U.S. cancels jihad conference

U.S. cancels jihad conference
31.05.2009 14:18 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A Nashville hotel is citing safety concerns for
turning away a conference booked for this weekend that featured a
controversial Dutch politician and filmmaker who has criticized Islam
in Europe.
A group called New English Review signed a contract in January to use
the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel for a two-day conference called
"Understanding the Jihad in Israel, Europe and America."
Dutch politician Geert Wilders, whose 15-minute film, "Fitna," has
been called insulting to Muslims, was to be the keynote speaker. The
film challenges radical Islam and got Wilders banned from entering
Britain.
The hotel’s managing director, Tom Negri, told The Tennessean
newspaper that it canceled the event for the safety and health of
guests and employees, but he would not provide details about those
concerns.
Rebecca Bynum, listed on the New English Review’s Web site as
publisher and a senior editor, said the hotel stated no actual threat
was made against Loews for hosting the symposium.
"We find it interesting that even without a specific threat that the
fear of violence is so great that they would decide to cancel our
event," Bynum said.
The group’s Web site had a statement that said, "Loews Vanderbilt
Plaza Hotel succumbed to intimidation and canceled hosting our event."
Bynum said Loews knew the topic of the event and had talked with the
group about the possibility of having security, though she and other
members were not worried.
The New English Review’s Web site lists a Nashville mailing address,
but it does not include a description of the group’s purpose or
mission.
Bynum said the organization seeks "to raise awareness about the nature
of the jihad and all its various instruments, which do not all
necessarily involve violence." She declined to elaborate.
The symposium started Friday as scheduled, but at a venue revealed
only to people registered to attend, AP reported

LEADER OF ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS: SARGSYAN-ALIYEV MEETING IN ST.PETERSBURG MAY OPEN A NEW PAGE IN KARABAKH SETTLEMENT

ArmInfo. Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting in St.Petersburg may open a new,
undesirable for Armenia page in the Karabakh settlement, the leader
of Armenian National Congress Levon Ter-Petrosyan said at the rally
dedicated to ending of the electoral campaign on Yerevan mayor
election.

‘The probability that over the meeting pressure will be imposed upon
the parties to the talks and they will be simply forced to peace,
is quite big.

Statement of Russian ex-co-chair of the OSCE MG Vladimir Kazimirov
is evidence of this’, – he said.

According to Ter-Petrosyan, in case of Karabakh, it will be restricted
to application of the Dayton model of settlement, which was used with
respect to Bosnian Serbs. He pointed out that despite his resignation,
Kazimirov remains one of the designers of the Kremlin policy, and in
this context his statements are not accidental.

"If Moscow and Washington come to agreement, the Dayton model will
be inevitable, and such agreement is quite possible during the US
president’s visit to Russia in June. Karabakh is not the problem
to become the stumbling block for these two super-powers and Serzh
Sargsyan will have to seriously think of this",- Ter-Petrosyan
concluded.

People’s Party Will Gather In The Streets If The Election Is Rigged

PEOPLE’S PARTY WILL GATHER IN THE STREETS IF THE ELECTION IS RIGGED

LRAGIR.AM
12:51:35 – 27/05/2009

"If this election is rigged, it will be the end, it is impossible to
go on like this. In case it is rigged, we will gather in the streets",
stated the Head of the People’s Party (ZhK), the first number on the
ZhK ticket for Mayor, Tigran Karapetyan.

He noted that the government takes up measures against him, for
example, as he stated, they go to people’s houses and tell them that
of course, Karapetyan is a good man, but he will not pass and he is
sure that people do not like the government.

The ZhK head is sure that people, who are going to vote neither
for the government nor for the opposition, will vote for his party,
because there is no other candidate for whom they may vote. According
to Karapetyan, there are 3 political fields: the government, which
will put in action all its recourses and will get about 25 percent,
the other is the Armenian National Congress, and the third is the
People’s Party with 10 percent.

Tigran Karapetyan stated that they are going to cooperate with the
HAK in keeping the votes and this time they are not going to let
their votes disappear. He added that they intend to go to the poling
stations with 10 TV cameras where they votes are rigged.

In answer to the question, what is Tigran Karapetyan’s first step
is he is elected Mayor of Yerevan, the latter answered that he will
consulate with the people to know what to do.

Artsakh NGO’s Issue "Declaration Of Principles"

ARTSAKH NGO’S ISSUE "DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES"

Nagorno Karabakh Important

Representatives and experts of various NGO’s in Artsakh that convened
their second conference in Stepanakert on May 18 issued a "Declaration
of Principles" addressed to international organizations working to
bring peace to the region.

The declaration spells out those principles that the NGO’s regard as
necessary before they will participate in any peace-related programs.

The declaration states that the NGO’s will not participate in any
program that seeks to contradict the self-identity of citizens of
the NKR or intends to place restrictions on it. It also states that
they will cooperate with international organizations and donors on
the basis of transparency which takes into account current realities.

The NGO’s say that the need for such a declaration arose after recent
indications to politicize peaceful civilian dialogue that essentially
distort the actual state of affairs and presuppose official results
of the settlement process.

Also participating in the conference by invitation were Vahram
Atanesyan, President of the NKR National Assembly’s Permanent Committee
on Foreign Affairs, and Zhanna Kirakosyan, Director of the NKR’s
Center for International Cooperation.

Experts Split On ‘Nakba Law’

EXPERTS SPLIT ON ‘NAKBA LAW’

Israel

Approval of motion to prohibit events marking Palestinian Arab
‘catastrophe’ of Israel’s inception raises concerns among legal
experts. Tel Aviv University law expert calls motion ‘foolish’, while
Sha’arei Mishpat law professor says motion legitimate, ‘people forget
where we are living’

Daniel Edelson Published: 05.25.09, 09:10 / Israel News

The motion approved by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation
on Sunday to ban Nakba Day, that refers to the refugee flight of
Palestinian Arabs following Israel’s inception, has caused a storm
among legal experts and intellectuals, who say human rights and
the freedom of expression, that have been the guidelines to Israeli
democracy, will suffer a difficult blow.

"To what level of stupidity can they sink?" wondered Dr. Eyal Gross,
a constitutional law expert at Tel Aviv University, "it’s the kind
of law that tries to make everyone think the same way. I don’t know
of any similar laws in any democratic country."

According to the motion, that was brought before the committee by
Knesset Member Alex Miller (Yisrael Beiteinu), anyone marking Nakba
Day could receive up to three years in jail.

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation approved the motion despite
the objection of a number of ministers and the attorney general’s
representative, and it will be put before the Knesset for a first
reading next week.

Advocate Theodor Schwarzberg, an expert on the High Court of Justice
and human rights says the new law threatens the freedom of expression.

"Anyone who wants to mark Independence Day as a Nakba – is entitled
to. I can understand concerns that marking this day could easily
turn into incitement against Israel, but in such a cause there are
legal restraints.

"The criminal law determines the line between freedom of expression
and incitement against the State. Therefore, there is no need for the
‘Nakba law’. In any case, it will be very difficult for it to pass
the test of the High Court of Justice."

Schwarzberg continued to say that "the general trend in the enlightened
world is to limit freedom of expression as little as possible. Not
only does this bill go against the trends of the democratic world –
but it is also very problematic from a constitutional point of view".

Dr. Gross says laws like the ‘Nakba law’ are a thing of the past: "Even
in the patriotic United States there is a well known Supreme Court
ruling that says the law prohibiting flag burning is unconstitutional."

According to Gross, despite the fact that the totalitarianism of the
Soviet Union has fallen, it seems that someone in the Knesset longs
for the days in which there was only one truth, that was dictated by
the government.

‘Forbid Jews to complain about anti-Semitism’ "You can travel to
communist China, where freedom of expression is not particularly
strong, and you can join the Turks, who are always agitated when
the Armenians say they have been wronged. Why not pass a law that
forbids Jews to complain about anti-Semitism because it may offend
someone?" he wondered.

President of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, author Sami
Michael expressed a similar opinion. "In the last year, we have been
witnessing a disturbing deterioration in the protection of the freedom
of expression and the upholding of democratic values," he said.

"Marking Nakba Day is no threat on the State of Israel’s security,
but the legitimate basic right of every person, group or people to
express their pain following a catastrophe. This is not just about
the rights of the Arab minority but about safely crossing all lines
towards the brutal oppression of everyone’s freedom of expression."

Meanwhile, there are those intellectuals that believe the legislation
of a ‘Nakba law" is legitimate. Professor Eliav Shuchtman of the
Sha’arei Mishpat law school, says, "The State has the right to
educate the public and mold the citizens’ character, even through
tools of legislation."

Shuchtman told Ynet, "I don’t see anything wrong with a State that
proclaims it is Jewish not giving legitimization to the denial of
it being so. Imagine US Jews declaring a day of morning on July 4 –
that would be unacceptable.

"How can citizens view the birthday of the country they live in as
illegitimate? People forget where we are living. There is a struggle
for our land here. In terms of international law, it is the Jewish
people’s right to establish a Jewish State here in the Land of Israel.

"Claims being made these days that it is a state of all its
citizens is against international law and what was written in the
British Mandate. The moment the Arab public in the country says the
establishment of a Jewish State is a catastrophe, it contradicts not
only the Zionist outlook, but also the principles of international
law. Just as I don’t have the right to defame people in the street,
they do not have the right to defame the State."

ANKARA: Christian monastery in Turkey wins back land

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
May 25 2009

Christian monastery in Turkey wins back land

One of the world’s oldest functioning Christian monasteries has won a
legal battle to have land it had owned for centuries restored to it,
after a Turkish court ruled on Friday it could not be claimed by the
state.

The dispute over the boundaries of Mor Gabriel, a fifth-century Syriac
Orthodox monastery in eastern Turkey, had raised concerns over freedom
of religion and human rights for non-Muslim minorities in Turkey, a
predominantly Muslim country and European Union aspirant. In a
statement, the Syriac Universal Alliance (SUA), a leading Syriac group
based in Sweden, said a Turkish court in Midyat had reversed an
initial decision by the land registry court to grant villages some 110
hectares (272 acres) of monastery land. But it added another three
cases relating to the monastery’s former land remained open, two of
which had been postponed.

The row began when Turkish government land officials redrew the
boundaries around Mor Gabriel and the surrounding villages in 2008 to
update a national land registry. The Syriac Orthodox monks said the
new boundaries turned over to the villages large plots of monastery
land and some designated as public forest.

The case became a rallying cry for Christian church groups across
Europe, and had been postponed several times. Syriacs are one of the
oldest communities in Turkey and still speak Aramaic, the language of
Jesus Christ. But they are not officially designated a minority in
Turkey like the Greeks or Armenians, so have no special protection
under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne’s provisions for non-Muslim
minorities. The ruling AK Party government has said it has expanded
the rights of minorities. But the EU and U.S. President Barack Obama,
during a trip to Turkey in April, have urged Ankara to do more to
promote religious freedom.
