YEREVAN, JULY 2, ARMENPRESS. Armenia became global leader for “Technology and Innovation for Gender Equality” action coalition of the UN-led Generation Equality Forum on July 1, ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the MFA Armenia.

Convened under the auspices of the United Nations, the Generation Equality Forum was established upon the initiative of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), co-hosted by the Governments of France and Mexico, in partnership with civil society. The process aims to boost cooperation between governments, international organizations and the civil society in the context of the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration. The Forum is structured around six thematic action coalitions that are aimed at promoting gender equality and women's rights in the areas of economic empowerment, healthcare and climate, prevention of gender-based violence, feminist movements and leadership.

The global leaders of the Action Coalitions comprise 20 countries, selected entities of the United Nations system, international organizations and other relevant stakeholders, including civil society organizations. The selection of the coalition leaders was made on the basis of the level of the demonstrated commitment of the candidates, the progress achieved in the priority area and other criteria. Armenia’s nomination for coalition leadership in technology and innovations stems from the priorities of the Government of Armenia for advancing gender equality, political and economic empowerment of women, as well as progress achieved in the ICT industry.

The Action Coalition on technology and innovations will be led by Armenia, Finland and Tunisia – the three countries that have been selected to steer global action in cooperation with the UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union.

The Generation Equality Forum will also launch an innovative Compact for Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action to drive action and resources towards peace, security and humanitarian action. The Compact will strengthen coordination between existing initiatives and partnerships to ensure that women and youth are at the center of peace, security and humanitarian action, twenty years after the landmark UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.

 14:07,

YEREVAN, JUNE 23, ARMENPRESS. The trial of former President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan and other ex-officials over the 2008 March 1 case was postponed for a week.

The decision was made as Mihran Poghosyan, attorney of Yuri Khachaturov, didn’t attend the court hearing.

Prosecutor Gevorg Baghdasaryan filed a motion requesting the court to limit the attorneys’ right to file various motions. According to him, such actions of attorneys do not allow them to read the final part of the accusatory speech.

Judge Anna Danibekyan said the prosecutor’s motion includes issues which are impossible to discuss without the presence of all attorneys, therefore she postponed the hearing.

The next hearing will take place on June 30, 13:00.

Robert Kocharyan has been charged with overthrowing Constitutional order during 2008 March 1-2 events in Yerevan.

The case also includes former defense minister of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan, former chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Yuri Khachaturov and former chief of staff of the Presidential administration Armen Gevorgyan.

COVID19 Relief: Knights of Vartan and
Ayo Program of FAR Teamed Up

Yerevan – The Knights and Daughters of Vartan share the concern of
helping to combat the COVID19 pandemic and with Past Grand Commander Nigoghos
Atinizian and Mrs. Roset Atinizian’s matching fund of $5,000 joined Ayo program
of FAR and raised far over $10,000 for food and everyday necessities for people
in the Tavush border region of Armenia.

COVID-19
is spreading, and all cautions are needed to prevent it. For this purpose, the
lock down in Armenia has left scores of people with either limited income or no
income at all. They needed our help more than ever. Knights of Vartan Past
Grand Commander Nigoghos Atinizian initiated a matching fund. He and his wife, Roset
donated $5,000 to be matched by funds raised by the Knights and Daughters of
Vartan and friends.

“People in Tavush region are hardworking and I
have met many of them during my frequent visits to Armenia. We know the
pandemic is temporary and one day we will overcome it. But there are families
who need our urgent support now and we would like to stand by their side during
this needed time” said Past Grand Commander Nigoghos Atinizian.

Just
one week after announcing the matching fund drive to the Knights and Daughters
of Vartan community across the United States, over $10,000 was raised for COVID-19
relief in the Tavush region.

The Tavush
region has the longest geographical border with Azerbaijan. The region is a strategic
location and for decades the Knights and Daughters of Vartan and its members have
been involved in numerous charitable projects to help support its people. Among
those efforts is the COVID-19 Relief project with Ayo. It is essential given
the current pandemic that now spreads in Armenia and in the world.

During
the last several weeks, and using the money raised during the matching
fundraising drive, the Ayo program staff has distributed 400 packages to some 400
families in the Tavush region. The packages include basic necessities as well
as food. We know that along with receiving their package of food, these
families also receive emotional support. They realize that they are not alone
and that during these difficult times, their brothers and sisters across the border
and around the world have them in their thoughts.

There
are several other projects that the Knights and Daughters of Vartan have
undertaken as members continue to show their support for their brothers and
sisters in Armenia.

“We
are so thankful to Past Grand Commander Nigoghos and Roset Atinizian for their
generous donation and to the members of the Knights of Vartan who rose to the
occasion to help our homeland.  As members of the Knights of Vartan we are
committed to helping our homeland along with our communities in the diaspora”
expressed Grand Commander Steven Adams.

Ayo! is a fundraising platform of Fund
for Armenian Relief (FAR). By providing a vehicle to raise money for local
development projects, it allows the people of Armenia to make positive changes

Asbarez: Reclaiming Nationalism, Rejecting Chauvinism, Building Socialism

Garen Yegparian

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

On May 28th, Independence day (the OG one, of course, not the September 21 re-independence of 1991), I finished Houri Berberian’s latest book “Roving Revolutionaries” (well worth reading if you can make the time). Some of the issues she describes in the book that occupied our national leadership’s collective mind at the turn of the previous century are also timely today, and little discussed. Inspired by the day and the book, I thought a quick look at three concepts relevant to our new, Yerevan centered, state-building effort would be worthwhile.

Let’s first dispense with the negative one of the concepts, that which no one should want guiding or informing how our state institutions evolve and solidify, chauvinism. In English, this term is relatively little heard in recent times, and perhaps most often only in the phrase “male chauvinism”. Chauvinism is an attitude of superiority held by a person about the group s/he belongs to relative to some other group. Unfortunately, we see it among our compatriots more often than I care to admit. The sense that Armenians are better than (fill in a group) must go. It can only breed the same mentality in response, leading inevitably to conflict. It must be whittled out of our national consciousness. It should be enough that chauvinism is the same diseased mindset which led to the Young Turks organizing the Genocide. Happily, Paruyr Sevak’s oft-recited poem’s first, second, and final lines say it all and must serve as our beacon in this respect:

“Մենք քիչ ենք‚ սակայն մեզ հայ են ասում։
Մենք մեզ ո՛չ ոքից չենք գերադասում…
Կա՛նք: Պիտի լինե՛նք: Ու դեռ – շատանա՜նք:”
“We are few, but are called Armenians.
We don’t consider ourselves superior to anyone…
We exist. We shall continue. And we will grow.”

The next concept I want to address is nationalism. This one is fraught with negative connotations in today’s world, thanks to a number of historical and ideological phenomena. It is very unfortunate that such is the case. The Nazis and their Holocaust, the wars fought in Europe over the past two-three centuries, the ongoing conflicts in other parts of the world have led to a stigmatization of a very noble idea. Please see the accompanying table with definitions of the concept from the same dictionary’s editions of 1940, 1973, and currently online. Stunning, isn’t it how the term has gone from something describing a collective awareness or policy bent to something negative, to the point where the definition has effectively equated to chauvinism.

Degenerating definitions of nationalism

It gets worse. Have you heard “white nationalism” and “Islamic nationalism”? Ridiculous terms! Since when have “whites” constituted a “nation”? Armenians, Cherokees, French, Japanese, and Zulus are nations. But whites? Equally, since when has it been rational to equate adherents of a religion to a nation? Islam has its notion of a community, “umma”, not nation. It’s fashionable now to attach “nationalism” to any human grouping’s name when someone wants to vilify it. Enough! Remember, nationalism helped break up the chokehold of empires and grotesque emperors over human beings. Nationalism helped democracy take hold in many places. People, humans, have a basic need to belong. It’s one of the major avenues by which we manifest our caring for others. The most natural group to associate with once we get past family/clan is the nation. Sure, anything taken to an extreme is bad. But nationalism is not inherently bad, any more than faith/belief systems or commitment to some cause (environment, human freedoms, etc.). I urge all those who denigrate the is noble and natural sentiment to stop their misguided crusade. Nationalism is what will help us rebuild Armenian statehood.

Finally, socialism. This very word rankles and terrifies many people. It has been abused by those who allegedly implemented it. Think Soviet Union, which, when it became a dictatorship, by definition forever removed itself from the universe of socialism. Socialism cannot exist in the absence of democracy. Conversely, democracy cannot long endure in the absence of socialism. Democracy addresses people’s political liberation/freedom, while socialism sees to their economic and social liberation/freedom. The term socialism has equally been abused by those who feel threatened by its egalitarianism and the hope it inspires among the largest number of people who use its guiding precepts to struggle against the tyranny of big money, corporatism, or “the 1%” – a recently fashionable term. And, they have been quite successful after decades of propaganda. Socialism is a dirty word for many people.

Here’s the rub. Many of the societal, legal, benefits we enjoy are the product of socialist thought, advocacy, and struggle. Here are some examples, from the U.S. experience since that is the setting with which I am most familiar. The 8-hour-workday/40-hour-workweek, Social Security, unemployment insurance, Medicare, holidays, farmer support programs, universal public education, the right to unionize, and more. You probably can’t even imagine life where workers would not be allowed to take bathroom breaks, be locked inside factories, and even burn to death as happened to 146 people on March 25, 1911 in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York City and a century later in the Tazreen textile factory (Dhaka, Bangladesh) on November 25, 2012. Even the environmental and consumer protections we take for granted in most western countries rise from the same ideological source. But if we continue on the route selected since the Reagan administration, all of the public goods we take for granted will be whittled away to nothing. That’s why some of these universally popular programs have been the targets of the political right wing… Didn’t you ever wonder why U.S. public schools have been underfunded for the past four decades or so?

This is why socialist precepts must guide the policies implemented by our twin Armenian republics and why we must all support such development in our homeland.

Sports: Discovering young talents: Armenian defender from Sweden

News.am, Armenia

By Samvel Sukiasyan

NEWS.am Sport continues to represent young Armenian football players playing abroad and wishing to play for the national team of Armenia in the future.

The captain of the Swedish Falkenbergs FF team U19 is the Armenian central defender Edgar Khachatryan.

"I was born in Denmark in February 2001, but my family moved to Sweden when I was a child. My height is 191 cm, I play as a central defender."

He started playing football at the age of 8 at the Köping FF. After 2 years he moved to Landskrona BoIS U12 squad.

"At the first stage of my career, I also played in midfield, thanks to which I also have certain attacking skills," he added. "There I was noticed by the Falkenbergs FF scouts."

"My club represents the Swedish Premier League – Allsvenskan. I am the captain of the team U19, often I also play in the clashes for the U21 squad. I train as part of the main team."

"Last year, as part of the youth team, Falkenbergs FF won the Swedish championship. We lost only one clash out of 22, having conceded only 18 goals and scoring more than 70."

"Given that in Sweden I play at a fairly high level and am one of the key players of the team, I think that I deserve to receive an invitation to the youth team of Armenia. I keep in touch with a representative of the football federation. For me, an invitation to the Armenian team will be a great honor and it will be a dream come true. Thank you very much for your interest and interview,” said Edgar Khachatryan.
