Sports: Barry Coffey looking to prolong his Armenian adventure

Barry Coffey was sent out to Armenia with Celtic’s blessing – and now he wants to prolong his stay away from the Bhoys.

The midfielder, who hails from Nenagh, made two first-team appearances for Neil Lennon’s side during their pre-season trip to Austria.

So Lennon might have been tempted to hold Coffey back from international duty.

However, the Parkhead chief was happy to hand the Tipperary native over to Ireland Under-19 boss Tom Mohan.

And a win on Sunday night against the Czech Republic would keep him in Yerevan until the semi-finals next Wednesday at the very least.

“I didn’t know if I was coming or not, because pre-season was coming to an end,” said the talented teenager.

“But I think they (Celtic) wanted me here as well, it’s a big experience for me, it brings me on. It’s good for them as well, so it’s kind of a win-win.

“It’s playing for your country, you can’t really turn down that opportunity.”

Midfielder Coffey came on in the second-half of Ireland’s defeat to France.

Despite their late heartache on Thursday night, a win against the Czechs should be enough to see the Boys in Green through to the last-four.

A draw could also be enough – if France make it three wins out of three when they take on Norway at the same time.

Confidence, according to Coffey, is high within the Irish camp.

“We’ll take positives from the (France) game as well and bring that into Sunday and hopefully go from there,” he said.

And head coach Tom Mohan added: “We are back fully focused on the Czech Republic game.

“We have watched them play in their qualifying games and both of their group games.

“We will have a gameplan in place and the players will be ready for this next challenge.

"We all know what is at stake on Sunday and this group of players are determined to get a victory on the board.

“We will not be underestimating Czech Republic, who also have everything to play for. It should be a good game and it is one that we are looking forward to.”

Gomez: I wanted to visit the memorial complex and honor the Genocide victims

Former Portugal striker Nuno Gomez has arrived to Armenia for a two-day visit at the invitation of Feed Constracut.

The former player has visited Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenian Genocide memorial and museum, and paid tribute to the victims of the Genocide.

He has talked to the press as well, telling about the goal and the agenda of his visit.

It’s great to be here, I’m in Yerevan at friends’ invitation and I’m going to cooperate with their company.

The U19 Euro is underway. I will go to a few games to watch some good football.

This isn’t my first visit to Armenia. I played against the Armenian team in 2007 here. I don’t know much about the country, but I like it here. Armenians are nice, hospitable and friendly people. I think our cultures have similarities.

Armenia is developing, the government is attentive to sport. Football here is progressing and you have quite a few talented young players, which is very important for the national team.

A great view of the city opens from the memorial, which seemed symbolic to me. I wanted to go there, because it’s important to respect the values of the country. You have to visit the museum and learn what happened. I paid my tribute to the memory of the victims.

I’m going to get acquainted with the city and later, in the evening, watch the Spain vs. Portugal and Armenia vs. Italy games.

A gigantic abandoned Soviet-era telescope nestled high in the Armenian mountains has been revealed in stunning detail in epic drone footage.

The massive Herouni Mirror Radio telescope is located about 1,700 meters above sea level near the town of Orgov, Armenia. Built between 1981 and 1985, it was thought to be one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world at the time.

The impressive telescope is surrounded by abandoned buildings that were used to take radio measurements and conduct research. A peek inside reveals curious relics of that bygone age, intricate panels and control desks used to operate the then-state-of-the-art site.

Outside, decaying structures serve as an austere monument to the destructive forces of time as the environment increasingly batters and erodes the site.

The Herouni Mirror Radio telescope fell into disrepair after the end of the Soviet Union, but the National Institute of Metrology of Armenia, which now owns it, is currently looking for an investor to restore it.

An Armenian Orthodox priest joined Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone June 21 to begin the 2019 celebration of Religious Freedom Week, urging those gathered at evening prayer to say “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays,” wear the crucifix openly, and say grace before meals when eating in restaurants.

The 1915 Armenian genocide by the Turkish government took the lives of 1.5 million Armenians, said the pastor of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Orthodox Church in San Francisco. “Not because we were Armenians, but because we were Christians,” Armenian Orthodox Father Barouyr Shernezian told those gathered to pray vespers at Star of the Sea Church in San Francisco.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have designated June 22-29 Religious Freedom Week. It begins with the feast day of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, includes the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and ends with the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. This year, the week also included the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) and the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Speaking on the vigil of the martyred English Catholics Saints Thomas More and John Fischer, Father Shernezian said that today the Armenian faithful are the heirs of those martyred Armenians’ children because despite great efforts by Muslim Turks to re-educate them away from their Christian faith, the orphaned children retained their faith and language after “the first genocide of the 20 th century” in 1915.

“When I use the word freedom or think about it, it naturally touches my whole identity and being, because as an ethnic Armenian, I know and I have felt how much my people suffered for their freedom and especially for the freedom of our religion,” said the 27-year-old ethnic Armenian and Lebanese immigrant. “That is why, delivering a homily about religious freedom comes from wounds and a different kind of experience.”

Father Shernezian counseled kindness and respect, advising that each person live religious freedom within themselves and be open about who they are as people of Christian faith. God gave us free will and therefore in creating us also bestowed religious freedom, Father Shernezian said.

“I remember Mother Theresa’s beautiful words: “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies”. We cannot expect from the world or from the world leaders to respect religious freedom, when we are not able to respect others’ faith, belief or their differences,” Father Shernezian said. “We cannot expect changes from the society, when the religious practices and belief are limited within the sanctuary, only in prayers and worship, but not in action and behavior, especially in multicultural and multi-religious communities.”
Father Shernezian noted, “Our Lord Jesus Christ, took His love, His Words and His teachings, to all the communities of Israel, to Sadducees, to Pharisees, to Samaritans, to Zealots and even to Gentiles. His salvation was for all flesh (Luke 6:3). Jesus did not teach us loving only those who share our faith and belief, He taught us to love everyone. Religious freedom means to be freed from our humanly sights and see the image and likeness of our neighbors and behave accordingly.”
After vespers, the group including Father Shernezian and Archbishop Cordileone continued on to Stein’s, a restaurant nearby where the Orthodox Armenians and Catholics enjoyed a social hour together. The event was the first event of Religious Freedom Week, and this was the second year that vespers for religious freedom inaugurated Religious Freedom Week in San Francisco.
