Grammy spreads the love among classical nominees, and sets the stage for a sympathy vote

Analysis
Richard S. Ginell

Who can fathom the inscrutable ways of
Grammy when it comes to classical nominations? If there is any pattern
in this bunch of nods, it may be the predominance of American composers
and organizations in some categories.

The orchestral performance
nominations are monopolized by Americans, with Michael Tilson Thomas and
the San Francisco Symphony being the only entry from the West for their
alluring Debussy Super Audio CD. The Osmo Vänskä/Minnesota Orchestra
performance of Mahler Symphony No. 5 is rather dull, though its disc has
been praised for its sonics. Also nominated are Manfred Honeck and the
Pittsburgh Symphony for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, Leonard Slatkin
and the Detroit Symphony for Copland’s Symphony No. 3 and “Three Latin
American Sketches,” and a collection of three concertos for orchestra
commissioned by the Cincinnati Symphony led by Louis Langrée.

GRAMMY NOMINATIONS 2018: Live updates »

Each
of the nominees for contemporary composition — Adam Schoenberg
(“Picture Studies”), Tigran Mansurian (Requiem), Richard Danielpour
(“Songs of Solitude”), Zhou Tian (Concerto for Orchestra) and Jennifer
Higdon (Viola Concerto) — received an additional nomination in another
category for the same recording. Schoenberg and Danielpour picked up
theirs in the category of engineered album, Mansurian for choral
performance, Zhou as part of the Cincinnati’s Symphony’s orchestral
performance nomination, and Higdon in the ever-mysterious classical
compendium category.

Alban Berg figures in the opera sweepstakes
with two nominations: “Lulu” in a fascinating William Kentridge
production at the Metropolitan Opera with Marlis Petersen in the title
role on DVD, and “Wozzeck” in a good concert performance with Roman
Trekel singing the title role and Hans Graf leading the Houston Symphony
on CD. The other nominees are another DVD from the Met, Bizet’s “The
Pearl Fishers”; Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel” with Valery
Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus on DVD; and Handel’s
“Ottone” with George Petrou leading Il Pomo d’Oro on CD.

The next
two Ojai Music Festival music directors — violinist Patricia
Kopatchinskaja (2018) and singer-conductor Barbara Hannigan (2019) —
received nominations. Kopatchinskaja’s came in the chamber music/small
ensemble performance category for her string orchestra arrangements of
Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet and other pieces with the
Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Hannigan was nominated for classical solo
vocal for “Crazy Girl Crazy” (a title perhaps inspired by Bill Haley’s
rockabilly record “Crazy Man Crazy”), which contains Berio’s Sequenza
III, Berg’s “Lulu” Suite and a suite from, yes, Gershwin’s “Girl Crazy.”

But
in that solo vocal category, Grammy’s proclivity for sympathy will
favor the charismatic Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, who died of
brain cancer this month at age 55. He is nominated for his recording of
songs by Georgy Sviridov (“Russia Cast Adrift”) with Constantine
Orbelian and the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra.

Perhaps
the most surprising clutch of nominations went to a CD of two solemn,
sonorous Masses by Marcel Tyberg, a virtually unknown Viennese composer
who died in the Holocaust in 1944 and whose music has been revived only
in the last decade. This release racked up three nominations (choral,
engineered, surround sound) for Sioux Falls’ South Dakota Chorale.

Lavrov Passes on Putin's Greetings to Azerbaijani President During Visit to Baku

BAKU, November 19 (Sputnik) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
passed on Russian President Vladimir Putin's greetings to Azerbaijani
leader Ilham Aliyev during an official visit to Azerbaijan's capital
city of Baku.

"You [the Azerbaijani president] have recently met with the Russian
president in Tehran on November 1. He sends you his warmest
greetings," Lavrov said during a meeting with Aliyev in the
Azerbaijani leader's residence.

Lavrov stressed that Moscow remained committed to the implementation
of all agreements it reached with Baku and noted that Russia, as a
co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, was interested in seeking a
resolution to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In early November, Putin and Aliyev participated in trilateral talks
in Tehran together with their Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani,
during which they emphasized the need to resolve unsettled conflicts
in the region as soon as possible.

GLENDALE—The application for the 2018 Armenian Youth Federation Youth Corps summer program is now available. AYF Youth Corps is a six-week program in Armenia, of which five weeks are dedicated to hosting summer camps for youth ages 9-16, and one week is scheduled for exploring the treasures of Armenia.

“Living in Armenia allows you to witness the everyday lives of the locals. Not only do you witness it, but you become a part of it. We spent hours outside playing sports or hanging out with locals rather than glued to our phones.” emphasized Knar Baghdassarian, a 2017 youth Corps participant. “Armenia’s living environment is very different from what we’re used to in America and living there definitely made me realized how much I take things for granted,”

Youth Corps participants get the opportunity to go on excursions to Armenian landmarks including Dzidzernakapert, Temple of Garni, Geghard Monastery, and more. The program participants run camps in various regions of Artsakh and get a chance to visit the Armenian community in Javakhk, Georgia during their time volunteering.

During the summer camps, Youth Corps participants lead children in competitions, sports, Armenian history lessons, arts and crafts, singing, and other aspects of Armenian culture. Participants are immersed in the city in which they host the camp for children that week.

The AYF Youth Corps provides a unique and hands-on opportunity for Armenian youth to connect with their Homeland, impacting both those who join as Youth Corps participants and the local communities that welcome AYF Youth Corps.

“Youth Corps is so unique in that you build bridges, memorable connections with the young kids who wait all year long to meet you as your campers at jampar; you reconnect to your roots, ignited by the day to day experience from waking up early by the cheerfully inpatient campers, ready for jampar, walking with you to and from the campsite, excited to show you their home,” said Alique Cherchian, a Youth Corps 2016 participant. “However, above all else, the humbleness of the beautiful kids and the community locals makes you realize truly how much of an impact you are making on them, their village community, and our Hayastan as a whole, simply by participating in the program.”

The deadline to submit an application is March 1, 2018. Apply today!

Founded in 1933 with organizational structures in over 17 regions around the world and a legacy of over eighty years of community involvement, the Armenian Youth Federation is the largest and most influential Armenian-American youth organization in the world, working to advance the social, political, educational, and cultural awareness of Armenian youth.

The President of the National Assembly met with the Polish Marshal of the Seim

The President of the National Assembly met with the Polish Marshal of the Seim

Yerevan October 21

Ani Mshetsyan. Ara Babloyan, the Chairman of the National Assembly of
Armenia, met with the Marshal of the Seym of Poland Marek Kuchcinski
on October 20 in Warsaw.

According to the press service of the Armenian Parliament, Babloyan
noted that over the past 25 years, the countries have developed
friendly relations, political dialogue and effective cooperation in
various fields.

Ara Babloyan stressed that cooperation in the parliamentary format
plays an important role in enriching the Armenian-Polish interstate
cooperation and deepening the existing friendly ties. According to the
head of the Armenian parliament, the activation of ties between the
friendship groups in the parliaments can play an important role in the
development of the Armenian-Polish inter-parliamentary dialogue.
According to Babloyan, there is a great potential for development of
cooperation between the parliamentarians of Armenia and Poland, not
only in bilateral but also in multilateral format.

Touching upon the Karabakh issue, Babloyan noted that Armenia sees no
alternative to a peaceful settlement of the problem. Touching upon the
war unleashed by Azerbaijan in April last year, the head of the
Armenian parliament stressed that the atrocities committed by the
Azerbaijani side once again demonstrated the attitude of the
Azerbaijani leadership towards human life. The RA Parliament Speaker
noted that it is not clear how many more young people will die due to
the fault of the Azerbaijani side and its unwillingness to solve the
problem peacefully.

Marek Kuchcinski said that cooperation in the parliamentary format
will continue. He noted that Armenians are friends of the Poles, the
best proof of which is the historic resolution adopted yesterday in
the Senate, timed to coincide with the 650th anniversary of the
creation of the Armenian community of Poland. The sides also discussed
specific programs for the development of bilateral and multilateral
cooperation.

Azerbaijani press: No other way to settle Karabakh conflict besides Madrid Principles – MP

17:56 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct. 20

By Elchin Mehdiyev – Trend:

A briefing on “Averting All-Out War in Nagorno-Karabakh: The Role of the US and OSCE”, which took place Oct. 18 in the Russell Senate Office Building of the US, was more aimed at promoting Armenia and getting even more help for it from the US, Azerbaijani MP Aydin Mirzazade told Trend Oct. 20.

“Nevertheless, Ambassador James Warlick, former OSCE Minsk Group co-chair from the US, and others made statements that were close to objectivity, and their essence is that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should be settled within the framework of international law and the problem should be gradually solved,” Mirzazade said.

He noted that the phased plan includes withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the adjacent Azerbaijani districts of Nagorno-Karabakh, opening of the Lachin corridor, granting temporary status to Nagorno-Karabakh.

“These principles were offered and discussed many times,” the MP said. “The fact that they were repeated at a briefing in the US once again shows that there is no other way to solve this problem except these principles.”

On Oct. 19, James Warlick addressed a briefing on “Averting All-Out War in Nagorno-Karabakh: The Role of the US and OSCE”, organized by the US Congress Helsinki Commission. He noted that six elements, based on the Madrid Principles, should be an integral part of the peace agreement and be accepted as one package.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
