YEREVAN, APRIL 28, ARMENPRESS: The Forum of Armenian Associations of
Europe (FAAE) has addressed a letter to US President Barack Obama. An
official from the forum told Armenpress that the letter of Ashot
Grigoryan, chairman of the FAAE, particularly runs, "The frank speech
in favor of justice and the usage of the internationally significant
definition of "genocide" would have brought honor to the president
of independent, free and democratic country of the USA.

You did not do that. We will not apply to you with this question any
more. It is pitiful, but our deep disappointment may pass from the
American-Armenians and from all the Armenians throughout the world
to the American electors; a president who does not keep his promise
in such an important issue can be mistaken in other essential issues
as well."

According to the FAAE, the full appraisal of the genocide by the
president would inspire hope to the population of the whole world
that the US President is ready to bravely partake in today’s universal
processes giving right solutions to them.

"Numerous big and small countries of Europe and the world have operated
with suchlike courage. By true appraisal of the genocide, you would
prove that you are faithful to the democratic principles assumed by
the USA and to the free and independent thinking. The act of paying
tribute of honor to the memory of 1, 5 million innocent victims of the
1915 genocide was started by great Hydro Wilson, and it was ratified
by the use of the definition of "genocide" by US President Ronald
Reagan. Your act would not be a news, but would repeat the act of
former, really great presidents," the letter of the forum states.

ArmInfo. On the occasion of Armenian Genocide 95th commemoration,
FPWC in cooperation with its general partner VivaCell-MTS implemented
a number of joint projects. In the frame of Earth Day celebrations on
April 22nd the Foundation embellished Memory Park in Tsitsernakaberd
with 95 seedlings brought from Western Armenia. To conclude the series
of events on the occasion of Armenian Genocide 95th commemoration
FPWC came up with a symbolic initiative which took place on the 27th
of April. For the first time the flowers deposed at the eternal flame
of the Genocide Memorial will "revive". Sunchild Eco-club children,
volunteers, FPWC staff, a number of organizations and individuals
first carefully removed the pedicles of the flowers which will later
be used in compost for the park of Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute.

The flower petals dried in special conditions and used in recycled
paper will turn into nice thank you cards and memos for the Genocide
Museum- Institute.

The cooperation of FPWC with Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute does
not only imply participation in the care of the Museum Park but also
demonstration of special approach to those people who brought flowers
to the eternal flame overwhelmed with deep, unutterable emotions. The
flowers disguised in thank you cards and memos will symbolize our
eternal struggle and creative existence to the visitors and guests
of the Museum.

It’s worth to mention that a few organizations like VivaCell-MTS,
Star supermarket, Yerevan State University (YSU), Gavar branch of YSU,
"To Hayq" benevolent foundation, "Youth achievements" NGO joined this
initiative of FPWC. Many popular artists also took part in this event.

There was a shift work day starting from early morning till late
evening.

This event was implemented in the frame of "Green Generation 2010"
campaign in partnership with VivaCell-MTS.

ANKARA: Glass Not Fully Empty In Turkish-Armenian Ties

GLASS NOT FULLY EMPTY IN TURKISH-ARMENIAN TIES

April 26 2010
Turkey

Another "April 24" has come and gone with all its suffering,
accusations, counter accusations and cross-vilifications. In the
meantime, ugly scenes took place in Yerevan and Beirut, where Turkish
flags and effigies of Turkish leaders were burned by hard-liners. It
did not take long for hard-liner Turks to reciprocate, and the next day
Armenian flags were burned in Istanbul, which also frequently witnesses
the burning of Israeli, American and Chinese flags, to name but a few.

Looking at all this, it is clear that the proverbial "glass" is not
yet "half full" in terms of reconciliation between the Turkish and
Armenian nations. But neither can it be said to be totally empty. This
year there were unprecedented developments that cracked the hard shell
of hatred between the two peoples. These can be expected to continue.

Armenian President Serge Sarkisian, for example, had kind words for
President Abdullah Gul in his speech, in which he explained to his
nation why Yerevan was only suspending the Turkish-Armenian protocols
and not annulling them. He also thanked those Turkish intellectuals
who have started to openly share the pain of the Armenian people.

It was noteworthy in this respect that two commemorative events took
place in Istanbul on April 24 to sympathize with Armenians who suffered
in 1915. The numbers of those attending were not great perhaps. But
one of the organizations was the Human Rights Association, or IHD,
which is well known and has branches all over Turkey. The other was by
a group of intellectuals comprising academics, journalists, lawyers and
businessmen etc., including some who are household names around Turkey.

These events were preceded by heated debates on television, where
things never pronounced before concerning 1915 were said and where the
term "genocide" was used without qualifiers, such as "so called" or
"alleged." Put another way, the infamous "article 301" of the penal
code holds no sway over this debate anymore despite the existence of
overzealous nationalist prosecutors.

In the meantime, one of the most notable articles in the mainstream
Turkish press on the topic came from Hasan Cemal of Milliyet.

"Some may call it deportation, some a tragedy, some may say genocide,
while some may refer to the great disaster. But you cannot deny it."

Cemal said going on to indicate he shares the suffering of the
Armenian people. What makes Cemal’s words important is that he is
the grandson of the infamous Cemal Pasha who was implicated in the
mass deportations of the Armenians in 1915.

Last year Cemal, while in Armenia, also met the grandson of the killer
of his grandfather, who was gunned down by a vengeance-seeking Armenian
nationalist in Tbilisi in July 1922. The meeting was later described
by witnesses as "a civilized and highly emotional event."

There was also something new in President Obama’s April 24 statement
this year. Of course, he displeased Armenians because he did not use
the term "genocide," but his remarks and the concrete number he used
for Armenian losses in 1915 were sufficient to show what he believes
happened then.

But what was new in his statement was that he thanked Turks who had
saved Armenians in 1915, a dimension of the whole issue that is not
dwelled on in any great length when this subject is debated.

Even the great Austrian writer Franz Werfel acknowledges this important
fact in his masterpiece "40 Days on Musa Dagh." Those who have read
this amazing piece of work know one of the "righteous" characters in
the novel is a certain "Rifat Bereket Agha" from Antakya, who actually
existed in real life.

Meanwhile, Turkish papers have become abound with human interest
stories about Armenians. Contacts are increasing between Turkish and
Armenian citizen groups, professional organizations and academicians.

In addition to this, Turkish reporters are traveling both to Armenia
and places like Beirut, where Armenians live in large numbers and
are reporting on what they hear and see.

These reports indicate clearly that Armenians will never forget what
happened to them in 1915, and no one has a right to expect this from
them. But they also indicate a very lively curiosity about Turkey,
as well as certain nostalgia, which is normal given that Turks and
Armenians have much in common culturally.

So the proverbial glass is not yet half full by a long shot. But
the developments of the past two years, including the two protocols
signed by the foreign ministers in Zurich, have galvanized something
between the two nations that did not exist before.

Hard-liners on both sides will try and nip this in the bud, of course.

But many seeds have been and are being sowed presently. And anyone who
works in a garden knows no matter how inhospitable the soil may be,
some seeds will insist on growing.

Yevda Abramov The Knesset (the Israeli parliament) will never adopt a
document that harms the relations of Israel with Turkey and Azerbaijan,
said MP Yevda Abramov.

On April 28, the Knesset will discuss recognition of the so-called
"Armenian genocide".

‘I have been told that this issue has been discussed in the committees
and commissions of the Knesset for already two months and tomorrow it
will be discussed for its inclusion or noninclusion into the agenda. I
was told the issue of "Armenian genocide" will not be included into
the agenda and will not be discussed. We have many friends in the
Knesset who will not let this issue be discussed.

The matter is that the Knesset will never adopt a document damaging
Israel’s relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan’, head of the
Azerbaijani-Israeli parliamentary group of friendship Yevda Abramov
said speaking in Milli Majlis after the telephone conversation with
the Knesset leadership.

MP Agil Abbas stressed the need for the group of the
Azerbaijani-Israeli friendship of the Azerbaijani parliament to
adopt an appeal or a statement regarding discussion of the "Armenian
genocide" in Knesset and send to the Israeli parliament.

‘The discussion of the ‘Armenian genocide’ in Knesset can spoil the
good relations between Azerbaijan, Turkey and Israel’, Abbas said.

Milli Majlis speaker Oqtay Asadov voiced confidence that the issue
of the "Armenian genocide" will not be discussed in the Knesset.

YEREVAN, APRIL 26, NOYAN TAPAN. The Armenian side has two advantages
over Azerbaijan in the issue of the Karabakh conflict settlement:
it tries to find a peaceful solution to the problem and it defends
its homeland, Armenian Defence Minister Seyran Ohanian declared at
the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial on April 24 – on the 95th anniversary of
the Armenian Genocide. "Azerbaijan is trying to apply psychological
pressure on us and the international community, but it is useless
because if Azerbaijan tries to use force against our people, it
will also have very negative consequences for Azerbaijan. We have an
advantage: we defend our homeland," the minister said.

Senator Reid statement in recognition of 95th commemoration

REID STATEMENT IN RECOGNITION OF 95TH COMMEMORATION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

WASHINGTON

The following information was released by Nevada Senator Harry Reid:

Nevada Senator Reid today made the following statement in recognition
of the 95th Commemoration of Armenian Genocide.

In recognition of the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, I
honor the memories of the more than 1.5 million men, women and
children who perished in this unthinkable genocide.

The time has come for our government to identify these organized acts
of mass violence for what they really were genocide. In my ongoing
efforts to encourage our country to recognize the genocide, I have
co-sponsored the Armenian Genocide resolutions in the last three
Congresses.

I believe that paying tribute to those affected by this tragedy is a
necessary step to combat future forms of violence and intolerance. I
am glad Nevada is included among the 40 states that have recognized
the Armenian Genocide, and hope our entire government soon follows.

Russia hopes for normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations

Russia hopes for normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations – spokesman

Russia hopes that Armenia and Turkey will manage to overcome the
current crisis in their relations, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman
Andrey Nesterenko has said, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on
its website on 23 April.

Asked about Moscow’s reaction to the decision by the Armenian
president to suspend the ratification of the Armenian-Turkish
protocols signed in October 2009, Nesterenko said: "Armenia and Turkey
at this stage have failed to reach a result that would make it
possible to re-establish relations between the two neighbouring
countries and by so doing to improve the political atmosphere in the
Transcaucasus, to create prerequisites for strengthening stability in
this region.

"In a televised address on 22 April Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
stated a disappointing outcome of lengthy talks on settling relations
with Turkey and declared an impasse. He noted that Armenia had only
suspended the ratification of the protocols and had not withdrawn its
signature. Thus, the good prospects of normalizing relations between
Armenia and Turkey that began a year ago remain.

"We express the hope that the two countries will manage to overcome
the present difficult situation and to create conditions for
full-scale normalization of relations, which is in the interests of
all the states in the region."
