ICC Partners with Armenian Assembly of America to Host Event on Nagorno-Karabakh
03/15/2021 Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) – International Christian Concern (ICC) will be hosting a virtual event on Wednesday, March 17th at 10am EST entitled, Anatomy of Genocide: Karabakh’s Forty-Four Day War. The event will be hosted with the Armenian Assembly of America, covering the aggressions of Azerbaijan and Turkey last Fall in Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenian: Artsakh) against Armenia. Robert Avetisyan, the Permanent Representative of Artsakh to the United States, will deliver remarks, joined by representatives from ICC and the Armenian Assembly.
Last September, Azerbaijani forces attacked Nagorno-Karabakh without warning with the support and endorsement of Turkey. What followed was forty-four days of bloodshed, which included various war crimes committed by Azerbaijani forces and Turkish-paid Syrian mercenaries, concluding with a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement. The conflict resulted in Armenia ceding control of Artsakh to Azerbaijan, despite the majority Armenian population of the region.
However, this conflict was about more than mere territorial control of Artsakh; the Turkish and Azerbaijani messaging of the brief war paint a much broader picture. Both states continually used symbolic narratives that promoted their shared Pan-Turkic identity, with an intention to eliminate the Armenian identity completely from Artsakh. The degrading treatment of Armenian Christians illustrates this desire, remnant of the treatment of Armenians during the genocide of the early 20th century. For this reason, Turkish and Azerbaijani ambition still threatens the mere existence of Armenians on account of their ethnicity and religion.
ICC recently published an in-depth report outlining these details and the broader issues of the conflict, entitled, The Anatomy of Genocide: Karabakh’s Forty-Four Day War.
This event is meant to further delve into the conflict itself, while also highlighting the problems that face Armenians moving forward and providing recommendations for U.S. policymakers on how to address these issues. The event will be held on Zoom and recorded for viewers who are unable to attend live.

Street near Armenia parliament closed for 4 hours, police lined up, demonstrators plan to spend night
Citizens demanding the resignation of Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan have been keeping the entrance to the National Assembly from Demirtchyan Street closed for nearly four hours and have declared that they will prohibit the entry and exit of deputies into and from the building until they fulfill the people’s demand and make Pashinyan resign.
They have pitched tents and lit a bonfire on the street and have declared that they will spend the night there.
Police have flooded Marshal Baghramyan Avenue and Demirtchyan Street. The presses have spread information that the demonstrators might be dispersed through force at night.
Coordinator of the opposition Homeland Salvation Movement Ishkhan Saghatelyan said police troops are being brought to Yerevan from all provinces of the country and told the police to stand with the army and not follow the “unlawful instructions of a mad man”. Saghatelyan also declared that the opposition is giving Pashinyan until noon tomorrow to resign and added that Pashinyan’s statements about his intention to hold snap elections are phony.
EU Parliamentarians are asking the High Representative about concrete measures to return the Armenian captives
On the initiative of the Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Costas Mavrides (S&D, Cyprus) 30 MEPs from all the main political groups addressed a priority written question to the EU High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell.
As European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD)reports the MEPs are asking what concrete steps the EU has taken to achieve the return of the Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) and other captives, including civilians and women held by Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan continues to keep many hostage despite the trilateral ceasefire statement of 10.11.2020 (which stopped the war in Nagorno Karabakh/Artsakh) and the reached agreement, stipulating the return of all the captives and prisoners of war.
Furthermore, the MEPs are asking the EU High Representative what measures the EU has taken to prevent the abuse and instrumentalization of Armenian captives, PoWs for political purposes and ensure that the Red Cross can visit them. To conclude the parliamentarians are raising the question whether the EU has requested Azerbaijan to communicate the exact number of the captives and if yes, what number has been communicated.
Elaborating on the cross-party written question MEP Mavrides stated: “In the face of the crimes against humanity, we cannot remain silent. That is why together with my colleagues from different political parties and member-states, we call on the EU to step up and proceed with concrete actions to achieve the fulfilment of paragraph 8 of the reached agreement, particularly with the return of the Armenian captives, prisoners of war, including civilians and women, being held by Azerbaijan despite the agreement. Azerbaijan blatantly violates the international law and we need to be vocal on this purely humanitarian issue.”
Commenting on the initiative of the MEPs, the EAFJD President Kaspar Karampetian said: “It is evident that violating the reached agreement Azerbaijan is abusing this humanitarian issue to elicit political gain and inflict more suffering.” “We welcome this initiative of the MEPs led by Mr. Mavrides. It is high time that the EU executive branch and the leaders of the EU Member states act. Human rights and human dignity are more than words and cannot be a bargaining chip. As EU citizens we expect the EU to use every diplomatic, political leverage and to stop this intolerable abuse of human dignity by the Azerbaijani authorities. It must be made clear that Azerbaijan has to respect its own commitment and immediately return all the Armenian captives,” Karampetian concluded.

Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Group Questioned in Court
02/25/2021 Turkey (International Christian Concern) – Civil society group Anadolu Kültür (Anatolian Culture), founded by Osman Kavala, is being brought to court by Turkey’s trade ministry for an investigation into its public filing. The organization was founded in 2002 to promote cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through the arts, which included Armenian culture and its historically Christian heritage.
The recent lawsuit accuses the company of operating as a non-profit despite its registration as a company. It is believed that the charges are an attempt to continue to smear Kavala’s name as he has remained in solitary confinement and imprisoned since November 2017. The organization will appear in court on April 15.
In 2016, prior to his imprisonment, Kavala utilized Anadolu Kültür as a way of increasing reconciliation efforts between Turks and Armenians, as outlined in ICC’s Turkey Report. Calling into question the validity of this company further promotes the idea that Armenians and Christians are inherently anti-Turkish and should not be engaged or condoned in any manner.
Artsakh parliament factions call on international community to recognize, condemn Sumgait genocide
The last days of February mark the 33rd anniversary of another crime committed against the Armenian people: the Sumgait genocide. The Media and Public Relations Department of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) National Assembly noted this in a statement.
"These massacres are fully in line with the legal definition of genocide, crimes against humanity as defined by the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
The Sumgait genocide was the response of the Azerbaijani authorities to the struggle of the Artsakh Armenians for their freedom and self-determination, which began in February 1988.
The peaceful population of the [then] NKAO [i.e., Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast] also became the target of large-scale aggression by Azerbaijan. It was manifested more inhumanely during the new war unleashed by Azerbaijan in the fall of 2020.
The factions of the National Assembly of the Artsakh Republic call on the international community, countries and organizations respecting fundamental human rights and freedoms to recognize and condemn the Sumgait genocide and Azerbaijan's anti-Armenian policy," the statement also reads.
