Professional Armenian boxer Vic Darchinyan, a former WBA, WBC and IBF champion, have arrived in Armenia to have a rest and meet his friends and relatives.

The Armenian athlete announced a plan to quit professional boxing several years ago, however when he received an offer to fight with Russian world boxing champion Yevgeny Gradovich, he was not able to reject it,  Darchinyan told reporters at a news conference on Monday.

“He has a world title belt. If I win, it will be my 10th [belt]. I held a boat within thee weeks and sent its video to Moscow. They keep silent up to now, but keep saying we need to fight,” he said.

The boxing legend noted he has nine world champion belts, seven of which he ‘grabbed’ from the world champions. He now has a great desire to capture the 10th world title belt, which would mark the end of his professional boxer’s career.

Darchinyan also said Armenia does have good boxers, who can achieve heights, however, he added, it would be better for them to undergo trainings in the U.S. for several months. The sportsman unveiled plans to open a promotion company in Armenia, which would give Armenian boxers an opportunity to pave their way into progress.

Darchinyan says the boxers cannot achieve good results here in Armenia amid the lack of appropriate conditions, adding they need sparring partners.

“I want them to engage in many sparring matches abroad, I will give them an opportunity to take part in good tournaments, but it is up to them what achievements they will make in the future,” he said.

Vic Darchinyan says he is ready to train the Armenian boxers as a coach, but cannot devote his entire time to them, claiming it entails a great responsibility.

Asked whether he has any intention of trying himself in mixed martial arts, the boxer said he was previously considering MMA, but later he gave up the intention since he realized he could not make money through it.
The Armenian fighter never misses a chance to visit his homeland. “I love Armenia very much. When I was training, I still visited Armenia three times a year. I received a warm welcome here. I also visited Artsakh again to enjoy a very good welcome,” the boxer said.

Vic Darchinyan said he runs his own boxing club in Australia. He also added that his children also follow his matches, with his elder boy, who is 10 years old, having even been present at his competitions.

Azerbaijani press: Minister: Armenia has no chance to join Azerbaijan’s transport corridors

16:17 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb. 13

By Maksim Tsurkov – Trend:

Armenia does not have a chance to connect to the transport corridors of Azerbaijan, Economy Minister Shahin Mustafayev said at a press conference on the Azerbaijani-Chinese economic relations on Feb.13.

The minister noted that the policy of Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev completely cut off Armenia from regional projects.

"Armenia does not have the slightest chance of using transit corridors passing through the territory of Azerbaijan, which is well understood," the minister said.

He emphasized that the aggression shown by the Armenian society is directed at the country's authorities. "Sure, the citizens of Armenia are asking themselves, why does this happen? Why does Azerbaijan conduct all large transport projects and transit corridors bypassing the territory of Armenia? Thus, the economy of Armenia, which is already in poor state, is plunged into an even greater crisis," Mustafayev said.

Geoffrey Robertson: human rights lawyer made officer of Order of Australia
Robertson frequently criticises refugee policy, warning Australia seen as 'mean and miserable'

by Anne Davies

He's been a frequent critic of Australia's refugee policy, warning Australia risks being seen as "mean and miserable"; he's defended our highest profile fugitive, Julian Assange, and lived for the bulk of his life outside the country.

Now Geoffrey Robertson QC, human rights lawyer and civil rights advocate, has been made an officer of the Order of Australia.

The UK-based barrister was recognised for his "distinguished service to the law and the legal profession as an international human rights lawyer and advocate for global civil liberties". He was also recognised for his contribution to legal education as an academic and publisher.

Born in Australia, the 71-year old Robertson is a regular visitor.

In the 1980s he was host of the popular ABC television program Hypotheticals, in which prominent people were asked to respond to moral dilemmas and outline what they would do.

Robertson grew up in Eastwood and studied law at Sydney University before winning a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford where he was awarded a bachelor of civil law.

Early in his career he forged a reputation for defending artists, writers and publications against Britain's strict laws against indecency. Many of the cases were brought by Christian campaigner Mary Whitehouse.

He has also acted in prominent libel cases, including defending the Guardian against conservative MP Neil Hamilton, who was accused of taking cash for questions in parliament.

Robertson was threatened by terrorists for representing Salman Rushdie, whose novel the Satanic Verses was labelled hate speech by Muslims in Britain and prompted a fatwa from Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini.

In 2010 Robertson unsuccessfully defended Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in extradition proceedings in the UK. Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London and remains there.

Closer to home, Robertson took on the cause of Aboriginal Tasmanians who were seeking to recover 15 sets of bones from London's Natural History Museum. He accused the museum of "genetic prospecting".

In 2015 Robertson and Amal Clooney, who has rooms in Doughty Chambers which Robertson founded, represented Armenia at the European Court of Human Rights over claims of genocide.

Robertson is also a prolific author. He has written about legal issues, famous cases and some controversial subjects.

In The Case of the Pope, Robertson claims Pope Benedict XVI is guilty of protecting paedophiles because the church swore the victims to secrecy and moved perpetrators in Catholic sex abuse cases to other positions where they had access to children while knowing the perpetrators were likely to reoffend.

In 1990, Robertson married the author Kathy Lette, and they lived together in London with their children until their separation in 2017.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Minsk
group should ensure an Armenian withdrawal from Nagorno-Karabkh,
Azerbaijan said Thursday.

"Armenia's aggression and their occupation of our soils remain the
major threat to the security of Azerbaijan," Foreign Ministry
spokesman Hikmet Hajiyev said.

The Minsk group was formed to find a peaceful solution to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Hajiyev called on the group to enforce a UN Security Council
resolution demanding Armenian forces end their occupation of the
Azerbaijani territory.

Nagorno-Karabakh was seized by Armenian secessionists as the Soviet
Union broke up in the late 1980s.
