Little Armenia shooting death probed for link to unsolved 2008 double homicide

March 28, 2010 | 12:21 pm

Authorities continued Sunday to investigate the Little Armenia
shooting death of a 38-year-old woman whose murder is believed to be
connected to an unsolved 2008 double homicide.

Officers responding to a call in the 5800 block of Lexington Avenue
about 8:20 p.m. Friday discovered Karine Hakobyan’s body in the
driver’s seat of her Honda CRV, Los Angeles police said.

Homicide detectives determined that Hakobyan was a relative of Khachik
Safaryan, 43, and his 8-year-old daughter Lusine, who were found shot
to death Dec. 11, 2008, inside their home in the 1200 block of
Tamarind Avenue. No one has been charged with their murders.
Hakobyan’s vehicle was found about two blocks away from Safaryan’s
home.

Robbery-homicide detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department are
investigating the case. Anyone with information about this incident is
asked to call (877) LAPD-24-7. Anonymous tipsters may call (800)
222-8477.

`We need to educate ourselves to the signs that lead to harm and violence’

KITCHENER ` `Hate is dangerous, prejudice is destructive and it’s
these actions that lead to the genocide of a people, Barbara Pressman
told more than 300 students gathered at Kitchener City Hall Friday.

`Imagine when one group wants to kill one group because of their
colour, religion, or sexual orientation,” said Pressman, long-time
president of the Waterloo Region Holocaust Education Committee.

`That’s what genocide is . . . when one group wants to kill another
group that is different from theirs,” she said.

Pressman reminded students gathered to commemorate the UN
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination at the
city rotunda that as a society we must remember the past so we can
ensure it’s not repeated.

But history has shown that murder of a people continues, she said,
naming other groups that have faced genocide of their people. They
include the death of one million Armenians in 1914, six million Jews
during the Second World War, the Cambodian people in the 1970s,
Muslims in Bosnia and the mass killings of Rwanda’s Tutsis and Hutu
moderates in 1994.

The day-long event is sponsored by Cross Cultures and the Social
Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo/Community Information Centre of
Waterloo Region.

Pressman stressed that as individuals we should not rejoice in the
suffering of a human being even if they were the oppressors.

`I have never heard a (Holocaust) survivor talk about hatred of their
captives because this would be a natural feeling,” she said.

Pressmen told the story of listening to a Holocaust survivor tell her
story in which she lost her entire family in a concentration camp at
the hands of the Nazis.

When she was asked if she hated the Germans, she said: `To hate the
Germans, I would have to hate the children.

“Who can hate a child,” Pressman recounted.

Pressman said that the murder of a group starts with an idea ` that
the other is not as good, that they are evil, or that they are vermin.

`We need to educate ourselves to the signs that lead to harm and
violence,” she said.

Pressman told the students to embrace diversity and that difference is
a gift, not something to be feared or hated.

`Diversity gives a richness of life,” she said.

Simone Morrison, a Grade 12 student at Waterloo Oxford District
Secondary School, said the idea of forgiveness stands out for her
especially when she hears the stories of Holocaust survivors who don’t
hate their oppressors.

`When we listen to their stories we get angry. How can someone have so
much hatred and do this to someone else,” said the 18-year-old
student.

Morrison said it’s important to remember forgiveness and she recalls
the anecdote related to hate that her mother often reminds her of.

`My mom says carrying hate is like carrying a heavy garbage bag of
hate on your back,” she said.

You need to get rid of it for yourself, for your peace of mind, Morrison said.

Aziza Mohamed, who came to Canada from Ethiopia in 2008, said she’s
glad students are encouraged to attend the race relations event.

`It’s important to talk about peace,” said the 15-year-old Eastwood
Collegiate Institute student.

Sara Abshir, who came to Kitchener from Kenya last August, attends
Forest Heights Collegiate Institute, a diverse school where she feels
welcome.

But Abshir said talking about racism must continue. `This event shows
there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed.”

Yalim Eralp: Neither Historians Nor Parliamentarians Are Competent A

YALIM ERALP: NEITHER HISTORIANS NOR PARLIAMENTARIANS ARE COMPETENT AUTHORITY IN GENOCIDE ISSUE

PanARMENIAN.Net
25.03.2010 19:19 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ From legal viewpoint, Turkish government has no
right to recognize the Armenian Genocide, as it wasn’t provided with
any resolution of international instances. No Turkish government has
the authority to acknowledge 1915’s events as Genocide until it’s
done by the international court, former Turkish diplomat, foreign
policy expert Yalim Eralp stated.

As the expert told PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, he neither denies nor
acknowledges the Armenian Genocide. The expert said adoption of
Genocide resolution by dozens of states worldwide does not equal a
legal judgement.

"I’m exasperated at the position of Turkish government maintaining
it lost the issue by one vote. What if we won by one vote, would the
resolution of parliament be able to transform the history?"

Yalim Eralp offered applying to arbitration tribunal for final
resolution of the issue. "I do not consider historians to be a
competent authority in Genocide issue," the expert said, noting that
Armenia -Turkey rapprochement should be continued in any case.

The Armenian Genocide (1915-23) was the deliberate and systematic
destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during
and just after World War I. It was characterized by massacres, and
deportations involving forced marches under conditions designed to
lead to the death of the deportees, with the total number of deaths
reaching 1.5 million.

The majority of Armenian Diaspora communities were formed by the
Genocide survivors.

EX-PREMIER OF ARMENIA: DATA ABOUT ECONOMIC GROWTH OF ARMENIA OVER ROBERT KOCHARYAN’S PRESIDENTIAL TERM ARE EXAGGERATED

Arminfo
2010-03-25 18:30:00

ArmInfo. The data about economic growth of Armenia over Robert
Kocharyan’s presidential term are exaggerated, said Hrant Bagratyan,
former prime minister of Armenia, member of Armenian National Congress,
said at today’s press-conference, commenting on Kocharyan’s recent
interview with Mediamax news agency, in which the second president
of Armenia said that over his term in office Armenia’s foreign debt
against GDP declined from 46% to 13%.

"At that time the USD/AMD exchange rate fell from 580 to 300 AMD/
1USD. Even if no measures are taken, in case of such devaluation of
US dollar, we get 23 by dividing 46 by 2",- said Bagratyan.

As regards the construction also mentioned by Kocharyan, Bagratyan said
that by its volume it did not differ so much from the early 1990s. The
only difference was that at that time houses were being built in the
disaster zone, and not elite buildings in the center of Yerevan.

"I blame Kocharyan, the Armenian government and international financial
organizations: one should not carry out elite construction worth 3
bln USD in the center of Yerevan, while the demand is lacking!" –
concluded Bagratyan.

Armenian MP Says Government Failed Crisis Prevention Programme

ARMENIAN MP SAYS GOVERNMENT FAILED CRISIS PREVENTION PROGRAMME

Mediamax, Armenia
March 23 2010

Representative of the Supreme Body of the [major opposition Armenian
Revolutionary Federation] Dashnaktsutyun party, [MP] Armen Rustamyan,
stated today that the Armenian government "failed the crisis prevention
program".

Mediamax reports that, speaking at a news conference, Armen Rustamyan
stated that "our party presented a number of proposals on coming out
of the crisis to the government; however the executive body did not
take those recommendations into consideration".

Dashnaktsutyun representative pointed to the following economic
problems: new social problems occur more frequently in the country
than the existing ones are solved; there is uncontrollable increase
of prices; absence of an anti-monopoly policy and dependence of the
economy on monopolies; concealment of the real volume of minimum of
subsistence, aiming at hiding the high level of poverty in the country.

Armen Rustamyan stated that these and other issues will be discussed
at the social-democratic party’s conference on "Social approaches to
Armenia’s challenges: global prospects, local realities", which will
take place in Yerevan on March 25-26.
