Armenian Apostolic Church has not expressed a position on Jerusalem

According to Arabologist Hayk Kocharyan, the Armenian Church should also express its position on the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A letter was sent to US president Donald Tramp, signed by the spiritual leaders of Jerusalem’s Christian communities. The expert welcomed the Armenian patriarchate’s step and said: “Jerusalem does not belong to any nation or any other country, it is a cultural heritage, it is the center of three religions.
We have a great heritage there and we should stand for it. The situation will be tense there.”

US President Donald Trump’s statement on recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has caused a great stir not only in Turkey, but also in all neighboring countries, and even the US colleagues have been deeply concerned and protested.

According to Mr. Kocharyan, this step of Trump was conditioned not only by the pre-election promise, but also by the influence of the Jewish lobby. “The groom, who is also his advisor, is known for his personal ties with the Israeli government, and I believe that this has played an important role. There are many other factors, but the fact is that there is already a statement, and we should deal with the consequences of it.”

This statement will increase the tension in the Middle East and we will witness the collapse of the fragile security system.

Before I’mPOSSIBLE makes its global launch on Sunday (3 December), two countries have already experienced positive responses within their youths because of the education programme.

Armenia and Colombia were among the first countries to implement I’mPOSSIBLE – a toolkit of resources designed to engage young people in the Paralympic Movement – as part of a pilot launch, and have seen plenty of passionate interactions with schoolchildren learning more about Para sports and the Movement’s values.

“We have been in schools and universities and all youth are aware of the Paralympic Movement,” said Ruzanna Sargsyan, Secretary General of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Armenia. “They are aware of sports for people with disabilities and believe people with disabilities should be active and full members of society.”

I’mPOSSIBLE is led by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and its development arm the Agitos Foundation. By educating young people about inclusion and the Paralympic values, it aims to challenge and change the perceptions of how they perceive people with an impairment.

The toolkit includes a teacher handbook and five units that were translated to Armenian to assist in the implementation back in November 2016. So far, they have implemented the programme in universities and schools in Yerevan.

“I’mPOSSIBLE is a great opportunity for the public at large to learn about the Paralympic Movement and raise awareness that sport for people with disabilities exists and how important it is for people to be active,” said Sargsyan.

Now, NPC Armenia wants to keep the momentum going.

On Monday (4 December), they will hold a wheelchair basketball game and short introduction to I’mPOSSIBLE at the Institute of Physical Education of Armenia to celebrate the programme’s international launch.

In April, NPC Colombia also had a pilot launch at schools with a Spanish version of the toolkit.

The NPC’s Secretary General Carlos Raigoza said the programmed was implemented in 10 schools in three different areas of the country, and has a plan in place to also continue the momentum.

“We are already working on the approach of the project to the teachers of the schools that initiate the process,” Raigoza said. “We have invited them to different spaces where the detail of the Paralympic sport has been explained to them and they have shared with our athletes. All of the project's information has been shared with them so they can become familiar with its contents.”

“We are sure that this project will make it possible to erase that gap of lack of knowledge and disinformation that currently exists with people with disabilities and Paralympic sports,” he continued. “It will allow people in general to know all the possibilities offered by Paralymic sport and the benefits it brings for people with disabilities who practice them.”

Ronn Torossian Hired to do PR For Turkey; Is He Really an Armenian?

Harut Sassounian

BY HARUT SASSOUNIAN

The website Medium.com posted two articles by Louise Neu revealing that Ronn Torossian had signed a contract to represent Turkey as its PR agent! Torossian is President of the 5W Public Relations firm based in New York City.

Justice Department records indicate that Torossian signed the agreement on May 25, 2017. His firm will get paid an additional $60,000 for the period of May 16-Nov. 16, 2017, which is automatically renewable for another six months. This payment is in addition to the amount specified in the contract signed on August 10, 2016.

It is noteworthy that Torossian signed the agreement with Turkey nine days after Pres. Erdogan watched his bodyguards beat up a group of demonstrators in front of Turkish Ambassador’s residence in Washington, DC. Three days after the protesters were beaten and injured, Torossian published an article in The Algemeiner, titled: “Deport Radical Islamist Preacher [Gulen] and Maintain American Interests.”

Interestingly, Louise Neu revealed that Torossian had written another article in Newsmax on Feb. 17, 2017, criticizing the media coverage of Michael Flynn’s resignation. Ironically, Torossian had written an earlier article in Newsmax on May 20, 2015, critical of PR Firm Levick Communications’ work for the Embassy of Qatar, in which he stated: “There are those who feel it is OK to spin for dictators and terrorists. Yet, this writer [Torossian] agrees with the owner of the world’s largest PR firm, Richard Edelman, who said, ‘PR is not like the law — Not everyone deserves representation.” Contradicting himself, Torossian engaged in the hypocritical action of defending the interests of Erdogan, the dictator of Turkey!

Ronn Torossian

In addition, Torossian wrote on January 27, 2017, in The Observer, published by Pres. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, criticizing PR firms that “whitewash repressive regimes….” He concluded: “dictators and terrorists don’t deserve any PR help.”

I called Torossian’s office twice. Each time a staff member assured me that he would return my call. I never heard from him. Louise Neu had a similar experience when she tried to reach Torossian. When she tweeted him about his connections to Turkey and Trump associates, Torossian tweeted back: “I shot JFK! My ex-wife is Russian!!!! I even ate caviar this week!” Torossian is not only impolite in not responding to phone messages, but he is reported to have a bad temper against his employees and others! The New York Times described him as “brash and aggressively outspoken.” He is also reported to have business dealings with shady Jewish and Russian oligarchs, according to Louise Neu. Even though Torossian has an Armenian last name, I was not able to confirm if one or both of his parents are Armenians, or neither one!

Ronn Torossian is also “a partner, Chief Marketing Officer and advisory Board member of JetSmarter,” according to his Linkedin profile. JetSmarter is a controversial company described as “uber for planes.” The CEO of JetSmarter is Sergey Petrossov, the son of Vatchagan Petrossov, who definitely has an Armenian name.

The main reason I was interested in Ronn Torossian’s employment as a PR agent for Turkey is that there was a similar situation with Barry Zorthian who worked from October 1980 to February 1984 for the lobbying firm of Gray and Co., hired by Turkey. Zorthian was a former executive for Voice of America and Time, Inc. In 1968-69 he was the chief U.S. spokesman in Saigon, Vietnam.

After I had become aware that Zorthian was simultaneously an executive at a lobbying firm for Turkey and Board Member of the Armenian Assembly of America, I called him to ask if his dual roles did not create a conflict personally or for his firm. As a sign of respect for a fellow Armenian, I cautioned him that if he answered my questions, it could lead to his dismissal from his job. Zorthian, 63, replied that he did not care if he lost his $65,000-a-year job as senior vice president of Gray and Co. He went ahead and honestly answered all my questions. Zorthian explained that he worked in the public relations office and not on the Turkey account which was handled by the firm’s lobbying department.

As soon as my article was published on the front page of the California Courier on January 19, 1984, the Turkish newspaper Tercuman reported my interview with Zorthian which caused a great embarrassment to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, finding out that an Armenian-American was a top executive for the lobbying firm that was getting paid $300,000-a-year by Turkey.

On Feb. 21, 1984, the lobbying firm’s vice chairman, Alejandro Orfila, told Zorthian that the Turkish Ambassador Sukru Elekdag was extremely irate reading the newspaper report. Orfila quoted Amb. Elekdag stating: “I hired you guys to help me with my political problems, and instead you’re creating problems for me… You must do something drastic that I can report back to my government or else I’ll be forced to cancel the contract.”

The PR firm’s chairman, Robert K. Gray, cut his vacation short in Acapulco, Mexico, and immediately returned to Washington. Zorthian was fired after rejecting Mr. Gray’s request to resign.

Even though I was not pleased to see Mr. Zorthian lose his job, but as a young reporter who had started working as a journalist six months earlier, it was very satisfying that my obscure article made the headlines in Turkey and came to the attention of the Turkish Foreign Ministry and Amb. Elekdag. Furthermore, the Washington Post wrote a lengthy article on April 13, 1984, quoting from my article and mentioning my newspaper as the source of this international controversy.

I urged Zorthian to file a lawsuit accusing Gray and Co., of employment discrimination due to his national origin. Zorthian did file charges with the Washington, D.C. Office of Human Rights, claiming he was illegally fired because of his Armenian background.

Unfortunately, I do not know the outcome of Zorthian’s lawsuit. Both he and his wife have passed away since then.

If Mr. Torossian is truly an Armenian, how could he do PR for Turkey? More importantly, how could Turkey hire him given Mr. Zorthian’s experience?

EU, Armenia Poised To Sign Landmark Deal

 . Hovannes Movsisian

Armenia - Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian (E) and EU
Commissioner Johannes Hahn arrive for a news conference in Yerevan,
2Oct2017.

The European Union and Armenia will almost certainly sign next month
an agreement aimed at significantly deepening their relations, a
senior EU official said late on Thursday.

Johannes Hahn, the EU commissioner for European neighborhood policy,
confirmed that the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement
(CEPA) is due to be signed during or on the sidelines of an EU summit
in Brussels scheduled for November 24.

"This agreement with Armenia will be signed, no doubt about it." Hahn
said at a meeting with civil society members from Armenia and other
ex-Soviet states held in Estonia's capital Tallinn.

"I think it's pretty sure that this will be done around the summit or
at the summit," he added.

In an apparent reference to Russia, Hahn suggested that the EU's and
Armenia's "neighbors" do not object to the deal. "At least they accept
it," he said.

Russian pressure exerted on Yerevan is widely believed to have
scuttled a more ambitious Association Agreement which Armenia and the
EU nearly finalized in 2013. President Serzh Sarkisian precluded that
accord with his unexpected decision to join the Russian-led Eurasian
Economic Union (EEU).

The spokesman for Sarkisian's ruling Republican Party of Armenia
(HHK), Eduard Sharmazanov, made clear late on Thursday that Yerevan is
"planning" to sign the CEPA in Brussels. "Had we seen any problems in
the agreement we would not have initialed it [in March,]" he said.

Unlike the Association Agreement, the CEPA would not make Armenia part
of a "deep and comprehensive free trade area" with the EU. Still, the
350-page document commits Yerevan to "approximating" Armenian economic
laws and regulations to those of the EU.

Hahn stressed that Armenia is the first EEU member state that will
sign a "far-reaching agreement" with the EU. "This is important # This
shows that co-existence is possible," he said.

Hahn went on to reiterate his view that the CEPA will serve as a
"blueprint" for other countries interested in closer ties with the EU.

Armenian Parliament Approves Scrapping Of Draft Deferments

 . Ruzanna Stepanian

Armenia - Armenian army soldiers are lined up at a military base in
Tavush province, 2Dec2016.

The Armenian parliament overwhelmingly passed on Friday a
controversial government bill that will mostly abolish temporary
exemptions from military service that have long been enjoyed by many
students of state-run universities.

Draft-age male students having government scholarships have until now
been allowed to perform the two-year compulsory service after
completing their undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate studies. The
bill put forward by the Armenian Defense Ministry will grant draft
deferments only to those students who will agree to undergo parallel
military training and serve in the army as officers for three years
after graduation.

Defense Minister Vigen Sargsian said during parliament debates that it
would close a key loophole for evading military service and reduce
"corruption risks" among military and university officials. He argued
that less than one-fifth of recipients of such deferments have
eventually served in the army.

The proposed measure has been strongly criticized by the opposition
Yelk alliance. Deputies representing the bloc say it would prevent
many students from becoming scientists or scholars. They also say that
the proposed change must not be enacted because it would not stop sons
of many senior government officials, pro-government politicians and
wealthy businesspeople from dodging military service.

Sargsian attacked Yelk leaders on Thursday, saying that they have no
moral right to complain about draft evasion. He claimed that one of
them, Edmon Marukian, enjoyed privileged treatment during his military
service while another, Ararat Mirzoyan, avoided such service
altogether despite not becoming a scientist. Both Marukian and
Mirzoyan condemned the personal attacks from the minister.

Sargsian also claimed that Yelk leaders backed the idea of scrapping
draft deferments when he discussed it with them several years ago. "I
can only thank God for the fact that with such a worldview you are a
minority, not a majority, in the parliament," he declared.

Not surprisingly, all nine deputies representing Yelk voted against
the bill. But 87 other lawmakers backed its passage in the first
reading. They represent not only the ruling Republican Party and its
junior coalition partner, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, but
also the opposition Tsarukian Bloc.

The adopted law will come into effect in January 2021, meaning that it
will not apply to students who have already been granted deferments.

Yerevan Signals Continued Reliance On Nuclear Energy

 . Anush Muradian

Armenia - President Serzh Sarkisian visits the Metsamor nuclear plant,
23Jan2016.

Armenia's government has not abandoned its ambitious plans to build a
new nuclear power station after the eventual closure of the aging
plant at Metsamor, President Serzh Sarkisian indicated on Friday.

Sarkisian said his administration remains committed to a 20-year
energy strategy adopted in 2015 as he spoke at a regular session of a
panel of domestic and international experts advising him on nuclear
safety.

"The [2015-2036] program calls for extending the exploitation of the
existing [power-generating] block [of the Metsamor plant] until 2027
and gradually introducing new nuclear blocks later on," he
said. Nuclear energy provides a "necessary level of energy security"
in the country, added the president.

Justice Minister Davit Harutiunian stated as recently as on October 17
that the Armenian government may give up the idea of replacing
Metsamor, which generates roughly a third of Armenia's electricity, by
a new nuclear plant meeting safety standards.

Sarkisian pledged to build the new plant shortly after taking office
in 2008. The project never got off the drawing board, however, as his
government failed to attract billions of dollars in funding needed for
the new plant's construction. The government decided instead to extend
the life of Metsamor's 420-megawatt reactor by 10 years, until 2027.

Russia is playing a key role in this endeavor, having provided Armenia
with a $270 million loan and a $30 million grant in 2015. The money is
due to be mainly spent on the purchase of Russian nuclear equipment
and additional safety measures that will be taken at the Soviet-era
facility located 35 kilometers west of Yerevan.

Vahram Petrosian, the executive secretary of the presidential Atomic
Energy Safety Council, said on Friday that the Metsamor may continue
functioning even after 2027.

"Our country is not so rich as to stop such a good [nuclear] block ten
years later," Petrosian told reporters after the council meeting
chaired by Sarkisian. "Rich countries extend the life [of their
nuclear plants] by 30 years. Why should we stop it ten years later?"

Asked about Harutiunian's statement, the official said: "We have no
alternative to atomic energy."

Press Review

"Zhoghovurd" carries an editorial on the 18th anniversary of a
terrorist attack on Armenia's parliament that left Prime Minister
Vazgen Sarkisian, parliament speaker Karen Demirchian and six other
officials dead. "It's a crime whose consequences have still not been
overcome and whose wounds have still not healed," writes the
paper. "It's a crime which set Armenia's development several decade
back and contributed to the establishment of dictatorship in the
country." It says it remains unclear who masterminded the October 1999
shootings.

"Haykakan Zhamanak" says the authorities claim to have averted at
least three such attacks in Armenia in the last few years."It
basically means that when Serzh Sarkisian's life and well-being was in
danger the National Security Service managed to act properly, react in
a timely manner, expose and prevent a crime," comments the paper. "But
when the lives of Vazgen Sarkisian, Karen Demirchian and others were
in danger the NSS led by Serzh Sarkisian [in 1999] was simply
inactive."

"Zhamanak" cites reports that Belarus will supply more weapons,
notably Polonez rockets with a 200-kilometer range, to Azerbaijan. The
paper denounces Prime Minister Karen Karapetian for not publicly
demanding explanations from his Belarusian counterpart at this week's
Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) meeting in Yerevan. It claims that
Karapetian only cares about retaining his post with Russia's help in
April 2018.

"Chorrord Ishkhanutyun" reports that Archbishop Pargev Martirosian of
Nagorno-Karabakh has lavished praise on Mikael Minasian, President
Sarkisian's son-in-law and Armenia's ambassador to the Vatican, for
donating several handmade Armenian carpets to Karabakh's medieval
Gandzasar monastery. He said that Minasian is introducing a "new
culture" of benevolence. "It's good that the Gandzasar monastery will
have handmade Armenian carpets which are said to be worth several
dozen thousands of dollars," the paper says. "But there would really
be a new culture if not only the son-in-law, the brothers or relatives
of Serzh Sarkisian but also ordinary businesspeople were able to
engage in charitable activities."

Azerbaijani Press: ANAS Institute of History issues statement on map crisis

News.az, Azerbaijan
Oct 11 2017

Thu 16:36 GMT | 19:36 Local Time

The Scientific Council of the Institute of History of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has issued a statement with regard to the publishing of a map of so-called “Greater Armenia” in the Russian version of the textbook “General History” for 10th grade.

The statement stresses that the map illustrating the territory of so-called “Greater Armenia” is based on a marble map posted on the wall on a street (Via dei Fori Imperiali) in downtown Rome in 1934 upon the order of Benito Mussolini, a fascist dictator who sought to revitalize the Roman Empire.

“At that time of military-political transition, it is no secret that that particular map was selected to be posted on the wall under the influence of the Armenian lobby, who were seeking to achieve its ugly ambitions. The dissemination of this made-up map of “Greater Armenia” in the world’s various media and information resources, including Wikipedia, is ensured by the US-based National Association for Armenian Studies and Research. A special grant has been allocated by this Armenian nationalist organization. All the analogous maps depict the northern borders of so-called “Greater Armenia” stretching south of the River Araxes towards the Caspian Sea. The biggest concern is that such a made-up map has been published in the Russian version of the textbook “General History”, reads the statement.

According to the statement, the studies (“Irevan Khanate: Russian occupation and relocation of Armenians to Northern Azerbaijan”, “Karabakh: Real history, facts and documents”, “Nakhchivan: Its history and monuments”, “Real history and fictional “Greater Armenia”” and numerous works dedicated to the acts of genocide committed by the Armenians against the Azerbaijani people), which were conducted by the Institute of History in recent years under the instruction of Azerbaijan’s president, revealed that no Armenian state existed in the South Caucasus till the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic handed over Irevan and the territories adjacent to it to Armenians on May 29. 1918.

“Mass relocation of Armenians to the South Caucasus was carried out under Turkmenchay (1828) and Edirne (Adrianople 1829) treaties,” says the statement.

The statement also notes that the Ministry of Education should fully take control of this sphere and determine the authors of textbooks.

“The Institute of History is confident that if all textbooks, including history textbooks are examined by ANAS scientific research institutes, in particular by the Institute of History, there will be no such mistakes. Inexperienced and incompetent experts should be removed from this work,” says the statement.
