/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkish media report that ahead of signing Armenian
Turkish Protocols in Zurich, RA FM Edward Nalbandyan wished to
introduce his amendments concerning Armenian Genocide, to which
Turkish side disagreed. Turkish journalists say that postponement was
caused by such factors as Armenian Genocide, Karabakh conflict and
inaccurate wording, a PanARMENIAN.Net correspondent reports from
Zurich.

Other sources report that Turkish side wanted to introduce in
documents a clause on Nagorno Karabakh conflict. However, Armenia side
announced that the problem bore no relationship to Armenian-Turkish
rapprochement.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ `RA-Turkey Protocols’ signing brought discord into
Armenia-Diaspora relations,’ Chairman of the Board of Union of
Armenian Associations in Sweden, Vahagn Avedian told PanARMENIAN.Net
reporter. According to him, the first step Diaspora will undertake
after Protocols’ conclusion would be cessation of financing to
Armenia.

Avedian noted that postponement of protocols singing gave Diaspora
reason to hope Armenia has altered its position and will refrain from
choosing this way of reaching RA-Turkey rapprochement. `Protocols are
yet awaiting parliamentary ratification, which, I’m sure, does not
promise any favorable development of events for Armenia,’ Vahagn
Avedian stressed.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ I do not think that the reactions coming from
Turkey, Armenia and even Armenian Diaspora produce negative impact
Protocol signing, TURKSAM Director Sinan Ogan told a PanARMENIAN.Net
reporter. "President Sargsyan is subject to visit Turkey after the
protocol that will be arguably signed on 10-11 October. There is
not any problem about the match and Protocol signing, however I do
not expect that documents will be approved soon. Although they may
receive Armenian parliament’s approval, Turkish parliament will be
looking forward to a progress over Nagorno-Karabakh issue," Turkish

Turkish PM Ready For Deal On Relations With Armenia – Paper

TURKISH PM READY FOR DEAL ON RELATIONS WITH ARMENIA – PAPER

RIA Novosti

NEW YORK, October 7 (RIA Novosti) – Turkey is ready to sign a pact on
October 10 on reopening its border with Armenia and reestablishing
relations, if Armenia does not insist on last-minute changes to the
draft, the Turkish prime minister told The Wall Street Journal.

Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in a show of support
for Muslim ally Azerbaijan, following a bloody conflict over Nagorny
Karabakh between the two ex-Soviet republics. Turkey has also demanded
that Yerevan drop its campaign to have the mass killings of Armenians
by Ottoman Turks in 1915 internationally recognized as genocide.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the paper: "Our foreign minister is going
to sign this agreement with the Armenian foreign minister [Edward]
Nalbandian on Oct. 10."

Armenia and Turkey agreed to a "roadmap" to normalize their relations
under Swiss mediation this April. The draft pact between the countries
has been backed by the United States and European Union.

The premier said "positive steps" have been made since the start of
the negotiations, with flights between Yerevan and Istanbul resumed
and some 40,000 Armenians, illegally living in Turkey, allowed to
remain in the country.

Erdogan also said he would like witnesses from the Minsk group,
which oversees peace talks on Nagorny Karabakh, to see the signing
of the agreement.

Nagorny Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan with a largely Armenian
population, has been a source of conflict between the former Soviet
republics since the late 1980s. The province has its own government
and is de facto independent.

During his recent international visit, Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan met with representatives of Armenian diasporas in different
countries, and many of them expressed their opposition to the signing
of a Turkish-Armenian agreement.

"As far as we’re concerned there is no problem. But it is up to the
government in Armenia," Erdogan told the paper.

Important Politics

A heated debate between Armenian Republican Party member Karen Avagyan
and Heritage Party representative Stepan Safaryan, regarding President
Sargsyan’s tour of the diaspora took place today.

Mr. Avagyan stated that most of the protests that President Sargsyan
has so far encountered on his trip haven’t been sincere given that many
of the participants aren’t even informed about the facts contained
in the Armenian-Turkish protocols. "They have received distorted
information and believe rumors of treason, etc. How can people carry
out protests when they aren’t informed of the facts?"

In response, Mr. Safaryan said it was incorrect to claim that the
protestors are misinformed since the first powerful wave of protest
to the protocols came from the diaspora immediately on September 1
and that the protests are continuing.

"What I find most disturbing in the meetings that President Sargsyan
has had on his tour is the fact that the Armenian authorities continue
to assert that despite the protests the document will be signed. No
one has the right to say that these protest actions are purely based
on emotion," Mr Safaryan stated.

Mr. Avagyan responded by saying that given the internal problems now
confronting the Heritage Party, none of its members had the moral
right to make such bold assertions.

When asked by a reporter if the same approach applies to the Republican
Party given the fact that former parliament speaker Tigran Torosyan
has quit the party, Mr. Avagyan answered, "Nonetheless, no one from
our party has played with his parliamentary seat like the leader
of Heritage. It just isn’t right for people to go around passing
judgement on major issues without resolving their internal problems."

"You resolved the internal problems of Armenia on March 1 and now
you’ve gone on to tackle mega projects? Even though it might appear
that our party is split, looks can be deceiving. You know full well
about how and why this commotion has been raised," argued Mr. Safaryan,
adding that no one can charge the descendants of Genocide survivors
of responding emotionally to this issue.

The Heritage Party member went on to say that the fact that these
diaspora discussions aren’t being fully broadcast here in Armenia just
goes to show that President Sargsyan has met with serious opposition
above and beyond organized demonstrations.

He mentioned the fact that President Sargsyan, during his speech
yesterday, told diaspora representatives that, "You’ve brought us
two jars of preserves and no you want to make demands?" Mr. Safaryan
warned that we have now entered a period of mutual recrimination and
insult which could possibly threaten Armenia-diaspora relations.

Mr. Avagyan, citing the words of Nzhdeh, stated that those who try to
make political gain from the Genocide are the "dregs of the nation". He
failed to name names however.
