NEW CHRISTIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM
AT THE
CATHEDRAL

Explore the basic
elements of what Armenian Christians believe through a six-part program on "The
Creed ( 82/goto: acy/PDF/nicenecreed.pdf )" (Havadamk). Chanted or recited
by countless Christians every Sunday during the Soorp Badarak (Divine Liturgy), the Creed represents a concise
summary of biblical faith, formulated by the Church fathers of the first two
Ecumenical Councils–Nicaea (325 AD) and Constantinople (381 AD)–and endorsed by
all the ancient churches.

The classes will
take place at St. Illuminator’s Armenian Apostolic Cathedral, 221 E. 27th
Street, New York City, twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th
Mondays: November 23, December 14, 28, January 11, 25, February 8. The program
will begin at 7:15 pm with a presentation (about 45 minutes) followed by Q/A
and discussion (45 minutes.)

The event is
sponsored by the Prelacy’s Armenian Religious Education Council (AREC) and St.
Illuminator’s Cathedral. The sessions will be conducted by Dn. Shant Kazanjian,
AREC Director.

The program is open
to the public. Refreshments will be served. For registration and information: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

CATHOLICOS ARAM I MEETS WITH
PATRIARCHS
IGNATIUS HAZIM AND ZAKKA IN
DAMASCUS

The recent
pontifical visit of His Holiness Aram I to Syria included meetings with H.B.
Patriarch Ignatius IV (Hasim) of Antioch and all the East, and H.H. Patriarch
Mor Ignatius Zakka I (Iwas), Patriarch of Antioch and All the East.

In both instances
His Holiness and his delegation were received warmly. Patriarch Hazim and the
Catholicos discussed interchurch relations in the region and the situation of
the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC). The Patriarch hoped that the MECC
under the Presidency of Catholicos Aram I will be reorganized and
restructured so that it will serve the churches in the region in their witness
for peace.

The Catholicos met
with Patriarch Zakka I at the St. Thomas Monastery in Saidriaya, near Damascus. Patriarch Zakka
introduced the Catholicos as a strong ecumenical leader who was the moderator
of the executive and central committees of the World Council of Churches for
two terms and who continues to be a dynamic force in the meetings of the
leaders of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in the Middle
East and its standing committee. The Patriarch noted that this
cooperation has strengthened the contribution of oriental orthodox churches in
bilateral dialogues on theological, dogmatic and other issues with Christian
world communions.

CATHOLICOS ARAM MEETS WITH GRAND
MUFTI

During his visit to
Syria, His Holiness Aram I met with the Grand Mufti of the Republic at the
Ministry of Religious Affairs. They discussed concerns arising from His
Holiness’ conversation with President Bashar al-Assad. These concerns included
the presence of Armenians in Syria,
globalization and the urgency for dialogue between Christians and Muslims, different
cultures and people. They also discussed the role of His Holiness Aram I and
the Catholicosate of Cilicia in interfaith dialogue regionally and globally.

CATHOLICOS ARAM
LECTURES AT DAMASCUS
UNIVERSITY

His Holiness Aram I
went to Damascus where he was invited to lecture at Damascus University. Upon
his arrival the president of the university, government officials, faculty and
students received him. His lecture topic was "Challenges of Christian-Muslim
Dialogue Today." The lecture included current theories and practices of
dialogue, with specific reference to Christian-Muslin relations; the
monotheistic basis and the differences in theological, ethical and social
interpretations of the two religions, with reference to religion and politics,
religion and culture and faith and reason; common global issues and challenges
to which the two religions may respond together through their messages of love
and trust.

DAILY
BIBLE READINGS

Bible readings for today, Thursday,
October 29,
are: Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts 20:25-38; John 15:17-25.

"And now I know that none of
you, among whom
I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom, will ever see my face again.
Therefore I declare to you this day that I am not responsible for the blood of
any of you, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of
God. Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy
Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God
that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I have gone,
savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Some even from
your own group will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples
to follow them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not
cease night or day to warn everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God
and to the message of his grace, a message that is able to build you up and to give
you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. I coveted no one’s silver or
gold or clothing. You know for yourselves that I worked with my own hands to
support myself and my companions. In all this I have given you an example that
by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus,
for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ "

When he had finished
speaking, he knelt down
with them all and prayed. There was much weeping among them all; they embraced
Paul and kissed him, grieving especially because of what he had said, that they
would not see him again. Then they brought him to the ship. Acts 20:25-38)

ST.
JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

Today, October 29, the Armenian Church
commemorates
and remembers St. John Chrysostom (Hovhan
Voskeperan), who was a notable Christian bishop and preacher in the 4th
and 5th centuries in Syria
and Constantinople. He is famous for his
eloquence in public speaking–Chrysostom literally means "golden mouth." The
Orthodox Church honors him as a saint and one of the "three holy hierarchs" (along
with Saints Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian). He is also recognized
and honored by the Catholic Church and the Church of England.

John converted to Christianity in 368
when he was
barely 21 years old. He renounced a large family inheritance and a promising
legal career and went to live in a mountain cave where he studied the Bible. He
was later ordained a priest and soon his sermons were attracting huge
audiences. He challenged wealthy Christians, whose generosity was confined to
donating precious objects for display in churches. "The gift of a chalice may
be extravagant in its generosity," he said, "but a gift to the poor is an
expression of love." He told them they had a duty to help the poor and needy.
He wrote often about valuing the richness of nature created God which should be
enjoyed and protected. Although he was very popular with the people, his
outspoken criticism was not appreciated by the hierarchy and he was sent into
exile at various times. His sermons made a great impact on Christendom (his
Easter homily is considered to be a masterpiece). He had a profound influence
on the doctrines and theology of the Armenian Church because he spent the final
years of his exile in Armenia.
Many of his important works have survived only in Armenian manuscripts. He is
also the author of liturgical prayers used in the Armenian Church.
Muse of the deep and ineffable Divine
Mysteries,
Wise Prefect and Great Doctor of the
world,
Like the rock of the Church, you were
faithful to the key to heaven,
>From the beloved disciple, you
received the Gospel.
>From the Holy Virgin Birth-giver you
received your mark of authority,
O Patriarch John, by the grace of the
Holy Spirit you received Wisdom.

FEAST
OF ALL SAINTS, OLD AND NEW, KNOWN AND UNKNOWN

This Saturday, October 31, the Armenian
Church
commemorates the Feast of all Saints, Old and New, Known and Unknown. The
western churches celebrate All Saints Day on November 1 (the day after
Halloween). In the Armenian Church tradition the date is variable depending on
the season of the Cross. It can occur in late October or in November. The
commemoration is rooted in the belief that there are many saints who are not
known to us. Therefore, on this day all saints are honored.

Azeri MP Comments Of Armenian Leaders’ Statements

AZERI MP COMMENTS OF ARMENIAN LEADERS’ STATEMENTS

Oct 27 2009
Armenia

"I would designate all the statements made by Serzh Sargsyan and Bako
Sahakyan in Moscow as self-complacency," Hasim Mollazade, member of
the Milli Majlis of Azerbajan, told 1news.az.

"Thus they are comforting their citizens and all the Armenians –
they not only remain committed to their positions, but are also
consolidating them," Mollazade said, commenting on the Armenian
leader’s statement that the Armenian side intends to strengthen its
positions in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, the Armenian side’s
actions will eventually frustrate the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement
and the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

"Now all the responsibility for further developments rests with
Armenia. So if that country continues in the same spirit, I do not
think the processes will be success," Mollazade said.

Speaking at a fund-raising dinner at the Ararat Part Hyatt hotel
in Moscow attended by about 80 Russia-based Armenian businessmen,
RA President Serzh Sargsyan stated: "No war in our region has ever
caused damage to our fortress [Shushi]. Suffice it to say that, over
the last 200 years, Shushi has passed from hand to hand at least
fifteen times, which makes it much dearer to us."

BAKUR KARAPETYAN: ZANGEZUR IS AN OBSTACLE TO TURKEY’S PLANS

/PanARMENIAN.Net/

In a letter addressed to Russian, French and U.S. Presidents, Head of
Shushi foundation Bakur Karapetyan has focused on Karabakh-controlled
territories between Armenia and NKR. Expert believes that Azerbaijan
plans to populate the territories with families of soldiers and storm
troopers for waging a partisan war against Zangezur (Syunik region)
and Nagorno Karabakh Republic. In Turkish-speaking countries’ recent
summit held in Nakhichevan, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev declared of
his intention to occupy Zangezur.

"Turkey has plans to merge two Turkish speaking states into an
empire, and Zangezur appears the only impediment," says Karapetyan
in his letter.

Expressing belief that Turkish Azerbaijani plans pose serious threat to
the region, he calls on OSCE MG Co-Chairs to consider above-mentioned
circumstances and prevent realization of Turkish-Azerbaijani program.

TURKEY’S NATIONALIST MOVEMENT PARTY CRITICIZED RAPPROCHEMENT WITH ARMENIA

PanARMENIAN.Net
21.10.2009 14:10 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Devlet Bahceli, leader of Nationalist Movement Party
(MHP) -the second biggest opposition in the parliament- criticized the
government’s foreign policy and the recent rapprochement with Armenia.

Addressing the group meeting of his party Tuesday in the parliament,
Bahceli said the government "failed to seek Turkey’s national
interests."

He said the government’s zero problem policy was "nothing more than
subordination to foreign aspirations it failed to resist." Bahceli
said the recent protocols signed with Armenia was "the arbitrariness"
of the government and it "did not reflect the views and emotions of
the whole nation."

He urged the government not to be influenced by foreign impositions
and to avoid straining relations with a country while trying to
fix relations with another. "The Justice and Development (AK) Party
mentality which risks loosing Azerbaijan in the name of winning over
Armenia, has forced relations with this close ally to a dangerous
path," said Bahceli.

Bahceli said Turkish nation was loyal to and always stood by Azerbaijan
urging it not to hurt feelings of the entire Turkish nation for
mistakes of the AK Party administration. "In this respect we urge
Azerbaijan to respect the Turkish flag and channel "their righteous
anger" to diplomatic paths," said Bahceli, reported Anatolian News
Agency.

Azerbaijan Seeks To Derail Turkey-Armenia Deal

AZERBAIJAN SEEKS TO DERAIL TURKEY-ARMENIA DEAL
Emil Guliyev

Agence France Presse
Oct 19 2009

Azerbaijan is stepping up efforts to derail reconciliation between
ally Turkey and arch-foe Armenia after threatening to reroute gas
supplies to Europe running through Turkey.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Friday said Turkish terms for
buying Azerbaijani gas were unacceptable and that Baku is considering
other routes for shipping its gas to Europe.

The statement came amid deep Azerbaijani anger at a thaw in
Turkish-Armenian relations and prompted Turkish Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu to assure Ankara that its close support for Baku
remained unchanged.

"Azerbaijan has been selling its natural gas to Turkey at a level that
is one third of the world price. What country in the world would agree
to sell its natural resources at 30 percent of world prices?" Aliyev
told a government meeting.

"Of course under such conditions, we have to explore alternatives,"
he said, adding that Azerbaijan could look to increase gas supplies
through Russia or Iran.

Analysts said Aliyev’s remarks were a shot across Turkey’s bow after
it signed a deal with Armenia this month to establish diplomatic ties
and reopen their border following decades of hostility.

Baku is bristling that Ankara is moving forward with the deal, which
must still be ratified by the Armenian and Turkish parliaments,
and accused Turkey of betraying its interests.

Ankara sealed its border with Armenia in 1993 in a show of solidarity
with Baku after ethnic Armenian separatists, backed by Yerevan,
seized the Nagorny Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts
from Azerbaijan in a war that claimed an estimated 30,000 lives.

"Azerbaijan feels personally betrayed by Turkey to some extent," said
Ana Jelenkovic, a London-based Caucasus expert with the Eurasia Group.

"They are feeling very threatened and are taking steps to make it
overtly obvious to Turkey where they stand."

Azerbaijani political analyst Rasim Musabekov said the Turkey-Armenia
thaw has brought longstanding Azerbaijani concerns over gas prices
to the surface.

"Turkey’s ignoring of Azerbaijan’s national interests in its approach
with Armenia has made Baku reconsider Turkey’s selfish approach to
gas prices," he said.

"Where previously Azerbaijan could justify the very low prices because
of brotherly relations with Turkey, now Baku is speaking solely in
the language of business," he said.

In response, Davutoglu declared that "Azeri soil is as sacred for
us as our own" and Turkey would offer unstinting support for Baku in
the Karabakh conflict.

Commenting on Aliyev’s remarks on gas, Davutoglu added: "The
negotiations are continuing… I believe we will reach a positive
outcome."

Azerbaijan is the starting point for a key corridor of oil and gas
pipelines from the Caspian Sea through Georgia and Turkey to Europe.

It is also seen as a key potential supplier for the European Union’s
ambitious Nabucco pipeline project, aimed at cutting Europe’s reliance
on gas supplies through Russia and Ukraine.

Jelenkovic said the threat to pursue alternative routes is also
aimed at Western countries, which have pushed hard for reconciliation
between Armenia and Turkey.

"They are making it very clear to Europe what this might mean,
because Europe would certainly prefer not to have those supplies
routed through Russia," she said.

Tentative steps have already been taken with Moscow and last week
the Azerbaijani and Russian state energy firms signed a deal to start
gas flowing to Russia as of next year.

Azerbaijan is limited in how far it can push Turkey, as there is not
enough infrastructure for major gas supplies through other countries
such as Russia But emotions in Baku are running high.

"We can say that we are now at the lowest point in relations between
Turkey and Azerbaijan," said Baku-based analyst Ilgar Mamedov.

The petition against the Madrid Principles and the signed
Armenian-Turkish Protocols by Miatsum National Initiative has already
gathered 10,000 signatures. The initiative against the Protocols and
the Madrid Principles, which provide an outline for the settlement
of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, gathered 10,000 signatures in acts
of protest in various Yerevan communities which spanned a mere 10 days.

Miatsum National Initiative member and filmmaker Tigran Khzmalyan spoke
about this issue at a press conference today. For comparative purposes,
he spoke about the petition circulated by the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation (Dashnaktsutyun, or ARF-D), noting that they have more
resources and attributed more time toward collecting signatures, though
"it’s odd that at their one location [in Republic Square in central
Yerevan], they succeeeded in collecting 1,000 signatures a day."

How Grape Is Bought

HOW GRAPE IS BOUGHT

15595.html
14:20:46 – 19/10/2009

This year, everyone’s attention was focused on the grape and the
question on its sale. The point is that some wine and brandy factories
announced just from the beginning that they were not going to buy
grape because they are not able to sell their product. But this is
not the whole problem. As a rule, the factories stipulate contracts
with farmers with which the farmer is obliged to sell a certain amount
of harvest at a certain price that is set by the contract. This year,
they did not stipulate contracts with many farmers. During the harvest,
they bought grape at a very low price from those with whom they did
not have contracts proceeding from the point that the villager does
not have other choice.

After the farmers started protesting closing the Ararat highway, Serge
Sargsyan visited the factories and asked them to buy the harvest in
addition at a price for the farmers to have profit, in other words
at least at 100 dram. After this, some move was made but the protest
continued. The reason was that the factories established the price-
130 dram but paid only 90. Villagers said those responsible for grape
gave the regular numbers at 20, 000 dram. They also said that there
were cases when for example after the number 20, it was not the turn
of the 21 but 20a, 20b etc.

P.S. One of the farmers is the father of the soldier Tigran Abgaryan
who died on March 1. He also faced the same problems as the others.

Interestingly, what does the feudal government think about this and
other questions like this one?

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Neo-Conservative activists of Vanadzor
regional committee were actually arrested for distributing leaflets
expressing their concerns over RA-Turkish Protocols, Head of National
Neoconservative Movement (NNM) Edward Abrhamyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net
reporter. Arresting youth wing activist Levon Yelchinyan and NNM
regional committee chair Manvel Kostandyan, law enforces acted in
breach of several constitutional clauses, he finds. "Police operations
in Vanadzor can be characterized as indecent and unfounded conduct.

Attempts to seed hostility between Turks and Armenians is a
disgraceful conduct by Armenian law enforcers. On October 19, our
organization addressed an open letter to RA Prosecutor General. We
hope Mr. Hovsepyan will not leave our letter unanswered."

In the evening of October 17, Vanadzor Police arrested Head of NNM
Regional Committee Chair Manvel Kostandyan and Head of Student Union
Levon Yelchinyan. At the moment of arrest, young activists possessed
leaflets condemning the Protocols signed between Armenian and Turkish
Foreign Ministers. Activists were taken to police station, and all
their personal items, including passports, office keys and mobiles
were confiscated. They spent over 6 hours in police. Law enforcers
have thus violated articles 18, 21, 25, 27 and 53 of RA Constitution.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "We still believe in promises of the Turkish
authorities not to open borders until the solution of the Karabakh
problem. But the general atmosphere prevailing around agreements
signed between Armenia and Turkey prompt us to doubt these statements,
" the deputy of the Milli Mejlis Asim Mollazade said.

According to him, signing of the agreements between Armenia and Turkey
has resulted in the situation when Armenia changed its position. "As
for Azerbaijan, we have always advocated for peace and tranquility in
our region and we are always concerned to settle the conflict quickly,
and if any country, member of the OSCE Minsk Group, is ready to make
efforts, we would only welcome it," he said.

According to Mollazade, the future relations with Turkey will
remain strategic, however they need to be deprived of the emotional
component and more pragmatic policies should be to adopted. "By the
way, pragmatism should be in our relations with Russia and the United
States, and with all countries. In this regard, we must intensify our
diplomacy in different directions to become more active, " he said,
