Henrikh Mkhitaryan is hot on the heels of a Philippe Coutinho record – and Man United fans are loving it
The Armenian has started the season in sensational form, making four goals in just two games

By Jake Polden

Manchester United fans have a lot to be happy about at the moment.

They've bought some brilliant players this summer – £75million forward Romelu Lukaku and £40million Nemanja Matic top this pile.

And the entire team has hit the ground running, recording two sensational 4-0 results against West Ham on the opening day of the season and Swansea the following week.

Stand out performers have been Lukaku, who just cannot stop scoring, Paul Pogba, who looks rejuvenated with Matic standing next to him, Anthony Martial, who has bagged goals and assists as a cameo player, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian is widely considered to be one of United's most creative outlets, and so far this season has demonstrated this to be 100 per cent accurate.

Against West Ham he recorded two assists, and then in the win over Swansea he recorded two more, meaning he has set up a total of four goals so far this season – three more than he managed during the entire 2016/17 campaign.

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho – the Reds' prized possession who has been the subject of some serious Barcelona interest of late – is yet to feature in the Premier League this season.

But his record amount of assists, which he managed last season, is seven, meaning after just two games, Mkhitaryan is only three behind matching it.

And well, United fans haven't shied away from boasting about the fact that there man is almost certainly going to eclipse Coutinho's record.

ANKARA: Turkish politician in Germany sentenced for social media share

Daily Sabah, Turkey

Aug 21 2017

Turkish-born politician Bekir Sipahi was sentenced to 30 days in jail by a German court for a share he made on social media.

Sipahi, a member of the Duisburg Assembly, was sued by Cem Özdemir, the co-chair of the German Green Party, after he had reacted to Özdemir last year on social media for bringing the 1915 incidents to the Bundestag's agenda last year. While Armenia and the Armenia diaspora pursue worldwide recognition of the 1915 incidents that occurred in the Ottoman Empire during World War I as genocide, Turkey always emphasizes the "suffering of both communities" during conflict and calls for an international research.

After the 14-monthy case, a court in Duisburg sentenced Sipahi to 30 days in jail.

Sipahi contended that Özdemir's intolerance of opposing ideas was exposed with this behavior. "I did not label anyone in the share, I just declared my idea. I will seek my rights in the legal way against the so-called libertarian Özdemir, and I will go to the court of human rights [ECtHR] if necessary," he said.

He explained that he participated in a protest rally in Berlin last year shortly before the allegations regarding the 1915 incidents were brought to the agenda of the Bundestag under the leadership of Özdemir.

"Özdemir was constantly attacking Turkey and President [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan in the press. I couldn't remain indifferent as a Turkish-born politician who loved his country, his nation, and I criticized Özdemir for his allegations against Turkey regarding the 1915 incidents with two tweets. Despite him slandering Turkey numerous times for restricting social media and the press, he sued me for my tweets," he said. Sipahi called his sentence a "scandal," and claimed that he has not been informed by the court regarding the ongoing legal process. "Is that Germany's justice? Where are human rights, freedom of speech? Why did they wait 14 months to make such a decision? I will not pay the bail and serve in the prison," he said.

Yerevan August 11

Alexander Avanesov. Construction sector was and remains one of the
most important branch of Armenian economy, Armenian Prime Minister
Karen Karapetyan stated during the solemn ceremony dedicated to the
Construction Day on August 11.

According to the Prime Minister, the activation of the construction
sector brings a multiplier effect to the economy. "If the construction
is actively developing, other spheres are developing, for any state
the development of the urban development sector has a multiplier
effect, having a positive impact on the development of other areas of
the country's economy." The state in which the construction sector
develops is going through a period of progress. Our ancestors left us
an exceptional heritage, which we are proud of, presenting it to the
world and generations. It is remarkable that the Armenian builders
today are developing the experience they have received from great
masters and tradition ii, building strong and beautiful building with
a modern-day application of innovative solutions and technologies ",
said Karen Karapetyan.

According to the Prime Minister, despite the statistics that the
construction sector is experiencing hard times in Armenia, one thins
is obvious: Armenian builder has always built and will build. It so
happened that the decline in the construction sector fell on a very
difficult period for the country. Karen Karapetyan stressed that at
the present time the government is making efforts to implement
investment programs in the construction sector in order to activate
urban development. "There are already numerous projects in the capital
and in the regions, and in this context, the statistics we are
currently distributing are very interesting and encouraging, and we
are ready to create additional conditions for the development of the
economy and for attracting investments, I would like to record, That
the tendencies of activation are observed in the construction sector
and we are confident that we will make progress in speeding up the
growth of the sphere, "the Armenian government head said. He added
that for the first six months of this year, according to statistics,
there is a decline in two areas - construction and agriculture.
"According to our forecasts, by October this year in the construction
sector there will be such indicators that will supplement the pace of
the last year, and by the end of 2017 there will be growth," Karen
Karapetyan said, adding that last month there were tendencies to
growth. "We are sure that we are on the right track," head of Armenian
Government said.

100 years ago in The Record: Aug. 5

Troy Record, NY

Aug 9 2017

The Turkish-ruled Ottoman Empire is responsible for more than 1,000,000 deaths of men, women and children since the outbreak of the great European war, a missionary formerly based in Turkey tells a Troy audience today.

Rev. Charles T. Riggs was a Princeton classmate of Second Presbyterian Church pastor Rev. Paul R. Hickok. Until recently he was an instructor at Robert College, an American-run private school in Constantinople, the Turkish capital, where Riggs was born to a missionary family. He speaks at Second Presbyterian today on current conditions in Turkey.

The U.S. is not at war with Turkey despite declaring war on the Ottomans’ German allies last April. Turkey has cut off diplomatic relations with the U.S., however, and most Americans have left the empire since then.

According to Riggs, “several American women nurses are working singly in hospitals many miles apart, amid disease of every description. One of them is so devoted to her work that it was said it would require force to remove her from the hospital.”

Turkish atrocities against the empire’s Armenia population have received considerable publicity in the last two years. Riggs recounts at least one atrocity, or the aftermath of one.

“His description of the Turks placing the little Armenian children in small boats, of their being taken out to sea, the return of the small boats, and a few days later the bodies of the children being washed ashore was very pathetic,” The Record reports.

Riggs reminds the congregation that the Turks have also committed atrocities against Syrians, Greeks and their own people. The Ottoman regime has only made matters worse by refusing to let Americans continue their extensive charitable work inside the empire, the educator claims.

“The present rulers gained their position by intrigue and murder,” Riggs says, “and would stop at nothing to hold power in their hands….Indeed, the rulers of Turkey were just as heartless to their own fellow countrymen if a voice was raised against the government as they had been to other nationalities.”

The word “genocide” doesn’t exist in 1917, but Riggs accuses the Ottoman rulers of “a desire to take the present opportunity of destroying these peoples” in Armenia and Syria.

Turkey will change for the better once the U.S. and its allies win the war, Riggs predicts. He expects the Armenians and Syrians to “begin life anew after years of persecution” and claims that “Many Mohammedans [i.e. Muslims] will embrace Christianity.”

Increased Bible sales just before the war and general mockery of an Ottoman declaration of holy war lead Riggs to believe that Islam’s influence in Turkey is declining.

Armenian analyst expects U.S. to step up its role in Karabakh peace efforts

ARKA, Armenia

Aug 8 2017

YEREVAN, August 8. /ARKA/. Ruben Safrastyan, the director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, an affiliation of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, predicted today that the United States is very likely to step up its role in the international efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Speaking at a news conference Safrastyan said it is in the interest of the US to be more active in the Karabakh negotiation process and to strengthen its position in the region, however, he added that no breakthrough should be expected very soon because all the parties understand how complicated this conflict is.

Safrastyan argued that Azerbaijan's refusal to participate in NATO exercises in Georgia may be related to the processes around Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The refusal was a gesture meant for Russia. This way Azerbaijan is trying to probe and strengthen its position," he said.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted into armed clashes after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s as the predominantly Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan sought to secede from Azerbaijan and declared its independence backed by a successful referendum.  On May 12, 1994, the Bishkek cease-fire agreement put an end to the military operations.

A truce was brokered by Russia in 1994, although no permanent peace agreement has been signed. Since then, Nagorno-Karabakh and several adjacent regions have been under the control of Armenian forces of Karabakh.  Nagorno-Karabakh is the longest-running post-Soviet era conflict and has continued to simmer despite the relative peace of the past two decades, with snipers causing tens of deaths a year.

On April 2, 2016, Azerbaijan launched military assaults along the entire perimeter of its contact line with Nagorno-Karabakh. Four days later a cease-fire was reached. —0—

Challenges continue in Mosul: “The situation is difficult and the needs are great.”

Challenges continue in Mosul: “The situation is difficult and the needs are great.”

Hovig Etyemezian has been serving as head of UNHCR’s Sub-Office in Mosul since last November. A native of Lebanon, he previously served in a number of field assignments including Jordan where he managed Zaatari camp, as well as Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Mauritania and DR Congo.

Almost one million people from Mosul have been displaced since October 2016. As of July 27, some 244,978 people have returned to East and West Mosul (including 94 percent of those who had fled the eastern part of the city). An estimated 21,000 people have returned since the government declared an end to the battle for Mosul on July 9. Hovig describes what this new situation means for UNHCR operations.

With large scale returns taking place and people returning to their homes, what is the mood of people on the street?

"People are eager to return to their homes, and life is slowly resuming in both East and West Mosul. Iraqis do not like living in camps. Many long to return to rebuild their homes, start businesses, reunite with their families, and return to some sort of normalcy. Many Iraqis, however, have lost their homes and belongings.

The situation in West Mosul is still unsafe – entire neighbourhoods have been totally destroyed. It will take time to clear areas from mines and unexploded ordnance, to repair infrastructure, and for public institutions such as the judiciary, schools and health centres to become fully operational."

How has your staff been personally affected by the recent changes in terms of movement, work and families?

"The countless days spent in the field take their toll on staff and their nuclear families. Over the past months our team and partners have built camps for internally displaced, registered new arrivals and hosted them in our camps, ensured life-saving assistance is delivered upon arrival, worked closely with beneficiaries, authorities and partners, to ensure displaced people are sheltered protected and assisted in the camps. We have also assisted over 400,000 internally displaced Iraqis who have passed through our transit centres on their way to the camps. We have also assisted internally displaced and returnees in urban areas."

With the changed security landscape in Mosul, what is UNHCR doing to assist displaced persons who want to return home? What kinds of assistance are returnees receiving?

"Assessments in the return areas are ongoing, we are looking at structural damage, vulnerabilities of the population as well as legal and protection needs. We have started supporting the reunification of families and working with partners to deliver in-kind and cash assistance. We are distributing emergency shelter sealing-off kits that can help families do basic repairs to their homes. The situation is difficult and the needs are great. UNHCR aims to deliver 36,000 emergency shelter kits by end of the year and cash assistance to 3,000 families by September 2017."

What are the biggest challenges and most urgent needs to UNHCR’s operations in Mosul?

"Most of the thirteen camps that UNHCR built to respond to the Mosul emergency are full. Expansion of Al Salamiyah camp is underway. We expect that thousands of people will be displaced as a result of military operations in Tal Afar and Hawiga. Given the scale of destruction in West Mosul, and the need to clear areas contaminated by explosive devices, we anticipate that displaced families will continue to shelter in camps.

UNHCR is under-funded for its work to meet the critical needs of families displaced from Mosul and surrounding areas, as well as those who are beginning to return to safe areas. UNHCR urgently needs $126 million this year.

The most urgent needs include reunification of separated families, civil documentation, psycho-social support to families, services to vulnerable people, and livelihoods support. Given the level of destruction in West Mosul, shelter assistance is crucial, otherwise many Iraqis will find it very difficult to return. "

What recent experience with displaced persons and returnees in Mosul has been particularly moving?

"The resilience of Iraqis in the face of such traumatic experiences is humbling. The woman portrayed in the photo (below) is sheltering in the UNHCR camp in Hammam Al Alil south of Mosul. ISIL destroyed her home and robbed her family of all their belongings. Despite all her suffering, she still manages to be optimistic about the future and wants to return and rebuild her home."
