Asbarez: Third Republic

Garen Yegparian

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

No, this piece’s title is not a veiled reference to Nazi Germay or one of French statehood’s manifestations. It’s about the Republic of Armenia and the U.S.

The Armenian reference is probably obvious. The first republic was the one established in 1918, the second is the Soviet one, and the third is the current state we have that is muddling forward through the transition to its most recently adopted constitution.

But, according to Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson in their August 15, 2017 “Foreign Policy” piece titled “It’s Time to Found a New Republic” even the U.S. may be on the verge of doing much the same thing. You might remember that Acemoglu got some play in the Armenian media in the recent past as one of the ten most cited economists. His interests seem to fall on the cusp between economics and politics and how that interplay impacts people.

It is an article well worth reading, but for our present purposes, here’s an exceedingly brief, almost unjust, summary of what is presented therein. Acemoglu and Johnson argue that the U.S. is living through a phase of its life that is very analogous to the late 1800s-early1900s. Back then, new technologies were leading to huge advances in productivity but also concentrating more wealth into fewer people’s hands. This money was finding its way into the country’s political system and leading to a government that was acting not in everyone’s interests but that of the wealthiest (the “robber barons”). Then, a reform movement was born and after a few decades of struggle resulted in a political-economic system that constrained the power of the wealthy and enabled the blessings of technological advances to be more equally shared, creating what we all now recognize as the current American system, and, effectively, a “second” republic.

It certainly seems like an apt comparison to make. Today’s new or, disruptive (to use the vogue jargon), technologies focus on data rather than oil and steel, but their impacts are the same. Who but the very few do not feel financially squeezed, politically disenfranchised, and disgusted with the level of governmental influence money can buy these days?

This reality is creating much rancor and dissatisfaction, to the extent that upon Trump’s election as president, California’s secession from the republic was getting some straight-faced consideration. The same level of dissatisfaction is evident in Armenia. There, it manifests as an exodus of the working-age population in search of opportunities elsewhere. Both countries must face up to these challenges and find solutions. For the U.S., this will come in the form of a new grand arrangement that will once again, effectively, if not formally, create a new, “third,” republic. For Armenia, it will happen as the consolidation of the third republic into one of laws and some semblance of equity and justice, ending the torture caused by the remnants of its Soviet past and the political-economic power concentrated in the hands of what are called “oligarchs” – the equivalents of American corporate titans.

Thus, by an interesting coincidence of political and economic evolution, Armenians living in the U.S. have a golden opportunity. By engaging in the proper (re)democratization of both countries, we can contribute to both of those processes by being the “middle-men” who can learn from the quirks of each country to inform and assist the efforts of the other in this long and challenging effort.

I realize this is a VERY compact presentation and, as a consequence, following the ideas presented may be difficult. That is why I want to mention a second time that the original Acemoglu/Johnson article is something you ought to read. It will enable a better understanding of the matter at hand.

Let’s get involved with these processes and become a US-Armenia bridge.

Levon Aronian ends in a draw

Armenia’s strongest chess player Levon Aronian again ended in a draw at World Cup Championship 1/32 final second round.

Our chess player, who was playing with white pieces, wasn’t able to surprise Chinese chess player Hou Yifan. After the 34th step the sides tied the game.

The chess game ended in 1:1. Tomorrow to decide the winner the sides will hold a tie-break.

Lord Ara Darzi Joins Aurora Prize Selection Committee

Lord Ara Darzi

YEREVAN—Lord Ara Darzi has been appointed to the Aurora Prize Selection Committee, the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative reported.

The Selection Committee is comprised of a select group of humanitarians, human right activists and former heads of state, and is chaired by Academy-award winning actor and director, and a humanitarian in his own right, George Clooney.

Professor Darzi is Director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London. He also holds the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College London, and the Institute of Cancer Research and is Executive Chair of the World Innovation Summit for Health in Qatar. He is a Consultant Surgeon at Imperial College Hospital NHS Trust and the Royal Marsden NHS Trust.  In 2002, he was knighted for his services in medicine and surgery, and was introduced to the United Kingdom’s House of Lords as Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham in 2007. He has been a member of the Privy Council since June 2009 and was awarded the Order of Merit in January 2016.

Vartan Gregorian, Co-Founder of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and President of Carnegie Corporation of New York, welcomed Lord Darzi. “We are delighted to have Lord Darzi join our selection committee. He is a man of great integrity, distinction, and tremendous accomplishments who has dedicated his life and career to doing good,” he said. “The selection process and the Aurora Gratitude in Action movement will greatly benefit from Lord Darzi’s experience and knowledge. He understands the value of good public policy and has invested his energies in providing for the common good.”

“I am extremely excited and deeply touched. I look forward to the great responsibility and opportunity I will have as a part of the Aurora Prize Selection Committee to celebrate the work of brave and committed humanitarians,” said Lord Darzi. “I am looking forward to receiving the nominations for the 2018 Aurora Prize and learning about the inspiring stories of modern day heroes and changemakers.”

Lord Darzi’s family has had experience with life-saving heroes. His family was from the northeastern city of Erzurum, Turkey. His father’s grandfather and his sons were executed by Ottoman forces during the Genocide. Lord Darzi’s paternal grandmother and great grandmother were the family’s only survivors. “They walked barefoot for weeks from Erzurum to northern Iraq and ended up in Mosul in Iraq, thanks to the help of a friend of my father’s grandfather,” explained Lord Darzi to Aurora’s 100 LIVES project. “So, I understand personally the significance of ‘gratitude in action’. This is a very meaningful way for me to publicly advocate for the need to recognize humanitarian kindness and generosity everywhere.”

Lord Darzi joins current Aurora Prize Selection Committee members including Nobel Laureates Oscar Arias, Shirin Ebadi and Leymah Gbowee; former president of Ireland Mary Robinson; former president of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo; human rights activist Hina Jilani; President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group and former foreign minister of Australia, Gareth Evans; Vartan Gregorian; and Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian George Clooney.

The nomination period for the 2018 Aurora Prize is still open. Anyone can nominate a candidate who they believe has risked their life, health, freedom, reputation or livelihood to make an exceptional impact on preserving human life and advancing humanitarian causes. A description of the Prize criteria and selection process can be found here. Nominations for the 2018 Aurora Prize will close on September 8, 2017.

The finalists will be announced in Armenia on April 24, 2018, when the world commemorates the Genocide of Armenians in 1915.  The Aurora Prize was established on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors.

The $1 million Aurora Prize will be awarded for the third time on June 10, 2018 in Armenia. The laureate is invited to share $1million with organizations which inspire their work. The award ceremony is a culmination of the weekend of special events that will take place on June 8-10, 2018. Pre-eminent humanitarians, academics, philanthropists, human rights defenders, government officials, journalists and business leaders from around the world will gather for the purpose of galvanizing action to address today’s most pressing humanitarian challenges and to celebrate the best of humanity.

Ismail Serageldin: "We do not need Karabakh war – we need peace"

The Global Young Leaders Forum, held in Baku with the support of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, was attended by many influential politicians from all over the world. The director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center Ismail Serageldin told Vestnik Kavkaza about the results of the forum and modern processes in the East.

– How do you assess the results of the Baku Global Young Leaders Forum?

– The Nizami Ganjavi International Center has a tradition to organize large conferences with participation of high-ranking people from all over the world, including current and former presidents of different countries. This time a very interesting event was held: we tried to establish contact with the leaders of the future, young people from different countries, whom we consider to be global leaders in their areas of activity. It was a dialogue between generations – between experienced but young in their hearts people and young people, who will gain experience and become global leaders. And this event was very successful. I believe that those young people with whom we have been communicating these days have a very promising future: they can go into business, to the government, to any sphere of life.

– Can the young leaders become those who finally solve world problems?

– I hope most of these problems will be resolved much earlier. We should not leave all the problems to the next generation.

– Do you agree with the opinion of some experts that now there is a war in the Middle East between the civilizations of the East and the West?

– I totally disagree. The is a war going on between Muslims and extremists. At the moment, most of the victims of terrorists in the Middle East are Muslims, and almost 100% of those who fight on the ground against militants in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere are also Muslims. The extremely turbulent situation has spread to the West as well, but if we look at at the scale of the ongoing battles objectively, these are battles between Muslims and extremists. So there is no question of any confrontation between the West and the East. Yes, some say, "You are an ally of the West, you are not a real Muslim," but that's just rhetoric. In fact, there are much more important problems in the Middle East now than the discourse about the East-West confrontation.

– Which of these problems, in your estimation, should be solved in the first place?

– I think that all global players must recognize that we should work with the population and should not ignore the fact that up to 50% of the population in a number of countries have become internally displaced persons. We must strive to find a solution that would bring peace and security to these countries. It will not be easy. Last year I published an article in Newsweek titled 'Crafting Stability in the Middle East', where I proposed a negotiating model and other conditions, which would help us to achieve, if not the best solution, then at least a stable one that will allow people to return to their homes and become ordinary citizens.

– Is this approach applicable to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict?

– I am convinced that problems like the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should be resolved through diplomacy and international laws, especially since there are a number of UN Security Council resolutions on this issue. We do not need wars – we need peace, because there is no development without peace, there is no happiness and well-being of people. Security cannot exist without peace, peace cannot exist without judicature, and judicature cannot exist without justice. The best way to achieve this is to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.

Sports: Henrikh Mkhitaryan finally thriving at Manchester United after slow start

ESPN FC

Aug 22 2017

The FC panel debate whether or not Manchester United are the real deal.

Yes, it's only Swansea and West Ham United. And yet the statistics are impressive — two 4-0 wins in Manchester United's first two Premier League games, with goals from four different scorers. Lying just beneath these numbers, too, is a hugely encouraging figure for United supporters, which is that Henrikh Mkhitaryan has provided four assists.

It has been an interesting year for the Armenian playmaker, and that is putting it mildly. If, last summer, you had argued he would be his team's danger man, many would have said something like: "You know, that's completely possible. He was the leading assist provider in Germany in his last season at Borussia Dortmund, and he'll thrive in such a gifted attack."

However, if you had argued something similar just four months into his time at Old Trafford, many more would have looked at you in disbelief, mixed with perhaps a little concern, that he might be sold. Not now, though. Mkhitaryan looks as central to United's attack as Kevin De Bruyne does at Manchester City.

The striking thing is that Mkhitaryan was not necessarily a continual threat in either of these opening matches. His creativity has come in bursts, as has mostly been his way since he arrived at United, but it has come at crucial moments. On both occasions, he has supplied his team's second goal for Romelu Lukaku — a combination which will be of great value in the months ahead. He is patient in possession and decisive when needed — a marked contrast from his early performances for United, where he often squandered the ball in promising areas. That trait can be put down in some part to a desperation to impress and cost him so severely in his derby debut against Manchester City last September.

Of course, Mkhitaryan, should he go on to thrive at Old Trafford, would not be the first United star to bounce back from a disastrous full debut. Patrice Evra had a horror show in January 2006 against Manchester City, a 3-1 defeat where Sir Alex Ferguson found the Frenchman's performance so numbingly awful that he was withdrawn at half-time.

Indeed, in an uncanny symmetry, Mkhitaryan was also taken off after a torrid 45 minutes against City last season. Evra, though, is probably viewed by most people as having a much tougher mentality than the Armenian, who spent months out of the starting lineup. Yet that might be unfair — it is no small feat to make a career in Ukraine, Germany and now England, three countries with vastly different cultures. And most important, the attacking midfielder has long since found both form and favour under his new manager.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has four assists for the season already.

Look at the brilliance of his improvised finish in last season's Europa League final, a goal which sealed a 2-0 win over Ajax and qualification for the Champions League. Or his positioning in the United team, where, despite his pace in wide areas, he operates more commonly as the No.10, with Juan Mata cutting in from the right flank on to his left foot. His tactical deployment demonstrates that Mourinho trusts him.

Perhaps this was always Mourinho's plan. Whatever the case, it is now certainly working. Swansea and West Ham are two of the more limited teams United will face this season, but they are sides Mourinho's men have previously struggled to dispatch. Mkhitaryan's growing importance to his team has given them the fluidity in attack to break down some of the most cautious defences. Of particular note is the chemistry he has struck up with Paul Pogba, with whom he supplied a pass for United's third. Pogba was readily criticised for not scoring enough goals last season — part of which can be attributed to his continual clattering of the woodwork with shots from distance — but this year it seems as though Pogba will have the chance to run through on goal substantially more.

Mkhitaryan has also been aided by the arrival of Lukaku, whose transfer deserves an article all its own. The intelligence of Lukaku's movement has given Mkhitaryan many more yards in which to work. Crucially, too, this new factor means Mkhitaryan is just one more player whom opponents see arriving at speed through the middle of the pitch. Too often last year, he was given the main responsibility of carrying the ball forward at pace. Now he does not need to lead the counterattack so much — he is free to go about orchestrating it, a role in which he is far more dangerous.

So far, so good — with the obvious caveat that there are far sterner tests to come. Mkhitaryan, though, has already shown that he can create chances for this team in a variety of ways — set pieces, dribbles and one-touch passing. Despite the array of attacking tools at Mourinho's disposal, the Armenian may just prove to be the sharpest of them all.

Armenia's Levon Aronian wins Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz

Author Floyd Cook

The 15-time world champ temporarily came out of 12 years of retirement to take on a much younger generation of masters at the Rapid and Blitz tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.

Vietnamese top chess player Le Quang Liem lost to legendary chess player Russian-Croatian Garry Kasparov in the rapid category at the ongoing St. Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament in the United States on August 16.

Aronian secured a first place finish in the tournament with a combined score of 24.5 points. Sergey Karjakin (Russia) became the victor of the Blitz competition 13․5 points, with Levon Aronian taking the second place with 12․5 points.

Anand and Kasparov are by far the oldest two players in the 150000 Dollars prize money event and both would like to finish on a positive note.

On the other hand, Kasparov started the day with a loss against Karjakin, but in the remaining rounds, scored over Perez, Nakamura and Caruana and drew against the rest.

The mind, it is precisely this that is failed to Garry Kasparov, who has yet attempted in the course of the tournament to intensify their aggressiveness. Sergey Karjakin (Rus, 16); 4.

Two points for awarded for a win in rapid format, one for a draw and none for a loss. Ian Nepomniachtchi (10 + 10) 20; 5-7.
