Sir Elton, who has sold more than 300 million records during a career spanning five decades, rubbed shoulders with Lymington audiologist Brian Tilley in the Armenian capital of Yerevan.

Writing on Instagram Sir Elton, 71, said: "It's impossible to describe the sheer joy you feel watching someone hear properly for the first time."

Brian's visit was organised by the Starkey Hearing Foundation, which has supplied almost two million hearing aids to people in more than 100 countries.

Sir Elton is one of Starkey's high-profile supporters along with entrepreneur Richard Branson and former US President Bill Clinton.

The legendary singer-songwriter was accompanied by his husband, David Furnish, and Starkey's founder, Bill Austin.

Brian was among 15 audiologists from across the UK and Ireland who visited Armenia with a six-strong team from Starkey's European headquarters in Cheshire.

The trip followed a previous visit made in October last year, when he and his colleagues fitted more than 1,800 people with hearing devices.

Brian, who is based at the All Ears Hearing Centre in Lymington, said: "I was pleased to be asked back to give the gift of hearing in Armenia.

"It's great to be involved in something which means so much to people who haven't got the facilities in the own communities.

"This is proof that the Starkey Hearing Foundation doesn't just visit once and leave with no support.

" It shows that what's given is for the long-term, with aftercare provided.

"It's wonderful to be involved in continuing the support of the Armenian people."

According the World Health Organisation, more than 360 million people suffer from a disabling hearing loss, with the greatest number living in developing countries.

This is the first official visit of Chancellor Angela Merkel to Armenia, but in the past she has been in Armenia.

“I want to note with satisfaction that the Armenian-German relations are based on mutual understanding and deep trust. Germany is a very important partner for Armenia, but there is much room for expanding our cooperation in different spheres. And of course, I want to express my satisfaction for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Germany  and also for the political support that we feel in our cooperation with the EU, since the Armenian-EU relations are very important for us,” President Sarkissian said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed satisfaction and gratitude for being hosted in Armenia. “Dear Mr. Sarkissian, I am glad to be hosted in your country and I am glad for our meeting. Last year our countries marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and today we can summarize our relations as positive. I agree with you that we have unutilized potential in our relations and it should be used not only in political or economic spheres, but also in research and technological spheres. We wish to make our contribution to the reforms declared by Armenia and we attentively followed the changes and processes that took place in your country in spring. We are ready to cooperate in this difficult but important moment,” she said.

During the meeting the sides referred to the Armenian-EU cooperation, as well as to the opportunities of deepening bilateral relations in different spheres, including culture, education and science.

Vladimir Karapetyan: Kocharyan is protected by money, by hired people (video)

Member of ANC: “The executioner of free speech, Robert Kocharyan, will not escape from justice.”

“Robert Kocharyan will not be able to escape from justice,” Vladimir Karapetyan, Chairman of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) Foreign Affairs Committee, told “A1+.”

“I am confident that Kocharyan, the executioner of free speech, the one during whose days the slaughter of March 1 [2008] occurred, will not escape from accountability.”

The member of the ANC is not surprised from the fact that more than 40 MPs gathered the signatures to change Kocharyan’s preventive measure on March 1 case. He expected more. “They had to ‘flood’ the streets and TV companies to speak and praise him, to protect the person who helped to make wealth during their rule.”

The representative of the ANC believes that today the money plays a role: “We all know that Kocharyan has great capabilities and spends tens of thousands of dollars to hire lawyers and, perhaps, the head of the office, so that they can say one or two positive words [about him]. Those people who are not paid by Robert Kocharyan, are silent,” said Vladimir Karapetyan.
