/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Two people were shot dead and several were wounded
Tuesday during a Kurdish demonstration in southeastern Turkey on the
fifth day of unrest triggered by a court ban on the country’s main
Kurdish party.

The violence in Bulanik town, in the mainly Kurdish province of Mus,
came after protestors attacked shops during a march to denounce the
banning of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), the town’s mayor Ziya
Akkaya told.

A shopkeeper, armed with an assault rifle, opened fire on the crowd
after the windows of his shop were broken and his vehicle was torched
by the protestors.

Seven other people were wounded in the attack, the province’s deputy
governor Ali Edip Budan told, adding that the assailant was detained.

There have been daily protests in the southeast and east of Turkey –
as well as major western towns with large numbers of Kurdish migrants
– since Friday when the constitutional court banned the DTP, AFP
reported.

about Darchinyan. That’s how he is and that’s how he’ll be. If they can
make the fight happen that’s fine. I’m well ready for this fight and
I’m actually excited to see that the fight will happen," said Donaire.

ARMENIA-TURKEY RECONCILIATION MAY BE SIGN OF DETERIORATION IN US-TURKISH TIES: HURRIYET

NEWS.am

"Failure to implement the Ankara-Yerevan normalization deal will
likely strengthen ‘genocide bills’ in US Congress," Turkish Hurriyet
daily reports.

"Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s talks with U.S. President
Barack Obama at the White House earlier this week have mostly been
viewed as a success by analysts. However, an uphill reconciliation
process between Turkey and Armenia may be the sign of a creeping
deterioration in U.S.-Turkish ties next year," the source reads.

"The issue at the root of the problem is the unresolved
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Turkey’s
close friend and ally. Erdogan told Obama that reopening the border
before progress is achieved in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict would ruin
Turkey’s ties with Azerbaijan and be viewed as completely unacceptable
to Turkish voters," the daily informs. "The normalization process
between Turkey and Armenia is very much related to these issues,"
Erdogan emphasized.

"But even at a time when Washington is pushing for the normalization
process to be implemented ‘without preconditions and within a
reasonable timeframe,’ analysts agree that strong progress toward
putting an end to the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute seems unlikely, at
least in the short term. These all point to a potential stall in the
Turkey-Armenia reconciliation process," the source outlines.

The official welcome ceremony for the President of Latvia, Valdis
Zatlers, took place at the President’s Office today, followed by a
face-to-face meeting between the Presidnets of Armenia and Latvia.

Greeting his Latvian counterpart, President Serzh Sargsyan said:
"Although this is the first visit between our countries, but over the
past year we have had a number of opportunities to exchange views. The
intensification of the political dialogue evidences the willingness
of our countries to deepen the bilateral relations, and your visit
is a good proof of this."

"I’m glad to visit Armenia. The Latvian side has business interests
in Armenia, that’s why more than ten businessmen accompany me today,"
Latvian President Valdis Zatlers said. The meeting of the Presidents
was followed by a joint press conference.

Valdis Zatlers told reporters that "good will is necessary for
normalization of the Armenian Turkish relations. "The signing of the
protocols was a great step and a positive impulse for solution of
global issues, as well," he said.

"It’s very important for Turkey to understand that stability will
be established in the region when the Armenian-Turkish relations are
normalized," President Serzh Sargsyan said.

"The Republic of Armenia is willing to meet its international
commitments, i.e. ratify the Armenian-Turkish protocols, and expects
the same from Turkey. I have declared that if Turkey drags out the
ratification of the protocols, Armenia will use the opportunities
provided by international law. I declare now that I have instructed the
corresponding state bodies to prepare amendments to our legislations
regarding the signing, ratification and cancellation of international
agreements," President Sargsyan said.

The attempts to tie the Karabakh issue to the Armenia-Turkey
normalization will lead to a failure, President Sargsyan said and
added: "I have forwarded the protocols to the Constitutional Court
and the discussion will take place on January 12, 2010," the Armenian
President stated.

"Everyone should understand that the more the ratification process
drags out, the more obstacles appear. The political developments
might hider the process in the future," he added.
