Erdogan slammed, will open a fascist ‘Grey Wolves’ school in occupied Artsakh

Anti-fascist forces in Turkey blasted authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s links to right-wing paramilitary death squads today after reports that he will open a new Grey Wolves school in occupied Nagorno-Karabakh.

He will lay the foundation for the building alongside Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in the city of Shushi, which was taken by Azeri forces in November 2020 after a three-day battle.

Turkey’s neofascist Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli pitched the idea earlier this year, but the school’s construction is seen as a deeply provocative move as the Grey Wolves have been responsible for the extrajudicial killings of minorities, including Armenians. Until the Azeri invasion, the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh had been run by its Armenian majority since 1994.

A spokesman for Turkey’s United Fighting Forces (BGM), a newly formed coalition of communist and leftist parties that includes Figen Yuksekdag’s Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), Partizan, and the Revolutionary Party, condemned the move.

“The Grey Wolves are a dark stain on Turkey’s blood-soaked history and responsible for the massacre of thousands of Kurds, Alevis and minorities, and attacks on trade unionists, communists, and progressives,” he said.

“Tayyip Erdogan and his fascist alliance will be defeated by a united struggle of all layers of the oppressed, There is a big explosion of anger against fascism seen in the struggle at Bogazici [university] — but also at the deepening economic crisis which is pushing more into poverty.”

The Grey Wolves organization is seen as the paramilitary wing of the MHP, responsible for thousands of deaths in Turkey. Funded and trained by the CIA as part of the Operation Gladio “stay behind movements” after World War II, it targets leftist movements and those that deviate from its strict Sunni Islamic ideals.

The group’s most notorious attack came in December 1978, when more than 100 of the country’s Alevi community were killed in a 10-day pogrom known as the Maras Massacre, which led directly to the 1980 military coup.

Grey Wolves founder Alparslan Turkes had strong links with the so-called “founding father” of the World Uighur Congress, Isa Yusuf Alptekin. They both campaigned for the eradication of communism among the Turkic populations of Soviet Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Grey Wolves set up training camps for young people in central Asia, but having failed to attract support, the group moved to China’s Xinjiang province, where it targeted recruitment among the Uighur community and supported the East Turkestan independence movement.

COAF Provides Emergency Aid for Displaced Families from Artsakh

February 19,  2021

YEREVAN — In the framework of the EU funded “Emergency Aid for Displaced Families from Nagorno Karabakh” RRM action implemented by the Children of Armenia Fund 150 displaced families will receive support.

Through the 60,000 Euro Action, 150 displaced families currently residing in COAF beneficiary villages of the Aragatsotn, Armavir, Lori, Shirak, and Tavush regions will be provided with aid packages (including food, winter clothes, hygiene and health supplies) and 450 children will receive stationary.

Thanks to the contribution of the Lithuanian Embassy in Armenia intended for the population affected by the conflict, 35 children will receive tablets, and 70 children will receive school bags and stationary. In addition, 150 families will benefit from the psycho-social, health, and speech therapy services, upon need. The distribution of the aid packages will be completed by the end of February 2021.

On February 11, EU Ambassador to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin and the Ambassador of Lithuania in Armenia Inga Stanytė-Toločkienė visited the COAF Yerevan office, where the parcels for displaced families were being prepared for distribution.

“COAF highly values this special partnership with the EU Delegation in Armenia. It is not the first project we are implementing together to react to a crisis. After our successful partnership in supporting rural families to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, we now stand by the displaced families from Nagorno Karabakh who found shelter in our beneficiary communities,” highlighted COAF Managing Director Korioun Khatchadourian.

“This is the European Union’s second cooperation with COAF under the Rapid Response Mechanism. I hope that together we are managing to ease the difficult situation of many people who lost their homes or were otherwise affected by the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh. As usual, it is our pleasure to cooperate with help those who need it the most,” mentioned EU Ambassador to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin.

The ultimate objectives of the Action include covering the immediate needs of the displaced families, as well as providing policy recommendations to the RA Government-level decision makers to address the future needs of the displaced families.

The Action is implemented in partnership with the Armenia’s Labor and Social Affairs Ministry and is coordinated with the regional administration offices and local municipalities to identify the families from Nagorno Karabakh in the target villages and exclude the possibility of duplication of the aid provided to the same family.

The Member States of the European Union have decided to link together their know-how, resources and destinies. Together, they have built a zone of stability, democracy and sustainable development whilst maintaining cultural diversity, tolerance and individual freedoms. The European Union is committed to sharing its achievements and its values with countries and peoples beyond its borders.

The Children of Armenia Fund (COAF) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that employs community-led approaches aimed at improving the quality of life in rural Armenia, with a particular focus on children and youth. COAF’s target development areas are education, healthcare, social and economic development. COAF launched its programs in 2004, starting in one village and expanding to 64 villages in Armavir, Aragatsotn, Lori, Gegharkunik, Shirak, and Tavush regions, impacting more than 107,000 beneficiaries.

Since 2015, COAF has been implementing the SMART Initiative. COAF SMART is designed to advance a generation across the rural world through education that will benefit individuals, societies, and the environment. As an exemplary model, COAF SMART will be replicated in other regions and communities throughout Armenia. The first COAF SMART Center was inaugurated on May 27, 2018, near the village of Debet, Lori Region.

CivilNet: Aliyev Hands Over Five More Armenian POWs, May Still Hold Hundreds

9 February, 2021 23:48

On February 9, a Russian military plane took one Azerbaijani to Baku and brought five more Armenian prisoners of war to Yerevan, Sputnik Armenii reports. According to the list published by 168.am, two of the prisoners were known to have been captured since October 12, three other names may not have been published before.

The bulk of Armenian prisoners being now held in Azerbaijan were captured in mid-December, after the November 10 cease-fire. Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev has previously called them “terrorists” and refused to hand them over. The Azerbaijani civilian exchanged was detained prior to the war, for illegally crossing into Armenia.

The day before, Russia’s ambassador in Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin promised to secure the release of Armenian prisoners and said that president Vladimir Putin was personally involved in the effort.

The release came as the Armenian government stopped deploying conscripted Armenian soldiers into Artsakh, in line with Aliyev’s demands. In the past, conscripts in Armenia would be posted to various locations throughout the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh, on the basis of a lottery. As Sputnik Armenii reported, during the military draft now underway, Artsakh locations have been removed from the lottery options.

Aside from the five just released, Azerbaijan may be holding as many as 223 other Armenian military prisoners and civilian hostages, including women. This is according to Siranush Sahakyan, the lawyer working on behalf of the prisoners’ families.

However, it remains unclear how many of these 223 individuals taken prisoner remain alive as there have also been reports of widespread torture and execution of Armenian prisoners, both during and after the war. Azerbaijani officials acknowledged holding about 60 Armenian prisoners, not counting the ten released in the last two weeks.

In early January, an Azerbaijani official noted that Armenia was holding two Azerbaijani civilians. Both were detained for illegally crossing into Armenia in the spring of 2020. One of them was released on January 28, and the second on February 9. Armenia is also holding two Turkish Syrian mercenaries captured in Artsakh during the war, but Armenian officials have so far refused to use them for exchanges and Azerbaijan refuses to acknowledge their existence.

Armenian American producer Natalie Qasabian’s ‘Run’ Wins 2021 Sundance Institute/Amazon Studios Award

Public Radio of Armenia
Feb 3 2021

Armenian American film producer Natalie Qasabian has been awarded the 2021 Sundance Institute/Amazon Studios Producers Award for Fiction Filmmaking  for her film, Run. The awards honor bold vision and a commitment to continuing work as a creative producer in the independent space, DEADLINE reports.

Qasabian’s husband Sev Ohanian won the award two years ago for his work on Searching, which they produced together. Qasabian was presented by the award with her frequent collaborator, director Aneesh Chaganty (Searching, Run).

“As producers, we may doubt whether or not we can do something: but we can’t ever doubt if it’s worth doing,” Qasabian said in accepting the award.

“If we don’t cast the people that haven’t been cast before, if we don’t hire the crew member that hasn’t been hired before, tell the story that hasn’t been told before, or work with that first-time director who’s never been produced before…we’ll never know what could be on the other side. So, thank you again to the Sundance Institute and Amazon Studios for recognizing a job that we ourselves doubt sometimes. It helps us see what can be on the other side if we can just push through,” she added.

Qasabian produced Run with Ohanian from a script co-written by Ohanian and director Chaganty. The film starred Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen for Lionsgate, which premiered on Hulu in Fall 2020 and became the most-watched film on the platform.

Previously, Qasabian produced Searching (Sundance 2018), directed by Chaganty, which was released by Sony. Searching was made on a sub-one-million-dollar budget and grossed $75M+ at the box office.

Armenia ex-President Kocharyan’s office calls on supporters not to protest outside court

News.am, Armenia
Feb 2 2021

It is again Tuesday, and another court session on the case of Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan and several other former senior officials will take place today.

Will Kocharyan attend this court hearing? And is another demonstration by his supporters expected outside the court?

Yerevan.Today asked these questions to Bagrat Mikoyan, the coordinator of the office of the second president.

"Yes, the President will attend the session, but we ask all our friends and teammates not to hold a protest in front of the court building. I believe that this trial being a farce is a long-proven fact, and [therefore] there is no need to endanger the health in this cold weather to record it once again," Mikoyan said.
