YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 16, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s top seismologist is ruling out the possibility that the February 13 earthquake that hit Yerevan and the subsequent aftershocks were triggered by a biological weapon – a hypotheses which was put forward on social media.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations Seismic Protection Service chief Sos Margaryan said at a news conference that the earthquakes are tectonic tremors conditioned by Armenia’s geographic location on a seismic active zone.

“The given case was a magnitude 4,7 earthquake, which is a moderate intensity one,” he said, referring to the earthquake that rattled the Armenian capital on February 13.

“It’s close to the Yerevan Fault. I assure you, there can’t even be any talk about biological or any other kind of weapons, because this [fault] is a known source to us. It is even reflected in the seismic resistance construction requirement maps as a hazard zone. The 1937 Parakar earthquake was also close to this fault. What happened was a completely natural phenomenon,” he said.

The AYAC Center in Glendale before construction began on a second floor

The Board of Directors of the Armenian Youth Association of California announced this week that Harry Krikor Ayvazian donated $300,000 to the organization so it can complete the construction of a second floor to its headquarters in Glendale.

“We had announced earlier that Mr. Harry Krikor Ayvazian had stood by the association and made a handsome donation of $250,000 for the addition of the second floor to the association building. Today, with the utmost joy and gratefulness we are announcing that Mr. Ayvazian has decided to come to the rescue again and donate another $300,000.00 for the same purpose and to complete the work that was started,” explained the AYAC Board of Directors.

The construction began in the second half of 2020 and it is anticipated that it will be completed by the spring. Yet the expansion project posed new challenges for the AYAC, whose members and supporters participated in securing part of the sum necessary for the implementation of the work through their heartfelt donations for which the association is very grateful.

“The Board of Directors and the members of AYAC express their thanks and gratitude to Mr. Ayvazian for his two generous donations and pray that the Almighty grant him good health, success and long life to continue his benevolent work in helping the Armenian community and becoming an example for others to follow in keeping and advancing the Armenian culture,” said the AYAC Board.

Jivan Avetisyan: What can be more precious for us than Artsakh?

Panorama, Armenia
Feb 13 2021

Armenian filmmaker Jivan Avetisyan has been working on his new feature film entitled "Revival" since 2018, with some scenes of the movie filed in Artsakh. He is best known for his films about Artsakh, including “Tevanik”, “The Last Resident” and “Gates of Paradise.” Asked by a Panorama.am correspondent why he has focused on the specific topic, the director said: “What can be more precious for us than Artsakh? Many of us have sacrificed their lives for Artsakh, why shouldn’t we tell about it?”

Asked whether it makes any sense to continue the film shootings after the war, or they have already been suspended, Jivan Avetisyan said annoyed: “Artsakh needs us now more than ever before. We must talk more about it and work harder, stepping up our efforts – each of us in our job. Artsakh has not faded away after the war; we must not lose heart. And now our message should focus on the fact that the time of real victory is yet to come. I was still a little boy when I looked at Shushi atop the hills in our village – Khachmach. I saw Shushi both under fire and liberated.

If we had not believed that one day we would regain control of the town amid heavy shelling, perhaps we would not have done it. Even after the 1990s, the war was not over for our team: every day of our work we tried to help consolidate the victory. And our films of international production pursued precisely this goal – to present Artsakh to the world, the past and present of Armenians. Nevertheless, we have what we have. I do not understand people who try to escape reality. No matter how hard you run away, no matter how much you are distracted by the current trends, the time will come to find your identity, as it happens with the hero of our new film – Murat.

– So what is happening to him, what is the secret around which the story is unfolding?

– The main message of the film is returning home –  “home” in the broadest sense of the word. Wherever life throws you, no matter what happens to you, no matter how impossible it may seem to regain your lost identity, all the same, the time will come for you to find yourself.

“ Revival” is a story about love, self-search and self-discovery. In 1993, an incident happened in Artsakh that has not yet been forgiven by time, space, humanity or the universe. In the film it is necessary to return to this point and an Artsakh man named Murat, who grew up in France, is trying to find himself, his roots … it perhaps refers to the whole Armenian nation and the people. Just like our hero, Murat, who comes to Artsakh to find his identity, we, too, should try to find ourselves to figure out what happened and why.

I don’t want to go into the details of the script. I would like to only say that Narine Voskanyan originally worked on the film script. The film crew expanded in Berlin in 2019 when we started successful cooperation with German Jean Wagner, who joined our team as a script consultant. Then we collaborated with US-based Monique Peterson, who also joined us and is working on the dialogues for the film. We also managed to attract various producers from several countries interested in the film project.

As for the cast, some of the characters have already been clarified, while negotiations are underway with others. The cast includes actors both from Armenia and abroad. I would not like to reveal the names of foreign actors; there are many famous figures, simply the experience shows that every time Azerbaijan hears a new name, it begins to pressure and harass them, forcing the actors to go through psychological abuse; they even summon ambassados and issue ultimatums to them. I don’t reveal their names for now to ensure their safety.

– Doesn’t working with foreigners require large funds? In addition, it seems that the shooting of the film will not be limited to only Armenia. How do you raise funds?

– The events in the film take place in several countries: Israel, Iceland and France … yes, it definitely requires a big budget, but there are various funds that we are going to apply to. While collecting funds for the previous film, we gained experience which we will be using this time: it refers to support by various funds, individual investment donations, investments of co-producers, etc. We managed to raise nearly 40,000 dollars for the film “Gates to Heaven” through crowdfunding. In the near future, we plan to hold a crowdfunding campaign for "Revival".

– What do you think the Armenian audience needs? What message should be conveyed to the Armenian people?

– The Armenian audience, the Armenian people need sincere dialogue, they need the values they are the bearers of. We need to be brought to consciousness. We can’t give up. There is no place for apathy. It is forbidden not to dream, it is forbidden to lose faith. Everything is going to be fine.

U.S. calls on Turkey to immediately release jailed philanthropist Osman Kavala

Reuters
Feb. 10, 2021

(Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday called on Turkey to
immediately release philanthropist and human rights activist Osman
Kavala, who has been detained for more than three years without
conviction.

“The specious charges against Kavala, his ongoing detention, and the
continuing delays in the conclusion of his trial, including through
the merger of cases against him, undermine respect for the rule of law
and democracy,” the U.S. State Department said.

Kavala was acquitted a year ago of charges related to 2013
anti-government protests, but was immediately rearrested on charges
relating to a failed 2016 coup. An appeals court subsequently
overturned his acquittal on the protest charges.

A Turkish court ruled on Friday to combine the two outstanding cases
and rejected Kavala’s request to be released.

Kavala was accused by Turkey of collaborating with Henri Barkey, a
prominent U.S.-based Turkey scholar, and both men were charged with
attempting to overthrow the constitutional order.

An indictment alleged that Barkey had links to the network of
U.S.-based Turkish Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, which Ankara says
had orchestrated the coup attempt. Gulen denies involvement and Barkey
has said the charges are a “complete fabrication”.

“We also note with concern U.S. citizen Dr. Henri Barkey’s inclusion
in these unwarranted court proceedings. We believe the charges against
Dr. Barkey to be baseless”, the State Department said on Wednesday.

The State Department urged Turkey to abide by a European Court of
Human Rights ruling in late 2019 that Kavala be released.

Asbarez: Bright Armenia Party Demands Explanation About Secret Border Deal With Azerbaijan

February 12,  2021

YEREVAN (Azatutyun.am)—A major opposition party demanded on Friday explanations from the Armenian government over allegations that a controversial delimitation of Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan was the result of its secret agreement with Baku reached following the autumn war in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The delimitation followed Armenian troop withdrawals from border areas along Armenia’s southeastern Syunik province that began after a Russian-brokered ceasefire stopped the war on November 10.

Syunik borders the Zangelan and Kubatli districts southwest of Karabakh which were mostly recaptured by Azerbaijan during the six-week hostilities. Armenian army units and local militias completed in December their withdrawal from parts of the districts close to Syunik’s capital Kapan and many other communities.

Some of those lands are located along the Soviet-era Armenian-Azerbaijani border which has never been demarcated due to the Karabakh conflict. Local government officials in Syunik and opposition figures in Yerevan have accused Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of hastily and illegally ceding them to Baku. Pashinyan has insisted that “not a single inch” of Armenia’s internationally recognized territory has been lost as a result of the troop withdrawal.

Earlier this week, opposition sources posted on Facebook a copy of what they described as a secret Armenian-Azerbaijani agreement reached after the ceasefire. The purported document specifies, among other things, a section of Syunik’s main highway placed under Azerbaijani control.

Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan acknowledged on Wednesday that Yerevan and Baku reached an understanding on the highway passing through “disputed territory.” But he did not confirm or deny the veracity of the published document.

“If you look at that document you will see provisions that have been effectively implemented,” said Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the opposition Bright Armenia Party. “We therefore have reason to suspect that it is either the text of a verbal agreement or a signed document.”

Another senior Bright Armenia Party member, Taron Simonyan, said that the border agreement, if it was indeed signed, is null and void because it was not certified by Armenia’s Constitutional Court and ratified by the Armenian parliament.

Sisak Gabrielyan, a lawmaker representing the ruling My Step bloc dismissed the document as a fraud.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 9, ARMENPRESS. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the war, the Armenian high-tech industry’s turnover grew 20,6% in 2020, the Minister of High Tech Industry Hakob Arshakyan said in a news conference.

Arshakyan reminded that nevertheless the pandemic and the war hindered some projects. “But the high tech sector had a double digit growth in 2020. Turnover of companies grew 20,6% and amounted around 198 billion drams,” he said. The number includes exclusively high tech industry companies and doesn’t include communication operators.

The number of employees working in the sector grew 22%, reaching 18,747. The number of active companies also grew. 1228 active companies are operating in the high tech sector, and 192 new ones received certifications in 2020 and will benefit from the tax privileges defined by the ministry’s policy and law.

Speaking about startups of Armenian origin which operate scientific-research centers in Armenia, he said that these companies have attracted nearly 50 million dollars in investments in 2020, mostly from abroad. “This means that they created science-based products and companies in Armenia which were able to record the kind of results that became interesting for venture investors and other investors.

Taxes paid by high tech companies in 2020 grew 14%, surpassing 41 billion drams.

Arshakyan called on students seeking to obtain higher education to seek engineering professions, saying that this sector is growing rapidly in Armenia.

Too early to discuss status of Nagorno-Karabakh, says Medvedev – Russian Politics & Diplomacy

TASS, Russia

Dmitry Medvedev pointed out that the conflict sides have very different stances on the matter

GORKI, February 1. /TASS/. It is too early to discuss the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, as it may lead to an escalation of tensions, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said.

Medvedev pointed out that the conflict sides have very different stances on the matter, "even within Armenia, discussions are underway." "I would like to remind you that Armenia did not recognize the independence of Karabakh. For some reason, people are forgetting that, but this is true. So it would be better to move the discussion of its status for the future," he noted.
