Turkish Press: Turkey, Azerbaijan sign protocol of alliance

Hurriyet, Turkey
June 15 2021

Turkey and Azerbaijan have signed a protocol of alliance in a bid to further strengthen their ties following the latter’s victory in Nagorno-Karabakh that liberated occupied Azeri lands from Armenian occupation.

The protocol was signed between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Azerbaijan President İlham Aliyev in Shusha, a city liberated by the Azeri army during the six-week armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in late 2020.

“With the Shusha Protocol, we have determined the road map of our relations in the new term. It’s very important that this protocol has been materialized in Shusha. This protocol contains a lot of aspects of our relations as well as the vision in regards to our region,” Erdoğan told a press conference with Aliyev.

Aliyev, for his part, said they will never forget the support Turkey has lent during his country’s efforts to liberate its lands.

Erdoğan informed that Turkey is planning to open a general consulate in Shusha in a bid to intensify Turkey’s contribution to Azerbaijan’s reconstruction of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“We will also contribute to Azerbaijan’s efforts to reconstruct the region in the way we did for the liberation of its territories,” the president said, appreciating Baku’s intensified infrastructure works in the region.

“We call on everybody to look at the future. There are new cooperation opportunities for everybody. We, as Turkey, want to further deepen our geographical relations through cooperation,” he stated.

Recalling Turkey’s calls for a regional initiative with the participation of six countries, including Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, Iran and Armenia, Erdoğan called on Yerevan to positively respond to these calls for peace and stability.

In case all the parties would abandon hate politics and provocations in the region and Azerbaijan and Armenia would sign a comprehensive peace agreement, then Turkey will take steps for the normalization of its ties with Yerevan, Erdoğan stated.

According to the Anadolu Agency, the protocol suggests “In the event of a third state’s threat to the independence or territorial integrity of any of the parties, the parties will provide the necessary assistance to each other.”

The parties make joint efforts to resolve regional and global security and stability issues, it reads, adding “The parties state that the military-political cooperation developed between the two states and in line with their interests is not against third states.”

Dutch Parliament adopts new resolution calling for release of Armenian POWs and civilians

Public Radio of Armenia
June 17 2021

A new resolution by the Dutch Parliament calls for the immediate release of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians, the Armenian Embassy in the Netherlands informs.

As a result of extensive discussions in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Dutch Parliament on Wednesday, at today’s plenary session the parliament passed a resolution by an overwhelming majority of votes (147 to 3), demanding the release of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians.

The MPs remind that the return of prisoners is part of a trilateral statement signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan with Russian mediation.

They note that the Geneva Convention obliges the parties to release the captives immediately after the cessation of hostilities.

The lawmakers call on the Foreign Minister to put pressure on Azerbaijan in the European Council to immediately repatriate all Armenian prisoners.

Robert Kocharyan: We’ll do everything possible to meet expectations and build Armenia of our dreams

News.am, Armenia

We will do everything we can to meet your expectations and build the Armenia of our dreams together. Robert Kocharyan—leader of “Armenia” bloc and its candidate for premier—said during the bloc’s rally at Republic Square today.

“Today is the last day of the election campaign. My partners have already told me that we have visited all the provinces, as well as cities and villages of the country. Now we have a better understanding of how you are all living, what you need and what problems the country is facing. I am grateful to all those who met with us and helped us better understand what is going on and inspired us. Thank you. However, it’s important to state that we started the campaign and will end it with a victorious march.

We have also understood that this isn’t a struggle for power. This is a struggle to return statehood to the people. There are four main issues facing the country, including 1. protection of the country and return of borders, 2. the future of Nagorno-Karabakh, 3. the economic situation, unemployment, poverty and migration and 4. the super tense political atmosphere and hatred. The incumbent authorities are unable to solve these issues since they created these issues. Unlike the current political authorities, we have experience, knowledge, determination and will. Trust us, give us the opportunity to assume responsibility for the future of the country, advance the country in all directions, make the army strong again and revive the economy. And so, on June 20, vote for #24. We’re all fighting for our votes, but not only during the vote, but also after the vote in order to make sure the votes aren’t lost. Let’s all move towards a strong Armenia. Everything is going to be alright,” Kocharyan said.

After his speech, famous Armenian singer and Kocharyan’s daughter-in-law, Sirusho addressed the attendees with a song.

Looking at the thousands of people at Republic Square, the candidate for premier noted the following: “This image is very impressive and binding. This will make me work hard day and night. We’ll do everything we can to meet your expectations and build the Armenia of our dreams together.”

Macron Again Calls on Baku to Pull Out of Armenia

French President Emanuel Macron welcomes Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to Paris on June 1

“The Azerbaijani forces should withdraw from the sovereign territory of Armenia and I call on the sides to return to their initial positions,” President Emmanuel Macron of France said, after welcoming Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to Paris on Tuesday.

Pashinyan is in Paris, and will travel to Brussels later this week, to discuss with European allies the current border standoff, which started on May 12 when Azerbaijani forces breached Armenia’s sovereign border and advance to positions in Gegharkunik and Syunik provinces in Armenia proper. Last week Azerbaijani forces shot and killed and Armenian soldiers and, on Thursday, captured six Armenian soldiers in the Gegharkunik Province.

“France stands with Armenia,” Macron said. “In this difficult period France is determined to bring peace to the region.”

Armenia is facing a security crisis, and France is determined that peace be established in the region, Macron said, adding that “a lot still needs to be done,” despite the sides observing the fragile ceasefire reached via the November 9 agreement.

The French leader expressed readiness to support Armenia in its current predicament, saying that first and foremost Azerbaijan must return all prisoners of war and captives. He also reflected on the ongoing campaign to destroy Armenian cultural and religious sites.

“The preservation of heritage in Nagorno Karabakh and adjacent territories is also an important issue. Both the Christian and the Muslim heritage must be definitely preserved. As a Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, it’s the duty of France to do everything so that the sides reach de-escalation and establish dialogue,” added Macron before heading into a one-on-one meeting with Pashinyan.

“We have also provided exceptional assistance to the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross engaged in supporting the war prisoners kept in Azerbaijan and their families, as well as the search operations of those missing in action,” explained Macron.

Pashinyan was greeted by angry protesters in Paris

Pashinyan thanked Macron for his and France’s leadership in this and crises that have impacted Armenia in the past year.

“I want to underscore a very important factor, which is that President Macron has spoken the truth since the first day of the crisis in our region and his voice has been heard all over the world. This is very important for us. I want to also emphasize that France and President Macron continue that commitment and that’s extremely important for overcoming the crisis situation in our region,” Pashinyan said.

Macron became the first world leader to call on Azerbaijan to withdraw its troops from Armenia a day after Azerbaijani forces breached the borders.

Pashinyan also praised France’s role as a co-chairing country of the OSCE Minks Group, saying mediation efforts by the co-chairs are important to arrive at a lasting peace in the region.

Upon his arrival in Paris, Pashinyan was met with angry protesters who had gathered in support of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.

The chair of the Coordinating Committee of Armenian Organizations in France, ARF Bureau member Murad Papazian told Yerkir.am, equated Pashinyan’s insistence to visit France as political pan-handling.

More than 10 000 signatories join The FUTURE ARMENIAN Initiative

Public Radio of Armenia
June 2 2021

More than 10 thousand people from Armenia and all over the world have joined The FUTURE ARMENIAN public Initiative. The signatories are mainly from Armenia – 57%, Russia – 17%, the United States – 10%, people from Canada, Argentina, France, Germany, and other countries have also joined the Initiative. Discussions, meetings, workshops will be organized with them to discuss and determine the best way to achieve the 15 goals of the Initiative.

The FUTURE ARMENIAN Initiative aims to foster a dialogue that leads to a common framework of understanding around the sustainable development of Armenia and Armenians as a nation. The Initiative group includes Richard Azarnia (France), Artur Alaverdyan (Armenia), Noubar Afeyan (USA), and Ruben Vardanyan (Russia).

“The FUTURE ARMENIAN is a public Initiative aimed at defining important objectives that can help take Armenia to a much better place in the future, by being realistic about the current situation and also realistic about what might be the strengths of Armenia’s nation, its reach around the world, its economy, its resources. We need to build a plan for the future that we can get all Armenians first engaged with and working towards. And that is the goal of The FUTURE ARMENIAN,” says Noubar Afeyan, The FUTURE ARMENIAN Co-Initiator.

The next goal of the Initiative is to involve 30,000 signatories. Only they will receive articles on the analysis of 15 goals before publication, and the special report developed by McKinsey & Company and the program on the development of Armenia.

“We try to unite people who think about the future, want to join, discuss together and plan our next steps. This is a pan-Armenian Initiative; we invite everyone to join on an equal basis. This is our common problem. We are convinced that no small group can solve all these problems alone,” says Artur Alaverdyan, The FUTURE ARMENIAN Co-Initiator.

“Today is a very difficult time for us, but at the same time, we all believe that this is a great opportunity to rethink many things, change some of the approaches that wouldn’t have been done before and try to do something new. This new Initiative started with the message that we do not want to give answers. We want to raise key points so that people can talk, debate on what kind of future we want to see collectively for our nation, our state, the relationship between the Diaspora and our state, our relationship with Armenia and Artsakh,” says Ruben Vardanyan, The FUTURE ARMENIAN Co-Initiator.

The Initiative intends to encourage open debate to select a future that would appeal and galvanize the collective forces of Armenia and Armenians globally. The Initiative is aimed at involving 100 thousand signatories.

“I think Armenia should take advantage of the Diaspora. We have to rethink our role as citizens, as individuals, as part of a network which Armenia already is, Armenians already are, and develop that new social contract on the back of a historical strength that we have and the willingness for Diasporans to engage and support Armenia”, says Richard Azarnia, The FUTURE ARMENIAN Co-Initiator. Anyone interested can become a signatory by visiting www.futurearmenian.com, participating in the upcoming discussions of The FUTURE ARMENIAN Initiative, and planning the next steps together.
