Pope Benedict’s historic reference is to enlighten Muslims than enraging them

For 14 centuries, Muslims’ way of thinking and believing has been
controlled by a number of unsubstantiated religious taboos, which
if broken the perpetrator gets punished for, including by cutting
off the limbs and beheading. These taboos are the product of mere
interpretations of various Quranic verses and prophet Muhammad’s
sayings ‘over a long time span’ by Islamic religious authorities of
different sects and motivations’.

Depicting prophet Muhammad and describing his character qualities
have been viewed as critical parts of these taboos. Last year’s
Danish cartoon episode, and the recent reference of Pope Benedict
that Muhammad condoned violent means to spread Islam religion are
solid evidence that even non-Muslims are expected to abide by Islamic
rules of not daring such taboos.

It is unfortunate that even at these highly modern times when human’s
free will, independent intellectual thinking, and liberal imagination
are proven to be responsible for all the scientific, technological
and artistic wonderful achievements that serve all humanity, there
are those who in the name of Muhammad and Allah continue to abide by
some obsolete and inhuman mentality which has and continues to cost
mankind huge numbers of lives and tremendous sufferings.

The Armenian genocide on the hands of Muslim Turks during the latest
years of the Ottoman Empire (which later on prompted the Jewish
holocaust by the Nazis); Muslim Arab campaign of ‘Quranic’ Anfal by
Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq in the late 1980s to genocide the
Kurds; The tragic event of 9/11 in the US as planned and executed by
Al-Qaeda; Continued suicide bombings and revenge killings that has
been consuming thousands of innocent lives and causing huge levels
of property devastations ‘every month’ in Iraq and Afghanistan are
all committed by fellow Muslims, in the name of Islam and its idols
such as Allah and prophet Mohammad. By any stretch of imagination of
any human being with minimum capacity for logical thinking and human
compassion, these acts are all considered to be hideously criminal
and anti any peaceful and viable spirituality.

It must be quite difficult for non-Muslims not to believe that such
violent acts by some Muslim groups does not receive the tacit approval
from the main stream of the Muslim world, especially in the absence of
any known condemnation by the Muslim masses, anywhere in the Islamic
countries. If the exercise of violence in the name of Islam is not part
of the religious conviction of the Muslims and it is exercised only by
a small percentage of fanatics who don’t represent the Islamic faith,
then why the majority of the Muslims accept to stand by and let such
fanatics discredit them and their religion?

Many simpleminded Muslims may interpret Pope Benedict’s expressed
intent as anti Islam. But the truth may be quite the opposite. Like
many logical individuals who are concerned about the latest tide of
Islamic violence and brutality in the name of their prophet and Allah,
the pope may have decided to point to a potential misgiving which can
only be understood and averted if it gets a worthwhile attention. He
may have intended to generate an inter-religious debate both to reveal
the good and the ugly in Islam religion.

Being a devoted Christian with a wealth of knowledge about spirituality
in historic and realistic terms, he is a man of goodwill and
determination to do mankind the best he can. He must be full aware
of the extent of the damage the rigid nature of the Islamic faith
has on the intellectual state of the average Muslims.

Being for tolerance and compassion to bring mankind closer together
in cooperation and understanding, it is in the core of the spiritual
faith of the Pope to identify and speak about the ills of mankind,
with violence of any nature being one of them.

Thanks to the reasonable and necessary levels of tolerance and
open-mindedness, the quality of human life in the Christian world is
much better than that of the Muslim world. While peace, acceptance,
fairness, kindness, cooperation and understanding form some of the core
virtues and disciplines in the lives of Christian societies, violence,
repression, vengeance, controlling of others lives and properties by
force, are the types of virtues and disciplines that are nurtured by
state and religious authorities in the Muslim countries with Turkey,
Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia being just a few notorious examples.

To those moderate Muslims who have earned their individual pride
from their logical and free thinking and analysis, it is time that
they use their words and pens to speak out of the truth as it can be
substantiated by rational thinking and behaviour than by primitive
religious moulding of their spirituality and believes.

There is just no way for false and fake believes to stand against the
might of the sum of mankind’s independent intellectual thinking and
reasoning. The sooner for the Muslims to recognise the weaknesses of
their religion, the better is the chance of their survival in harmony
with others and in pride and dignity. A religion is only as good as
being able to enlighten mankind to lead a peaceful, fulfilling and a
happy life. If not dealt with effectively, let there be no doubt that
the existing strain of primitive taboos in Islam religion continues
to rob off Muslims from exercising their humanity fully and honourably.

London Fashion Week Opens With Celebs, Catwalks And Controversy Over

LONDON FASHION WEEK OPENS WITH CELEBS, CATWALKS AND CONTROVERSY OVER SKINNY MODELS
By Katie Fretland, Associated Press Writer

Ultrathin models walked the runways at London’s Fashion Week on Monday,
opening the weeklong event with a clear rejection of arguments that
waiflike young women should not be permitted to showcase designs.

Despite a ban on superskinny models imposed by Spanish organizers at
their fashion week in Madrid, slinky women in London were ready to
flaunt the spring and summer collections of designers such as Julien
Macdonald, John Rocha and Zandra Rhodes.

The British capital was hoping to recapture a bit of bling and ditch
its reputation as the poor cousin of more glamorous events in New York,
Paris and Milan, Italy.

"We are not a traditional capital for fashion, but we are a very
creative crucible," said Stuart Rose, chairman of the British Fashion
Council, which organizes London’s twice-yearly Fashion Week.

Paris-based Garen Demerdjian, a Lebanese-Armenian designer, presented
a layered look with shorts and skirts over long leggings, high cinched
belts and leather jackets.

His models, stone-faced with tangled hair, walked slowly down the
catwalk sporting hues of brown, green, apricot, black and silky white
amid flashing lights and trancelike music.

Later, John Rocha presented a collection of cropped cargo pants,
silk shirts and parkas in shades of black, ivory, stone and khaki.

On Tuesday, designer Bella Freud was set to relaunch iconic 1960s
label Biba, pioneer of caftans and flamboyant scarves.

A-list stars including Beyonce and Alicia Keys were expected to attend
the Emporio Armani catwalk show Thursday. U2’s Bono was expected to
be on hand to help launch Armani’s Red collection, which will give
a portion of its profits to help fight AIDS in Africa.

Kate Moss added star power by sitting in the front row at a pre-event
show for British retailer Topshop on Sunday, alongside its billionaire
owner Philip Green.

A debate over whether models were too thin has raised London Fashion
Week in the headlines, with a government minister’s calls to follow
Madrid’s lead and ban extremely thin models from the catwalk.

"The fashion industry’s promotion of beauty as meaning stick-thin
is damaging to young girls’ self-image and to their health," Culture
Secretary Tessa Jowell said Saturday.

Rose dismissed calls for a ban as "a knee-jerk reaction," but said
the debate was a legitimate one and that he would discuss the issue
with colleagues. Fashion Week canceled its opening photo shoot to
avoid giving the issue more publicity.

"I think that it’s a debate that will happen all in good time, and
all opinions are welcome," said supermodel Erin O’Connor.

The event, which runs through Friday, has long been known as a venue
for seeing cutting-edge work from creative, young British designers,
while the big fashion houses tend to showcase their wares in New York,
Paris or Milan.

This year, though, there is an air of excitement around the
spring/summer collections from designers including Jasper Conran,
Paul Smith and Betty Jackson, and new talents such as 23-year-old
Christopher Kane.

ARKADY GHUKASYAN: NOTHING OUTSIDE THE OSCE MG FORMAT WILL BENEIT NK

Public Radio of Armenia
Sept 18 2006

Any format of negotiations over the settlement of the Karabakh issue
outside the frames of the OSCE Minsk Group will not benefit Nagorno
Karabakh, NKR President Arkady Ghukasyan told the journalists.

In his words, Azerbaijan’s latest activity outside the Minsk Group
is a recurrent attempt to divert the attention of the international
community. "Nagorno Karabakh is ready to hold negotiations with
Azerbaijan in any format. However, if we aspire for resolution of the
conflict, we should stay loyal to the OSCE Minsk Group format," NKR
President noted. Turning to the topic of the Azerbaijani territories
under NKR control, he advised the Azerbaijani side not to forget
that Armenian Shahumyan region and part of Martakert are still under
Azeri control.

Welcome to the House of Chaos

By Jen Wainwright in Paris
Published: 17 September 2006

The village of Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d’Or, near Lyons,
has several historical monuments of which its citizens
are rightly proud. But they are distinctly less happy
with the Demeure du Chaos (Home of Chaos), an open-air
"museum" created by eccentric resident Thierry
Ehrmann.

Since 1999, Mr Ehrmann, 44, has developed the
two-and-a-half-acre site into an apocalyptic work of
art. The grounds of the once-elegant house are
dominated by an enormous reconstruction of the attacks
on the World Trade Centre. A helicopter lies destroyed
in the front garden. Portraits of Osama bin Laden
adorn the outer walls. A swimming pool is filled with
water the colour of blood.

Inside the 17th-century house, the walls are also
decorated with scenes of chaos. "There we have
Chernobyl, here the Armenian massacre, over there
Guantanamo Bay," Mr Ehrmann explains.

What is it for? "When we settled here we realised we
were in grave danger of becoming bourgeois," he said.
"All that remains of the bourgeois condition should be
drowned in a state of permanent warfare."

The house, which is regularly opened to the public,
provokes strong reactions. Some love it, some hate it.
Mayor Pierre Dumont wanted it demolished, claiming it
was in breach of local planning laws. But after two
years of legal wrangling, the Lyons appeal court
rejected the Mayor’s complaints. Three appeal judges
decided the site had artistic merit and was therefore
partially exempt from planning laws.

An earlier judgment that parts of the museum should be
destroyed was set aside. However, Mr Ehrmann was fined
200,000 (£135,000) for exceeding legal height limits.
Mayor Dumont was disappointed. "What has become of the
law if what is forbidden for some is permissible for
others?" he said.

Mr Ehrmann, founder of a company specialising in the
distribution of legal databases, is said to be the
307th richest man in France. He was jubilant despite
the heavy fine, claiming that he had achieved a
"victory over obscurantism".

OSCE Concerned About Violence Against Media In Armenia

OSCE CONCERNED ABOUT VIOLENCE AGAINST MEDIA IN ARMENIA

Associated Press
Sept 12 2006

A leading European organization expressed concern about violence
against journalists and intimidation of the media in Armenia,
where the editor of an opposition newspaper was beaten last week by
unidentified assailants.

The Yerevan office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe said it is "deeply concerned over recent incidents of violence
and intimidation against local journalists which have obstructed their
professional duties and infringed upon the freedom of expression."

In a statement, the OSCE cited the Sept. 6 beating of Ovannes
Galadzhian, the editor of the newspaper Iravunk, who said he was
attacked by two men outside his home. The chairman of the paper’s
editorial board, Gaik Babukhanian, said he suspected the attack was
prompted by the paper’s criticism of the authorities.

He said the paper had also faced economic and other forms of pressure.

The OSCE statement also said that a freelance journalist, Gagik
Shamshian, was threatened and abused on July 12.

It called on Armenian law enforcement agencies to properly investigate
such cases and punish the perpetrators, as well as to "undertake
prompt measures to ensure the safety of media professionals in order
to promote freedom of expression in the country."

Critics say President Robert Kocharian has violently cracked down on
dissent in the former Soviet republic, allowed corruption to flourish
and done little to improve the lot of impoverished Armenia’s 3.3
million people.

ANKARA: Coskun: Our Government Is Determined To Do What It Takes To

COSKUN: OUR GOVERNMENT IS DETERMINED TO DO WHAT IT TAKES TO ADHERE TO THE E.U.

Turkish Press
Sept 11 2006

ISTANBUL – "Our government is determined to do what it takes to
become a full member of the European Union (EU)," said Ali Coskun,
Turkish Minister of Industry & Trade, on Thursday.

Coskun was a guest speaker at a symposium organized by the Istanbul
Trade University on "Turkey and EU Membership Process."

Ali Coskun indicated that Turkey’s ultimate goal is to join the EU as
a full member. "Screening meetings for 25 topics have been completed.

We plan to accomplish screening of 35 topics by October 13th, 2006,"
remarked Coskun.

Meanwhile, another participant, EU Harmonization Committee Chairman
Yasar Yakis has stated that entry negotiations with the EU are going
on successfully at technical level.

Referring to the ‘Turkey Report’ made public by the European
Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee two days ago, Yakis said that
"the topics regarding the so-called Armenian, Pontus and Syrian
genocides cannot be included in entry negotiations process. We are
hoping that the EP General Assembly will remove those topics when it
votes the report later this year."

Oppositionist Implicates Sarkisian In Editor’s Beating

OPPOSITIONIST IMPLICATES SARKISIAN IN EDITOR’S BEATING
By Hovannes Shoghikian and Emil Danielyan

Radio Liberty, Czech Rep.
Sept 11 2006

The leader of an opposition party that controls a leading Armenian
newspaper said at the weekend that he suspects Defense Minister
Serzh Sarkisian of being behind last week’s reported beating of its
editor-in-chief.

Hovannes Galajian of the "Iravunk" bi-weekly and his staff believe the
incident was the result of their hard-hitting coverage of Armenia’s
leaders and their loyalists. They have implicitly described Sarkisian
as one of its possible organizers, pointing to a recent "Iravunk"
article that attacked and derided the powerful minister.

Sarkisian dismissed such suggestions on Thursday, saying that Galajian
is too insignificant a person to incur his ire. "I don’t fight against
or punish wretched people. I just ignore them," he said.

According to Hrant Khachatrian of the Union for Constitutional
Rights (SIM) party, which founded "Iravunk" more than 15 years ago,
the remarks only reinforced his suspicion that Sarkisian may have
ordered the violence. "We had a number of equally valid theories
relating to Hovannes Galajian’s discourse against both economic and
political criminal elements," Khachatrian told journalists. "But
after Serzh Sarkisian’s reaction I began to have more suspicions
[about his involvement.]"

Galajian claims to have been beaten up by two unknown men outside
his Yerevan home on Wednesday. He says the attackers resembled the
notoriously violent bodyguards of wealthy businessmen close to the
government. They are usually beefy and have very short haircuts.

The reported attack, which is being investigated by the police, has
been widely condemned by Armenian human rights groups, journalist
associations and opposition parties. The country’s human rights
ombudsman, Armen Harutiunian, has also joined in the chorus of
condemnations, saying that the law-enforcement authorities are not
doing enough to prevent periodical violence against local journalists.

Sarkisian’s contemptuous description of the "Iravunk" editor prompted
on Saturday a scathing commentary by "Haykakan Zhamanak," another
paper highly critical of the government. In a front-page editorial, the
popular daily said Armenia’s second most powerful man should look for
"wretched people" in his entourage, rather than the media. "As for us
[journalists,] the only argument in support of our wretchedness is
that we tolerate [Sarkisian] and the likes of him at the helm of our
state," it snapped.

Georgy Petrossian: NKR Ready To Receive Another OSCE Mission

GEORGY PETROSSIAN: NKR READY TO RECEIVE ANOTHER OSCE MISSION

ArmRadio.am
11.09.2006 17:55

Commenting on the UN General Assembly Resolution on Fires NKR
Foreign Minister Georgy Petrossian’s said in particular, "On the
whole taking into account the final result, namely an intention to
send the OSCE Mission with support of the UN experts to the region
to assess the long-term and short-term threats, which can lead to
ecologic catastrophe in the region, the Resolution can be considered
acceptable for the NKR. Moreover, it is necessary to emphasize
that this process is a logical continuation of Nagorno Karabakh
authorities’ initiative. The NKR authorities were extremely alarmed
at the situation with the fires as those inflammations caused damage
to the agriculture of our republic. In connection with this the NKR
MFA sent a note to the Office of the Personal Representative of the
OSCE Chairman-in-Office with an urgent request to conduct a crisis
monitoring in the area bordering with Azerbaijan. Two weeks late the
OSCE Mission conducted a series of monitorings, which resulted in the
report of Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, which
refuted the accusations of the Azerbaijani side on alleged burnings
of settlements in the NKR security zone. Thus, the NKR authorities
were the first to address the OSCE for a dispatch of a monitoring
group to the region, which was passed over in silence by the OSCE
Minsk Group Co-Chairmen in their report, which was made public at the
General Assembly’s session. However, if the report of the OSCE high
rank needs additional confirmation, – we are ready to receive a new
Mission of the OSCE to discredit Azerbaijani myths once more."

The Minister said that the position of this issue in the UN itself
and some formulas of the Resolution are not acceptable. The attempts
to transfer the issues, which are to be solved by the OSCE Minsk
Group, to the UN cannot promote the advance of negotiation process
but only postpone the possible prospect of the Nagorno Karabakh
conflict settlement.

Georgy Pertrossian considers that the fact that the given Resolution,
namely its contents is a result of consensus between Armenia and
Azerbaijan – rare phenomenon for recent years, especially under the
conditions of the absence of confidence between the parties, is worthy
of notice and it can be only welcomed. We consider that such projects
are to be discussed with participation of all three parties to the
conflict in order to avoid problems in the course of implementation
of accepted decisions especially because these decisions concern the
territories, which are exceptionally under the control of the Nagorno
Karabakh republic’s authorities.
