TURKEY HAS CALLED OFF ITS AMBASSADOR TO SWEDEN AND PRIME MINISTER HAS CANCELLED HIS VISIT TO SWEDEN

ANKARA, March 11 (Itar-Tass) – Turkey has called off its ambassador
to Sweden and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cancelled a
previously planned visit to Sweden.

The measures came as a reaction to the Swedish parliament’s decision
earlier in the day to recognize the genocide of ethnic Armenians,
Assyrians and Pontic Greeks in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

The office of the Prime Minister said in a special statement Turkey
condemns the Swedish resolution. The Turkish-Swedish business forum
and the Prime Minister’s visit to Stockholm are henceforth cancelled,
it said.

The statement says the ambassador has been called off for
consultations.

It accuses the Swedish MPs of a political calculus behind their
resolution, saying it has been necessitated by political reasons and
especially by the elections due in Sweden in September.

The Swedish parliament’s move stands in controversy with the relations
of friendship and close cooperation existing between the two countries
and their peoples, the statement says.

The resolution on genocide was put up for voting in Swedish parliament,
the Rigksdag, Thursday morning and its discussion continued until
almost the end of the workday.

The draft was submitted by opposition forces – the Left Party, the
Green Party, the Social Democratic Workers’ Party and several MPs
from the Liberal People’s Party and the Christian Democratic Party.

The resolution was endorsed by a slight majority of votes. It
recognizes the extermination of 1.5 million Armenians, 250,000 to
500,000 Assyrians and about 350,000 Pontic Greeks in the last phase
of Turkey’s imperial history.

The opponents of recognition of the genocide came up with explanations
for their position.

One of them, Gustav Blix of the Moderate Coalition Party, told Radio
Sweden that it is not politicians that should write history.

He indicated that decisions on such knotty issues should be taken by
international law agencies.

Blix fears the recognition of genocide may hamper the incipient
process of rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey.

Sweden’s Parliament Passes Armenia Genocide Resolution

SWEDEN’S PARLIAMENT PASSES ARMENIA GENOCIDE RESOLUTION

Sweden’s Parliament on Thursday passed a resolution recognizing the
killing of Armenians and many other ethnic groups in 1915 as genocide.

The 349-seat parliament passed the resolution with a narrow majority,
with 131 yes, 130 no and 88 abstention, said the Swedish news
agency TT.

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt strongly criticized the
parliament’s resolution.

"It is wrong to politicize history in this situation and on the other
hand, it makes it difficult for Sweden to work towards reconciliation,"
Bildt was quoted as saying by TT.

He added that the resolution was a result of power shift within the
red-green opposition.

Turkish government immediately recalled its ambassador to Sweden home
in protest against the Swedish parliament’s resolution, according
to TT.

The Swedish parliament voted twice on the issue in 2000 and 2008,
but failed to approve it.

Turkey and Armenia signed two protocols last October to normalize
relations; however, parliaments of the two countries have not ratified
them yet.

Turkey strongly rejects genocide allegations and regards the events
as civil strife in wartime which claimed lives of many Turks and
Armenians.

Turkey and Armenia have been bogged down in the row over the deaths
of Armenians and have no diplomatic or economic ties since Armenia
declared its independence in 1991.

As already the case with the United States and Canada. Erdogan cancels
a trip to Stockholm. The Armenian diaspora against diplomatic relations
between Armenia and Turkey.

Ankara (AsiaNews / Agencies) – Turkey has recalled its ambassador
from Sweden, after the Stockholm parliament voted by a narrow margin
a resolution on the Armenian genocide. The Turkish government has
denounced the resolution as "based on blunders and without any
foundation". Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan, condemned the
action as "motivated by political calculations" and canceled a meeting
between Turkey and Sweden to be held on 17 March.

Sweden is one of the strongest advocates of Ankara’s entry into the
EU. The resolution was passed by 131 votes to 130, with the votes of
the opposition and that of some MPs of the ruling party.

Carl Bild, Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the vote was
"a mistake" and that does not change the position of his government,
which remains in favour of Turkey in Europe.

A week ago a similar incident occurred in the United States, where
the congressional committee passed a similar motion on the Armenian
genocide and Turkey also recalled its ambassador from Washington. Last
year, a similar incident happened with Canada. At the end of the
Ottoman Empire (1915-17), hundreds of thousands of Armenians were
killed as they were deported from eastern Anatolia. Many also died
of starvation.

Many historians and the Armenian people consider it as a planned
genocide. According to other historians and Turkey, the killing of
Armenians is just one of many cases of violence that occurred during
the war. According to the Armenian, the genocide claimed the lives
of 1.5 million people, according to Turkey the dead were probably 50
thousand, with many Turks.

Recently, Armenia and Turkey have prepared for a restart in diplomatic
relations, but the Armenian Diaspora is strongly opposed to it until
Ankara fully recognises the genocide.

So Who’s Playing A "Double Game"? Iran And US Duke It Out

SO WHO’S PLAYING A "DOUBLE GAME"? IRAN AND US DUKE IT OUT

Tert.am

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused the US of playing
a "double game" in Afghanistan after the US used the same term to
condemn Iran’s role, reports BBC News.

Ahmadinejad said the US had "created terrorists and now say they are
fighting them," as he appeared with Afghan President Hamid Karzai
in Kabul.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, who is also in Kabul, has accused
Iran of giving the Taliban low-level support.

This is Ahmadinejad’s first visit to Afghanistan since both he and
Karzai were re-elected last year.

At a joint press conference with Karzai, Ahmadinejad rejected the
presence of foreign military forces "as a solution for peace in
Afghanistan."

He said: "Our policy is full support for the Afghan people and Afghan
government and reconstruction of Afghanistan."

Gates, who is in Afghanistan to review the progress of the current
Western troop surge against the Taliban, had earlier accused Tehran
of "playing a double game" of offering friendship to the Afghan
government while at the same time giving "low-level support" and
money to the Taliban.

Ahmadinejad said it was the US that was playing the "double game."

Forbes magazine’s annual list of billionaires has been published and
for the first time in 16 years, a person from outside the US leads
the rankings: Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helú beat Bill Gates and Warren
Buffett for the top spot.

The net worth of Helú, 70, who built a telecommunications empire after
buying Mexico’s state-run phone monopoly two decades ago, rose $18.5
billion to $53.5 billion. Gates, 54, chair of Microsoft Corp., fell to
second as his net worth increased $13 billion to $53 billion. Buffett,
79, chair of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., was third with $47 billion,
a rise of $10 billion, reports Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

The number of billionaires climbed to 1,011 from 793 last year,
although still below the rankings’ high of 1,125 in 2008. Their
cumulative net worth increased to $3.6 trillion from $2.4 trillion, and
the average jumped $500 million to $3.5 billion as the world economy
began to rebound from its worst slump since the Great Depression.

Armenian-American tycoon Kirk Kerkorian ranked 307th, dropping from
last year’s 209th place, with a net worth of $3.1 billion (as compared
to $5 million last year). The other Armenian billionaire on Forbes’

Armenia

Edward and Mary Ann Kazanjian of Belmont will present an illustrated
talk entitled "A Journey To Historic Armenia: There Is Something
There," on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., at the National
Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) Center, 395
Concord Ave., Belmont, MA.

In June 2009, the Kazanjians traveled with a group of Armenians from
the U.S.A., Cyprus, and Austria, led by veteran tour guide Armen Aroyan
of the Armenian Heritage Society (CA). They ventured on a 3,000 mile
journey through more than thirty cities and villages in historic
Armenia, including Edward’s family’s ancestral Kharpert Veri Tagh
(Upper City) and Mary Ann’s ancestral Yozgat, as well as Kayseri,
Sivas, Shabin-Karahisar, Erzurum, Sarakamish, Kars, Ani, Ararat, Van,
Aghtamar, Engil, Mush, Changli, Kighe, Bingol, Lice, Nehkr, Palu,
Elazig, Diyarbakir, Chunkush, Malatya, Hussenig, and Kharpert.

The Kazanjians will present in pictures, video, and music their
own account of their first-time trip to Historic Armenian lands in
modern-day Turkey. Among their memorable experiences was discovering
Mary Ann’s great-great-grandfather’s home in Yozgat and Edward’s
finding the sites and remnants of the St. James and St. Stephen’s
Churches in Kharpert.

Following the overwhelming response to the Kazanjians’ talk at the
Armenian Library and Museum of America (ALMA) in November 2009, it was
decided to schedule an encore presentation at NAASR. The couple will be
returning to visit portions of Historic Armenia in the spring of 2010.

Edward Kazanjian recently retired after a 41-year career as: a
General Dynamics engineer; public schools administrator in Framingham,
Brookline, and Billerica and most recently as Assistant Superintendent
of Schools in Westwood, MA; and sixteen years as Executive Director
and Senior Consultant for an Educational Cooperative. He is still
consulting part time. Mary Ann Arakelian Kazanjian is a former
elementary school teacher and has been a church organist for 45 years
first at St. James and currently at St. Stephen’s Armenian Churches
in Watertown.

Admission to the event is free (donations appreciated). The NAASR
Center is located opposite the First Armenian Church and next to the
U.S. Post Office. Ample parking is available around the building and

malfaiteurs !

Iranian Pastor Tortured, Threatened For ‘Converting Muslims’

IRANIAN PASTOR TORTURED, THREATENED FOR ‘CONVERTING MUSLIMS’

Charisma News Online
6473-iranian-pastor-tortured-threatened-for-conver ting-muslims
March 9 2010

An Assyrian pastor the Iranian government accused of "converting
Muslims" is being tortured in prison and threatened with execution,
sources close to the case said.

State Security agents on Feb. 2 arrested the Rev. Wilson Issavi,
65, shortly after he finished a house meeting at a friend’s home in
Isfahan. A city of more than 1.5 million people, Isfahan is located
208 miles south of Tehran.

According to Farsi Christian News Network, Issavi’s wife, Medline
Nazanin, recently visited her husband in prison, where she saw that
he had obvious signs of torture and was in poor condition. Iranian
intelligence officials told Nazanin that her husband might be executed
for his alleged activities.

Issavi is the pastor of The Evangelical Church of Kermanshah in
Isfahan, a 50-year-old church body affiliated with the Assemblies of
God that caters to the local Assyrian population.

During the raid, State Security police detained everyone in the house,
later releasing all but Issavi and the owner of the home. Security
officials also seized personal property from the home. Typically in
Christian arrests in Iran, security officials confiscate all documents,
media materials, computers, and personal documentation.

Issavi is being held in an unmarked prison, according to FCNN.

Last month’s arrest seems to be part of an anti-Christian sweep
that is taking place across Isfahan. In addition to the politically
motivated detentions and executions that have taken place after June’s
contested election and subsequent nation-wide political protests,
it appears authorities are rounding up Christian leaders.

More Arrests

On Feb. 28, Isfahan residents Hamid Shafiee and his wife Reyhaneh
Aghajary, both converts from Islam and house church leaders, were
arrested at their home.

Aghajary was at home with a group of other Christians when police came
for her and her husband, who was not at home, according to Middle East
Concern, a group that assists persecuted Christians. Police handcuffed
Aghajary and, upon finding boxes of Bibles, began beating her.

The assault continued until eventually Aghajary was pepper-sprayed
and removed from the scene. Her husband Shafiee was arrested an hour
later when he returned to the house.

Their fate and whereabouts are still unknown.

Authorities assaulted another Christian visiting the house at the time
of the raid when he protested the police action. Other Christians at
the house were threatened, but no one else was arrested. Approximately
20 police officers raided the home, seizing Bibles, CDs, photographs,
computers, telephones, personal items and other literature.

One regional analyst, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said
the Iranian government is set on crushing religious freedom within
the country.

"The recent spate of church leader arrests provides clear evidence
of the Iranian authorities’ desperate determination to strangle the
growing church movement, along with all other forms of perceived
political dissent," he said.

February’s arrest was not the first time Shafiee has had run-ins
with Iranian authorities. He has routinely been ordered to appear
before police for questioning and then released. This arrest, however,
was different. When family members contacted police on March 1, they
were told that the couple’s case was under the jurisdiction of the
Revolutionary Court and were turned away with no other information.

While the couple is imprisoned, family members are caring for their
two teenage boys.

Frequent Harassment

Like Shafiee, Issavi has been harassed frequently by the Isfahan branch
of the State Security police. He has been ordered to appear before
the police many times, then arrested and interrogated. In addition,
police have threatened members of his family and have broken into
his house and taken items such as his computer.

On Jan. 2, 2010, police sealed the Kermanshah church and ordered Issavi
not to reopen it. The church continued to have house meetings, and
authorities charged Issavi with not cooperating with the government.

The Assyrians were one of the first ethnic groups in the Middle East to
adopt Christianity. The existence of the Assyrian Christian community
in Iran predates the existence of their Islamic counterparts by
several hundred years. There are 10,000 to 20,000 Assyrian Christians
living in Iran, according to unofficial estimates cited in the 2009
International Religious Freedom Report issued by the U.S.

Department of State. The total Christian population is 300,000
nationwide, according to the United Nations. Most of those Christians
are ethnic Armenians.

Isfahan has been the site of some of the worst religious persecution
in Iran. On July 30, 2008, Abbas Amiri, a Christian man in his 60s,
died in a hospital after being beaten by Isfahan security police.

Authorities had arrested Amiri along with seven other men, six women
and two minors during a July 17 raid on a house meeting. Four days
after her husband died, Sakineh Rahnama succumbed to her injuries
and a stress-related heart attack. Later, officials wouldn’t allow
local Christians to hold a memorial service.

Iran, where Shia Islam is the official state religion, is known to be
one of the worst countries for repression against Christians. The U.S.

Secretary of State has designated Iran as a Country of Particular
Concern every year since 1999 for its persecution of non-Shia Muslims,
among others.

Last year, according to the International Religious Freedom Report,
persecution of Christians and other religious minorities continued to
get "significantly worse." The state department placed the blame for
this squarely at the feet of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Iran’s
conservative media, who "intensified a campaign against non-Muslim
religious minorities, and political and religious leaders" by issuing
a continual stream of inflammatory statements.

"Christians, particularly evangelicals, continued to be subject
to harassment and close surveillance," the report states. "The
government vigilantly enforced its prohibition on proselytizing
by closely monitoring the activities of evangelical Christians,
discouraging Muslims from entering church premises, closing churches,
and arresting Christian converts."

Evangelical Christians were required to carry church membership cards
and provide photocopies to authorities, according to the report.

"Worshippers were subject to identity checks by authorities posted
outside congregation centers," it states. "The Government restricted
meetings for evangelical services to Sundays, and church officials
were ordered to inform the Ministry of Information and Islamic Guidance
before admitting new members."

ONE SHOULD NOT COMPLETELY ATTRIBUTE AFFIRMATION OF H.RES.252 ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE TO US CONGRESS CAUCUS ON ARMENIAN ISSUES

ArmInfo
2010-03-09 20:31:00

ArmInfo. One should not completely attribute the affirmation of
H.Res.252 on the Armenian Genocide to the US Congress Caucus on
Armenian Issues, Armenian MP from Heritage faction Vardan Khachatryan
told journalists, Tuesday.

According him, the affirmation of the resolution is also a lever of
pressure on Turkey, which could be used for a number of reasons.

"Turkey caused serious troubles for the USA twice: for the first
time – when it refused to provide its territory for passage of US
troops to Iraq, and for the second time – when it blocked Bosporus
and Dardanelles for US ships during the conflict in South Ossetia in
August 2008. Therefore, it is easy to suppose that the affirmation
of the resolution was dictated by the interests of US establishment
and was though over in advance. This is proved by the fact that the
resolution was demonstratively affirmed with one casting vote",-
said Khachatryan. He thinks that the Turkish politicians’ emotional
statements made after the affirmation of the resolution are nothing
but the display of the real stance of these politicians about Armenia.

On March 4 2010 the House Committee on Foreign Affairs affirmed House
Resolution 252, or the non- binding Armenian Genocide Resolution, that
calls upon the President to recognize the death of 1.5 million ethnic
Armenians as genocide in his annual remembrance on April 24. The
committee split 23 yes votes to 22 no votes. For final adoption,
the resolution requires approval by the House of Representatives. No
approval by the Senate or the President is required. Earlier Turkish
Parliament addressed a letter to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs
saying that affirmation of the Resolution may impede the Armenian-
Turkish normalization.
