Armenia PM live on Facebook, answering reporter’s question about Karabakh’s Shushi

News.am, Armenia
Jan 30 2021

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is talking about Shushi, Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), live on Facebook.

At Yerablur Military Pantheon in Yerevan on Thursday, a reporter asked Pashinyan whether or not Shushi was an Armenian city, and in response, Pashinyan advised this reporter to submit the question in writing and he would answer.

On Friday, this reporter went to the government building with this question written on a banner, but a woman from Pashinyan's supporters tore this banner.

On January 20, Pashinyan had raised a rhetorical question in the National Assembly as to whether Shushi was Armenian, as before the Artsakh conflict had began, more than 90 percent of Shushi’s population was Azerbaijanis. But he did not mention that before the sovietization of Azerbaijan, the Armenian population in Shushi was annihilated.

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. Armenia doesn’t find that the results of Azerbaijan’s aggression and the use of force against Artsakh could create grounds for lasting peace or be considered as an opportunity for regional cooperation, Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian told his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif during a meeting in Yerevan.

“Now our region is facing new, most serious challenges which were created as a result of Azerbaijan’s dangerous attempt to solve the Karabakh conflict through force. Armenia doesn’t find that the results of Azerbaijan’s aggression and the use of force against Artsakh could create grounds for lasting peace or be considered as an opportunity for regional cooperation. Iran is an important country in the region, and we respect Iran’s approaches through which it builds its relations with its direct neighbors. Nevertheless, we’d like to once again emphasize that it is only the lasting peace addressing everyone’s interests – where there are no winners or losers, so-called victories or defeats – that could create true guarantees for advancing security, stability and development in the region,” Aivazian said.

Hrant Dink memorial to take place online

AHVAL News
Jan 14 2021

Commemorations for murdered journalist Hrant Dink will take place online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers said on Thursday.

Dink served as editor-in-chief of Istanbul’s Armenian-language newspaper Agos before being gunned down outside its offices on Jan 19. 2007.

More than 100,000 people joined the funeral for the journalist and Human Rights advocate, who sought to mend relations between Turkey and the Armenian community.

Traditionally, friends and supporters gather outside the Agos offices to mark the anniversary of the killing. This year, however, the memorial will take place online, with speeches and features on Dink’s life broadcasted throughout the day.

Ogün Samast, a Turkish ultra-nationalist, was convicted of Dink’s murder in 2011, but questions remain over the alleged involvement of state security forces.

On Tuesday, a former gendarmerie intelligence officer was detained in relation to the case, state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Turkish press: Turkish, Azerbaijani ministers discuss post-war developments

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu (L) meets Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan ( Cem Özdel – Anadolu Agency )

ANKARA

Turkey’s foreign minister held a one-on-one meeting late Wednesday with his Azerbaijani counterpart in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

Mevlut Cavusoglu and Jeyhun Bayramov met after a dinner hosted by Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi in honor of his Turkish and Azerbaijani counterparts.

Cavusoglu said on Twitter that the two discussed the latest developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in Azerbaijan.

Posting with the “TekMilletIkıDevlet” [One Nation Two States] tag, Cavusoglu said Turkey will “continue to support our Azerbaijani brothers and sisters in building peace.”

Karabakh dispute

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognized as an Azerbaijani territory, and seven adjacent regions.

When new clashes erupted on Sept. 27, 2020, the Armenian army launched attacks on civilians and Azerbaijani forces and even violated humanitarian cease-fire agreements.

During the 44-day conflict, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages, while at least 2,802 of its soldiers were martyred. There are differing claims about the number of casualties on the Armenian side, which sources and officials say could be up to 5,000.

The two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement on Nov. 10 to end the fighting and work toward a comprehensive resolution.

A joint Turkish-Russian center is being established to monitor the truce. Russian peacekeeping troops have also been deployed in the region.

The cease-fire is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and a defeat for Armenia, whose armed forces have withdrawn in line with the agreement. Violations, however, have been reported in the past few weeks, with some Armenian soldiers said to have been hiding in the mountainous enclave.

Tigran Abrahamyan: Authorities do not realize the war resumption does not depend only on us

Panorama, Armenia
Jan 16 2021

The head of 'Henaket' analytical center Tigran Abrahamyan reacted to the comments by Deputy Speaker of Parliament, member of the ruling 'My Step' faction Lena Nazaryan, who had slammed expert opinions, suggesting to re-arm and prepare for the future victory. Nazaryan had named such approach as 'reactionary and dangerous.'

"These people have not realized that Turkey and Azerbaijan are not satisfied with what they have already achieved and they have openly stated about the future directions right after the war," Abrahamyan wrote on Facebook in response to Nazaryan's comment.

"These people do not understand that the war resumption does not depend only on us. They have not understood what the army is and what role servicemen, contract soldiers and officers have in it. These people have not only suffered a defeat but continue going through the path of defeats as they do not even dare to think about the victory or dream about it. What matters to them is not the motherland, the soil and water but their posts and well-being," Abrahamyan wrote.

In the expert's words, authorities destroy everything for saving their own skin, including the national dignity and the state institutions, the values, the spirit of the fighters, without even understanding that we are all on the same boat and all, will feel the consequences of the future blows.
