SITUATION IN NORTH CAUCASUS RESULT OF PAN-TURKISM, EXPERT SAYS

The current explosive situation in the North Caucasus is, to a
great extent, the result of Pan-Turkism, Vladimir Zhakharov PhD,
Coordinator of the Center for Caucasian Studies, Moscow State
Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-University), stated during
a Yerevan-Moscow space bridge on the occasion of the 95th anniversary
of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey.

According to him, Pan-Turkism remains a real threat even now. "Nothing
‘more real’ could exist, and it is spearheaded against Russia,"
the expert said.

Speaking of the Armenian Genocide, Zhakharov stressed that not only
the tragic events in Turkey in 1915, but also the Armenian massacres in
Shushi in 1918 and in Baku in 1920, as well as the events that occurred
in Azerbaijan 20 years ago, can be termed as genocide. The expert,
however, did not dwell on the events in Azerbaijan – he reported
that the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Russia showered MGIMO with letters
of protest at his statements. "We received the last note from the
Embassy of Azerbaijan this Monday," he said.

As regards the reasons for Turkey’s unwillingness to admit the
Armenian Genocide, the expert said that in private talks Azerbaijani
politicians expressed their fears. "Ankara is afraid of the financial
and territorial responsibility should it admit the Armenian Genocide,"
Zakharov said.

Commenting on Russia’s assistance to the Armenians that survived the
Genocide, the expert pointed out that Russia helped the Armenians that
survived and settled down there, but "it might have done more." Russia
must not forget the sacred and tragic date, the expert said. He
also proposed the organization of an international conference on the
Armenian Genocide and the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.

Armenian Political Coalition Makes Joint Statement On Armenia-Turkey

Armenian Political Coalition Makes Joint Statement On Armenia-Turkey Protocols

The political boards of the parties represented in the political
coalition of the National Assembly – Armenian Republican Party,
Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats Yerkir – came forth with a joint
statement today, which runs as follows:

"Over the past two years the President of the Republic of Armenia,
supported by the political majority of the National Assembly, has
taken consistent steps towards establishment and development of
Armenian-Turkish relations without preconditions. The United States,
the Russian Federation, France and Switzerland have greatly backed
the process. Many countries worldwide have positively assessed
the initiative, emphasizing its exceptional importance for the
establishment of stability in the region and solution of the existing
conflicts through civilized dialogue.

The constructive efforts of the Armenian side and the expectations
of the international community faced Turkey’s inconsistent policy of
evasion and preconditions, which brought the process of ratification
of the Armenian-Turkish protocols, signed in Zurich, October 10,
2009, within a reasonable timeframe into a deadlock.

The political majority of the National Assembly considers unacceptable
the statements of the Turkish side, namely Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan, trying to link the ratification of the protocols by Turkey
to the settlement of the Karabakh issue.

At the same time, taking into consideration the refusal of the Turkish
side from its commitment to ratify the protocols without preconditions
and within a reasonable timeframe makes the continuation of the process
over their ratification in the Armenian National Assembly pointless at
this stage, the coalition considers it proper to suspend the process
and withdraw the issue from the agenda of the four-day sittings
until the Turkish side is ready to continue the process without
preconditions," information department of the Armenian National
Assembly reported.

TEHRAN, APRIL 20, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. Official Ankara is
prepared to negotiate with Western states with the aim of overcoming
the contradictions over Iran’s nuclear program. Turkish Foreign
Minister Ahmet Davutoglu declared that during his official visit
to Tehran.

In his words, the matter concerns first of all the prospect of sending
Iran’s uranium abroad for enrichment.

"If our Iranian friends have such a desire and if they consider our
role in this problem as expedient, we will not refuse," Davutoglu said,
adding: "As a third country, Turkey is prepared to act a mediator
in negotiations over the future fate of uranium reserves and other
problems relating to the nuclear program of Iran".

The glitter of Gauhar Jaan’s nose pin, her teasing smile as she
sang Raseeli tori akhiyan sawaria, her sensual adaa — these created
havoc in the hearts and minds of music connoisseurs who visited this
high-profile tawaif in the early 20th century Calcutta. Little is
known about Jaan’s life– how a girl born as Eileen Angelina Yeoward
to an Armenian Jew couple in Azamgarh became one of the highest paid
courtesans of the Varanasi kothas and Chitpur baris in Calcutta, and
then finally turned into a celebrity as the first woman to record
for the Gramophone Company of India. My Name is Gauhar Jaan! –The
Life and Times of a Musician (Rupa & Co, Rs 595) is an attempt to
plug these gaps as Bangalore-based author Vikram Sampath, 30, traces
Jaan’s tumultuous life as a singer and performer. Sampath recently
released the book in Delhi.

US RECOGNIZED THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE … IN 1975

The US recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1975: the Congress has
already passed a resolution the Armenian lobby organizations of America
are trying to promote now, the deputy director of the Armenian Genocide
Museum-Institute Suren Manukyan told reporters today.

"I cannot quite understand the process underway currently as the
Congress has already approved the resolution. Nothing changed then
since there was no Republic of Armenia to make demands. Now the
republic exists and it may refer to the resolution endorsed in 1975
when submitting a petition," he said.

New video reveals Islamic activists carried notes: ‘They were attacking
our religion’

A new video about the martyrdom of three Christian workers at the hands
of Islamic activists in Turkey reveals that while the government’s
case against the alleged killers continues in turmoil and confusion,
the Christian community in the Muslim nation views the tragedy as
the will of God.

"Malayta," available now as the April 18 third anniversary of the
deaths approaches, is from Austin Stone Community Church, Voice of
the Martyrs and Family Christian Movies. It tells the story of the
martyrdom of Necati Aydin, Tilman Geske and Ugur Yuksel. The three,
who were working at a Christian publishing house, had agreed to meet
with several young Muslim men who expressed interest in the Bible.

Authorities have reported the Muslims first demanded that one of the
Christians convert to Islam. When he refused, they pulled knives and
tied up, tortured and stabbed the Christians for several hours before
their throats were slit.

WND has reported on the case since the widow of one of the slain
Christians created a tidal wave of reaction in Turkey by expressing
forgiveness for the attackers.

When the publishing house attack became known, the response of Geske’s
widow, Susanne, hit the front pages of the nation’s largest newspapers.

(Story continues below)

"Oh God, forgive them for they know not what they do," she said,
echoing the words of Christ on the cross in Luke 23.34. The video
recounts that after the attack on the three men, she was contacted
by news media in Turkey for an interview.

She explains on the video she had no idea what to say until someone
told her it would be an opportunity for a Christian testimony.

She agreed, and her subsequent statements were reported in detail
across front pages of newspapers nationwide.

Watch the story of the three men who are being described as the first
martyrs of the millenium in the Islamic nation of Turkey!

Word of her testimony and its impact first had arrived via a letter
that was distributed by the Voice of the Martyrs, which works with
members of the persecuted Christian church worldwide.

The letter, titled "A Letter to the Global Church from The Protestant
Church of Smyrna," said, "In a country where blood-for-blood revenge is
as normal as breathing, many many reports have come to the attention of
the church of how this comment of Susanne [Geske] has changed lives."

One columnist wrote of her comment, "She said in one sentence what
1,000 missionaries in 1,000 years could never do."

VOM noted that 2,000 years ago, Smyrna was addressed in Revelation
2:8-11: "And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write… ‘Do not fear
any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil
is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested,
and you will have tribulation 10 days. Be faithful until death, and
I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear
what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be
hurt by the second death.’"

Five individuals have been named as suspects in the attack at the
offices of the Zirve Publishing Co. in Malatya April 18, 2007. Four
were arrested holding knives inside the room where the Christians
were killed and a fifth was arrested outside the building where
he apparently had jumped from a window. They all carried notes,
"We did this for our country. They were attacking our religion."

All five have made made a multitude of court appearances. The
prosecution, according to VOM, seems caught up in legal limbo because
the suspects have been linked to an organization that also is accused
of trying to overthrow the government.

The video places some of the blame for the attack on government
and national media in Turkey, since the government previously had
cited Christian missionaries as one of the major "terror" threats to
the nation.

The media picked up on the government designation and, although the
nation’s constitution technically establishes freedom of religion,
portrayed missionaries as powers trying to upset the government.

Turkey, according to a warning from famed PLO
terrorist-turned-Christian Walid Shoebat, poses one of the biggest
Islamic threats to the world today.

Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin reported Turkey apparently is trying to
revive the old Islamic Ottoman Empire that ruled that region of the
world for five centuries prior to World War I.

The report said Turkey’s increasing lack of interest in the European
Union combined with its efforts to re-establish its influence in
Turkic countries of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan
and Uzbekistan and its outreaches to Russia, Syria and Iran were
cause for concern.

At the time, the shift by Tayyip Recep Erdogan, Turkey’s leader, from
West to East was obvious, because Turkey announced it was cutting
Israel out of annual military exercises involving NATO forces while
it sought out military exercises with Syria.

Shoebat, the grandson of the Muslim Mukhtar of Beit Sahour-Bethlehem
and a friend of Haj-Ameen Al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem
and notorious friend of Adolf Hitler, said the actions and attitude
of Turkey clearly are causing concern.

A Christian pastor from Ismir who appeared on the video said he was
being questioned about the deaths in a room where a police poster
listed all of the evangelical churches among recognized "terrorist"
organizations.

The Turkish media also repeatedly has spread stories about Christians
giving Muslims thousands of dollars to convert and accused them
of being involved in human trafficking, neither of which is true,
Turkish Christians said.

Another witness to the case reported that of 31 files compiled by
prosecutors in the deaths of the three Christians, 16 dealt with the
Christians, not the suspects.

According to the Voice of the Martyrs, it was only months after the
attack that Turkey "took a step back toward a religiously controlled
state" when in August 2007 a leader who used to promote political
Islam was installed in power.

"Despite government claims and a constitutional guarantee of religious
freedom, Christians do not enjoy freedom of religion in many areas.

Politicians, police and the growing Islamist movement are hostile
to anything Christian. … The media portrays Christians as foreign
government agents and spreads rumors that Christians bribe young
people with money and sex. The public tends to believe these false
accusations," the organization’s profile of Turkey reveals.

Yet family members of the victims testified on the video that they
believe God allowed the attack to happen for a purpose that is higher
than they can understand.

According to Compass Direct, authorities in Turkey have been trying
this year to wrap up the case of the deadly attack on the three
Christians.

Prosecutors have demanded three life sentences without parole for
each defendant.

Christian author Max Lucado called "Malatya" "the story of the first
martyrs of the modern Turkish church."

Identified as suspects in the case are Emre Gunaydin, Salih Guumler,
Cuma Ozdemir, Hamit Ceker and Abuzer Yildirim.

Christians, who make up less than 1 percent of the population in
Turkey, have been subjected to numerous attacks in recent years. In
2006, a Turkish teen shot to death a Roman Catholic priest as he
prayed in his church. Two other priests were attacked the same year.

Early in 2007 came the death of Armenian Christian editor Hrant Dink.

CANOGA PARK, Calif., April 13 — Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif. (27th CD),
issued the following news release:

Today, Congressman Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) addressed over
100 high school students inside the auditorium at Armenian General
Benevolent Union (AGBU) Manoogian Demirdjian School, in Canoga Park.

Sherman has routinely hosted town hall meetings for high school
students during his time in Congress.

Sherman spoke about federal issues, military academies and internship
opportunities in the Congressman’s Sherman Oaks and Washington,
DC offices. Sherman also responded to questions on a wide range of
issues including the Armenian genocide, U.S. and Turkish foreign
policy, health care and college loans.

"Having Congressman Sherman speak at our school is a huge benefit
for our students because they were able to discuss their issues with
an influential policy maker," said Hagop Hagopian, Principal, AGBU
Manoogian Demirdjian School. "This meeting provided our students
a unique opportunity to learn how the government operates and how
legislation is passed. Having Congressman Sherman answering their
questions is a once in a lifetime experience."

Sherman highlighted his work on the House Foreign Affairs Committee
to recognize the Armenian Genocide. In March, in a 23 to 22 vote,
Sherman joined the Committee to pass House Resolution 252, which
officially recognizes the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923. Congressman
Sherman is an original cosponsor of the legislation. Since coming to
Congress in 1997, Sherman has co-sponsored every resolution dealing
with the issue of the Armenian Genocide.

"Meetings like this are critical to the public policy process. They
provide an opportunity for me to hear about the most pressing concerns
of the Armenian community and to elaborate on the work for Armenians
and students that my colleagues and I are tackling in Congress," said
Congressman Brad Sherman. "These students are the future leaders of
the Armenian community. They contributed to substantive conversations
on a variety of issues that are important to the community and the
lives of students alike. I thank the students for their participation
in the meeting."

Congressman Sherman directed the students to contact his Sherman
Oaks office at (818) 501-9200 for further assistance with federal
agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education. He encouraged
constituents to visit his website () for
more helpful information.

REPORTS FROM YEREVAN STATE UNIVERSITY ADD NEW DATA TO RESEARCH IN MITOMYCIN THERAPY

Biotech Week
April 14, 2010

Research findings, ‘Proline-rich polypeptide-1 protects the cells
in vitro from genotoxic effects of mitomycin C,’ are discussed in
a new report. According to recent research from Yerevan, Armenia,
"A new proline-rich polypeptide (PRP-1) has been earlier shown to
possess a broad spectrum of biological activities and seems to be a
potential medicine. The potential genotoxic properties of PRP-1 and
protective effect of PRP-1 against genotoxic action of Mitomycin C
(MMC) were analyzed in details in the present work."

"DNA and chromosome damages were studied in KCL-22 cell line of human
myeloid leukemia by the Comet assay and micronucleus induction test,
respectively. The results suggest that DNA damages are, at least
partly, transient and reparable. PRP-1 at the doses 0.5-2.0 microg/ml
does not possess genotoxic activity. Moreover, this peptide expresses
both preventive and therapeutic effects against MMC-induced DNA
damage. Pre-treatment of cells with PRP-1 also prevents the appearance
of daughter cells bearing as heavy MMC-induced DNA/chromosome damages
as MNs. Thus, the polypeptide studied is able to protect the cells
from genotoxic action of MMC. This defense includes not only DNA but
also heritable chromosome damage in post-mitotic cells," wrote R.M.

Aroutiounian and colleagues, Yerevan State University (see also
Mitomycin Therapy).

The researchers concluded: "Possible mechanisms of PRP-1 protective
action are discussed."

Aroutiounian and colleagues published their study in Neurochemical

AZERBAIJANI OFFICIAL: COUNTRY SEEKS ALTERNATIVE RESOLUTIONS TO NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT

Trend News Agency
April 16 2010
Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is seeking alternative resolutions to the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Socio-Political
Department head Ali Hasanov said.

"Azerbaijan is taking adequate steps in search of an effective solution
to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Currently, anti-American propaganda
is primarily directed against the Congress and the U.S. authorities,
supporting Armenian’s aggressive policy," he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the United
States – are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the
occupied territories.

Hasanov said Azerbaijan has supported the United States in its
peacekeeping mission. The country nearly spoiled its relations with
Muslim countries and took U.S. interests in energy issues into account.

"We have repeatedly told the United States that they are one of
three countries addressing the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict. We called on Armenia to be attentive to the issue to overcome
the tough situation. In recent times, the Azerbaijani public, media
and MPs have been frustrated in this sense," Hasanov said.
