Moscow catches you by your throat – polish journalists (video)

Polish journalists have come to Armenia and ask themselves: what Armenia means when they say that it is an independent state?

Yadvigua Khmelevskaya, editor of polish newspaper, says: “In any country there is freedom as far as property is concerned. It is very dangerous that many things in Armenia are in the hands of Russia.”  Yadvigua Khmelevskaya and Pyotr Khlebovich are members of the Polish liberation movement, one of the founders of the famous Solidarity. They talked about how Russia keeps Armenia in its hands. “Moscow always scares Armenia by Turks, Azerbaijanis and others; they have been caught by your throat.”

They recall that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Poland could not get rid of Russia’s influence for many years.

Pyotr Khlebovich does not know much about Armenia, but with the naked eye he can see that we are under Russian control, and there is no freedom of speech here.

David Barsamian to speak in Taos

The Taos news, New Mexico
Oct 8 2017

Posted Sunday, October 8, 2017 10:50 am

David Barsamian, founder of Alternative Radio, will speak in Taos on Tuesday (Oct. 10), 7 p.m., at at the Harwood Museum of Art, 238 Ledoux Street. The presentation is a collaborative event presented by the Harwood and KCIE 90.1 FM Cultural Energy Independent Radio.

The title of Barsamian's talk is 'Resistance in the Age of Trump."

"Today in a country where magical thinking is heard at the highest levels of government, facts are up for grabs," a statement on the talk from alternativeradio.org reads. "You have your narrative. I have mine. Recall Trump aide Kellyanne Conway’s now infamous 'alternative facts' comment. Are we sliding toward a dystopian future? Not necessarily. Informed and organized people, unafraid and willing to challenge power, can change the system."

Barsamian has been called "one of America’s most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists" who has "altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio, now in its 32th year, and with his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Arundhati Roy, Richard Wolff, Tariq Ali, and Edward Said."

His 11th book with Noam Chomsky, “Global Discontents” is coming out in November.

A press release states, "Barsamian is an investigative journalist, but in a unique way. He digs by finding often unheard of activists and then letting speak in their own voices in his hour long weekly radio shows, broadcast on more that 200 stations. His most difficult interview was one of the first he did with his mother, a refugee and survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Rebelliousness saw him drop out of San Francisco State and ship out on a Norwegian freighter to work as a prep cook until he in Asia and began an odyssey lasting five years, hitchhiking across borders and studying the sitar and Raga music to become a master musician in India.

"In 1978 he came to visit his sister in Boulder, and discovered the new public radio station KGNU, volunteered and quickly developed into a national broadcaster when he started Alternative Radio. Speaking five languages, including Hindi and Urdu, he continued to travel all over Asia, until seven years ago he was banned from India for his outspoken coverage of the repression of Adivasis, or the indigenous peoples of India, and the oppression of the people of Kashmir."

In a statement, Barsamian says, “I have no degrees to speak of. Which in this work actually proves to be an advantage because I didn’t have to unlearn the propaganda that is primarily a lot of what ‘lower education,’ as I call it, provides. So I came to things pretty fresh, pretty raw. I’ve always been a rebel, even as a kid. I was asking lots of questions. Why? Why? I used to drive my mother crazy.”

Barsamian has spoken out for the environment, justice & free speech, crisscrossing the U.S, Canada, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, Armenia and Turkey, speaking at scores of universities, conferences, peace groups, bookstores, and benefit events, the release continues. By traveling to grassroots groups all around the world, he is able to find the up and coming leaders that he brings to his radio show, and keep in touch with those outside the media bubble.

Barsamian is the winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU's Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. The Institute for Alternative Journalism named him one of its Top Ten Media Heroes. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center. In 2017 the South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy presented him with their Lifetime Achievement Award for giving voice through alternative media to the oppressed communities and those fighting against repression.

He is also is a board member of Cultural Energy, the local organization that brought KCEI 90.1 FM to the air a year ago.

Tickets are $10 or $8 for Harwood Alliance members. They can be purchased through the Harwood Museum. Call (575) 758-9826, ext. 0 or visit harwoodmuseum.org.

“A1 +” condemns violence against journalist

“A1 +” condemns the attack on Narine Avetisyan, “Lori” TV Editor-in-Chief. “A person who is raising his hand on a journalist, especially a woman, cannot have a place in society. The police should isolate him,” says Mesrop Movsesyan, head of A1+ TV. It should be reminded that during the professional duties, Tigran Nazaryan, the head of the “Shniplus” construction company, attacked her.

“He and his men pushed me to the ground by his order, twisted my arms and took away my phone,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

ANCA-WR Endorses Dr. Kathie Allen in Upcoming Special Congressional Election in Utah

Dr. Kathie Allen meets ANCA-WR leadership at organization’s headquarters to discuss Armenian-American priorities and her race for Congress. From left: Consultant for Dr. Allen’s campaign and former ANCA-WR Executive Director, Elen Asatryan; ANCA-WR Board member Berdj Karapetian; ANCA-WR Chair Nora Hovsepian; Dr. Kathie Allen; and ANCA-WR Advisory Board member Levon Kirakosian.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Earlier today, the Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region (ANCA-WR) announced its endorsement of Dr. Kathie Allen for United States Congress.  The endorsement comes in the course of Utah’s 3rd district’s special election to replace Rep. Jason Chaffetz who officially resigned from his seat in May. Dr. Allen will face Republican John Curtis and a collection of third-party candidates in the general election on November 7, 2017.

“The ANCA-Western Region is proud to endorse the candidacy of Dr. Kathie Allen for US Congress. As a dedicated Armenian-American and granddaughter of Genocide survivors who cares deeply about issues important to all of us, we are confident that Dr. Kathie will continue to serve as a strong advocate for our Cause in the halls of government,” stated ANCA-WR Chair Nora Hovsepian.

“I am grateful and honored to receive ANCA’s endorsement and look forward to working with them during my campaign and when in Congress on issues of importance to the Armenian-American community,” stated Allen. “It is crucial that Turkey and the US formally recognize the Armenian genocide, and I will push for that in Congress along with improving bilateral relations between Armenia and the US. I also believe that Artsakh is entitled to self-determination and that de-mining efforts must continue to make this region safe. My grandparents fled Turkey in 1905 to begin a new life in the United States, and these are all important and personal foreign policy issues for me,” she added.

The organization’s decision came after a thorough endorsement process and meeting this past Saturday when Dr. Allen was visiting Los Angeles, and is based on her deep roots and understanding of issues important to the Armenian-American community.  In addition to the proper recognition and resolution of the Armenian Genocide and Artsakh’s right for self-determination and independence, discussion topics during the meeting included health care, President Trump’s immigration ban, and education, among others.

Several Armenian-Americans have also already agreed to support Dr. Kathie Allen by hosting meet-and-greet fundraisers.  The first is planned for October 12, 2017, at Cedars of Lebanon Restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Raffi and Marlene Daghlian, while the second is planned for October 15 in Glendale, CA by Mr. Mike Sarian.  Individuals interested in attending these events or donating to Dr. Allen’s campaign may contact Elen Asatryan of The Stark Group at 818.672.6260 or email [email protected].

As a family doctor, Dr. Kathie Allen spent thirty years caring for her patients—analyzing their symptoms, diagnosing their problems, and helping them get well. With health care as her top campaign priority, she wants to do the same thing for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District.

Just two days ago, her opponent was caught sponsoring inflammatory, anti-immigrant ads on Facebook, which encouraged his supporters to sign petitions to “build the wall” and end sanctuary cities. His subsequent “explanation” made it clear that he will be another rubber stamp in Congress for the Trump agenda. Dr. Allen, in contrast, supports compassionate immigration policy that allows families to stay together. She is a passionate supporter of DACA and the Dreamers. She has said previously, “Immigrants are the bedrock of our nation. Dreamers are the topsoil.”

Dr. Allen’s main opponent, Provo Mayor John Curtis, is currently polling 20 points below the previous Republican to run for this seat. Additionally, third party candidate Jim Bennett, son of popular former US Senator Bob Bennett, has qualified to participate in the Utah Debate Commission’s official debate on October 18th. He is poised to further erode John Curtis’s vote share.

Dr. Allen won the Democratic Party’s nomination with 77 percent of the convention vote. Unlike her opponent, she did not face primary challengers. Additionally, she has raised more money for than any Democratic candidate in the history of this Congressional seat. She has currently secured the endorsement of 314 Action, a group dedicated to supporting candidates with scientific backgrounds, as well as numerous individuals both within her district and across the country, with more expected to come soon.

Born and raised in California, Dr. Allen finished college while writing radio ads for Shirley N. Pettis’s congressional campaign. After Mrs. Pettis’s victory, Kathie stayed on as a congressional aide for three years. She then worked for a community housing program in San Bernardino, where she saw firsthand how impoverished Americans have to live.

After graduating from Loma Linda University’s medical school in 1984 in the top third of her class, Dr. Allen moved to Salt Lake City to complete her residency. She has lived in Utah ever since. She practiced family medicine in Kearns and West Valley City, and operated a self-owned clinic for 23 years—while earning a new credential for sports medicine. Unlike many other doctors, Dr. Allen has continuously maintained her certification since 1987.

Dr. Allen has been very active in the Utah Medical Association, holding the offices of Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice-Speaker of the House of Delegates. She not only learned parliamentary procedure during this time but also worked with the Utah State Legislature to pass insurance reform. She currently practices medicine at the Utah Transit Authority’s clinic in Salt Lake City.

In early 2017, she founded the Fair Redistricting Caucus of Utah as a Facebook Group.  It now has over 1400 members and a Steering Committee addressing ways to combat gerrymandering in Utah.  Dr. Allen represents the FRCU on the Utah Redistricting Coalition and participates in a legal advisory group as well.

Her original family name was Poladian. This Armenian family lived in Istanbul in the 1800s, then migrated to Harput, Turkey, and changed their name to Ghourighian. Her Poladian grandparents came to America to escape the Armenian genocide. They arrived in New York City on January 8, 1905, with only $20. They settled in Brookshire, Texas, and started a grocery store business. Her grandfather’s cousin was the scion of a large family of Armenians who had success in Texas oil fields and politics. Dr. Allen’s maternal grandmother died when her mother was only three years old, and her grandfather sent to Turkey for a new bride. Neither he nor his bride disclosed that they each already had a child, which made for interesting family dynamics when she arrived in Texas! After learning this family history, her lifelong love of Balkan folk music began to make sense.

Dr. Allen has been married for 27 years to Craig Fineshriber, retired Principal Percussionist of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. She has three stepchildren and two grandchildren. In her spare time, she directs the Darena Balkan Womens’ Choir, which performed during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games.

The winner of the general election on November 7, 2017, will complete Chaffetz’s term and be up for reelection in 2018.  In order to vote, you must be registered.  To register to vote online, visit https://secure.utah.gov/voterreg/index.html.  If you have moved since you last registered to vote, you must re-register, and may do so at the above link.  Voters have an option to vote from home by mail or on Election Day, November 7, between 7 am and 8 pm. Community members who have already registered to vote should expect to receive their ballots in the mail week of October 16. To learn more about the election, visit vote.utah.gov.

Utah’s 3rd congressional district includes portions of Salt Lake and Utah Counties, as well as all of Wasatch, Carbon, Grand, Emery, and San Juan Counties.

To learn more about Dr. Allen or to volunteer, please visit www.drkathieallenforcongress.com.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region is the largest and most influential Armenian-American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues.

Schiff Urges Expansion of Armenian Genocide Education in California

Adam Schiff (Photo: Glendale News Press)

LOS ANGELES – On September 20, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced that, along with seven of his California delegation colleagues, he wrote to major publishers of social studies and history textbooks in California to urge them to include additional information and context about the Armenian Genocide.

In 2014, Governor Brown signed AB 1915, requiring the Armenian Genocide to be incorporated into high school social studies and history curriculums. The letter asks textbook publishers to include additional information about the Armenian Genocide in forthcoming textbook editions, noting that it “help students learn about the Genocide both as an independent historical event, but also situated in the broader context of modern genocides, ethnic cleansing, and systemic human rights abuses.”

“The Armenian Genocide is a seminal event, and belongs in any course of study that considers human rights and genocide in history and in the modern context,” Rep. Schiff said. “California has taken the lead in encouraging the study of the Armenian Genocide in social studies and history classes, but putting that principle into practice will require textbook publishers to develop new texts that properly address the Genocide, and contextualize it with other 20th century genocides, as well as informing students about the unprecedented humanitarian response to the Genocide by the United States.”

In addition to Rep. Schiff, the letter was signed by Rep. Jackie Speier, Rep. Anna Eshoo, Rep. Judy Chu, Rep. Grace Napolitano, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, Rep. Brad Sherman, and Rep. Alan Lowenthal.

Edvard Nalbandyan: I do not think that you are coward in Marseille (video)

At today’s Armenia-Diaspora Conference, one of the Diaspora Armenians askedEdward Nalbandyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs “There is one word that scares especially the patriots of Marseille. That is the word compromise. I was asked to ask you: what do we have to rebate; and is the word compromise used during the negotiations?”

Edward Nalbandyan answered. “Someone tells me: You have to solve the Karabakh conflict, we cannot wait anymore. And I answer: Come and solve it. Don’t we want to solve the problem? What are we doing then? I am telling you about where we were and where we are now in the negotiation process and where the international community was and is now, in terms of understanding our positions and our approach. In my statement I have mentioned the amount of the announcements made by  Co-Chair countries, which say that yes, Azerbaijan violates, Azerbaijan, stop criticizing the Co-Chair countries! Stop trying to move the negotiation process to another format! Do you find any of the compromises are frightening? There are so many people in Marseille; I do not think that you are cowards there, in Marseille. I do not think that Azerbaijan would not accept the compromises they had found anything for their benefit. Why does not Azerbaijan accept then?”

Sports: Billionaire Samvel Karapetyan sponsors Moscow’s Ararat F.C.

Armenpress News Agency , Armenia
September 9, 2017 Saturday

Billionaire Samvel Karapetyan sponsors Moscow's Ararat F.C.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 9, ARMENPRESS. One of the top sponsors of Moscow’s
Ararat F.C. is the Russia-based Armenian businessman Samvel
Karapetyan, president of Tashir group of companies, local media
reported citing the new owner of the football club Aram Gabrelyanov.

Gabrelyanov also mentioned that co-owner of Avilon Kamo Avagumyan is
also a sponsor of the club.

“These people helped us when we were initiating the club’s stock
programs. Indeed, this was help. We could stick Avilon’s logo on the
shirts of the players for the beginning, however this isn’t what’s
important now”, he said.

He said Ararat F.C.’s budget is 150-180 million Rubles.

Zara Ajemyan, a representative for Tashir, confirmed that Samvel
Karapetyan has financed Ararat F.C.

“Mr. Karapetyan has indeed financed the program. He has traditionally
assisted the development of sports in both Russia and Armenia”, she
said.

Avilon confirmed that Kamo Avagumyan is planning to acquire shares of
Moscow’s Ararat.

Government improves payment procedure of military pension

The Armenian government is optimizing the payment procedure of military pensions.

The government adopted the relevant decision during today’s Cabinet meeting.

Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Artem Asatryan said that previously the pensions for the military were calculated and paid through a separate database.

“Now they will be calculated in the general pension system and will be paid through HayPost national post operators”, he said.

Artsakh’s Independence is Sacred and Cannot be Compromised

Artsakh’s Independence

On September 2, 1991, when Artsakh declared independence from the Soviet Union and Azerbaijan it was its first _expression_ of self-determination. That independence was later approved in a referendum cementing the people’s will to decide their fate and to utilize any means to defend themselves against an aggressive enemy that was relentlessly attacking Artsakh on all fronts. Artsakh’s declaration of independence became its saving grace and as we mark the 26th anniversary of that bold move, we must realize that that very independence is sacred and cannot be compromised.

Earlier this year, the people of Artsakh, once again, went to the polling booth to reaffirm the republic’s independence by amending its Constitution to provide more powers to local government and give its people the ability to govern themselves. Another provision of the new Constitution changed the name of the republic to Artsakh from its former Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

In 26 years, the people of Artsakh have endured hardship and continue to live under the threat of war, as Azerbaijan relentlessly violates the cease-fire agreement and attacks Artsakh’s borders. Yet the very people who brave those adversities on a daily basis understand that theirs is a struggle not merely of individual survival but of the perseverance of a nation.

Similarly, the soldiers who are stationed at the frontlines know full well that they are not defending just the Artsakh borders, but those of a homeland—the entire Armenian Nation.

Since the April War in 2016, which was the worst breach by Azerbaijan of the cease-fire agreement since its signing in 1994, the international community has continued to mediate the Karabakh conflict based on the same—unacceptable—principles agreed upon, without taking into consideration that Azerbaijan, as a party to the conflict, is unwilling or unable to negotiate in a civilized manner.

Recent reports indicating that Azerbaijan forced Israeli contractors to live launch a suicide drone on Artsakh targets should signal that official Baku does not play according to norms and rules established by the so-called mediators and is willing to engage a third party, in this case Israel, in its military adventures, with reckless disregard and beligerance.

To call the situation in Artsakh volatile would be an understatement.

Yet despite these life-or-death obstacles, the people of Artsakh, and with it the Republic of Artsakh, continue to flourish. Its residents have long accepted their role as the strong pillars of our nation, knowing full-well that they are not alone in this fight; that an entire nation that spans from Yerevan to Los Angeles and beyond are ready, willing and determined to fight for and advance the struggle, because it is a matter of life and death of a nation.

Since February of 1988, when the Artsakh liberation movement was in its nascent stages, we came together as one nation to demand justice, fight and win a war and participate in the strengthening of Artsakh’s statehood.

Today, Artsakh represents the heartbeat of our national liberation struggle and our collective national aspirations. We have shown in the past that together, as a nation, we can confront adversity and emerge victorious.

As one makes a wish when blowing out birthday candles, let us use the 26th anniversary of Artsakh’s independence to not merely make a wish, but to commit ourselves to this ongoing liberation struggle that today is represented by Artsakh, but tomorrow can become the foundations of a Free, United and Independent Armenia.

Long Live Artsakh.
