There’s an election slated for May to decide who will become the next
Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople.
There have been 84 individual Patriarchs since the establishment of
the Patriarchate in 1461. At this crucial juncture in Turkish-Armenian
relations, the upcoming election, due to the illness of current
Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan, is regarded as decisive not only for
choosing the spiritual head of the Patriarchate and the Armenian
community in Turkey, but also because the next Patriarch will need to
map out how the church will navigate the murky waters of
Turkish-Armenian diplomacy.
What follows is a piece taken from yesterday’s Hurriyet. Has the
Armenian press reflected on the importance of the discussions and
debate now taking place in Istanbul regarding the May election?
Bishop Sebouh Chuljyan, Primateof the Armenian Apostolic Church
Diocese of Gougark, will be the 85th patriarch of Armenians in Turkey
if he wins the elections expected to take place in May. He would be
the first from the Republic of Armenia.
According to an 1861 Ottoman regulation that is applicable even today,
a bishop can be the patriarch of Armenians in Turkey if his father was
born in Turkey.
Speaking to Hurriyet during a visit to Istanbul, Chuljyan delivered
important messages not only to the Turkish and Armenian communities,
but also to the Western world.
Speaking at the historical Armenian church of `Surp Kevork’
(St. Gregory) at KocamustafapaÃ?Â?a in Istanbul, Chuljyan said if he
wins, then the patriarchy would be `kept away from politics.’
`We will not repeat the previous mistakes. Let politicians deal with
politics. I will put effort into enhancing the dialogue between the
Turkish and Armenian peoples,’ he said. `We need to look deep in each
other’s eyes and talk about grievances.’
Chuljyan also said the recent warming of bilateral relations is a
historic milestone. He said steps must be taken immediately to
re-establish official relations. `This chance to open the path of
dialogue between the two peoples should not be missed. Time works
against us,’ he told Hurriyet.
The bishop criticized the Western world’s mediation, also saying that
Germany played a major role in the events of 1915. `Germany has not
accepted its responsibility in the events of 1915 until today. It has
always preferred to keep silent,’ he said, adding that the innocent
Armenian population in Anatolia went through great agonies in the past
because of the `egocentric stance of the West.’
`The Western world has manipulated us for its benefits in Anatolia,’
he said. `I would like to think that those who try to act as mediators
between the Turkish and Armenian peoples are trying to get rid of the
burden of their consciences. However, they have their interests in
mind once again, in the form of the Caucasus.’

No need for European mediators
Chuljyan said he believes Turkey and Armenia should start building
dialogue immediately, without mediators. `There is no one who knows us
better than us. Let us overcome our grievances together and start a
dialogue,’ he said.
Throughout the interview, Chuljyan kept his critical stance toward the
Western world, addressing the West: `Do not add any more salt to our
wounds, do not pit the two peoples against themselves for your
interests.’
Chuljyan was actually born in Turkey, in the eastern province of
Malatya, before migrating to Armenia at the age of 10 with his
family. The bishop speaks Turkish fluently. If he is elected
patriarch, he will apply for Turkish citizenship, provided the Turkish
Republic approves. He said he would keep his Armenian citizenship and
become a dual citizen.

Armenians are children of Anatolia
Chuljyan said he visits Anatolia every chance he gets. `We Armenians
are the children of these lands and are bonded here by heart,’ he
said. `Do not misunderstand me. We respect the unity of Turkey. We
love these lands as much as you do because we [too]
e a part of it.’
On the matter of Armenian cultural artifacts within Turkish borders,
Chuljyan said: `We can repair historical structures together; we can
bring our experts together for that. The remains may be a part of the
Armenian culture but they are Turkey’s legacy. All we want [from
Turkey] is to not deny their ownership.’
When reminded of the possibility of reopening for prayer the
historical church of Surp Khach on Akhtamar Island in Van province in
eastern Turkey, Chuljyan said: `I believe that the Turkish people have
respect for all beliefs. I believe they will understand the importance
of Surp Khach for Armenians.’
Mesrob II, the current patriarch, has fallen ill and was diagnosed
with dementia. Chuljyan said Mesrob II has already earned his place in
history books and commented on his sudden illness, which came in the
aftermath of the assassination of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant
Dink: `He received many threats and they damaged his health in an
irrevocable way.’
When asked what he would do if he faced such threats, Chuljyan said:
`Intelligent people full of the love of God do not seek solution in
threats and conspiracies. Strong people who have faith in themselves
overcome problems through dialogue.’

ArmInfo. "The goal of the criminal prosecution against me is
appropriation of our new enterprise and infringement of our
reputation", says the statement made by Chairman of Board of
Armeconombank, co-founder of SIL Concern Saribek Sukiasyan, Friday,
commenting on institution of a criminal case against him under Article
133 Part 2 Clauses 1 and 7 of the Armenian Criminal Code.

To recall, on 12 February Sukiasyan was taken to the police department
of Erebouni. He was accused of the fact that on pain of death he tried
to make Director of Audit company Gor Davtyan sign some documents on
a transaction concerning purchase and sale of Byuregh company. On 15
February Sukiasyan was released on his own recognizance.

In his statement Sukiasyan says that he refused to sign some document
and familiarize himself with the accusations as he considered them
to be groundless, and that the criminal case was fabricated on false
bases. "The goal of this prosecution is appropriation of our new
enterprise and infringement of our reputation",- says the statement.

However, according to the entrepreneur, the political motives of the
prosecution are known to everybody and its initiators will fail to
gain their goal. "I hope the day will come when we will publish the
names of all members of the gang wishing to take away our property.

We are guided only by business thinking",- says the statement.

To recall, at the presidential election in 2008 Saribek Sukiasyan’s
brother, the former Armenian MP Khachatur Sukiasyan supported the
candidacy of Levon Ter-Petrosyan. After the tragic events in Yerevan
in March 2008 Khachatur Sukiasyan was put on the wanted list. In
September 2009 Khachatur Sukiasyan yielded himself to the authorities
and was released on his own recognizance.

TBILISI: US Analyst Optimistic About Turkish-Armenian Relations

US ANALYST OPTIMISTIC ABOUT TURKISH-ARMENIAN RELATIONS

Analysts from the US analytical centre RAND think that improvement
of the relations between Armenia and Turkey will diminish Yerevan’s
dependence on Moscow both economically and politically. A document
analysing Turkish-Armenian relations says that Armenia could more
deeply integrate with regional economic or energy projects if relations
were improved, and this could simultaneously become a stimulus for
Turkey to integrate with the EU.

The analysts think however that this process will produce a certain
strain between Ankara and Baku. They say that the major stumbling
block in the process of Turkish-Armenian rapprochement is the Turkish
attempt to connect this with the resolution of the Karabakh conflict.

Furthermore, if the US Congress resolution about the Armenian genocide
is passed this will significantly damage Ankara-Washington relations.

ArmInfo. The social network "Odnoklassniki" propagates national hatred,
doesn’t it? Such a question arises when one sees certain user Niko
Ehmedzade who has posted the picture of the criminal Ramil Safarov
instead of his own avatar. To recall, the Hungarian Court for viciously
murdering the Armenian officer Guirgen Margaryan sentenced Safarov,
the lieutenant of the Azerbaiuani armed forces, to life imprisonment.

Both the officers were on military courses in Budapest. The poster
with the comment "RAMIL SEFEROV. NATSIONALNIY GEROY AZERBAYCANA!!!"

(Ramil Safarov. National Hero of Azerbaijan) is not the only
anti-Armenian picture on the user’s page. He has another picture with
comment "Karabakh is ours." The motives of some sicky Azerbaijani users
are evident, whereas the attitude of the website administration is not
clear enough. Here is the notification well known to all the users of
the social network: "Do not upload photos where your face is not seen,
as well as pictures where children are without parents, pictures with
animals, subjects, paintings, famous people, cartoons, advertising
and links to other websites, erotic photos and photos insulting
other users." The website contains also many other notifications in
details and every picture posted by users is allegedly supervised
by moderators.

The website administration probably does not consider propaganda
of the criminal who murdered a person just for nationality and his
declaration as the national hero "insulting for other users". There
is also another circumstance arousing indignation i.e. the website
does not ban posting of racist, nationalist, fascist nature pictures.

Hence, it does not assume responsibility for the given case.

ArmInfo. Sergei Paradjanov Festival will be held in London and Bristol
on 22 Feb-9 May 2010.

The press-service of the organization committee told ArmInfo that
the Sergei Paradjanov Festival in London and Bristol is the first
major celebration of the legendary artist and filmmaker whose talent
transcends religious and political boarders, drawing on the cultural
traditions of Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine and Russia. The Festival aims
to present the life and works of Sergei Paradjanov to UK audiences
through a series of diverse events that include: a film season;
a moving image installation; a symposium and a workshop at the
BFI Southbank; a photographic exhibition at the National Theatre;
screenings and talks at Pushkin House; a concert at St. Yeghiche
Armenian Church; a film retrospective at Arnolfini (Bristol); and a
photographic exhibition at The Bristol Gallery.

Sergei Paradjanov (1924-1990) is one of the 20th century’s greatest
masters of cinema. Armenian born in Georgia, Paradjanov studied
film in Moscow, worked in Ukraine, Armenia and Georgia. He started
making films in 1954 and is celebrated for his poetic and visionary
films including The Colour of Pomegranates (1968) and Ashik Kerib
(1988). A winner of British Academy Award for the "Shadows of Forgotten
Ancestors", Paradjanov was a constant target of Soviet authorities;
deprived of the opportunity to make films for fifteen years, five
of which were spent in hard labour camps, he found the most vibrant
means of expressing his talent through drawings, collages and writing.

Paradjanov was ahead of his time, for his works posses the elements and
stylistics which came to constitute contemporary arts – performance,
video art and moving image and mixed media installations.

The festival will feature a number of talks and introductions
by distinguished guests, experts on Paradjanov’s works, who will
elaborate on the significance of Paradjanov’s phenomenon and the
legacy of his creation.

The Sergei Paradjanov Festival is organised by Layla Alexander-Garrett
and GLAZ in conjunction with BFI Southbank, and sponsored by UNISTREAM
money transfers, British Georgian Chamber of Commerce, Armenian
Community and Church Council of Great Britain, Ukraine International
Airlines, Ivan the Terrible, Brown’s Hotel.

The Chairperson of the NA Standing Committee Mrs. Naira Zohrabyan

about it. They will be sent to the European Parliament to elaborate
the final version of the statute. According to Mr. Ochoa, some
information is spread that Armenia is against the idea of Euronest. In
Mrs. Zohrabyan’s opinion, it’s most likely that taking into account

acceptable for it and will be a matter of discussion in Euronest. She
also noted the reservations, which are not acceptable for Armenia,
in particular, that the NK issue cannot be a matter of discussion in
Euronest. "We emphasize the idea of Euronest and, we are sure that
it can have a serious role in forwarding the defined directions by
the Eastern Partnership, but we cannot allow some of our neighbours
trying to use any podium, by which creating new divisive lines at its
own discretion. Thus, we’ll insist on our positions of principle,"
the Committee Chairperson told the Advisor. The EU Advisor to RA NA
