Republic of Ireland’s Nations League misery continued as Eduard Spertsyan blasted Armenia to victory in Yerevan.

The midfielder hammered a long-range 75th-minute effort past keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, making his competitive debut for Ireland, to hand the League B newcomers victory and revenge for their controversial Euro 2012 qualifier defeat in Dublin.

Stephen Kenny’s men, who have now not won in 11 attempts since the competition was introduced, could have few complaints on a night when their eight-game unbeaten run came to a disappointing end at a sweltering Republican Stadium.

Ireland enjoyed the upper hand for long periods, but failed to convert dominance into chances.

Callum Robinson had a mishit first-half shot cleared off the line and Chiedozie Ogbene headed over when he might have done better, but they wilted after the break and were caught by a sucker punch, albeit one delivered with aplomb.

With skipper Seamus Coleman and Enda Stevens operating as wing-backs, Ireland went straight on to the offensive in an effort to seize the initiative, but it was Kelleher, playing in place of the injured Gavin Bazunu, who was called upon to keep out Tigran Barseghyan’s skidding sixth-minute effort after Nathan Collins had surrendered the ball.

Shane Duffy had to block Spertsyan’s shot at full stretch seconds later and the defender picked up a ninth-minute booking for an untidy challenge on Barseghyan.

Ireland threatened for the first time when Josh Cullen fed Ogbene and he slid the ball into Callum Robinson’s path, but the striker could only ripple the side-netting with his attempt.

Neither side was able to exert any measure of control in an error-strewn passage of play and Robinson might have done better when he scuffed Ogbene’s 16th-minute cross towards goal, where Hovhannes Hambardzumyan cleared off the line.

Duffy headed over from Cullen’s corner with the visitors having regained their composure, but clear-cut openings proved few and far between.

Armenia keeper David Yurchenko caused panic in his own penalty area with a less than effective punch as he attempted to deal with Troy Parrott’s driven cross and Spertsyan survived penalty appeals for handball as Coleman recycled.

Ogbene dragged a 38th-minute shot past the far post after Robinson had collected Hendrick’s fine pass and squared before Parrott curled wide from distance four minutes before the break with Ireland pressing.

However, Ogbene passed up perhaps the best chance of the half in stoppage time when he was left unmarked from Cullen’s free-kick, but powered his header inches over.

The home side served warning of the threat they posed on the break within five minutes of the restart when Barseghyan played Hambardzumyan into space down the right and then collected his return pass before stepping neatly inside Parrott to curl a superb shot into the top corner.

However, the celebrations at the Republican Stadium died almost as soon as they had begun as an offside flag spared Kenny’s side and Barseghyan could not find the same accuracy with a similar effort from greater range six minutes later.

Duffy headed a 62nd-minute Cullen corner straight at Yurchenko and put another attempt wide from Stevens’ cross seconds later as the visitors responded.

Hendrick curled a 69th-minute shot into Yurchenko’s midriff, but it was Armenia who took the lead with 15 minutes left on the clock when Spertsyan was allowed to close in on goal before unleashing a 25-yard strike which beat Kelleher’s despairing dive and went in off the upright.

John Egan thumped a later header wide as the Republic sought salvation but Armenia, who lost 9-0 in Norway last time out, held firm to take the points.

Resistance Movement organizes protest outside Shirak regional administration building

NEWS.am
Armenia – June 1 2022

Supporters of the Resistance Movement organized a protest outside the building of the Shirak regional administration.

"The administration of the Shirak region has always served the Armenian people. But now this structure does not serve their interests. It serves more those buffoons who implement the Turkish program. It would be good if the employees of the regional administration would join our action today. I hope they, watching what is going on, even from their windows, agree with us. Today it's Karabakh, tomorrow it will be Gyumri and Yerevan," said one of the protesters.

The protesters expressed their desire to meet with the governor of Shirak Nazeli Baghdasaryan to clarify her position on the settlement of the Karabakh conflict. But the protesters were told that the governor was not in the building.

There are police officers at the entrance to the Shirak regional administration building.

Turkish press: All trials on FETÖ’s coup bid in Turkey conclude, appeals pending

Six years after the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) tried to seize power with a coup, the Turkish judiciary has managed to wrap up 289 trials against the putschists, sentencing 4,891 defendants. The lengthy appeals process has also concluded, with most trials seeking to overturn verdicts still playing out before higher courts.

On July 15, Turkey will mark the sixth anniversary of the coup attempt that killed 251 people and injured hundreds of others. The attempt was quashed thanks to strong public resistance, coupled with the actions of anti-putschist soldiers and law enforcement.

Determined to deliver swift justice, Turkey has set up new courts and massive prison complexes that also include spacious courtrooms. In the aftermath of the putsch bid, prosecutors’ offices across the country launched more than 100,000 investigations into coup-related crimes. They culminated in 289 trials, with the first verdicts handed out in the eastern province of Erzurum, hometown of FETÖ leader Fetullah Gülen.

A colonel and a major in the province were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment on Jan. 5, 2017 on charges of violating the Constitution. Most recently, the final coup trial in the western province of Çanakkale concluded with prison sentences for several military officers.

Overall, 3,000 defendants were convicted of charges carrying life sentences. A total of 1,634 defendants, including 85 generals, were given aggravated life imprisonment, a sentence that rules out early release or parole. Another 1,366 defendants were sentenced to life, including 24 former generals and 536 high-ranking military officers. A total of 1,891 defendants were sentenced to lesser prison terms while 2,870 people were freed after they were not found guilty.

One of the most significant trials, which ended with hefty sentences, had to do with an assassination attempt targeting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the time of the coup bid. Thirty-one defendants, including a general accused of coordinating the assassination plot, were given multiple aggravated life imprisonment sentences in the trial that concluded in 2017.

Aggravated life sentences were also handed out in major trials dealing with a large number of defendants in the capital Ankara. Among them was the Akıncı base trial, named after the military base where the coup ringleaders planned and coordinated the attempt. It had the highest number of defendants in coup-related trials with 475 people facing charges. Fifteen military officers and four civilians were given aggravated life sentences in the trial that ended in 2020. In another big trial in the capital, in which 224 people were tried for planning and executing the plot to take over the army, 127 defendants were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment and another 23 were given life sentences in 2019.

Although most military officers who took part in the coup bid were sentenced, the "civilian" members of FETÖ remain more elusive. Only a few were caught red-handed during the attempt, including executives and staff of a FETÖ-linked company who were apparently helping the putschists since they were caught at the Akıncı base when the attempt was quelled. They were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment but Adil Öksüz, the alleged mastermind of the coup bid on behalf of ringleader Gülen remains at large. Öksüz, originally a theology lecturer, was also captured at the same base but a court released him shortly after in a controversial decision. Since then, he has disappeared and is believed to be abroad.

As for Gülen, the terrorist group's leader continues his life uninterrupted in a posh residence in Pennsylvania in the United States. One of most wanted men in Turkey, he is the main defendant in a myriad of trials on FETÖ's wrongdoings including the 2016 coup bid. Yet, the United States has so far dragged its feet extraditing him, despite multiple requests by Ankara.
