"The last meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents over the
settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict was very constructive and in
the course of partnership", said Edward Nalbandian, foreign minister
of Armenia, APA reports.

"It was very hopeful and quite positive meeting. After the meeting,
the presidents urged the foreign ministers to continue the negotiations
just on the basis of Madrid proposals". The Armenian foreign minister
said multiple issues were discussed at the meeting and the presidents
discussed a number of issues tete-a-tete. "Of course, we will solve all
issues with Azerbaijanis and we are ready to go into trade too. Today
we are talking about the serious negotiations and Armenia is ready
to continue the talks on the basis of proposals OSCE Minsk Group
Co-Chairs made in Madrid". Edward Nalbandian said the OSCE Minsk
Group Co-Chairs would visit the region in the last week of June.

Is Zharangutiun Prepared To Compromise With Government?

IS ZHARANGUTIUN PREPARED TO COMPROMISE WITH GOVERNMENT?

A1+
11 June, 2008

These days Armenia’s Parliament is discussing the draft bill on setting
up an ad hoc committee to investigate the March 1events. According
to the bill, the committee will feature two parliamentarians from
each faction and one non-partisan parliamentarian. The "Zharangutiun"
Party, the only opposition faction in the parliament, objects to the
proposed format of the committee. The party is going to present its
objections and proposals to the National Assembly today.

"The ad hoc committee aims to investigate a highly important issue
therefore it should enjoy public confidence," said "Zharangutiun"
MP Vardan Khachatrian today. In this connection, the party proposes
that the representative of the Popular Movement should have voting
rights rather than be an associate member.

Vardan Khachatrian says even though the Regulations of the National
Assembly do not allow inclusion of a non-parliamentarian in a
parliament committee, an exception should be made because revelation
of the March 1 events and disclosure of wrongdoers are highly important
for our society. The Zharangutiun MP says the country will not develop
unless the truth about the events is revealed, and the wrongdoers
are punished.

The party proposes another option of compromise. If the staff of the
committee does not change, the "Zharangutiun" proposes invitation
of experts to observe parity. "In other words, we suggest that the
group of experts have two equal parts-one invited by the government,
the other by the opposition. We are rather interested in revealing
the objective reality than making an impression on the society,"
Vardan Khachatrian says.

The party’s final decision on the committee will depend on the
acceptance of its proposals and objections. Vardan Khachatrian
says if they see that the committee aims to cover up the crime, the
"Zharangutiun" will make a political statement and leave the committee.

Film Catches Life: Moviemaker Says ‘My Big Armenian Family’ Is About

FILM CATCHES LIFE MOVIEMAKER SAYS ‘MY BIG FAT ARMENIAN FAMILY’ IS ABOUT HIS
By Joyce Rudolph

Glendale News Press, CA
June 11 2008

Culture, Generation.

Glendale resident Sevak Ohanian recreates the problems of growing up
in an Armenian American family in his new film "My Big Fat Armenian
Family" but adds a twist of humor.

The film, which will premiere July 12 and 18 at Glendale High School,
tells the story of a family of four — a father, mother, son and
daughter. The son can’t seem to do anything right in his father’s eyes,
and there is a constant air of friction between them.

The parents, Robert and Rima, are played by one man, Ajmin Baghramian,
Ohanian said.

"I decided to have Ajmin play both characters because he is just
a phenomenal actor and good at performing caricatures of Armenian
people," the 21-year-old filmmaker said. "Having a male actor
masquerading as a female is innately funny. It goes back to the Greek
comedies where men played females."

The scenario, Ohanian said, also posed a challenge for him as the
film’s writer, director, cameraman and editor.

"I wanted .â~@~B.â~@~B.â~@~Bto see if I could achieve this effect of
two different characters being played by the same actor," he said. "And
I think, if you watch the movie, you will come to identify each of
them as their own person."

Ohanian is studying film at UC San Diego and received some feedback
from his independent study teacher, Michael Trigilio, a lecturer at
the university.

While there are some amateur qualities to the project because of
time constraints to work on the film, Ohanian has done remarkably
well with such a complex production, Trigilio said.

"It’s very complicated to have one actor playing the male and female
leads," he said. "In the editing of the scenes with the two characters,
Ohanian was able to make the editing look seamless."

But what most impressed Trigilio was how well Ohanian crafted the
story so it wasn’t just about a farcical family, he said.

"There is an emotional touchstone in the family dynamics and the way
it deals with the first- and second-generation immigrant families,"
Trigilio said. "I’m Italian American, and in our own culture there
are generational conflicts. It’s interesting to see how Sevak exposes
a lot of the jokes that are part the Armenian community but without
belittling the Armenian community."

For this project, Ohanian said he wanted to combine comedy and drama
while instilling a message in the film. What evolved was a social
commentary on how Armenian American families behave, he said.

"We reflect how parents act with their children and how children view
their parents," he said.

While it’s not autobiographical, Ohanian asked his sister, Ramela
Ohanian, 18, to play the sister in the film, he said.

"My sister is playing herself, not literally, because it’s not
autobiographical," he said. "It’s just about my culture and my
generation."

Ramela Ohanian has no plans for an acting a career, but said
participating was fun.

And she is proud of her brother’s project, having written the script,
shot, directed and edited it, she said.

"Who can say their brother has done all that," she said. "It’s
something to look up to."

Sevak Ohanian will enter a three-year program at USC School of Cinema
in August and try to make filmmaking a career, he said. But for now
he’s looking forward to the public premiere in July, he said.

"I think afterward I’ll sleep for a week," he said.

"This movie is the most challenging but rewarding thing I’ve ever
committed to."

are three actors featured in the film (left to right) Arabo Sarkisian,
portraying Arabo Armenian, Ajmin Baghramian, portraying Rima Armenian,
and Narbeh Yermian, portraying Narbeh Armenian. Arabo is a cousin
who his aunt, Rima, loves and admires while Narbeh is her son which
she cares little about. (Alex Collins/ News-Press)

On June 12-14 the Second "Asia Society" international business
forum will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan. The conference will

and representatives of the business world. The first "Asia

presents advantages as well as challenges to establishing long-term
economic prosperity and stability in the region. This conference

Kazakhstan’s development and to identify future priorities and
strategies. Kazakhstan has a pivotal role to play in fostering and
strengthening partnerships with its neighboring countries and the
broader pan-Asian community. As Central Asia becomes increasingly
important, Kazakhstan is poised to become a strategic destination
for investment and a bridge for trade between Asia and the West.

The games of the "Chess Giants" rapid chess tournament scheduled for
today and tomorrow will not take place because of the untimely death of
Grand Master Karen Asryan. The tournament will restart on June 12.

The Open Rapid Chess Tournament scheduled for June 12-15 in Yerevan has been
canceled.

Olympic champion, triple champion of Armenia, winner of many international
tournaments Karen Asryan, 28, died on June 9.

Championship in 1999, 2007 and 2008, and the tournaments of Dubai 2001 and

as a member of Armenian team, playing on board three.

Asryan had a solid playing style, refusing to take much risk on board.
