YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Sri Lankan MPs have elected prime minister Ranil Wickeremesinghe as the country's new president, despite his unpopularity with the public, BBC reports.

Wickremesinghe faces the task of leading the country out of its economic collapse and restoring public order after months of mass protests.

He roundly defeated party rival Dullus Alahapperuma, with 134 votes to 82 in the parliamentary vote on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka's ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country last week after thousands of protesters stormed his presidential residences and other government buildings, calling for his resignation.

They had also called for Mr Wickremesinghe's resignation, who was appointed prime minister in May. Protesters burnt down his private home and also stormed his prime ministerial office in Colombo in demonstrations against his leadership.

Newspaper: Internal troops no longer to be sent to border

NEWS.am
Armenia –

YEREVAN. – Past daily of Armenia writes: After the revolution of 2018, in July, the government made a political decision that internal police troops should be sent to the border.

Although "participating in the defense of the country" is also included in the list of issues under the "Internal Troops" law, the former authorities did not do this, on the contrary, they were used to suppress internal political issues and especially rallies.

Coming to power in 2018, Nikol Pashinyan announced that everything is changing, the police should not be a body that protects the authorities and solves internal political problems, but should serve the country and the society, and took a bold step: he personally attended the first shift of police officers with a solemn ceremony. Starting from 18 September, policemen guarded the border in 15-day shifts.

We were informed that months ago this decision was canceled; internal troops are no longer sent to the border, even soldiers are not sent from Armenia to Artsakh, but after the war, the same officers continued to perform service at the borders of Armenia from time to time. Now it's finally stopped."

Iran supports peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict: FM

July 4 2022

TEHRAN: /DNA/ – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has reiterated Tehran’s support for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on principles of the international law.

“In today’s talks, the issue of the territorial integrity of countries, including the Republic of Azerbaijan, was once again emphasized by us. We also reaffirmed our support for the peaceful settlement of the ongoing Karabakh conflict based on the well-known principles of the international law,”  Amir-Abdollahian said at a joint press conference with the visiting Azerbaijani Foreign Minister JeyhunBayramov in Tehran on Monday.

“Since the beginning of the Karabakh dispute, the Islamic Republic has always declared its readiness to help resolve the conflict through dialogue. We are still ready to continue our support and assistance in this regard, so that the remaining issues would be resolved on the basis of respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the involved parties and through political dialogue,” he added.

Also in his remarks, Amir-Abdollahian said the Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan have cleared up all previous misunderstandings between the two neighboring Muslim countries.

The regime, he said, had used the flare-up of the latest tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region in 2020 to establish a presence in parts of Azerbaijan.

Tensions started to flare up after Azerbaijan’s president criticized military exercises by the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces in the northwestern part of the country. Tehran hit back by saying that holding drills is part of the national sovereignty, warning that Israel’s anti-Iran activities in neighboring countries will not be tolerated.

But later Azerbaijan released the two Iranian truck drivers whose arrest had strained ties between Baku and Tehran.

The move marked a thaw between the two countries a week after their foreign ministers agreed to resolve the issue through dialogue.

Elsewhere in his Monday remarks, Amir-Abdollahian touched on the promotion of bilateral ties and said that the volume of their bilateral trade has increased dramatically in the past months.

“Over the past 10 months, we have clarified misunderstandings and we are in the phase of the promotion of increasing relations,” he said.

He added that the volume of trade between the two countries has witnessed a big jump in the past months, and expressed hope that the two countries’ public and private sectors will take further steps toward increasing the volume of bilateral trade.

“During today’s negotiations, a wide range of bilateral issues were thoroughly discussed and relevant viewpoints exchanged. As you know, the presidents of the two countries have had two one-on-one meetings in the last 10 months. During the meetings, especially in last week’s meeting between IlhamAliyev and [his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim] Raeisi, constructive and forward-looking talks on a new phase of mutual ties between the two countries were held,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

“We stressed the need for deepening the relations between the two countries on the basis of understanding, trust and mutual interests,” the Iranian foreign minister added.

The top Iranian diplomat stressed that various existing diplomatic formats between two or more countries should be seriously taken into consideration given unfolding developments and new conditions.

Amir-Abdollahian went on to note that he had tabled a proposal on hosting a tripartite foreign ministerial meeting between Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey in Tehran during his last week meeting with his Turkish counterpart MevlutCavusoglu in Ankara.

Amir-Abdollahian also extended the Iranian president’s invitation to Aliyev to visit Tehran, emphasizing that consultations are underway to determine the timing of the trip.

Bayramov, for his part, said that he had fruitful talks with Iranian officials during Monday’s talks on matters of mutual interest as well as regional issues.

“Our bilateral trade volume grew by 30% last year,” the Azerbaijani foreign minister pointed out. He, however, noted that Tehran and Baku needed to further bolster ties as they enjoy great economic and trade potential.

He also said that his country has reached an argument with Iran to make joint cars and tractors, adding that cooperation on building dams and power plants is also among top priorities for the two neighbors.

Asbarez: Elen Asatryan Makes History with Glendale City Council Victory

Newly-elected Glendale City Councilmember Elen Asatryan

GLENDALE–Elen Asatryan was elected to the Glendale City Council, finishing second in a field of eight candidates and becoming the city’s first immigrant, first Armenian-American and youngest woman to be elected to the council. She will take her oath of office on Tuesday, July 12 at 8 p.m. inside the Glendale City Hall Council Chambers.

Asatryan, 39, received 13,165 votes, surpassing by a wide margin former mayors Ara Najarian and Vrej Agajanian and broke historic record in Glendale by garnering more votes than the two incumbents as a newcomer in a race with no open seats.

“From south to north and east to west, Glendalians opened their homes, small businesses, and hearts because we share the same vision and hope for the future of our Jewel City. I am grateful for your faith and trust in me to be your voice in city hall and for the tremendous outpouring of support,” said Asatryan.
“It is an honor to have earned a seat that will allow me to represent the wonderful mosaic of people that make up Glendale.”

“We’re writing a new story for Glendale — powered by courage and empathy. We’ll continue working together to build a city that works for all of us and a city hall that is truly the house of the people.  Our residents and small businesses will receive the support they need and deserve, as we proactively tackle our many challenges. I look forward to building bridges and working towards making Glendale a model city to live, work and play in,” added Asatryan.

Asatryan ran a true grassroots campaign, distinguishing herself by hosting more public events than all other city council campaigns combined and earning endorsements from a long list of organizations, elected officials and community leaders. Her campaign galvanized the largest number of donors and raised the most money of all the candidates in the field, while rejecting money from PACs or special interest groups.

Asataryan’s passion for the issues and refusal to participate in negative campaigning inspired a diverse group of Glendale residents to get out and vote during a low-turnout election.

“We proved that people power always prevails in the end, and there is no substitute for honest and authentic campaigning. We unapologetically stayed true to ourselves, stood firmly by our values and our principles, and never resorted to petty politics and destructive tactics despite the hurricane of negativity we braved,” Asatryan said. “I’m very proud of the positive and sincere campaign we ran and very grateful to all who made our collective victory possible. I would also like to thank all the candidates who had the courage to step forward and bring their ideas to the table.”

Asatryan’s priorities for Glendale include: establishing a proactive city hall culture; smart development that incorporates green spaces, affordable housing, sustainability, the arts, and walkable and safe streets; small business recovery & support; overhaul of inefficient & costly permitting processes; promoting dynamic arts, music, & culture; a youth voice on commissions; Citizen’s Ethics Commission; community outreach that engages ALL residents and a workforce that is reflective of the diverse communities it serves.

“There shouldn’t be so many firsts in 2022. I hope this win inspires and shows women and little girls that they have a place in government and politics. I am committed to doing my part to help pave the way,” Asatryan added.

Born in Armenia, Asatryan moved to Glendale with her family at the age of 10 and attended Columbus Elementary, Toll Middle, and Herbert Hoover High schools.  She brings to the council over two decades of service to the Glendale community and beyond, and her professional background in policy, advocacy, and public affairs.

Armenian expert: By the same ‘logic’ Shirvanshah’s Palace in Baku is Iranian

Panorama
Armenia – July 7 2022

POLITICS 17:14 07/07/2022 REGION

Armenian expert on Iran Vardan Voskanyan on Thursday hit back at an Azerbaijani historian who echoed the false claims that the Blue Mosque in Yerevan is allegedly Azerbaijani.

“The main "argument" is that the khan of Yerevan who built the mosque was of Turkic origin, while most of the Muslim residents of the city at that time were Turkic speaking people,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Even if we put aside the fact that neither the Yerevan khan nor the Muslims could ever imagine that they would be called Azerbaijanis, the funny thing is that by this very "argument" it turns out that the Shirvanshah's Palace in Baku with all its structures, including the mosques, is not Azerbaijani, because the Shirvanshahs were a Persianized dynasty of Arabic origin and the Muslim population of the city at the time were exclusively Caucasian Persians (Tats).

“Therefore, by the same "logic" the said architectural complex in Baku is not Azerbaijani, but Iranian,” he wrote, sharing a photo of the palace.
