Turkish press: Azerbaijani army finds minefield in eastern Lachin region

Burak Dag   |16.08.2022

BAKU, Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani army on Monday discovered a minefield in the eastern Lachin region, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

The army’s engineering units detected over 900 anti-personnel mines while conducting terrain reconnaissance in the “northwestern direction of the Saribaba high ground,” a ministry statement said.

It said that the mines, laid by "illegal Armenian armed detachments," were “neutralized” by a specialized team.

“All the mines detected in this direction were produced in Armenia after the Patriotic War, in 2021,” the statement said.

After an Azerbaijani soldier was killed as a result of the provocation carried out by the illegal Armenian forces in Karabakh on Aug. 3, the Azerbaijani army carried out a retaliatory measure called "revenge.”

"As a result of the 'revenge' retaliatory measure carried out by Azerbaijani Army Units, the Girkhgiz peak, as well as Saribaba along the Karabakh ridge of the Lesser Caucasus and a number of other important heights, were taken under control,” the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry had said on Aug. 4.

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh (Upper Karabakh), a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

During the conflict in fall 2020, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages that had been occupied by Armenia for nearly three decades.

A Russian-brokered deal in November 2020 brought an end to the conflict.

Take a trip to Jerusalem: Cooler, drier climate for Israel’s hot summer

Allow me to state the obvious: Summers are hot in Israel. Very hot. And yet in Jerusalem, where the climate is dry, the air can be much more comfortable – especially at night. If you have a 24-hour block of time available this summer, I highly recommend spending your next getaway in Jerusalem.

My recent trip to the capital began at the Montefiore Windmill in Mishkenot Sha’ananim, which overlooks the Old City. The windmill was originally built in 1858 as a flour mill, but today the site functions as a tourist attraction and includes a small museum. At the museum, you will learn about the story of Sir Moses Montefiore, who initiated and raised the money for the construction of the windmill.

The site also functions as a wine-tasting room and visitor center for the Jerusalem Vineyard Winery. The winery’s vineyards are spread all around Israel – including Samaria, Judea, the Jerusalem Hills and the Carmel. All the wines produced from these grapes can be tasted at the Jerusalem visitor center, along with light refreshments.

The Jerusalem Winery, which was founded in 1870, produces four million bottles of wine a year and offers five series, each of which includes between three and six strains. The wines, which have a mehadrin kashrut certification, have won many prizes.

Wine tasting: 20 minutes. NIS 30 per person.

Next on our itinerary was a special guided tour of the New Gate in the Old City. It is called thus since it is not quite as old as the other gates, which were constructed along with the outer wall in the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century, this newer gate was added at the behest of Christians who were hoping to alleviate travel for pilgrims making their way between the holy Christian sites inside the Christian Quarter and their residences north of the Old City, including the Russian Colony and the Chapel of Notre Dame. Up until then, the pilgrims would exit the Old City from either the Jaffa Gate or the Damascus Gate, but then in 1889, Sultan Abd Al-Hamid agreed to construct a new gate, as long as the gate would be named after him. (It was named after him, but the “New Gate” was the more popular name.)

Our tour of the Armenian Quarter was led by Yael Livni, who works with an organization called This Is Jerusalem, which is managed by Dana Hafzedi. During the tour, we were entranced by stories about the people who lived within the walls of the Old City in previous generations. Afterwards, we were offered tastes of delicacies from various Jewish communities.

Every Wednesday in August at 7:30 p.m., guests are treated to interesting lectures and fascinating performances. Every Thursday in August, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. there are children’s shows, street performances, creative workshops and a wide variety of activities for the whole family.

Details: www.thenewgate.co.il.

Just 120 meters from the New Gate, to the left, you’ll find the lovely shop owned by George and Doron Sandroni, who create handmade Armenian artisanal crafts. For 40 years, they have been using traditional methods, without any modern technology, to create tiles and kitchen crafts. Visitors are welcome to watch them work – it’s quite fascinating. And if you ask George about his personal story, he’ll be happy to tell you all about his life. Even better, you can join a two- or three-hour workshop and learn how to paint ceramic objects using age-old techniques. They’ll then place your piece in the kiln, after which you can take your work of art home.

Price: NIS 150 per personDetails: 050-599-1121

After finishing the Armenian artisanal craft workshop, we continued straight, and then turned left, where we encountered Elia Photo, a quaint shop that was established by Elia Kahvedjian. There, you’ll see historical photographs that were taken in Israel during its pre-state days. There are photos that extend from 1860 until the present time.

Kahvedjian, a genocide survivor from Armenia, was only five when he saw 163 family members murdered before his very eyes. American aid agencies gathered any orphaned children they found and sent them to orphanages around the world. That is how Kahvedjian ended up in Nazareth. One of his teachers at the orphanage was a photographer, and through him Kahvedjian learned photography. In his store, visitors can see photographs that were taken as far back as 1920.

When he turned 16, Kahvedjian moved to Jerusalem and opened up his own photography studio, which burned down in the 1948 riots. Luckily, he was forewarned about the attack and was able to escape to safety with his most precious photographs. In 1949, he reopened his business at 14 Ma’alot al-Hankah, where the shop is located to this day.

When we entered the shop, we noticed the pungent metallic-like odor of film developers, which immediately took me back to earlier days. Kahvedjian passed away at the age of 89, and since then, his grandson has been managing the business. On the walls of the shop, you can see photographs of famous figures, such as Ze’ev Jabotinsky and Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, as well as other figures who played a role in the establishment of the State of Israel. In short, a visit to Elia Photo is a must.

Details: (02) 628-2074

The tour of the Old City continued on to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where we heard fascinating stories, then for a lunch of tasty kebabs, and short stops at a number of quaint spice and gift shops along the way.

From there, we continued on toward the Inbal Hotel, one of the capital’s finest hotels, for a short rest and a dip in the pool. This was a fantastic way to cool down quickly. The spacious hotel offers high-quality service, and its breakfast spreads are incredible.

After our short rest, we attended the Food Truck Festival, taking place every Tuesday through Thursday until August 25, from 6-11 p.m. in the Hinnom Valley. Have a taste from a selection of food trucks, separated into dairy and meat sections (not too much available for vegetarians, unfortunately.) There is also a DJ spinning. Prices range from NIS 30-40. The evenings are organized by the Jerusalem and Heritage Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, Jerusalem Development Authority and Kapayim.

UN Official Deletes His Tweet on Armenian Genocide,
After Pressure from Turkey

            By Harut
Sassounian

            Publisher, The California Courier

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

The Turkish government resorted to its customary bullying tactics last week to
force a high-ranking United Nations (UN) official to delete his tweet on the
Armenian Genocide.

On July 27, President of the United Nations General Assembly
Abdulla Shahid issued a tweet with four photos showing him placing a wreath at
the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan.
He wrote in his tweet: “Laid a wreath at the Memorial to the Victims of
Armenian Genocide. Special thanks to Museum-Institute Director Harutyun
Marutyan & Hasmik Martirosyan for a tour of the Museum.” Marutyan presented
to the visitor books on the Armenian Genocide and showed him the three
cross-stones dedicated to the memory of Armenians who were killed by Azerbaijan.

 The wreath placed by
the UN General Assembly President had white and blue flowers and was decorated
with a blue ribbon with “United Nations” written on it. In the other photos of
his tweet, he was seen observing a moment of silence at the Eternal Flame of
the Memorial, taking a tour of the Armenian
Genocide Museum,
and signing the Guest Book in which he wrote: “I am very moved by my visit to
this museum. I thank you for warmly receiving me as a part of my visit to Armenia.”

During his three-day visit to Armenia, the President of the
UN General Assembly met with various Armenian officials, including the
President of Armenia Vahagn Khachatryan, Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum
Matevosyan, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Vice Chairman of the Parliament
Ruben Rubinyan, female diplomats of the Foreign Ministry, and spoke at the
graduation ceremony of the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic School.

Shortly after Shahid’s visit and tweet, the Turkish Foreign
Ministry issued an official statement condemning him for visiting the Armenian
Genocide Memorial and alleging that his trip “to Armenia has been exploited
with the purpose of exposing one-sided Armenian claims and it is in that
context that he paid a visit to the so-called genocide memorial.” The Turkish
Foreign Ministry added: “He would have been expected to act in a fair and
impartial manner, to be more careful and responsible in this regard.
Representatives acting on behalf of the UN authorized bodies must carry out
their duties in accordance with the UN legal instruments and relevant norms and
rules of international law, particularly the Convention on the Prevention and
Punishment of the Crime of Genocide dated 1948. We condemn and reject attempts
to distort historical facts and international law through political
manipulation. Türkiye is of the opinion that the facts regarding the events of
1915 should be dealt with in a full, fair and honest framework.”

Shahid, who is also the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Maldives, immediately deleted the tweet
about his visit to the Armenian Genocide Memorial, succumbing to Turkish
pressures.

Whereas the Turkish government had succeeded in imposing its
will on the UN official, not a single Armenian official who met with the
President of the UN General Assembly bothered to question him why he deleted
his tweet, let alone criticize him.

Of course, nothing can excuse the submissive behavior of the
high-ranking UN official who caved in to the directive of a dictatorial regime,
contrary to the UN principles that he was sworn to uphold. Two sources
confirmed some of the actions of the Turkish government: The Passblue.com
website disclosed that Turkey
rescinded its invitation to Shahid to visit Ankara. The Turkish Superhaber.tv further
revealed that Turkey
withdrew Shahid’s invitation to attend the Ambassadors’ Conference to be held
in Ankara on
August 8-12. Turkey
probably used other behind-the-scenes measures to pressure Shahid.

It is highly offensive that Shahid, by agreeing to delete
his tweet, disrespected the Armenian Genocide which had been corroborated by
the UN itself. On August 29, 1985, the UN “Sub-Commission on Prevention of
Discrimination and Protection of Minorities” adopted a report on genocide by a
vote of 15 in favor, 1 opposed, and 4 abstentions. The “Revised and Updated
Report on the Question of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of
Genocide” was prepared by British Special Rapporteur Benjamin Whitaker.
Paragraph 24 of that report stated: “The Nazi aberration has unfortunately not
been the only case of genocide in the twentieth century. Among other examples
which can be cited as qualifying are the German massacre of Hereros in 1904,
[and] the Ottoman massacre of Armenians in 1915-1916 ….” The report also
included an extensive bibliography on the Armenian Genocide. An earlier version
of that report, prepared by UN Special Rapporteur Nicodeme Ruhashyankiko of Rwanda, had
included in its paragraph 30 a reference to the Armenian Genocide which was
subsequently deleted after excessive pressure by the Turkish government. I know
these facts first-hand because I spent from 1978 to 1985 at the UN in Geneva as the
representative of a non-governmental organization on human rights, countering
the repeated Turkish attempts to delete the reference to the Armenian Genocide.

 The Armenian
government may not be aware of these facts. I suggest that the Armenian Foreign
Ministry file a strongly-worded complaint with the Secretary-General of the
United Nations to have the deleted tweet reinstated and apologize to the
Armenian nation.

2-         Baseball Hall of Fame honors
Tim Kurkjian with Career Excellence Award

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y.—The love affair
that ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian has enjoyed for decades with the sport of baseball—and
everyone associated with it—reached its pinnacle on Saturday when he was
honored as this year’s recipient of the BBWAA Career Excellence Award.

“This has been the most overwhelming, most overpowering
experience of my life,” Kurkjian said during his speech.

In accepting the award, which is presented annually to a sportswriter
“for meritorious contributions to baseball writing,” Kurkjian takes his place
alongside the list of heroes, mentors and friends who have been previously
honored.

Baseball was the “primary language spoken” in the Kurkjian
household and has been a key thread in the fabric of his life, tracing back to
his baseball-loving father and two older brothers who played for Catholic University. A native of Bethesda,
Maryland, Kurkjian played baseball and
basketball at Walter
Johnson High
School — named after the Hall of Famer pitcher.
While there, he wrote for the school paper called “The Pitch.”

Kurkjian was honored during a private ceremony at the Alice
Busch Opera Theater at Glimmerglass Festival outside of Cooperstown.

Kurkjian, 65, has authored three books about baseball and
his experiences in it. His professional career began in 1979, when he joined
the Washington Star. By 1981, he was covering the Texas Rangers for the Dallas
Morning News, followed by a four-year stint covering the Orioles for the Baltimore Sun.

After seven-plus years with Sports Illustrated, Kurkjian
joined ESPN in 1998. Since then, he has worked as a columnist and become a
prominent part of ESPN’s broadcast coverage of baseball. He has been a fixture
at Baseball Tonight, contributed to SportsCenter and worked as a reporter and
analyst during game broadcasts. Kurkjian has twice been honored for his work in
television.

Kurkjian has transcended his long and a varied résumé simply
by becoming one of the most beloved figures in the baseball world and a person
who exudes a bonafide joy of the game. The son of a mathematician, Kurkjian has
long been known for his meticulous work habits.

Kurkjian has become as known for his relentless positivity
and generosity as for his skill in writing and broadcasting, not to mention an
encyclopedic knowledge of baseball, about which no tidbit was trivial in
Kurkjian’s eyes.

Kurkjian’s love affair with baseball is ongoing and it
reached an all-new level on Saturday, when Kurkjian earned a permanent place
among the immortals of the sport.

“Baseball is the greatest game, it is the best game of all
time,” Kurkjian said. “It is the hardest game in the world to play. It is a
beautiful game and the number of people I have met in this game over a number
of years who will be my friends for the rest of my life.”

4-         ‘Armenia Without Nikol’, Resistance
Movement Marches On

YEREVAN—On  July 29, the rally of “Resistance” movement
marched on, starting once again in Yerevan’s
France Square.

“This struggle is not political, this is not for someone,
this is a struggle for the homeland, and victory is very close. Those who
gossip about this struggle will not be able to look their children in the eyes
tomorrow, our path is straight, victory is near,” said Narek Mantashyan, who
spent 7 months in a detention center, and wished freedom to the other political
prisoners who remain in detention.

During the rally, it was announced that three young people
affiliated with the “Resistance” movement, who were arrested in the case of
allegedly beating the “grandfathers” of Gyumri, were released on bail. Taron
Manukyan and Gor Sargsyan will continue to remain in custody.

“We came out to fight not only for our security, to remain
Armenian, to protect our homeland, but also to live well in our homeland. This
government of the “Apikars” not only surrenders our homeland, but also leads to
Turkification, it does everything to make the Armenian person live worse every
day in his/her homeland, because this government has no national goal, no
national dream. Their dream is only to keep their seats,” saod Tadevos
Avetisyan, member of the National Assembly from the “Armenia” faction, in his speech

“The EU ambassador to Armenia
says that there are supposedly no political prisoners in Armenia. It is
a statement detached from reality and supporting today’s authorities,” stated
Aram Vardevanyan, another member of the National Assembly from the “Armenia”
faction.

According to him, the leaders of the day will not apply
amnesty, because they spread widespread fear in order to cling to their seats.

Hayk Mamijanyan, a member of the National Assembly from the
“I havehonor” (Pativ Unem) faction, said in his speech that “the document being
developed between the EU and Azerbaijan does not say anything about Armenian
prisoners of war, there is not even a word that they are kept in inhumane
conditions in Azerbaijan.”

According to him, even the RA Foreign Ministry does not
mention the status of Artsakh and the right of self-determination of nations in
its official messages.

“There is no state today. All structures have been usurped
by the traitor Nikol and his henchmen,” said Ishkhan Saghateyan, the
representative of the ARF Supreme Body of Armenia.

He also mentioned that the opposition had set before it the
task of removing the current authorities in a short time, but, unfortunately, Armenia still
continues to be led by Nikol Pashinyan.

“But if the struggle is prolonged, it should not be
depressed, but rather we need to record the gaps, solve the problems and move
forward. We should make the struggle our daily routine. We must reorganize,
mobilize our forces and go after victory. We are guided by that principle,”
Saghatelyan said.

He emphasized that if the opposition participates in the
parliament, it will only be with the agenda formed by the people; the removal
of the current Prime Minister of Armenia, to fight against the threats facing Armenia and
Artsakh.

“The majority group in the National Assembly cannot drag us
into its anti-patriotic and anti-national conspiracy by blackmailing us to
deprive us of mandates. The CP backpacks (parliament members from Pashinyan’s
party) will see the back of their own heads, but they will not see us in the
parliament participating in their fake agenda. Unfortunately, the Armenian
people no longer have a platform for united _expression_ other than the street
and this square. Our street struggle at this moment has no alternative,” said
Saghatelyan.

According to Saghatelyan, the government still continues to
carry out political persecutions.

“Many of our comrades in struggle are currently in prison as
political prisoners. But they are much freer than those who gave the order to
detain our boys,” said Saghatelyan.

“Unity, Struggle, Victory” chanted the participants of the
rally.

Then the march of the “Resistance” movement started and the
participants walked through the central streets of Yerevan,
returning to the “France”
square where the rally ended. Touching upon the upcoming activities of the
movement, Saghatelyan stated that there will be regional visits in August.
According to him, the regional councils have already been formed.

A pan-Armenian resistance forum is planned for the middle of
August, to which well-known political figures and intellectuals from Armenia,
Artsakh, Diaspora will be invited. According to Saghatelyan, a rally will be

Azerbaijan is Turkey’s “red line” in its normalization talks with Armenia

Turkey is coordinating with Azerbaijan on negotiations to normalize its relations with Armenia, Turkish authorities said this week.

“Azerbaijan has been our red line from the beginning. We have said that we will open our doors after problems with Azerbaijan are solved,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Turkish state television on July 25.

Talks between Turkey and Armenia to establish bilateral relations have been ongoing since December 2021. On July 1, 2022, special envoys appointed for the normalization process announced the first major breakthrough in negotiations. The envoys agreed to “enable the crossing of the land border between Armenia and Turkey by third-country citizens.” They also agreed to commence direct air cargo trade between the two countries.

The Armenia-Turkey border has been closed since 1993, when Turkey closed the border in solidarity with Azerbaijan during the first Artsakh War. In the course of the current negotiations, Armenian authorities have been insistent that the normalization process must remain separate from ongoing talks with Azerbaijan on a resolution of the Artsakh conflict.

On July 11, in another breakthrough, Erdogan and Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan held their first ever phone conversation, during which they “expressed their expectation for the early implementation” of the agreement to partially reopen the border.

In his comments this week, Erdogan echoed Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who several days earlier said that talks on normalizing relations between Turkey and Armenia take place in a “tripartite format” with Azerbaijan.

“We coordinate every step with Azerbaijan. Whether Armenia likes it or not, this is the reality. We are one nation and two states. That is why if there is to be peace in the region, everybody needs to take steps, including Georgia and Central Asian countries,” Cavusoglu told Turkish state television on July 21.

Erdogan and Cavusoglu also both suggested that Armenia has not taken “concrete steps” toward normalization of relations with Turkey.

“I am glad Pashinyan shares our view on regional peace and partnership. We now expect that apart from making statements Yerevan will take concrete steps in the settlement process,” Erdogan said. “We have the goal of full normalization and establishing good neighborly relations.”

Cavusoglu blamed the lack of “concrete steps” from Armenia on pressure from the Armenian diaspora and domestic factions.

“We want to see in practice how sincere Armenia is. So far there are messages, and there are explanations. There’s also pressure, it’s true. The diaspora from the outside, fanatic groups from the inside,” Cavusoglu said.

“We don’t yet see clear steps from Armenia on the Zangezur and other projects or the peace treaty,” the Turkish foreign minister added.

Turkish leaders have reiterated Azerbaijan’s demand for the creation of a Zangezur corridor. The route would connect Azerbaijan to its exclave the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic through Syunik, the southernmost province of Armenia that also borders Iran.

Civil Contract Party MP and chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign relations Eduard Aghajanyan said Cavusoglu’s statement did not amount to a precondition to the normalization process.

“I think that statement was not a precondition. Turkey has always come out with this position, which obviously had never been acceptable to us,” Aghajanyan told reporters.

Iranian leaders have been vocal in their opposition to the creation of a Zangezur corridor.

While Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “expressed his satisfaction with Nagorno-Karabakh’s return to Azerbaijan” as a consequence of the 2020 Artsakh War during a meeting with Erdogan in Tehran on July 19, he also warned the Turkish president against blocking the historically significant Armenia-Iran border.

“If there is an effort to block the border between Iran and Armenia, the Islamic Republic will oppose it because this border has been a communication route for thousands of years,” Khamenei said

Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Shamkhani previously affirmed Iran’s support of Armenian sovereignty over a route connecting Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan through Syunik during a meeting with Pashinyan in Yerevan on July 7.

“Ali Shamkhani emphasized that Iran considers any attempt to change the geopolitical situation in the region unacceptable and noted that his country also supports the process of unblocking infrastructure within the framework of preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states,” a statement released by the Armenian prime minister’s office reads

The United States has expressed strong support for the ongoing talks between Armenia and Turkey. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken “welcomed the telephone conversation” between Pashinyan and Erdogan and “expressed the readiness of the US to support the normalization of relations between the two countries” during a phone call with Pashinyan on July 25.

Meanwhile, Turkish diplomat and special envoy appointed for Armenia-Turkey normalization process Serdar Kılıç visited the Armenia-Turkey border on July 24. Kılıç, accompanied by a delegation of Turkish leaders, visited the city of Kars, the Doğu Kapı border checkpoint and the ruins of Ani. An Israeli company has been conducting demining on the Turkish side of the border, according to Turkish media reports. The Armenian Defense Ministry said that Armenia has not been conducting demining on its side of the border.

According to a recent report from the International Crisis Group, Armenian authorities want to “press ahead as fast as possible” with the negotiation process, “for fear that history may repeat itself and normalization grind to a halt.”

“If Ankara can move quicker carrying out its final part of the first agreements on border crossings and air cargo, it will reassure Yerevan that there is more to come,” senior South Caucasus analyst Olesya Vartanyan wrote.

Yet Vartanyan added that Armenia should be patient, considering that even “small agreements on air cargo and border crossings for foreigners are significant” considering the current geopolitical context.

“The Armenian representatives are right to say that they need to seize the moment, as a lack of concrete steps now could doom to failure their hopes for eventual normalization at a time of rising conflict around the world,” Vartanyan wrote. “But a ‘small step’ strategy seems to be the only one possible at the moment.”

International analyst: Transnational companies’ engagement is necessary for Armenia

NEWS.am
Armenia –

About 100 companies make up to 70 percent of the global GDP. In order to increase the participation of Armenia in the system of creation of international products, it is necessary to ensure the engagement of transnational companies. International analyst Henry Laundell stated about this while speaking at Friday’s presentation of the roadmap for Armenia’s investment reform—and developed by the USAID program on improving the business climate of the country.

In this context, as the analyst noted, it is extremely important to strengthen those companies that are focused on exporting their products not only to the countries of the region, but also beyond.

According to Laundell, it is necessary to study the potential of existing companies, to direct them to cooperation with transnational companies—and by combining activities or using existing networks. According to him, this will enable the participation of local companies in the international economy.

In addition, as per the analyst, the Armenian diaspora should be included in the implementation of investment programs in Armenia.

The engagement of transnational companies will contribute to the increase of high-wage jobs in Armenia, as well as to the development of technology and regional development of the country, Laundell added.

According to him, the aforesaid roadmap allocates a significant place also to the investments being made in the provinces of Armenia.
