Armenia 1st President doesn’t rule out formation of coalition with Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan after elections

News.am, Armenia

During today’s press conference, first President of Armenia, candidate of the Armenian National Congress political party for Prime Minister Levon Ter-Petrosyan said he doesn’t rule out the formation of a coalition with Armenia’s second and third Presidents Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan after the elections.

Ter-Petrosyan recalled that he had previously made a proposal to join forces and that it was rejected, and he added that it is no longer possible. “If I, Kocharyan, Pashinyan and the other political forces enter parliament and nobody has the majority, that will be a different story. I have always supported solidarity and coalitions. However, this can cause new problems since coalitions can change once every six months. As a result, Armenia might become a country where governments are changed a few times throughout the year. This is bad, but, of course, we need to try,” Ter-Petrosyan stated.

UPDATE 1-Azerbaijan says it forced around 40 Armenian troops to retreat after border incursion

Yahoo! News – Reuters
June 2 2021

(Adds Armenian response, quotes)

BAKU, June 2 (Reuters) – Azerbaijan's defence ministry on Wednesday said around 40 Armenian military personnel had crossed into Azeri territory on Tuesday evening and were forced to retreat, allegations denied by the Armenian side.

Both countries accused each other last month of sending troops across the border in separate incidents, highlighting the fragility of a Russian-brokered ceasefire that halted six weeks of fighting between ethnic Armenian forces and the Azeri army last year.

"As a result of urgent actions taken by the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Armenian armed forces were withdrawn from the territory of our country," the Azeri defence ministry said in a statement.

"No weapons were used by our armed forces during the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces…," it added, describing Armenia's move as a "provocation".

Armenia rejected the accusations, describing its neighbour's claims as "disinformation".

"Such disinformation is disseminated by Azerbaijan's military and political leadership to impress the international community," Russia's TASS news agency cited Armenia's defence ministry as saying.

Last year's conflict saw Baku drive ethnic Armenian forces out of swathes of territory they had controlled since the 1990s in and around the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenian Republican Party: It’s possible to restore borders of Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast with Lachin corridor

News.am, Armenia
June 2 2021

Based on our notion, restoration of the borders of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO), along with the Lachin corridor, is feasible, but will require serious efforts. This is what member of the Executive Body of the Republican Party of Armenia Gagik Minasyan told reporters today.

Minasyan clarified that the document according to which the territory of the NKAO would obtain an interim status is still on the table, and even though it will be very difficult, it is possible to achieve implementation of the provisions stated in the document since Azerbaijani troops are already located in certain areas. “This needs to be done very quickly since we don’t know what document the incumbent authorities have signed. It’s not that easy to destroy all that the Republican Party of Armenia did during its administration. During the first two years in power, the new authorities wouldn’t use the term ‘self-determination’ at all, but this principle is enshrined in the Madrid Principles, as well as in the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) ratified by member states of the European Union,” Minasyan added.

Minasyan recalled the remarks of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, who said he was offered an option according to which “Lachin and Karvachar would be permanently transferred to Armenia”, taking into consideration the fact that those two regions would be transferred to Azerbaijan only after determination of the final status of Nagorno-Karabakh.
