birand real Turk. It seems he has mixed
blood. His position is directed not only against Azerbaijan, but also
against Turkey," Azerbaijani MP, editor-in-chief of "Azerbaijan"
newspaper, Bakhtiyar Sadigov told Trend.

He said that Birand’s actions testify that this person is sponsored by
the Armenians. He achieves recognition of the "Armenian genocide" with
the support of his patrons. His activity poses a threat to the whole
Turkey, he said.

Strengthening of the Turkish-Azerbaijani relations, strong rebuff of
the two countries towards pressure from certain centers of power, the
basic position of the fraternal countries cause serious concern of
Turkey’s and Azerbaijani opponents, MP said.

Turkish journalist Birand conducts anti-Azerbaijani propaganda for a
long period. Azerbaijani press responded by sound arguments on the
author’s claim of an article published April 15 in the newspaper
"Hurriyyet". The following article dated April 28 shows that Birand
was instructed to conduct "revision" of Azerbaijani-Turkish relations,
make a possible blow on fraternal relations, Sadigov said.

Any action against Azerbaijan, until there is the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, and especially when the Armenians are trying to achieve
recognition of the "Armenian genocide" is directed against Turkey, MP
said.

"If he supports the Armenians, knowing about it, it means that he is
an enemy of Turkey," Sadigov said.

Editor-in-chief of Azerbaijani newspaper regretted that Turkish
intellectuals, people who love Azerbaijan, provide the platform for
such a man, thus contributing to Birand’s free briefing by Armenia.

"Turkey has become a powerful state, capable to resist U.S. pressure.
Today, the friendship of Turkey and Azerbaijan is particularly
important. We must act together in all issues. We have successfully
withstood the test of history, proving by own blood, that no cunning
plan can not separate the peoples of Azerbaijan and Turkey ", Sadigov
said.

NO ONE CAN RUIN A STATE, UNLESS IT IS ALREADY ON BRINK OF RUIN, ACNIC EXPERT MANVEL SARGSYAN SAYS

NOYAN TAPAN
APRIL 30, 2010
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, APRIL 30, NOYAN TAPAN. The Armenian Center for National
and International Studies (ACNIS) convened a discussion entitled
"The Recent Unrest in Kyrgyzstan: Are There Lessons for Armenia?" on
April 29. ACNIS Administrative Director Karapet Kalenchian said that
depsite the fact that Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest post-Soviet
countries, it has an important geopolitical position, and in this
respect the change of the authorities in this country is of concern
for other countries in the region.

ACNIS senior expert Manvel Sargsyan said the events in Kyrgyzstan
caused serious alarm in the whole post-Soviet territory, which is
also evident from various high-level opinions and comments voiced
in connection with these events. In his words, the Russian president
addressed the problem several times, expressing concern and even making
forecasts that such events may also take place in other countries. "The
presidents of Belarus and Georgia made statements.

Even the Armenian police chief rudely warned society "not to harbor
such thoughts", the Armenian obmudsman also made a statement," M.
Sargsyan noted.

In his opinion, all this shows that everybody is concerned about the
Kyrgyz events because they are not a colored revolution and have no
relation to elections. M. Sargsyan said that following these events,
both the state system and society collapsed in Kyrgyzstan.

He underlined that no one can ruin a state, unless it is already on
the brink of ruin. According to him, what happened in Kyrgyzstan was a
protest, a "riot" rather than a political process because "the forces
that have now become the formal authorities have little influence on
that country and its society".

The Museum of Jewish Heritage, located on the tip of Manhattan in
Battery Park, on the shores of Ellis and Liberty Islands, served as
the setting for the honoring of Ambassador Henry Morgenthau, Sr. and
his family, including Robert M. Morgenthau, chairman of the Museum,
by Armenian Genocide survivors and the Knights and Daughters of Vartan
on Wednesday afternoon, April 21.

Robert Morgenthau talking to survivors Four Armenian Genocide
survivors, residents of the Armenian Home in Flushing, N.Y., met
Robert Morgenthau in front of the museum’s special exhibition, which
chronicles U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Henry Morgenthau’s
tireless efforts to stop what he termed "the murder of a nation"
in his autobiography-an expression tantamount to "genocide," a word
not invented until 1944 by Raphael Lemkin who was reflecting on the
attempted extermination of the Armenians.

Dr. Mary Papazian, the senior vice-president and provost of Lehman
College, City University of New York, made opening remarks on behalf of
Armenians worldwide. She said that the survivors and Robert Morgenthau
had come together "in a special way, joining the present and the
past, in an affirmation of the tragedy which befell the Armenians
and Ambassador Morgenthau’s efforts to ameliorate their suffering."

Dr. Papazian introduced each of the survivors, including Charlotte
Kechejian, Oronik Eminian, Arsalo Dadir, and Perouz Kalousdian,
and briefly told their stories of escaping during the genocide and
eventually making their way to the United States. She noted that
Ambassador Morgenthau worked on behalf of Armenian survivors after
the genocide by supporting the efforts of the Near East Relief,
authorized by the U.S. government. Papazian noted that he became the
"voice to these victims."

Ambassador Morgenthau returned to the United States in 1916 and
published his memoir Ambassador Morgenthau’s Story, describing the
atrocities committed by the Young Turk dictatorship in the Ottoman
Empire.

Among the official documents on display is the noted 1915 telegram
where he warned the U.S. State Department that a "campaign of race
extermination" is being carried out under the pretext of putting down
a revolt.

"The exhibition behind us celebrates the contributions of this
remarkable man, a man of principal, who believed in humanity above
politics," said Papazian. "We’re here to honor the contributions
your family’s made and express our deepest gratitude and thanks from
Armenians worldwide."

Papazian and Haig Deranian, the grand commander of the Knights of
Vartan, presented Robert Morgenthau with a plaque.

"I’m very proud to receive this recognition for my grandfather’s role
in struggling against the murder of a nation," said Robert Morgenthau,
90. "It was a case where criminals took over government and proceeded
to exterminate all Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire. Obviously,
they did not succeed."

"Armenians have good memories," he continued. "They remember who their
friends are. I thank you for this honor on behalf of my grandfather
and my family."
