Schools reopen across Armenia, with not all school employees tested for coronavirus yet

Panorama, Armenia
Sept 15 2020

Author Nare Gevorgyan

Schools reopened across Armenia on Tuesday after a two-week delay, however as it was the case one month ago, teachers and parents are facing uncertainty, hoping that at least within the next week they will figure out what to do.

Apart from the mandatory rule to wear face masks, repeatedly disinfect hands and practice social distancing, today teachers and parents are facing another problem concerning the testing of school staffs, which, as it turns out, has not been properly organized.

Although during the nationwide parent-teacher meeting on 26 August, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan assured that before the launch of the academic year all teachers would be tested for coronavirus, it is still up in the air.

Panorama.am has learned that teachers from not all schools under the control of the Gegharkunik Regional Administration have undergone testing, which has caused concerns among many parents, who are afraid that one or more teachers may be infected and pass the virus to their children.

In response to Panorama.am's question why it has not been possible to test all teachers before the reopening of schools, Lusine Vardanyan, Head of the Health and Social Security Department of the Regional Administration, said the province has no laboratory and the test samples taken from people are sent to Yerevan, therefore, it has not been possible to test all school staffers.

However, she said that in the near future the province will have its own laboratory and experts are currently undergoing training to carry out the work on the ground.

"We need to take samples from 4,570 school employees, but we have still collected 1,263 samples. At the moment 5 teachers and 3 administrative employees are infected. We continue testing the others in all communities," she added.

Asked whether in that case there are no risks that some of the teachers not tested yet may be carrying the virus and infect schoolchildren, Lusine Vardanyan said that schools are under strict control.

"Temperature checks are being conducted at schools, there are nurses in all schools, who examine the school employees on the ground. We are doing everything possible to rule out such cases, though there may be an infected teacher who has no symptoms. In any case, we are trying to carry out the sampling,” Vardanyan stated.

We also tried to understand why the fact that the provinces lack their own laboratories was not taken into account, giving rise to such a situation, but the Ministry of Health urged us to submit a written inquiry, while the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports said it was not clear yet whether they were to answer that question or the Ministry of Health.

Azerbaijani press: Deputy PM: Silence of Mediators’ limits Azerbaijan’s choice in ensuring its territorial integrity

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 15

By Elchin Mehdiyev – Trend:

The beginning of a new phase is observed in the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Trend reports referring to the publication titled "Armenian provocations and the silence of the OSCE Minsk Group" made by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, Ali Ahmadov, posted on his official Facebook page.

“The steady expansion of the Armenian provocations gradually began to replace the relative stability that was preserved in the past,” Ahmadov added.

“The clashes in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district on the state border between Azerbaijan and Armenia two months ago as a result of Armenia’s military provocations, the subsequent exposure in connection with the supply of weapons to this country, the arrest of the Armenian saboteur in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Goranboy district are just a shortlist of Armenian provocations in the conflict zone and connect with the conflict,” deputy prime minister said.

“The Armenian prime minister’s frequent visits to the occupied territories and statements that fundamentally contradict the spirit of the settlement process have become an integral part of other Armenian provocations,” Ahmadov said.

“The fact that the "appeals for peace" made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's wife in the first months of the Armenian prime minister's rule recently replaced the photographs with the Kalashnikov assault rifle, testifies to the vile nature of the Armenian provocation,” deputy prime minister said.

Ahmadov stressed that the Armenian provocations are observed not only in the country’s aggravation of the militaristic rhetoric and behavior.

"The recent resettlement of the Armenians of Lebanese origin to the occupied Azerbaijani territories is nothing more than an unprecedented provocation, striking a crushing blow on the conflict settlement process,” deputy prime minister added.

“The whole world witnesses a process of gross violation of international law – the settlement of the occupied territories,” Ahmadov said. “The Armenian adventurism will lead to dangerous prospects, for example, to repeat in the 21st century the policy of resettlement, which once changed the demographic situation in the South Caucasus.”

“The history of the last 50-60 years of the Middle East is an instructive example of bitter consequences of such games,” deputy prime minister said. “The attempts of the Armenian politicians to turn the South Caucasus into a hotbed of constant conflicts and wars cannot be ignored. They must be condemned by international organizations and the world community as a whole.”

“Amid Armenia’s growing provocations, the silence of the OSCE Minsk Group, which took upon itself the mission of settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, its transformation into an impartial observer, to put it mildly, cannot but cause surprise,” Ahmadov added.

“In any case, the OSCE Minsk Group cannot evade responsibility because the conflict has dragged on and it has failed to find the correct formula for the settlement,” deputy prime minister said. “Presently, the OSCE Minsk Group witnesses that the Armenian side continues to commit another crime, which can lead to new, even regretful consequences.”

“Azerbaijan stands for peaceful but just settlement of the conflict with the condition of withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from all occupied territories,” Ahmadov said. “With a few exceptions, the ceasefire which has been valid since 1994 testifies to this.”

“However, the fact that the conflict has not been resolved up till now, the growing Armenian provocations and the silence of the mediators limit the choice of Azerbaijan in ensuring its territorial integrity,” deputy prime minister said. “Azerbaijan must and will return its occupied lands.”

“If mediators and diplomats do not cope with their work, the heroic Azerbaijani army will fulfill its noble mission,” Ahmadov said. “The battles in April 2016 and July 2020 showed what our army is capable of. There is no doubt that our servicemen will lead to the triumph of justice.”

Lebanese-Armenians were some of the many Beirut residents directly affected by the explosion on August 4th.

Since the blast, Armenia has pledged aid to Lebanon, offering its brotherly assistance through the provision of food, medicine, and medical equipment.

Armenians in Canada and the United States are also stepping up to help, launching fundraisers in their respective countries to help out the capital that is home to a large Lebanese-Armenian community.

Notably, the largest Armenian district of Beirut, Bourj Hammoud, was extremely affected by the blast due to its close proximity to the Beirut Port.

In Canada, Aid4Lebanon, a Canadian Aid Committee for the Lebanese-Armenian community, launched the campaign Relief4Beirut on their social media.

Their call to their community says, “Join us to help our brothers and sisters in Lebanon! Help Beirut Rise Again!!”

Beirut is “home to millions of our Lebanese brothers and sisters and one of the strongest Armenian communities in the world.”

In the United States, the Armenians have also stepped up to help by sending support to their community in Beirut.

Armenia Fund, in collaboration with the Armenian Relief Society and Code 3 Angels, just sent a special airlift from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to the Armenian Relief Cross of Lebanon.
