MAGIC VALLEY — Just recently President Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to officially recognize the killings of Armenians during World War I as a genocide.

No U.S. president in the past has acknowledged the killings of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire as a genocide for fear of losing relations with Turkey.

But for one Armenian refugee in the Magic Valley, the news was bittersweet.

“It was bittersweet not only because I wish my grandparents were alive to see this day and not only because of the life-long work that not only myself but many advocates have done to see that the U.S. has recognized the Armenian genocide,” Liyah Babayan, Idaho chair of the Armenian National Committee, said.

For Liyah and her family, they thought this moment would never come. Her family resettled in Idaho after having to flee Armenia because of the ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan.

“So it does matter to resettlement communities when the atrocities that we have survived are recognized by the communities that are resettling us," Babayan said.

“Armenians are happy that someone is acknowledging it. Some Armenians are not happy; they feel like the U.S. could go further that we could do something about it. Let's find a way that we can show that the U.S. is backing this in different programs,” JustinVipperman, Historian at The College of Southern Idaho, said.

The Gem State also did its part with Governor Little signing a proclamation recognizing April 24, 2021, as a remembrance day for the Armenian genocide.

“What we see with Idaho doing this and Governor little pushing this is that it is on people's minds people are starting to look at it as a genocide," Vipperman said.

Babayan says for Idaho this moment is full circle since the Gem State resettled Armenians during the 1915 genocide.

“After the 1915 genocide, Idaho resettled and adopted over 1,000 orphans through Christian groups and missionary groups and so for the governor to issue a proclamation it’s very meaningful and it’s very full circle for Idaho," Babayan said.

She says the Armenian genocide being recognized is vital and sends a positive message to resettlement communities in Idaho and throughout the nation.

“So it does matter to resettlement communities when the atrocities that we have survived are recognized by the communities that are resettling us. It lets us know that we are sharing something and that it does matter to our new community to our new country those events and those tragedies,” Babayan said.

"Today's talks covered not only the trilateral cooperation aimed at unblocking economic links in the region but the whole spectrum of issues emerged in the post-conflict period," Russia's FM Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Thursday, summing up talks with his Armenian counterpart.

Lavrov's remarks were made in response to Panorama.am request to comment on Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev's recent statement about the so-called 'Zangezur corridor.'

To remind, in a recent interview, Aliyev declared that their would implementing the Zangezur Corridor, whether Armenia wants it or not. ‘If Armenia wants to, we will solve this issue more easily, if it does not, we will solve it by force,’ the local source quoted him as saying.

Lavrov reminded that the mechanism of trilateral cooperation at the level of deputy prime ministers was established according to the decision of the president of Russia, Azerbaijan and the prime minister of Armenia as reflected in the January 11 trilateral statement adopted in Moscow.

"This mechanism envisages agreements which are exclusively volunteer, are based on mutual benefits and imply nothing except diplomatic agreements and decisions aimed at completely unblocking the economic links. Any issues put forward in contrary to the agreements made by the three leaders can not be accepted as an alternative to what has already been agreed," said Lavrov.

The US and its recognition of the Armenian genocide

eKathimerini, Greece
May 4 2021

OPINION

It took many years for the White House to officially recognize the Armenian genocide; however, the current American president sends the signal that the United States, after the short break of the last four years, continues to be the main proponent of the Western ethos. Nevertheless, everything in politics has just a single dimension.

First, it is imperative for the US to send a clear message to the rest of the world that the days of MAGA are finally over and that a new era of MARA (Make America Reliable Again, as I argue in my latest book) begins with Joe Biden. The end of the MAGA era is not just a normative formality but a strong message that is directly related to American soft power. After four years of neo-protectionism and generous doses of populism, America has started probing the “Shining City on the Hill” role again. Thus, the recognition of the Armenian genocide must be seen as a reintroduction of American values to the world.

Second, this is a clear message to Turkey that the days where Ankara was free to play with American prestige are over. This is a direct blow to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman agenda and his perpetual efforts to frost Turkey’s past with gallantry and chivalry – e.g. the film “Fetih 1453.” America’s recognition of the Armenian genocide will not affect Erdogan directly but Erdoganism instead. In the future, Turkish historians will admit that while Kemalism managed to avoid such a development, Erdoganism, with its profound maximalism, failed to protect the nation’s prestige. Anyone who understands the Turkish president’s way of thinking can understand that this will be his Sisyphean punishment in perpetuity.

Third, this is a brilliant move by the American side in Central Asia and the so-called Russian geostrategic red zone. Moscow brilliantly played the punishment card of Armenia in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, where the Armenian Army was left all alone to be crushed by the Azeri-Turkish forces. Moscow never liked the “complementarity” approach of Yerevan in international affairs, a sui generis form of neutrality regarding the American-Russian antagonism in the Caucasus or the hesitant striking steps of the country toward Brussels. Before the Nagorno-Karabakh defeat, large parts of Armenian society favored the adoption of the nation taking a pro-Western turn. The recognition of the Armenian genocide sends the message to the Armenians that Washington is not indifferent toward the political developments there and that a return to the days of a Russian monopoly will be no walk in the park.

The recognition of the Armenian genocide will be one of the most notable moments of the Biden administration, while it must also be seen as a triumph of the Armenian lobby in Washington. Furthermore, before someone starts drawing a comparison with the Greek lobby in the American capital, it is essential to comprehend the following. First, we should learn to trust the moves of our lobbyists in Washington, who do an excellent job in promoting the Greek and the Cypriot arguments there. Second, the whole procedure must be seen as a marathon. We have to work strenuously for the recognition of the Greek genocide in Asia Minor by the US and work toward the final resolution of Cyprus’ illegal occupation by the Turkish Army. It is a long way to Tipperary, but the Armenian case shows there are no lost causes in international politics, only wrong or right timing.

Pope Francis donates medical equipment to Armenia

Pope Francis expresses his affection for the people of Armenia with a gift of medical equipment, including a new ambulance.

By Devin Watkins

The Pope’s representative in Armenia, Archbishop Jose Bettencourt, delivered a concrete sign of the Holy Father’s care and concern on Sunday.

The Apostolic Nuncio blessed a gift from Pope Francis for the Catholic “Redemptoris Mater” Hospital in the northern Armenian town of Ashotsk.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the gift consisted in a new ambulance equipped with the latest mobile medical equipment and emergency respirators to assist patients with Covid-19.

Archbishop Bettencourt, joined by Fr. Mario Cuccarollo—the director of the hospital, held a ceremony at the Ordinariate for Catholics of Armenian Rite in Eastern Europe.

The country’s Catholic Health Directorate also purchased additional medical equipment to test and treat Covid-19 patients for the hospital.

Armenia appears to be emerging from a third wave of coronavirus infections. The country’s population of over 3 million registered just 410 new cases over the past 24 hours.

Several Vatican organizations joined forces to facilitate the arrival of Pope Francis’ gift.

The “Good Samaritan Foundation”, a humanitarian agency which is part of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, as well as the Apostolic Nunciature in Armenia, took part in the gesture of mercy.

The Pope’s gift came a day after the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, which recalls the brutal murder of countless Armenian Christians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire during World War I.

The “Redemptoris Mater” hospital in Ashotsk is run by the Fathers of St. Camillus de Lellis, and provides heavily-subsidized healthcare for those in need, offering it free of charge for those who cannot pay.

The Camillians have been caring for people in the Southern Caucasus region for over 25 years.

ANKARA (Sputnik) – The leader of Turkey's right-wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahceli, on Tuesday called on the government to put the Russian-made S-400 air defence systems on combat duty in response to US President Joe Biden's official recognition of the 1915 massacre of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as a genocide.

"According to Article 11 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Biden committed a crime of inciting hatred. In response, our first task should be to activate the S-400 and demand a refund for F-35 [US fighters]. For us, relations with the United States are now at a historic crossroads", Bahceli said while speaking in parliament.

The MHP is in alliance with the ruling Justice and Development Party.

On 24 April the Armenian Remembrance Day, Biden said that "the American people honour all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today". Ankara, which denies committing the genocide, condemned the designation and called on Biden to reverse it for the sake of promoting the peaceful coexistence of peoples in the region.

Why Biden recognized the Armenian genocide

eKathimerini, Greece

Turkey’s relationship with the United States, the world’s most important country, the biggest economy, the country with the largest geopolitical influence and the one most of the rest of the states have many reasons to want her as a close ally, has been upset with Joe Biden’s decision to recognize the Armenian genocide.

With this action, the US sent the message that it doesn’t ascribe to Turkey the same importance that it held for decades in the eyes of all previous administrations. The alliance will continue, but the context will be different.

But why did this happen now? Mainly for three reasons:

First, President Biden has a very close relationship with the Armenian community in the US (same as he does with the Greek one) and there are some leaders that do keep their promises to the voters.

Second, Tayyip Erdogan’s behavior has rubbed the entire US political system the wrong way. With his anti-western rhetoric, the attacks on Israel, his special relationship with Putin, the Turkish President has achieved something not easy, turn both parties in the US against him.

His “friendship” with Donald Trump was personal and did not reflect the attitude of the majority of the Republican party toward him.

With the intense frustration developing in Washington for Erdogan’s behavior, mostly regarding the acquisition of the S-400 air-defense system from Russia, but also his moves on other fronts, such as Syria and, to a lesser extent, in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean, moves that the US opposes, the number of influential people in positions of power in Washington that are friendly to Ankara keeps decreasing.

The third reason that Joe Biden decided to recognize the Armenian genocide, maybe the most important, is the US President’s character and personality.

Biden is part of a rare breed of politicians who believe in principles and values, without this precluding his being realist, as shown in certain cases.

The US President believes that, in order for a country to be a real friend and ally to the US, and not a momentary partner, it must respect democratic freedoms and human rights and to follow rules in its international behavior, something it is now quite clear is not the case with the unpredictable Turkish President who envisages a “Great” Turkey, which would extent to the “borders of (his) heart.”

Beirut: 34 Scholarships Have Been Granted To Lebanese-Armenian Students In Need

The 961, Lebanon
April 16 2021

The AEF announced that it has awarded 34 scholarships so far, amounting to a total of $47,400.-

“These scholarships not only give an educational lifeline to Lebanese Armenian students, many of whom come from families that have been devastated by the blast in Lebanon, but it also gives them a reason to stay and settle in Armenia,” said the AEF President, Al Cabraloff.

In Lebanon, the struggle to survive continues and the families of the Beirut Blast victims still await an evading justice, while friendly countries are pressuring the officials to break the government formation deadlock, notably France and the United States.

Last week, a gallery opened in tribute to one of the Lebanese-Armenian victims, Gaïa Fodoulian. It was set up by Fodoulian’s mother, gallerist Anne Vartivarian, who sought to see her daughter’s project come to life.

As of yet, over eight months later, there is no official memorial by the state for the 200+ victims.

Canada cancels weapons sales to Turkey over Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict

Investigation by Ottawa concluded that Turkey deployed drones to Nagorno-Karabakh that used Canadian technology, foreign affairs minister says

Canada cancelled all defense exports to Turkey on Monday after an investigation found that Canadian technology was used in the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the country's foreign affairs minister said.

Ottawa suspended the sale of advanced drone optics and defence equipment last October amid allegations that Canadian technology was used by Azerbaijan, a key ally of Turkey, during six weeks of fierce fighting with Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Earlier on Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu voiced displeasure over the arms embargo during a call with his Canadian counterpart, Marc Garneau, and asked for a review.

"[The] Canadians told Turkish authorities that they weren't planning to lift the suspension of military export licences to Turkey, on the contrary, they would cancel all suspended military exports licences, even the ones issued in the past," one person familiar with the matter told Middle East Eye.

Later on Monday, Garneau announced that Canada conducted a thorough review of all suspended and valid export permits and would no longer sell military goods and technology to its NATO ally.

Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict: How Baku destroyed Russian S-300s with Israeli suicide drones

"Following this review, which found credible evidence that Canadian technology exported to Turkey was used in Nagorno-Karabakh, today I am announcing the cancellation of permits that were suspended in the fall of 2020," Garneau said in a statement.

Last year, Ottawa launched an investigation into whether Turkey had violated an end-user licence agreement by selling Turkish armed drones to Azerbaijan.

"This use was not consistent with Canadian foreign policy, nor end-use assurances given by Turkey," Garneau added.

Ottawa initially imposed an embargo in response to Turkey's military incursion into Syria in 2019. It partially backtracked on this decision last June and approved the sale of drone optics after high-level talks with Turkey. However, Canada suspended military exports after video footage indicated the use of Canadian-made Wescam optics in drones in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In 2019, Turkey purchased two Canadian Bombardier Global 600 type business aircraft to use as part of locally developed Remote Electronic Support/Electronic Attack Ability in Air Platform (HAVA SOJ).

A Turkish official said last year that Canada also stopped providing the required training and the transfer of know-how regarding the aircraft as part of an arms embargo.

A Canadian firm had also stopped supplying helicopter platforms needed for the national warship programme MILGEM. Turkey has also been importing engines for its Hurkus training aircraft from Pratt & Whitney Canada.
