ArmInfo. Baku reacted to the  statement of the head of the National Security Service of Armenia  Artur Vanetsyan about the impossibility of territorial  concessions.

"We call on the OSCE Minsk Group to condemn such statements by the leadership of Armenia," the statement of the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in response to an Interfax request. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry emphasizes that such statements  contradict the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group on the peaceful  settlement of the conflict, as well as the agreements reached by the  heads of the foreign affairs agencies of Armenia and Azerbaijan in  Paris.

"All responsibility for the consequences of such provocative  statements falls on Armenia," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the  Republic of Azerbaijan stresses. It should be noted that during the  visit to the southern regions of Artsakh, the head of the National  Security Service of Armenia Artur Vanetsyan stated that the talks  about the possible surrender of the territories to Azerbaijan are  speculations. During his visit to the southern regions, Vanetsyan  discussed the program of settling the territory along the bank of the  Araks River with the top leadership of Artsakh. In particular, it is  planned to build the settlement Araksavan, to develop agriculture  here and to create infrastructures. According to Vanetsyan, the  settlement of these territories is one of the main security  guarantees of Artsakh. In the context of the discussions, Vaniecian  noted that the implementation of this project is already a refutation  of speculation that negotiations are underway around possible  territorial concessions. "Implementing this program, we are sending a  clear message to the world that no one will surrender even a single  inch of land. On the contrary, our compatriots should live in our  territories, live and create," said Vanetsyan.

[Armenian News note: the below is translated from Persian]

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has received the visiting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, lauded the historical relations between Tehran and Yerevan and called for the improvement of ties, Leader's official website Khamenei.ir reported on 27 February.

"Despite the Americans' wish, Iran and Armenia should maintain steady, strong, and friendly relations," the leader's website quoted Khamenei as saying. He added: "Americans are totally untrustworthy and they seek to incite unrest, spread corruption, sow discord, and instigate wars wherever they are. They also oppose Iran's [good] relations with Armenia, [which is] to the interests of the [two] nations. But we should boost our ties and our cooperation as a duty."

Speaking the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, Iran's Supreme Leader offered that Tehran can help resolving the issue and advised Armenia and Azerbaijan Republic to continue negotiations in this regard.

Khamenei also praised the ethnic Armenian community in Iran for the "sacrifices they made" during the Iran-Iraq war and lauded the historical friendship between the two nations.

"Iran and Armenia have never had any trouble in their relations. We are required to maintain good relations with our neighbouring countries according to the edicts of Islam. Of course, American officials such as John Bolton cannot understand the human dimensions of these issues," Khamenei told Pashinyan.

For his part, Pashinyan said Armenia "has never took part in any anti-Iranian action and it will never do so in future" and added that in his opinion, improvement of ties with Tehran is in the interests of the Armenian people.

Pashinyan arrived in Tehran this morning and was received by the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. The two of them held a news conference earlier, in which Iran announced that it will be increasing natural gas exports to Armenia.

Canadian Minister cites Syrian-Armenian refugee’s success story

PanArmenian, Armenia
Feb 14 2019

PanARMENIAN.Net – Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Ahmed Hussen has cited Syrian-Armenian refugee Shoushi Bakharian's achievments as a success story that came out from the country’s private refugee sponsorship program, Windzor Star reports.

Hussen was addressing about 200 people at an event at the University of Windsor School of Creative Arts Concert Hall in the former Armouries.

“Canada provided protection to her three years ago, she’s now studying aerospace engineering at Concordia University, she’s studying a fourth language and she’s already made an invention,” Hussen said.

“She’s made an aircraft part that makes the aircraft go faster and emit less emissions. So she’s already making a contribution and she’s the pride of her new community and her new country.”

Bakarian has invented a renewable energy device called Ventus for small general aviation aircrafts in Canada. Earlier this year Shoushi discovered Stratos Aviation a non for profit association located in Dorval on Ryan Avenue which advocates careers and opportunities in aerospace to the next generation of aviation professionals through STEM education and pilot training. She quickly climbed the ranks and today at the young age of 21, she is one of the administrators of the association. Stratos Aviation is a multidisciplinary environment with a hands-on approach to educate and promote all aspects of aviation.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 14, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s unconstructive statements over Artsakh do not contribute to the peace process, Ruben Rubinyan – chairman of the Armenian parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs, said, commenting on Aliyev’s statement according to which Nagorno Karabakh is an integral part of Azerbaijan, reports Armenpress.

“I think that such statements do not contribute to the peace process at all and the launch of effective negotiation process. Our position is the same. We believe that if we really want a meaningful and effective negotiation process and dialogue over peace, a respective environment is needed. This environment is possible by ruling out aggressive rhetoric and actions. And we hope that Azerbaijan will stop using aggressive rhetoric, but, unfortunately, this example shows that this hope is not justified yet”, the lawmaker said.

The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, on Monday stated the aforesaid in his address at a conference devoted to infrastructure development as a new format of state-community cooperation in the country.

He added that multiplication personal and group enrichment by officials and its continuation cannot exist in new Armenia.

Where are Burj Hammoud’s artisans?

Where are Burj Hammoud's artisans?

On the western edge of Burj Hammoud lies the Marash neighborhood – named after the former Ottoman city where Turkish forces massacred Armenian refugees in 1920, amid Turkey's war of independence near the end of the Armenian genocide.

BURJ HAMMOUD, Lebanon: On the western edge of Burj Hammoud lies the Marash neighborhood – named after the former Ottoman city where Turkish forces massacred Armenian refugees in 1920, amid Turkey's war of independence near the end of the Armenian genocide. The small neighborhood was one of the first to be established in Burj Hammoud, which became Lebanon's aptly named "Little Armenia."

Those who settled in Marash were largely craftsmen originating from the eponymous Ottoman city.

"When the buildings were first constructed, most houses and apartments incorporated ateliers where people would work," said Farah Makki, the lead researcher at Nahnoo, a youth-led NGO advocating for cultural preservation.

"Much of the architecture today reflects the old architecture [from the Ottoman Marash]," she said.

But the culture of craftsmanship in Burj Hammoud is not what it used to be. Artisans who have been working for generations in a range of sectors, including textiles, jewelry and woodworking, have started turning to other trades, Makki said, due to a lack of state support for small business.

The Abroyan factory – just a short walk from the Marash neighborhood – is something of a symbol of the changes that are underway in Burj Hammoud.

Once a flourishing Armenian-owned textile factory, it has since been shut down and repurposed into an event space, commonly rented out for parties and art exhibitions, mainly by people from outside the community.

To preserve Burj Hammoud's heritage, particularly that of craftspeople, Nahnoo has embarked on an initiative with aid from the United States Embassy, working for over a year with local artisans and gathering data on obstacles they face in keeping their traditions alive.

"We've identified challenges in Burj Hammoud regarding craftsmanship, to try and understand how to intervene and change policy to save this culture and promote its innovation," Makki said.

"This could be in the form of economic measures to protect local businesses from foreign imported items, educational initiatives or increased targeted tourism."

The main outcome of the project, expected to near completion in the next few months, will be a map detailing the locations of the area's artisans and their trade.

A series of reports will also be issued, elaborating on the challenges in the community and including policy recommendations.

To come up with the recommendations, Nahnoo will consult a variety of stakeholders, including the municipality, the Economy Ministry and the Labor Ministry.

To conduct some of the research, Nahnoo assembled a group of young volunteers at the end of January from a range backgrounds to attend a three-day workshop, to help interview local craftspeople, like Peter Keshian.

The Burj Hammoud resident works part-time creating artisanal briar wood and vulcanite tobacco pipes. However, most of the materials and tools he needs are either low quality in the local market or not available in Lebanon at all.

"The materials I use are from countries around the Mediterranean such as Greece, Algeria, Italy and Corsica. I can get them abroad, but shipments take too much time, as Customs in Lebanon is not fast. Other things I work with, including stains, shellac and bamboo root, are also not good quality here," he told The Daily Star.

The workshop also provided an opportunity for cultural exchange between locals and the volunteers from other areas in Lebanon.

"There are a lot of perceptions about Burj Hammoud," said Pia Chaib, one of the volunteers.

The densely populated area has a reputation for being a low-income neighborhood where many of Beirut's migrant workers and refugees reside. Residents also have to cope with the stench emanating from the notorious Burj Hammoud landfill on the coastal edge of the town.

"As much as you learn about [the area's] history in a classroom, actually meeting people who have been here for generations is much different," Chaib said.

Nahnoo's executive director, Jessica Chemali, underscored that the success of such projects depends on the participation of a diverse cross section of society.

"We should be encouraging everyone to participate in their way, creating spaces for people whether they be craftsmen or in other trades.

"By supporting one another, we're also fostering toward a greater goal of an inclusive society," Chemali said. "Part of being in an inclusive society is to allow a diverse group of people to function and contribute to the economy."

European Court of Human Rights registered complaints of attorneys for RA second president Robert Kocharian

ArmInfo. The European Court of Human Rights has registered complaints from the lawyers of the second President of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharian. This  is reported by a group of lawyers of the second president of the  Republic of Armenia.

According to the source, one of the complaints  concerns the second and third paragraphs of Article Six of the  European Convention, which provides for the presumption of innocence  and the right to defense, which, according to the lawyers,  were  violated. Another complaint concerned the election of an arrest  against Robert Kocharyan as a preventive measure.

The ECtHR secretariat informed Robert Kocharian's defense team that  the court would consider cases as soon as possible.

Note that Robert Kocharyan is accused under Art. 300.1 of the  Criminal Code of Armenia in overthrowing the constitutional system in  the framework of the criminal case on the dispersal of protest  actions on March 1, 2008. On December 7 last year, the Court of  Appeal upheld the verdict of the first instance for the arrest of the  2nd President of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian. Without  waiting for the transfer of the verdict to the investigator, Robert  Kocharyan himself appeared in the "Kentron" penitentiary unit, where  he was later arrested. The office of the second president of Armenia  called the arrest a political vendetta. RPA, however, qualified it as  pressure from the current government on political opponents.
