/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A Turkish teenager was sent to jail on Wednesday
after his first appearance in court over the murder of Turkish Armenian
editor Hrant Dink, whose funeral on Tuesday drew 100,000 people onto
the streets of Istanbul. He was later ordered to be held in Bayrampasa
prison while the prosecution prepares charges against him. Samast
said in a four-page statement to police that he had carried Dink’s
photograph for several months and had practised shooting for several
days before travelling to Istanbul. He said he had also received money
for the killing. Murder carries a life sentence in Turkey, but as a
minor Samast would face a sentence of some 18-24 years if found guilty.

Turkish newspapers said police had detained a student in Trabzon on
suspicion of involvement in the killing and published a photograph
of him with the leaders of an ultranationalist political party amid
media speculation about nationalist links to the plot.

Jonathan Henick: The U.S does not recognize 1915 events as genocide

[ 18 Jan. 2007 14:18 ]

The discussions of False `Armenian genocide’ in the U.S Congress will
not cause any serious changes concerning the issue, US Embassy Public
Relations Department chief Jonathan Henick told the APA. He said that
the U.S’s position on this issue has not changed.

`The U.S has never recognized 1915 events as tragedy and does not
recognize now.
It should be mentioned that the U.S president solves the main issues
concerning foreign policy of the country himself. The regulation of
trade relations with foreign countries is under the competence of the
Congress. Though the House of Representatives recognizes false
Armenian genocide, this document should be signed by the senator.
According to the legislation of the U.S, the U.S president does not
have right to put veto on draft law.
It should be mentioned that, the members of Armenian Support Group in
the U.S Congress Adam Schiff, Franck Pallone, George Radanovich and
Joe Knollenberg worked out draft law on recognition of 1915 events as
Armenian genocide. The draft will be put in discussions by the
signature of 150 congressmen. The preliminary hearings of the draft
will be held this week in the House of Representatives. Armenian
lobby persist in approving the draft law until April 24. /APA/

ANKARA: Turkish historian: map published by Armenians refutes Genoc.

Turkish historian says map published by Armenians refutes genocide
claims

ADANA (A.A) -17.01.2007 -Turkish researcher-historian Cezmi Yurtsever
said a map in Ottoman archives, published by Armenians, refutes
so-called Armenian genocide.

Yurtsever gave brief information at a conference in Adana, based on
his studies on Ottoman archives, regarding "Turkish-Armenian
historical relations".

According to Yurtsever’s researches, a map, drawn up and published by
Armenian Mekhitarist Monastry in San Lazzaro Island of Italy, shows
that Armenian population in Ottoman Empire between years 1832 and
1896 was a total of 1.2 million.

Yurtsever noted that advocates of so-called genocide claim Armenian
population before World War I was 2.5 million and 1.5 million of them
died after emigration.

"This map existing in Ottoman archives, which was published by
Armenians, screams refuting genocide lies," he said.

Turkish historian also indicated that an "immigration and population
map and report" in archives states the prevailing conditions of 1916.
"These documents say that Turkish people in eastern cities Erzurum,
Trabzon, Mus, Bitlis, Van, Elazig and Erzincan were forced to mass
migration. It proves the fact that 700,000 Turkish people emigrated
in this period," he added.

Serge Sargsyan: Azerbaijan understood it will achieve nothing via militant
rhetoric

The militant statements of Azerbaijan have reduced connected with the
negotiation process of the conflict settlement, RA Defense Minister
Serge Sargsyan said in a press conference today, noting that
Azerbaijan has finally understood that respected international
structures and he countries engaged in the resolution of the issue
condemn the settlement via militant rhetoric. The Minister reconfirmed
that the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs have been entrusted to address the
issue and promote the peace talks.

As for the statements of Azerbaijan that Armenia violates the
proportionality of armaments, Serge Sargsyan noted that it is `the
problem of Azerbaijan.’ He said Armenia should equip the army with
modern armaments, without which there can be no modern army.

Azerbaijan intends to appoint a Turkish General to the position of the
Deputy Defense Minister. What is the reaction of Armenia to the
question? Serge Sargsyan answered that it’s not advisable to appoint
representative of a country ‘s army to a leading position in the Armed
Forces of another state. However, since 1992-1993 Turkish commanders
have been serving in the Azerbaijani army. It’s not a question of
particular concern for Armenia. The Turkish army is rather organized,
the General can help the Azeri army. Nevertheless, 1-2 officials will
not be able to raise the military effectiveness of the army, `it
should come in the result of long work.’
