Kemal Ataturk Admits Reality
of the Armenian Genocide
in a 1926 Interview

In June 1926 a group of disgruntled Turks, headed by a certain Ziya
Hurshid, planned to assassinate the “father of the Turkish Republic,”
Mustapha Kemal. In mid_June, Kemal was scheduled to visit Izmir after
an extended tour of the country. The plotters secretly assembled in
that city and finalized their plan to the minutest detail. The plot
was given away by one of the conspirators, and almost all of them were
arrested, tried and punished. Kemal arrived in Izmir and personally
took charge of the arrests. He himself interrogated a few of the
prisoners, who were his former friends. The infamous Independence
Tribunal was summoned from Ankara, and at the conclusion of the mock
trial, fifteen conspirators were sentenced to death. Those who
belonged to the former Union and Progress (Ittihad ve Terakki) Party
of the Young Turks, were later tried in Ankara, found guilty and
executed.

In July of the same year, a Swiss journalist, Emile Hilderbrand,
interviewed Kemal, who openly blamed the Young Turks for the massacre
of “millions of our Christian subjects.” The interview originally
appeared in the August 1, 1926 issue of the Los Angeles Examiner. This
newspaper interview is an important document, since, in the ninth
paragraph, Kemal Ataturk admits the reality of the Armenian Genocide.

The text below is corrected and reprinted from the Armenian
Mirror-Spectator, March 16, 1985.

Kemal Promises More Hangings of Political Antagonists in Turkey

I shall not stop until every guilty person, no matter how high his
rank, has been hung from the gallows as a grim warning to all
incipient plotters against the security of the Turkish Republic. Since
the very hour of its reincarnation in the rejuvenated body of the
Republic, our nation has endured travails no other nation has ever
experienced.

When we were fighting external enemies, or enemies whom we were
certain were sympathetic with foreign intriguers, nearly all of the
rank and file of our population were enthusiastically, even
fanatically, united to deliver the nation from the multiple foreign
yokes. But no sooner had the nation proved its worth to its foreign
detractors than certain elements, bred in the old school of political
intrigue, began to show their claws. We were face to face with a
menace to the life of the republic from two elements.

One was the group who combined religious fanaticism and ignorance with
political imbecility and who, in the past, under different Sultans had
come to believe that the state was an organism to be exploited through
debauchery, corruption and brazen bribery for personal ends. I put the
ax in the dual root of this sinister and reprehensible theory of
government by destroying the Khalif and the Sultan. I sent into exile
the persons in whom this theory was personified. Large numbers,
adherents of this school of politics, attempted to interpret any act
as atheistic, and, under the aegis of religion, began to intrigue
against the life of the republic.

Sixty Leaders Hang at Dawn

In several instances in the past when, in Kurdistan and other interior
regions of Anatolia, they showed a disposition to challenge the will
of the republic, I crushed them with an iron hand, and for example,
had over sixty of their leaders hanged at dawn.

That element had its lesson and will not again attempt to measure
swords with ‘me.

The second element, I am now about to deal with ruthlessly, is the
group of men who in the pre_republic days were known in the world as
the Committee of the Union of the Young Turks. The ranks of this
element were recruited from a questionable assortment of political
adventurers, half_educated progressives and men of dissolute habits.
In the days when we were battling against foes from within and
without, this element joined us and fought in our ranks. Yet from the
early days I had misgivings as to their motives. But I wished, hoped
and then prayed that once our country was redeemed from the foreign
yoke, this element would mend its methods and become infused with the
seal of patriotism. I soon began to realize that my hopes were doomed
to be disillusioned and my prayers were [not] to be answered. I
patiently waited, keeping a sharp eye on their movements.

Seditious Movements Cloaked

They formed themselves into a political opposition. I do not pretend
to be a dictator, bent to suppress sincere and honest political
opposition, because a republic is a misnomer when it ceases to brook
criticism. But when a group of dissolute, corrupt and unscrupulous
political adventurers begin to organize seditious movements under the
cloak of political opposition, it becomes the sacred duty of those who
are in charge of the machinery of the government to suppress it and
suppress it with an exemplary ruthlessness that will prevent the
eventual shedding of rivers of blood.

I am about to show these plotters that the Republic of Turkey cannot
be overthrown by murderers or through their murderous designs…

These left_overs from the former Young Turk Party, who should have
been made to account for the lives of millions of our Christian
subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse, from their homes and
massacred, have been restive under the republican rule. They have
hitherto lived on plunder, robbery and bribery and become inimical to
any idea, or suggestion to enlist in useful labor and earn their
living by the honest sweat of their brow.

Under the cloak of the opposition party, this element, who forced our
country into the Great
War against the will of the people, who caused the shedding of rivers
of blood of the Turkish
youth to satisfy the criminal ambition of Enver Pasha, has, in a
cowardly fashion, intrigued against my life, as well as the lives of
the members of my cabinet.

I would have more respect for them had they planned an armed
revolution, taking the field in a manly fashion, to overthrow my
government. But being conscious of the fact that they could
not muster out even one regiment to give battle to the zealous
adherents to, and upholders of, the glorious republic, they have
resorted to beastial methods of assassination. They have hired
murderers and even debauched women to commit their murderous acts.

In the middle of June last I had planned to make a tour of the
country. My itinerary was published. A group of these assassins,
placed on the route of procession, were to “rain” hand grenades at the
automobiles which were to carry me and my staff.

They went even further and seduced a woman who had been for years
identified with my cause and who had been my loyal political friend
and on occasion, even adviser. They induced this woman to accept the
reprehensible assignment to present me with a bouquet which concealed
a bomb that would, on my receiving it, explode and obliterate everyone
in sight. This ill_advised woman deserves pity, for she was made to
believe that she would thus sacrifice her own life for the good of the
fatherland. I was the enemy of the nation. She will be forgiven for
her part in the plot, for she conscience_stricken, confessed to the
proper authorities in time for me to cancel my intended tour.

Prior To Admission To EU Turkey Must Open Its Borders With Armenia A

PRIOR TO ADMISSION TO EU TURKEY MUST OPEN ITS BORDERS WITH ARMENIA AND RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE OF 1915

ARKA News Agency, Armenia
April 19 2006

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/. Prior to the admission to the EU Turkey
must open its borders with Armenia and recognize the Armenian genocide
of 1915, Chairman of the commission for the EU-Armenia parliamentary
cooperation Marie-Anne-Isler-Beguin told a press conference in Yerevan.

“I cannot imagine that the EU will admit a country having closed
borders with a neighbor country, and denying the crime committed
before,” she said.

According to her, the issue of opening the borders by Turkey and
recognition of the Armenian genocide was long discussed in the EU.

And now, a relevant resolution, imposing this requirement on Turkey
as a candidate for the admission to the EU, has been approved.

“We work on these issues every day, and our stand has not changed
over this time. Turkey must recognize the Armenian genocide,” she said.

The Armenian genocide of 1915-1923 is considered the first genocide
of the 20th century that was organized and systematically executed by
the Young Turkish government. Over 1.5mln of Armenians were massacred
in various regions of Western Armenia, which was part of the Ottoman
Empire in 1915.

The fact of this genocide was recognized by many countries. Among
them are Uruguay, Russia, France, Argentine, Greece, the lower house
of Italy’s parliament, parliaments of Greece, Cyprus, Belgium, Wales,
the National Council of Switzerland, the House of Commons of Canada’s
parliament and Poland’s Seym.

HUNGER STRIKES IN THE ISOLATION CELL AND OPPOSITE THE PRESIDENT’S
RESIDENCE

[09:09 pm] 14 April, 2006

Razmik Sargsyan, Musa Serobyan and Arayik Zaryan who are charged with
the murder of the Hovsep Mkrtoumyan and Roma Eghiazaryan, soldiers of
the Mataghis military detachment, continue their three-day hunger
strike in the Noubarashen criminal-executive institution.

According to the advocates, Razmik Sargsyan has sewn up his mouth so
that they will not feed him by force. And the mothers of the boys,
Hripsime Galajyan, Liana Zalyan, Julieta Sargsyan and Marine Serobyan
are continuing their two-day hunger strike opposite the President’s
residence. «The trial in the Court of Appeal is being held with
numerous illegal actions and violations of the criminal lawsuit. Our
children suffer the contempt of the judge and the prosecutor», the
letter to Robert Kocharyan says.

The advocates of the soldiers rendered a press conference today to
inform about the illegal course of the trial. According to advocate
Zarouhi Postanjyan, «On April 12 the court announced about the end of
the trial investigating only the testimony of three witnesses two of
which did not come to court. Only one of them gave testimony in court,
but later on he denied his own words announcing that he was not forced
to do anything but he is a coward and gave testimony for fear».

According to the advocates, the court refused their mediations. If
they took them into account, according to the advocates, they would
secure the multi-sided and unbiased investigation of the case. `In
particular, the court took no notice of the floppy disk which includes
the interpretation of the talks by cell phone of the commanders of the
military detachment during the years 2003 and 2004. This diskette
would clarify the relation of the commanders to the murder. The
rejection was accounted for by the pretext that the diskette cannot be
opened. Besides, the court was not interested in the fact how the
results of the forensic examination changed during the course of the
trial. First they said that the body found was killed two days ago,
and then they claimed it was killed 14 days ago,’ the advocates say.

By the way, according to the advocates, during the trial when Razmik
Sargsyan said he was beaten not only by the Prosecution inspectors but
also by Gagik Jhangiryan, representative of the prosecution Anahit
Yeghiazaryan said, `It’s an honor for you.’

Attempt in Armenia To Use Methods of Traditional Indian Medicine

ATTEMPT IS MADE IN ARMENIA TO USE METHODS OF TRADITIONAL INDIAN MEDICINE

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, NOYAN TAPAN. Phytotherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture,
as well as use of bees and leeches in treatment of various diseases
are especially widespread in Armenia among methods of alternative and
traditional medicine. As Mkrtich Avagian, the Chief of the
Traditional and Alternative Medicine Department of the National Health
Care Institute mentioned in the interview to the Noyan Tapan
correspondent, traditional Indian medicine is insufficiently developed
in the republic. According to M.Avagian, at present the department is
doing work for developing this direction of the medicine in the
country.

Particularly, they are cooperating with the Embassy of India to the
RA, for organizing training of Armenian specialists in
India. According to M.Avagian, Armenia is among those countries where
traditional medicine is officially accepted and used along with modern
medicine. It was also mentioned that doctors’ interest in use of
alternative and traditional medicine is increasing each
year. According to M.Avagian, “a choice of combination of the best
methods of traditional and modern medicine” is made at the “AltMed”
alternative and traditional medical center founded on the basis of the
department in 2000. New developments in reflex therapy, manual
therapy, phytotherapy and homeopathy are used in the center.

[Presenter] Azerbaijan is capable of defending its national interests
and liberating its territory. This is our sovereign right. If the peace
talks yield no results, we shall resort to other means, President Ilham
Aliyev has said in Saki. ANS TV’s Saki bureau special correspondent
Xatira Akparova has the details.

[Correspondent] Today the president attended the opening of
a park-museum named after Heydar Aliyev. After the ceremony the
president made a speech.

[Passage omitted: correspondent quotes Aliyev as commenting on claims
of destruction of Armenian monuments in Naxcivan]

[President Ilham Aliyev, captioned] As you know some circles in
Armenia, the Armenian lobby, and some hypocritical politicians who
are under their thumb, have recently alleged that Armenian tomb stones
in Naxcivan are being destroyed.

This is an absolute lie, slanderous information, a fairytale. All
historic monuments are being preserved in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is
noted for its tolerance. Representatives of all ethnic groups and
religions live here as one family. Yesterday I visited the Georgian
church in Qax.

[Correspondent] The president noted that the main aim of his
visits is to check whether his instructions regarding the economic
development of the regions are being implemented by the local executive
authorities. In his speech, the president also noted that a thermal
power plant with a capacity of 87 MWh, which is under construction,
will be commissioned in Saki. It will provide Saki and the region
with electricity.

[Passage omitted: sightseeing in Saki, the visit continues].

ANKARA: Charges Against Four Journalists Dropped

CHARGES AGAINST FOUR JOURNALISTS DROPPED

Hurriyet, Turkey
April 12 2006

Four prominent Turkish journalists were let off charges of insulting
Turkey’s courts yesterday, a fifth, however remained on trial. The five
were indicted in December after they criticized a court’s decision
to block a conference in Istanbul that was to discuss the so-called
Armenian genocide. The prosecution charged the five journalists
under articles that penalize insults to the judiciary and attempts
to influence the justice, such charges can carry a prison sentence
of up to 10 years.

The journalists accused were Hasan Cemal, Ýsmet Berkan, Haluk Þahin and
Erol Katircioglu. The charges were dropped on grounds that prosecutors
had not filed charges within the required two-month period following
the publication of the articles.

The trial of Murat Belge a columnist for the liberal Radikal newspaper
will continue.

Like Sahin, Katircioglu and Belge are also columnists for Radikal,
while Berkan is also the newspaper’s editor-in-chief. Cemal is a
senior editorialist for the mass-selling Milliyet.
